BNHA X DP Crossover HCs
After the long wait and finals, here are my ideas for all the quirks/occupations and other concepts I devised for the DP characters in the BNHA universe. This was just for fun and for inspiration towards others interested in this crossover au in general.
Tagging the people that were looking forward to this post based on the replies: @qoinq-qhost, @floralflowerpower, @tgfangirl4eva @goodfish-bowl, @whitehairglowinggreeneyedcrush and more.
Anyways, happy reading, folks!
Mr. Lancer
Hero name: Mr. Scholastic
Quirk: Bookworm
Involves his iconic usage of literature titles & quotes for swears to become abilities corresponding to the novel’s contents/themes. Course, he is limited to only books he has read and can quote accurately. Additionally, his voice gets very raspy past two or three quotes as well.
Occupation: Homeroom Teacher for Class 1- A; He’s very dedicated to his new students and teaching the fundamentals of being a pro hero and more! Course, I don’t think his chamomile tea with a wedge of lemon is enough to help him relax from his students (*cough* Danny, Tucker and Poindexter) from their antics at times.
Danny
Hero name: Phantom
Quirk: Ghost core (Ok, @coffeecakecafe had the best name for this one gotta give credit here)
Able to do anything a ghost is perceived to do. Go through walls, disappear and fly. This is a one of a kind quirk as it was obtained from Danny’s old quirk being altered by a machine his parents made that would repurpose/alter an individual’s quirk based on their past family members' own metahuman genetics.
Danny is doing his best and trying to understand his new quirk without causing too much attention to himself while doing so but it seems like its been doing the opposite as of late. Thankfully, he won’t be doing it alone with all his classmates around to help him!
Sam
Hero Name: Black Dahlia
Quirk: Overgrown
Able to create any plant that she knows the biological makeup and content of in almost any environment. However, it is important for her to drink lots of nutrient rich water and take in enough sun if she plans to create larger versions of these plants.
Tucker
Hero name: Tech Master
Quirk: Tech Core
Located on his chest/heart area is a special energy core capable of powering electronics at a rate faster than anything made-man could ever hope to achieve. As a kid, Tucker would tinker away in his family’s garage on a suit that would harness his power to the fullest extent and lead a new era of support tech in the hero world.
Valerie
Hero name: Red Huntress
Quirk: Electromagnetism (Someone I’ve been trying to find their post on my blog had posted this idea and I fell in love with it ever since)
She’s like Static Shock but with a dash of magenta/ruby lasers she can create through focusing her electromagnetism through her finger tips. She is an expert with her quirk and has the best handle of her quirk than most of her peers. She is the most frequent visitor in the support equipment workshop next to Tucker, Poindexter and Danny. It’s how she built the hoverboard she has in the show that utilizes her electromagnetic abilities for both offensive and defensive maneuvers. (Also, I enjoy the idea that Bullet is Val’s uncle on her mom’s side and is her biggest supporter alongside her dad, Damien Gray).
Jazz
Quirk: Serenity
Helps calm individuals and give them a sense of safety/security when they’re around her in a 10 feet radius. Though, anyone out of range cannot be affected by her quirk and she needs to be conscious in order to use it.
She planned on becoming a pro hero but felt her powers were best suited for her dream profession as a psychologist. She has used her quirk a lot when Danny was overwhelmed with his studies prior to UA. Course, a phone call and sibling chat over the phone certainly does the job for Danny now when it comes to preparing material for exams. (Course, its up to you guys to decide)
Dash
Hero name: Rager
Quirk: Strength Magnification
Improves his physique and stamina by a large percentage for a set amount of time. Needs to be careful of how much/long he magnifies his body or else his body will become immensely sore.
Kwan
Hero name: Rallier
Quirk: Team Rally (50/50)
Able to duplicate himself 3-4 times while being able to power-up allies’ quirks or stamina with a rally chant to help the team. The more duplicates there are the rally effect multiplies/stacks on the individual but it can lead to dangerous outcomes for their quirk output.
Kwan is the class representative for 1-A, he’s the best at the job and was more than thrilled to be the one leading his class in more ways than one.
Paulina
Hero name: Enchantress
Quirk: Charm
If the opponent is flustered by her taunts or flirting, their vision will become altered and start seeing things that are not there. It works better on men than women and the opponent can snap out of it with enough willpower or if they’re not interested in her.
Star
Hero name: Ms. Meteorite
Quirk: Comet
Similar to Gran Torino’s Jet quirk except faster and she can create an explosive impact on where she lands. Similar to a meteorite landing on earth, she also learns to use this as a long distance move by punching fast enough as she descends to create wind pressure punches.
Poindexter
Hero name: Tex (like in Tex Avery; Danny gave him the idea!)
Quirk: Slapstick
His appearance is black and white just like an old timey cartoon character as well as having the durability and cartoon powers of one. However, his quirk can only work as long as what he does with it is funny in the circumstance it’s used for. Sort of like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” rules in a sense.
Sidney is part of Class 1-A just saying, I don’t care, this is Poindexter’s time to shine here to be the coolest/funniest person in the class. Also, Tucker’s most loyal friend/tester for new support items.
Wes Weston
Hero name: Vigilance
Quirk: Deduction
He is able to deduct people’s identities to flaws/weak points for him to use against them and  exploit against problems.
Class 1-B Representative and the most annoying/terrifying person that Danny has dealt with in his life. He was able to figure out that Danny’s quirk is not his own or more so that it's not natural and takes every opportunity to state this regardless if anyone is listening or not.
Amber Mclain
Hero Name: Ember
Quirk: Fiery voice (50/50)
Her quirk uses the vibrations in her sining voice to conduct intense heat waves onto opponents or utilize to rumble the structures around here and even put out the flames from her quirk. Its like a combination of Present Mic and Endevours quirk but it leaves her with a strained or inflamed vocal cords with overuse.
Third year student or an upcoming rock star that has certainly gain huge popularity after her song “Remember” was a nationwide hit amongst the younger generation. She’s striving to be the top hero while making her next hit to become the 1# song on the listings.
Dani
Hero name: Phantwo (lol jk; unsure what her name would be)
Quirk: Poltergeist
Similar to Danny’s quirk “Ghost”, except she has the additional ability to melt herself to a slimy puddle and use her ectoplasmic slime to trap or surprise opponents.
Clockwork
Hero Name: Clockwork
Quirk: Time Keeper
Clockwork’s quirk allows him to stop time for 5 to 15 minutes and be able to rewind it in the same amount of time. It can be one to multiple objects as long as he touches them in order to interact with them.
Principle of UA in this au. He’s quite a reserved man but still manages to visit and congregate with students throughout the school during lunch period.
Flynn Fenton/Flynn Walker
Hero Name: The Green Knight
Quirk: Mineralization
His quirk allows him to manipulate the minerals and inorganic materials in the atmosphere to create into crystalized constructs that are almost stronger than diamond. Luckily, the crystals have no value so he doesn’t have to worry about that aspect of his quirk. He does have to worry about his skin becoming dried out as a result of his quirk usage.
Flynn is a third year student that loves to check up on his cousin, Danny, any chance he gets bc of the amount of work he does with his internships.
James Walker (or James W. Hausermann)
Hero name: Warden Wraith
Quirk: Plasma Apparatus
His quirk ionizes the electrolytes in the blood system into plasma. His entire body is composed of plasma giving him his skeletal appearance. He can create plasma chains, teleport from point A to B and more as long as he focuses and has enough energy at use. Course, he can have minor to severe dehydration and imbalance in his electrolyte levels from overuse.
Occupation: CEO of an infrastructure security company/Provisional License Examiner just like Gang Orca. The ghost prison guards become his backup/helpers for the exam phases. (They’re just trained stuntmen with combat or military experience for the occasion).
Also, I like to think Walker has kids in this au who are in the Class 1-A group; they’re not hard to spot they take after their father with their skeletal complexion.
Skulker
Villain name: Quirk Hunter
Quirk: Tracker
The moment Skulker makes eye contact with his target he will be able to hunt them down and find them anywhere no matter how good they are at covering their tracks. He can lock on to only one target, but he will be able to know their heart beat, quirk, be able to place a tracking/scent line that only he can see and will lead him to his target’s location. It lasts for over a day or a half.
Occupation: Skulker is known for capturing, info-detailing or “retiring” newcomer pros or specific quirk users for his clients that pay him handsomely for their targets, dead or alive. Thanks to Vlad, Danny was strictly intended to be captured alive by Skulker but sometimes he gets too thrilled by the hunt to not have a memento. Trust me, it's more of a dangerous
Nicolai Technus
Villain Name: Technus
Quirk: Technopathy
A genius in his own right, even if he’s a little crazy, with the best ability possible for a man of science and innovation. As long as he knows the makeup and attributes of the machine, Technus is able to completely repurpose or change a machine’s qualities for offensive and defensive qualities. Whenever that be for a mech suit or hacking a high tech system for entry, he’s able to do it as long as he knows what it is and how it functions. An example is repurposing a slot machine into a submachine gun that shoots coins at the target.
Vlad Masters
Name: Vlad Plasmius
Quirk: Vampire
Can do anything a vampire can supposedly do. However, he was able to manifest an additional aspect of this quirk which is the ability to copy any quirk users ability. Based on the type of blood he ingests decides the amount of time he can use the copied quirk for.
Occupation: CEO of his own hero firm, he is extremely selective with the interns he has that there is a major waitlist to be even consider for Masters Inc. Course, imagine the surprise Danny must of felt when he received an offer from Vlad right off the bat after the Sports festival.
Bruce Guiles (Bullet)
Hero Name: Bullet
Quirk: Sphyraena or Chimera Fish
Able to do anything a barracuda can do or the quirk is a 50/50 mutant quirk in which he has both the traits of a barracuda, Chimaeras and a touch of piranha from his parents being of one of these fish species hence Chimera. Bullet can do anything those fish can do overall but he can’t go too long without hydration from water. Water quality and its oxygen content also affect his abilities by a noticeable percentage but he still remains quite formidable as a quirk user.
Occupation: Captain of a coast guard team, he’s a strict military man with an amazing record of saving people from any disasters both on land and sea. Him and Walker are best buddies ever since they went to school together.
Vortex
Hero Name: Vortex
Quirk: Storm Warning
Vortex can utilize any variation of a natural disaster depending on the environment he’s in. Hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, you name it he can create it for his use. However, despite his amazing control over his quirk it is still possible for him to create these disasters if he lost control or magnify another pre-existing one if he loses focus.
Occupation: Storm-chaser/Forecaster; His control and knowledge in combating/predicting these natural disasters has led to him to be part of a storm chasing crew and they’re the best in helping disaster prevention teams evacuate citizens as a result.
Petra Eris
Hero name: Pandora
Quirk: Butterfly Effect
Can manipulate or prevent a chaotic event to happen if she was in proximity and present to prevent it to happen. Or even give a little chaos to the opponent to deal with during battle.
One of the top ten heroes and most beloved heroes in the country. She is the best strategist in any team and has a way to predict any event before they happen given the necessity of it for her quirk to work in her favor.
Johnny
Vigilante name: Johnny 13
Quirk: Unlucky
Johnny manifests his bad luck into a shadow that will latch onto opponents and cause unfortunate events to occur more for that individual as a result. However, the shadow cannot exist in complete sunlight; it can only remain if there are already shadows in his general area or it’s nighttime and its effects are strongest at that time obviously.
Occupation: Johnny is the leader of a biker gang or de-facto leader of said biker gang who loves to raise hell and helping folks that need saving whenever he’s around or is up to the task. Kitty tags along with him to help him out of jams and bc she loves him. :3
Kitty
Vigilante name: Kitty
Quirk: Lovesick
Kitty sends a smooch towards her opponent which if it makes contact causes the individual to have nausea or become disoriented for around 10 minutes. It can also have a chance of lasting longer if the individual was sort of infatuated with her regardless of gender.
Pariah Dark
Villain name: King Pariah
Quirk: Ultimate Adaptation
Similar to all for one except with the unpredictability for both the user and opponents. Pariah can manifest any type of quirk needed to defeat anyone that stands in his way both one-on-one and in groups. Course, drawbacks are the learning curve to some of the quirks and that multiple adaptions he utilizes at once will destroy his cells in the process.
Pariah is a former follower of all for one who had unique quirk that All for one augmented to help him succeed if both Shigaraki and Tomura failed in their own conquest for the world. But now Pariah has his own plans to succeed where they failed and become the leader who shapes a new world order with an iron fist.
Frederick Kingsmen
Villain/vigilante name: Fright Knight
Quirk: Burning Energy Infusion
Able to form/infuse objects with his own burning energy life force that is capable of burning or slicing through any in his sight. The sweat he gives off is what provides the material needed to ignite his unnatural flames despite it causing his body to overheat still.
Fright Knight is Pariah’s second-in-command with a loyalty to him as strong as his control over his power. Fright Knight has faced many pro-heros as he carried out the smaller phases of Pariah’s plans and most of them barely came close towards defeating or leaving as much as  scratch on the knight.
Rodolfo Gonzalo
Hero name: Wulf
Quirk: Werewolf + Portal creation (50/50?)
Can do anything a werewolf can supposedly do; somehow it allows him to create portals with his claws to locations he has marked with them or visited in the past.
Wulf was abducted on by Pariah’s forces and sent into the Nomu labs for experimentation to force on another quirk and instill complete allegiance to their cause. Course, Wulf broke free as a result of that new additional quirk allowing him to escape their clutches and his previous one helping him survive the endeavor. However, he lost his memories in the process and could only remember his native language, Spanish, and his hero name Wulf.
Overgrown
Villain/vigilante Name: Overgrown
Quirk: Plant Manipulation
Can manipulate any pre-existing plant matter or create new vegetation if water and soil is present for the process or he understand the biological makeup of the plant in question.
Occupation: Pro-hero or eco-terrorist who is tired of humanity from abusing the environment from quirk battles to industries using the land for their own benefits and none others.
That’s all I have for now! I hope this was worth the wait, guys. As well as, inspire ideas for your takes with a DP x BNHA Crossover!

Shackled News and a bit more
Howdy, folks.
EDIT: I just posted the last chapter of Shackled!!!!!!!!!. I wanted to thank everyone for their lovely comments and reblogs. Everyone has been so very encouraging and excited, and it’s been fantastic, I gotta say.
Now that Shackled is finished, I will begin posting another multi- chapter Supernatural story. Please, if you’d like, take a minute to look over the preview below. If you’d like to be added to my Long Haul (everything) tag list or you’d like to be placed on the Walk Me Home list, let me know, and I will adjust accordingly. Again, thank you so much for sticking with the story, jumping in on the story, just hanging out with me and the story. Y’all are the best.
Walk Me Home
Summary: Twenty-four years ago, Kimberly Harper met a boy who changed the course of her entire life before up and leaving one night. She spent years moving past the memories, building a stable, satisfying career as professor of folklore and mythology at the local university. Then the accidents start, and she’s forced to seek help among her hunter contacts. All it takes is a knock on her office door to send Kimber’s carefully built emotional walls crumbling to the ground.
Featuring: Teen Winchesters, high school romance, reunions, misunderstandings, high intensity emotional turmoil, Dean’s love of pie, Dean being adorable, Sam being adorable and maybe a bit nosy eventually, much group adorkable-ness, show-style investigation, mention of our favorite werewolf, gratuitous and obvious love of fall, DID I MENTION ROMANCE, fluff, smut, tension. I had fun writing it, so I hope you’ll have fun reading it. Trying to keep preview shorter, so I promise huge shoutouts to EVERYONE who helped me SO MUCH with this story.
Inspired by P!nk’s song “Walk Me Home”
Story Warnings (None of these apply to preview): Show level violence, show level parental neglect (let’s not John bash, I’m just saying), show-style witchcraft, show-level mental manipulation, stalking, bit of angst, sexual content (higher than show level),swearing, general yearning
Tumblr media
Chapter 1 Preview
A firm tap on the door of her office makes Kimberly’s head snap up. She blinks, her eyes unable to focus quickly after looking up from her computer screen. She remembers she’s wearing her reading glasses, and slips them off her nose, letting them dangle from the chain around her neck.
“Dr. Harper? Could I take a few minutes of your time?”
“Yes, I…” Her eyes finally focus on her visitor, and the room is suddenly devoid of oxygen. “Dean? Is it...really?”
“Kimber?”
The astonished man framed in the doorway is a far cry from the brash, charming boy she met in a different life, but she’d know him anywhere. Time has been more than kind to Dean Winchester, and Kimberly has to admit some things really do get better with age.
Which is saying a lot, considering.
“God, no one’s called me that since high school.” She stands and takes a couple of measured steps around her desk. Seeing him unexpectedly like this after so much time leaves her physically and emotionally off-balance, but the smile she offers him is genuine. “You’re a helluva sight for sore eyes. It’s been a while.”
Dean recovers from his shock quickly, crossing the small room in a few quick strides, and sweeps her into a hug. She’s engulfed in his presence, not just his physical stature (she does not remember him being this tall or broad or...solid) but also the scent and feel that is absolutely Dean. She feels a shock of vertigo as memories and emotions she’d long laid to rest all vie for immediate attention.
It hits them simultaneously that they’ve embraced for a few moments longer than necessary, and they disentangle with sheepish smiles.
“What are...no, I’m sorry, I’m being rude. Have a seat!” A lop-sided smile pulls at Dean’s lips, and suddenly she’s seventeen again, trying desperately to keep her cool as she finally gets to talk to the handsome, mysterious new kid. Warmth floods every cell of her body, and she comes dangerously close to giggling.
“Coffee?” she offers, forgetting most of her hard-earned vocabulary in the face of her teenage dream.
“Always.”
...
The last time she’d seen Dean Winchester, his father was burning holes in his elder son’s back from the driver’s seat of his precious Impala. He glowered at Dean and Kimber, impatiently drumming his fingers on the steering wheel as the teenagers stumbled through their good-byes. Dean’s younger brother sat, slump-shouldered and defeated in the back seat, resigned to yet another relocation.
“Don’t forget my number,” Kimberly murmured, her palms sliding over his jaw, fingers threading into his close-cropped hair, and they both knew she meant, “Don’t forget me.”
“I couldn’t if I tried, sweetheart,” he whispered, his voice breaking on the last word. He cleared his throat, trying to turn away before she could see any weakness.
“Don’t,” she said, holding his face firmly. “If this is all I get of you, don’t even take that much from me.”
Five blissful weeks they’d had before Dean’s father concluded his mysterious business in the area. Five weeks since she’d begun tutoring Dean in AP American History; an absolute sham, she had realized exactly five minutes into their first session. Dean may not have been caught up on the exact dates and details of what they were covering in class, but once he set eyes on the material, even she had a hard time keeping pace with his reasoning.
“Just wanted to talk to you alone,” he’d admitted that afternoon, his olive eyes sparkling. He flashed her what had to be an award-winning half-grin, showing a glimpse of perfect, dazzling white teeth and the merest touch of uncertain vulnerability.
“Does that usually work on girls?” she asked, genuinely curious. He had to practice that expression in the mirror; it was too perfect to be natural. His face lit up as his smile spread, his cheeks gaining the faintest hint of pink. In that one moment, Kimber realized she’d lived her entire life under an overcast sky, and now the clouds had parted. His smile was the sun on her face for the first time, dazzling and vital, and she soaked it in with dizzy abandon.
“Why, is it working on you?”
“Yeah, it, um, it really is.”
They spent the next month or so getting to know each other as only kids can, when everything is new, the absolute pinnacle of priority and passion. They studied each other as fervently as they should have studied for midterms. Explaining how the Age of Enlightenment influenced the American Revolution was a complete waste of time next to finding out that the beautiful, smooth-talking, tough-as-nails Dean Winchester was actually ticklish.
Dean told her the most amazing stories, which she only learned were true after he and his family disappeared. She caught him up in history enough for the teacher to get off his back, and in return he showed her how to get rid of unwanted physical attention with minimal risk on her part.
Dean wasn’t her first kiss, but he wiped the memory of every other fumbling embrace from her mind with a searing permanence. Some nights they snuck out to the tree house in her backyard, and some nights she snuck him into her room. He would never take her out to any of the famous local make-out spots, though; he said they were too dangerous and just begging for trouble.
She knew better than to argue with him when he got “that look” on his face, spoke to her in “that tone.” It took many years and some hard experiences of her own, but she did eventually learn that he’d been protecting her from so much more than she ever could have understood at that point in her life.
She found herself in awe of the sheer amount of wisdom contained in such a carefree, often goofy package. That they were chronologically the same age, almost to the month, was irrelevant; Dean Winchester had lived far beyond his years, and it showed.
And then one night, he’d arrived on her doorstep in the middle of dinner, asked if she could come outside for a minute. When he told her he was leaving, she knew he wasn’t joking. He’d warned her it would happen this way, that he had no idea how long they’d be in town, but she’d always imagined that future as some vague, misty destination, like “graduation” or “college.” Definitely going to happen, but not anytime soon, so might as well relax and enjoy things while you could.
“I…” But she couldn’t say it, not yet. She wanted to, had read so many novels and seen all the movies. It was the thing to say, and half her friends had already proclaimed their hearts belonging to various celebrities and hot guys around school. But staring into Dean’s eyes, so much older than they should be, she knew better than to throw that word out so lightly, carelessly.
“Yeah,” he sighed. His eyelids dropped, shoulders heaved once, and when he met her gaze again, that smooth front of cool confidence had slid back in place. “I know, sweetheart. Me, too.”
He kissed her then, despite his father’s glowering, despite her parents’ astonished looks from between the living room curtains. His hands were tight on her waist, and she raised up on her toes, pulling his face just a little closer.
They pulled apart after a long moment, eyes locked, and she kissed him one last time, chastely, savoring the plush of his velvet-soft lips against hers.
Then she let him go, and he went. There was nothing else they could do.
She hugged herself against the chill autumn night, ignoring the first dashes of icy rain that stung her bare arms as she watched the black Impala turn a corner and disappear.
She didn’t see him again for nearly two and a half decades. When he knocked on her office door, asking for Dr. Harper, the years melted away. She felt the sting of the rain, the chill of the night he’d left, and for a long moment, all she could do was stare.

Tagged by @little-murmaider thank you!!!
1. Height: 5′3 ish? tbh I have not been measured in years and the last time I was in high school I was at 5′2, so now I just kinda...well I lie, and presume I gained that extra bit even though I really might not have lol.
2. Last thing I googled: ‘clothing brands worn by the band Queen’ because-well, actually, does it shock anyone that I’ve googled this? I live for so much of the shit they wore in the 70s and 80s and just really wish I could find reproductions of some of it (also that Hot Dad look in the 90s they all had going? that’s just basically my work uniform in terms of the button ups and weird ties and bow ties I own, so I’ve already got that bit down, even if I don’t look as good as they do rocking it.)
3. Favorite musicians: ...so many, and also do bands count? Like if you admire each member of the band as a respective musician and in what they contribute to their group as well as any individual work? Because if that counts then a short list (made off of the much longer full list, and I swear I really did try and pare this down but it was difficult!) would be: Queen, Avatar, Brendon Small, Gene Hoglan, Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator, Hozier, My Chemical Romance, Banks, Brian Eno, Elton John, Cab Calloway, Cocorosie, David Bowie, The Decemberists, Fever Ray, WEEP, Ghost, Janelle Monae, Jozef Van Wissem, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, Miike Snow, Mother Mother, Tom Waits, and Sufjan Stevens (and I’m forcing myself to end this list here lol.)
4. Song stuck in my head: I’ve got a few, but the top three competing to play all at once in my head currently are: Sweatpants by Childish Gambino, Earfquake by Tyler the Creator, and Son and Daughter by Queen.
5. Followers: 225, and I’m grateful for each one! I never anticipated having that many people following me on here tbh, when I started this blog...jesus, back at the end of high school/beginning of college? Time is a cold motherfucker lol.
6. Following: 276. I was following over 600 a few days ago, but I finally went thru and cleaned it out. A lot of people hadn’t posted in months, or years, so I just kinda figure they aren’t coming back now, tbh. My dash isn’t as busy as I’d like it to be, but I also actually see everyone’s posts whereas before they didn’t always show up, so it’s a decent exchange.
7. Do you get asks: Sometimes! Especially recently, folks have been wonderful about sending in requests and asks for the various ask box things I reblog. I sometimes worry that I reblog too many of those, but I honestly do really like getting to talk to folks on here and interact, and getting asks or mentioned on posts really does make my day!!
8. Amount of sleep: if my insomnia isn’t being terrible, then between 4-6 hours most nights. If it is being an asshole, then more like 3-4 max. I’ve gotten a full 8 hours once before though, and boy was that fuckin weird.
9. Lucky number: Don’t know if they’re lucky, but the numbers 2 and 6 seem to turn up a lot in my life, which I consider a cool little thing. Probably the closest I have to lucky numbers.
10. What are you wearing: A very old pair of sweatpants and an Avatar shirt, because my after-work uniform is basically all lounge clothes/pjs mixed with band t-shirts.
11. Dream Job: Published author/screenwriter and/or museum docent. I mean, don’t get me wrong I love just writing as I do now, but it would be cool to get my work out there more and also be able to make a bit of a living off of it, even if I did still need to have another day job. I think I’d be a lot happier, if I could make that happen at least.
12. Instruments: I learned and played clarinet from elementary school into my first year of high school. I play guitar badly. Can fuck around on a piano but suck at reading music so anything I play on it is usually just whatever’s in my head at the time. Own a mandolin, play it poorly. Does the recorder count if you’ve not played it since like sixth grade?
13. Languages: English is my first language. Took almost four years of Spanish, but don’t speak it well, though I can understand a bit of it when I need to at work. Took a year of German, but really only recall the German swear words my German/Russian grandma and great-grandma have taught me over the years. Un petit peu of French but very basic levels-like I can order a sandwich, but please don’t ask me to say much else lol. Jag prata svenska, men det är inte gud. Swedish is probably the one I speak best after English, but I admit my accent is painful to listen to, even to me. Someday it will sound not totally horrible, maybe.
14. Favorite song: Just one? Oh dear. Well, there’s really a rota for this so I’ll give you the most recent favorite: Action This Day by Queen
15. Random fact: I occasionally study contortion because I fell in love with what the contortionists at Cirque Du Soleil can do, and I’ve always been flexible enough to move my limbs to places they probably don’t belong, despite not really being very physically fit otherwise. I’ll never be flexible enough or good enough to actually use it anywhere, but it spices up my exercise routine when I need a break from dance, yoga, and weights. Also, it’s weirdly fun seeing if you can get your foot to rest on your face (I can! And it definitely should not be that exciting but I’m nearly 25 and struggling in various other areas of my life, so the little things really count.)
16. Aesthetic: I’ll always be a little bit goth, I think. Could go and do Goth 2 Boss, and it would still be there, y’know? I’m trying to think of some of the ways friends and coworkers have described me/my look/general vibe, a few are:
-A librarian that works part time as a roadie but doesn’t have two separate wardrobes for each job
-Like I’m constantly trying to look as queer as possible, so that I’m not mistaken for a heterosexual (though this one is honestly true, my dream is to find one of those vintage ‘how dare you presume I’m heterosexual’ buttons from the 80s and just add that onto my current set of looks)
-A dramatic demon that also cares about having sensible footwear (I like swooshy clothes and I like not fucking up my ankles more than I already have, I can’t help it that I can’t give up either of these things for Fashion)
-Like a Cool Uncle/Justin McElroy (true, and you’ll tear my horribly patterned shirts and various Hot Dad button ups from my cold undead hands.)
-Like a vampire who didn’t really understand the Vampire Fashion Memo but tries really hard (a friend tossed me this one, and I still can’t tell if she meant it as a compliment or a plain old insult, but either way I admit she’s kind of right lol)
-Like you’re trying to steal Richard Ayoade’s wardrobe (this one came from my mum, and she’s right, I am. He dresses wonderfully.)
So...all of that in one, I guess?

“Pawel said he’d meet us here, that Conor’ll be happy with scones and his tablet while we talk.” Kit holds the door for Teas Please open while Carolyn walks through, then follows her in. He raises one hand; Carolyn follows the motion, catching the moment that one of the serving girls spots them and changes direction.
“Hi, Carolyn, Kit,” she sings out cheerily. She puts her fingers behind her name tag, shows it proudly. “New year, new job, and all kinds of new resolutions. How are you doing?”
“Hi, Serina,” Kit greets her. “I didn’t know you worked here.”
Carolyn frowns slightly. There was a conversation during rush that she vaguely remembers now, between Drea, Serina, Sera, and Trish about crushes. It was before Drea got together with Corbin. Serina had covered for Drea’s discomfort in talking about her crush by blurting out her own, on one of the waiters at Teas Please. Carolyn hopes it’s not the waiter she knows best; if it is, she’s pretty sure Serina’s barking up the wrong tree.
“I applied in December, just before the semester ended. Nate told me that Jaclyn—she was a grad student—was graduating and there’d be a spot open. Luckily I snapped it up.” Serina grabs two menus, twists to scan the dining room. “Did you want a table or a booth? I don’t have any small tables right now, but one should be opening up in a few minutes and I can get it cleaned up for you.”
“We’re actually meeting someone,” Kit says. He stands with his hands shoved into his pockets, rocking back slightly on his heels. He tosses his head, bangs sliding momentarily out of his eyes before they fall back again. “Pawel should be here.”
“Oh, you’re who Professor Szczek is waiting for! That reminds me.” Serina darts behind the hostess podium and comes up with a small tin of crayons. “Someone promised me he can fix these, as long as his father says it’s okay. You’re going to be in the back, in Nate’s section, but he’s on break right now so I hope you’re okay with waiting a little bit for him.”
“We’re not going to be in your section?” Kit asks, leaning forward.
Serina laughs softly, gaze dropping. “Not this time, nope, so you’ll have to come back another time to bother me.”
Kit rubs at the back of his neck, watches her. “I can do that.”
That’s… new. Definitely different. Carolyn’s gaze narrows as Serina leads them through the small restaurant. Serina holds the menus and crayons to her chest, fingers curled around the edges. She glances over at Kit while she walks, a small smile lighting her lips as they linger over conversation.
Carolyn spots Pawel and Conor and steps around them, reaching the booth before Kit and Serina. She slides into the bench on one side, opposite Conor, and waits for Pawel to look up from his phone.
Conor watches her quietly, his fingers steady and still on his tablet. “Dad’s distracted,” he says.
“Just collecting some data. Theories.” Pawel locks his phone and shoves it in his pocket. “And research time is over, advising is beginning. Kit!” he calls out, waving and pointing at the empty spot next to Carolyn. “I had Nate bring out water, but he refused to even consider bringing tea until you got here.”
“I have my cocoa,” Conor says, nudging the mug forward. “I don’t like tea. Why couldn’t I go hang out with Alan today?”
“Because Alan’s busy. Emily said they won’t be home until dinnertime, and they’re already coming over then.” Pawel touches the top of the tablet. “You know the deal. You get hot cocoa, whatever sandwich you want, and whatever dessert you want. And on top of all that, you get tablet time. In exchange, you sit through this without setting anything on fire, and you clean your room when we get home.”
“My room’s fine,” Conor protests.
“If I let you and Alan go up there to play, I’ll lose you both,” Pawel says.
“Is that bad?” Conor asks. He sits back, setting the tablet on the table when Serina sets down a tin of crayons. “Oh, wow, you were serious? You’re going to let me melt them back together?”
“Only if your dad says it’s okay.” Serina crouches down. “No actual flames allowed, and you have to be careful because there are a lot of other people here and you never know how someone’s going to react if there’s a sudden surge of magic. But if you can fix my crayons, that’d be awesome.”
Conor straightens his back, crosses his arms. “Of course I can fix your crayons.”
Pawel settles a hand atop Conor’s head. “Just be careful. Thank you, Serina. Tell Nate not to worry about hurrying back from break; we’re not in a rush.”
“What are you thinking?” Kit leans over, knocks an elbow into Carolyn.
“Tea,” she deadpans. When he rolls his eyes at her, she finally opens the menu, even though she already knows what she wants. “High tea with a sandwich, salad, and scone. I’m getting the gobbler…?” Her voice trails off, lilting up in an almost question.
“I’ll get the buffalo chicken, and we’ll split.” Kit closes his menu. “I’m getting that vanilla silk oolong again. They’ve got the chocolate raspberry on the menu if you’re interested.”
“Why don’t you just order for each other?” Conor asks, neatly lining up crayon halves on the table. He seems to be choosing two complementary colors instead of matching halves for each new crayon-to-be. “It’s like you’re telepathic anyway, right?” He glances up, blinking at them both. “Dad said you’re twins.”
“We are twins, but we’re predictive, not telepathic,” Carolyn says.
“She’s predictive. I’m not,” Kit adds.
“Not possible.” Conor flexes his fingers, tiny sparks jumping at his fingertips. He lays his hands across the crayons, his brow furrowed, and Carolyn smells hot wax. When he lifts his hands, there are six awkwardly formed two-colored crayons lying on the wooden surface. “You’re twins. Either you’re both predictive, or not.”
“We’re not identical.” Kit leans on the table, into Carolyn’s space. “Just because—“
Pawel gets a hand up before Kit keeps going. “There’s a lot you don’t know yet about magical theory,” Pawel tells his son. “You work on the crayons and your games. We’re going to talk about what Carolyn and Kit are doing for independent study.”
Conor mutters something too low to be heard, and his kicking foot catches Carolyn’s shin under the table. She winces, and he looks up, apologetic.
She smiles slightly. She gets Conor’s frustration, she really does, but she’s not arguing the point with Kit anymore. This is her compromise with her twin, working on an independent study that isn’t entirely independent.
“I’ve approached the Dean of Arts & Sciences and he’s fine with your plan for the two of you to complete the same independent study,” Pawel says, “as long as you choose a separate final project to present to the department.” His gaze shifts from Carolyn to Kit. “Which I don’t think will be a problem. Kit, what do you want to get out of this independent study?”
“I’m from a predictive lineage, but the men of our line don’t tend to be fully predictive,” Kit says firmly. “I’m looking for ways that I can start to invest more in ritual, and I want to learn ways to use what little residual predictive Talent I have so I can influence that ritual.”
“I want to know how ritual can influence and change predictive Talent, whether I’m working with the cards—my natural inclination—or something else,” Carolyn counters.
“End result for both of you is designing a ritual,” Pawel says slowly. “But the impact is different. Carolyn, you want the ritual to improve upon your natural Talent. And Kit, you want your natural Talent to improve upon the ritual. Yes?” His phone is back in his hands, thumbs moving across the screen.
Carolyn glances at her brother, nods when he does. “Yes,” they say in tandem.
“Twins,” Conor mutters to himself, the smell of warm wax rising again as another half dozen crayons become whole. He scoops them up, puts them back in the bin Serina brought over, and surveys the litter of crayon pieces left on the table.
“Hey, folks.” Nate slides into the bench next to Kit, nudging him closer to Carolyn. “Welcome back to Unity. Did Serina give you the special sandwich of the day, and the soups? Also, we’re out of apple crêpes.”
“I want a chocolate hazelnut one.” Conor looks up when Pawel coughs, and he adds quietly, “After I have that grilled cheese with all the weird cheese and pear slices, and I said I’d eat a salad. No dressing, because gross.”
“Today salad dressing is gross,” Pawel grumbles. “Last week he ate an entire tub of ranch.”
“That’s why it’s gross now,” Conor says easily. He reaches for his headphones, tucks them in his ears before saying too loudly, “I’m going to watch videos and recharge before I do more crayons.”
Carolyn places her order, half-mixed with Kit as they talk over each other. Nate just nods along, then repeats the two orders back perfectly.
After Pawel reels off his own choices, Nate pushes himself to standing. “I’ll go get that put in for you, and I’ll be back with the tea shortly, and more cocoa for Conor. It’s good to see you, Professor Szczek; I’ll see you tomorrow morning in class, too.”
“Sucking up to the professor doesn’t get you a better tip,” Pawel says dryly. “Or a guaranteed A.”
“I’m going to be one of your absolutely mundane people in that class, learning about Talent,” Nate says. “I just want to get through and see if I can better understand the people around me.” He claps a hand on Kit’s shoulder. “See you later. Oh, and Serina said she’d be back for the crayons in a bit.”
“You have plans with Nate?”
Kit shakes his head. “No, I just figured I’d come over here and study later. I have a lot of reading to do for that sociology class I took. I’m supposed to have finished three articles and two videos before the first class tomorrow afternoon. Nothing like starting the semester with a bang, right? Isn’t the first day supposed to be syllabus day?”
“You’re upperclassmen, and syllabus day is a myth told to freshmen,” Pawel points out. “And that’s not going to be your only assignment this week, you realize.”
Which Carolyn figures is his way of saying they’d be starting off with an assignment for their independent study as well. Which means they need to find out when that’ll be due. “Kit and I were looking through our schedules, and Kit stalked your class schedule online,” Carolyn admits. She pulls out her phone, opens up her calendar. “It looks like our choices are either first thing on Wednesday to meet with you, or Monday and Thursday afternoons.”
“What are you doing at noon on Wednesday?” Pawel asks, his own phone in his hands. “I want to keep that morning open in case I need a day to go to Conor’s class. I’m not done on Mondays until six—the test slot isn’t on the standard calendar. Thursdays I can do something at three.”
“Eating lunch.” Kit shakes his head, one hand up to negate the idea that Pawel’s suggesting. “I’ve got a one hour break between a morning lab and an afternoon three hour long lecture. I don’t want to miss lunch.”
“Fine, then we’ll meet on Wednesday at noon in my office, with lunch provided,” Pawel counter offers, emphasizing the lunch. “We’ll go over your previous assignments, then we’ll regroup on Thursday at three for new assignments,” Pawel says. He raises his eyebrows, spreads his hands. “I’m going to feed you. Don’t pass this up. Give me a list of any allergies or dislikes, and expect variety. It won’t all be pizza or sandwiches. Do you like your curry mild or spicy?”
“Hot,” Carolyn responds for both of them, ignoring the look that Conor gives her. “But you don’t have to do that.”
“If I’m going to demand a lunch meeting time, I’ll feed you,” Pawel says firmly. “I have a budget to take care of it. My department is proving itself to be severely unorthodox, and I don’t see that getting any better. Besides, I have to eat, too. And you two will be expected to present work every Wednesday.”
“Including this Wednesday?” Carolyn asks, because while she expects an assignment from what he said before, this seems like they’re jumping into the deep end. She’s not even sure what this “class” is going to be.
“Including this Wednesday,” Pawel confirms. “No syllabus day for you. Don’t worry, it’s nothing complex. Since we’re branching out from your heritage Talent, I want to start with that. You’ll both do a simple three part reading before we meet on Wednesday. Write it up, and include all the variables: what was on your mind, what you were doing shortly before you did the reading, who was around you. What deck you used, what the cards responded. Along with looking at ritual, we’ll be looking at the inherent ritual in your personal use of your predictive Talent. We’ll also explore other methods of bringing predictive Talent to the foreground, and looking at ritual enhancement. Second assignment, also due Wednesday: outline your goals for this independent study in a clear and concise list. Be specific, and mention at least three other methods of predictive ritual that you are interested in or at least willing to explore during this semester. Also, define what both predictive and ritual mean to you, and what kinds of ritual might be adaptable to use with predictive Talent.”
Carolyn’s fingers fly, trying to get it all noted in her phone, Kit doing the same next to her. She glances up to see Pawel watching. Waiting. “Isn’t that a lot when we haven’t even had a session?” she asks.
“Independent study isn’t an easy A,” Pawel says softly. “You get my complete attention on your topic of research. But that means you’re both going to work for it. Are you sure this is what you want?”
“Yes.” Kit sets his own phone face down on the table, crosses his arms. “I want to understand my options. I want to see what else I can do.”
Because he thinks he’s broken when it comes to predictive Talent. Carolyn can supply the end to that statement without Kit saying it aloud. She inches closer, presses her knee against his, and relaxes when he presses back.
“Yes,” she echoes, because if it’s good for Kit, it’ll be good for her. That’s the thing about twins; they’ll always be in this together.

I was tagged by @ravenclawpotionsqueen thank you!
What’s your favorite song(s) to sing/hum?
Honestly so many, from folk music to musicals to swing music to classical. But I should point out that while I do sing and hum, I’m very much a whistler. People can often tell when I’m coming in cos they can hear me whistling, and for that, though again I’ll try anything, there are certain jaunty folk tunes that are just better for whistling like ‘The Road to the Isles’, ‘The Bonnie Lass of Fyvie’, and ‘Cock O’ the North’. Generally I hum slower songs like lullabies and laments, and sing musicals and more romantic folk songs if I get the chance but I like to set time aside specifically for practising rather than do so while I’m doing other stuff.
What’s your favorite flower/tree/plant?
I think my favourite flowers are wild roses, because you know it’s summer when they’re out in June, but they’re both scrappy and sweet-smelling and just all round good flowers.
But I also love dahlias, especially orange ones, which I always think of as funky retro flowers, and common primroses are also really gorgeous wee flowers, because again you can see them coming out in late May. But I do like wild flowers a lot because I’m a terrible gardener, and also it’s great to see things like foxgloves and red campion and wood anemone all clustered together. But I’m not trying to be a snob because I really love cultivated roses too, all kinds (especially yellow or rambling ones though) and especially the concept of a rose garden, and then there’s all those weird greenhouse plants that have special characteristics and uses or are like carnivorous or whatever. And I do have a very reliable cyclamen in the house, so they’re kind of cool.
Favourite tree is a beech tree, but I’m also partial to Scots pine and birch and rowan.
And cos I can’t work out which of the above two to put it in, honeysuckle is a cool plant and smells so nice.
Just PLANTS all round are amazing.
Favorite colors? Most shades of green- like overall green is my favourite- but also maroon red, darker shades of blue (royal to navy), and a kind of deep rosy but not too bright pink. But that’s mostly for wearing. Really I like looking all kinds of colours, even if pastels are less attractive than blocky primary colours.
What do you always doodle?
Just like spirals, and also circles and squares that I colour in. Sometimes really bad snails.
How do you take your coffee/tea?
Coffee- black if it’s just ordinary coffee made at home (though I do have a really nice toffee powder right now that’s making my life so much better). If I’m in a cafe I’ll get like a hazelnut latte, or a mocha with an extra shot of coffee (because they always put waaay too much syrup/chocolate in those things).
Tea- only a dash of milk so it’s still strong-ish, but not brewed too long because I want it to still be hydrating. I resent people making a pot because I reserve the right to be picky and bitchy about my tea in my own home.
Favorite candle scent?
I have a wax melter so it’s on pretty much all the time because I hate bad smelling rooms. Depends on the season, I like clean, fresh flowery and laundry smells as soon as it gets to late February right through to October, but winter is so much better because I can go nuts with like gingerbread and home baking and cinnamon and stuff. That being said, I like this particular ‘mulled wine by the fire’ one they do for air wick, not because it actually reminds me that much of mulled wine, but it DOES have enough of a warm indoorsy Christmassy scent to feel comfortable, and also it always reminds me of like chilling with the Treasurer’s Accounts or some other sixteenth century court records for Yuletide, cos that’s what I study to A LOT.
What’s your go-to dance move when you’re alone?
There’s a lot of skipping, occasionally some heel-clicks...
Favorite quote?
Oh I can never pick one but there’s a hundred text posts on this site alone that have been helpful
Favorite self care routine(s)?
I do not skimp on making myself comfortable, but tea is always good.
Fuzzy socks or house slippers?
I mean I’m not into FUZZY socks per se because the material is usually weird but rather that than slippers or *shudder* bare feet.
What color are your eyes?
Brown.
What’s your favorite eye color on others? #
Green and grey are both pretty cool but like I don’t have a favourite, the fact that there are different eye colours at all is awesome.
Favorite season? Why?
Technically, all of them. I do not take sides, exactly, and I can put a positive spin on almost all kinds of weather and there’s something to celebrate with every season. I mean I’m pretty into January, oddly, because who doesn’t love weird dark nights and stormy weather and snow and celidhs,. BUT because winter can feel so long here and because two out of my top three months are in summer, I do yearn for it (but then I also really quite dislike July so that evens it out).
Cheek, neck, or nose kisses?
Idk which I’d prefer, I’m not really picky, but I do know I hate being kissed on the cheek when greeting someone, especially someone I don’t know, so that’s definitely out.
What does your happy place look like?
There’s probably a nice view and no responsibilities, I’m not picky other than that it’s stress-free. That being said I go to a lot of sunny empty castles and country roads in my head.
Favorite breed of dog?
I think mutts are usually a good way to go, but I like red setters (who wouldn’t) and deerhounds, wolfhounds, greyhounds, and whippets (like the only smaller dog breed I’m big into). Border collies are also just generally cool but way too smart for me to keep up with. But I like all dogs and have only ever had crossbreeds or mongrels and I’m not majorly fussed about getting a specific breed of dog, and would never pay through the nose for a purebred one, even though I like the characteristics of certain breeds.
Do you ever want to be married? If so, what colors would you pick for your wedding theme?
Maybe, and I think it can be a wonderful thing, but I think we place too much expectation on it to like change a relationship, and would certainly never spend loads of money on a wedding. As for colours idk, it would depend where and when and on flowers and so on.
Cursive or print?
Cursive. Not because it’s pretty or anything, but because that’s how I write and looking at people’s pretty printed hands makes me feel very ashamed of myself. And it’s fun.
Favorite weather?
Warm sunshine but like I like I said, I like all of it, and if it was sunny all or even most of the time I’d feel very irritated.
I’m tagging some more recent mutuals to get to know folk, @annedey, @daydreamsinthesun, @paleaeograph, @latristereina, @official-scotland, @lunaloveboook

Supergirl, the Bechdel Test, and Critiques of Critiques
Because asks–ranging from fans who have been made to feel guilty for not liking the current season of Supergirl, though many are still watching and hoping, to angry anons who cannot believe I would dare criticize any aspect of a show–keep popping up in my inbox, I’m addressing the issue once here and deleting all those asks clogging up my inbox (because dammit I like order, and my inbox no longer has it). So hold on tight (and ignore/don’t read if you don’t care…really fucking simple rule) while we hit a few of the points I see appearing over and over again on my dash and in my inbox.
First of all, regarding the post about the Bechdel Test (that I’m going to assume was written by someone with the best of intentions and has been misappropriated to yell at other fans and tell them they’re wrong–blanket statement, no wiggle room). Yes, the scene did end up passing the Bechdel test, but that original post to which you refer was written and reblogged by most folks before the episode ever aired, making it an accurate enough assessment with the limited knowledge we had. The fact remains that the way the episode/that scene was marketed and promoted did not pass the test, and that says a lot about the kind of audience they’re hoping to attract (if you don’t believe me, feel free to go read the research about marketing).
Furthermore, please dear god stop talking about how you know the rules better than anyone else because once upon a time your Intro to Women and Gender Studies professor gave them to you or mentioned them in passing. Bechdel herself has written about sometimes wishing she wasn’t associated with that test (not that she often is these days, just her last name…) because it sets such a fucking low bar, gets plucked out of context, and held up as some gold standard for representation without any thought about the woman who created it, the context of its creation, and the motivation behind it. (Also, if you’re not going to read the blog post by Bechdel that I linked to, just know that the test is inspired, in many ways, by Chapter 5 of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own on a chapter that talks about the invisibility of lesbian representation, and Woolf’s work as a whole is all about criticizing the “Angel in the House” and men’s writing for reducing women’s lives to their attachments to men, children, and families, which is literally what that scene is Supergirl does.) And I’m so tired of seeing straight feminists reblogging these posts calling LGBTQ fans of the show anti-feminist for daring to complain about it because this test does not belong only to you, and it is the brainchild of an early-twentieth-century bisexual and a group of self-identified “dykes” from the 1970s and 1980s who wanted to talk about why the state of current media (both the novels of Woolf’s time and the movies of Bechdel and co’s time) failed them as women whose concerns weren’t tied to traditional narratives of what a woman’s life looked like (marriage to a man, followed by children).
The Bechdel test as we know it today comes from a niche comic strip, Dykes to Watch Out For, which documented the lives of queer women (primarily) from the 1980s through the Bush era and the struggles day-to-day life during that time period entailed, and that context gets ignored far more than your precious rules. And yes, the test (though god that word is infuriating because it implies the same sort of inflexibility that is already rampant in fandom and internet culture) is about movies as a whole (so by your own logic, we shouldn’t even go near a TV show with it), but it’s not incorrect to talk about a scene passing or not passing it, nor is it wrong to use the test as a kind of signpost or easily recognizable language with which to discuss the shortcomings of a given scene (if you want to know more, and I mean this quite earnestly, not to be a jackass, go read linguistic, structuralist, and poststructuralist theorists and find out all about signifiers, then come back when you realize that the meaning of words and phrases isn’t confined to the letters on the page, but encompasses all of the cultural signifiers to which they are tied, which is actually what makes so much of communication as we know it possible).
To insist that fans cannot be upset because a scene featured 5 whole women together and that’s “unheard of” in television forces us to settle, forces us to praise a scene that’s setting up the poorly written demise of a couple that many of us showed up for, upped Supergirl’s ratings and viewing numbers for, because we saw a woman whose journey toward self-realization, acceptance, and actualization looked like ours, found in Sanvers a couple whose story wasn’t perfect but felt realistic in a way many same-sex relationships on television still don’t. And yes, I’m calling this breakup poorly written. As I’ve written before, yes, not having the same idea about what your family should look like is a good reason to end a relationship. Not having had that conversation months into a fucking engagement when both participants in the relationship are adults who have been shown learning about how important communication is and recognizing why it’s a bad idea to make assumptions about what partners want and who apparently have incredibly strong opinions on the matter is beyond unrealistic. And for a show to know that they’re going to break up a couple after just a few episodes makes featuring the proposal and demanding praise for “groundbreaking” television irresponsible marketing–it sets fans up to be disappointed and disillusioned. (And now, because they’ve written Maggie’s absence as this kind of a breakup, rather than the myriad other ways they could have done it, if they do want to bring Maggie back, it’ll be far more difficult and will entail a fundamental reevaluation of what either Alex or Maggie wants in life, which we likely wouldn’t get to see depicted at length or in any kind of realistic way.)
I’ve seen so many posts criticizing those who have critiqued the show and insisting that they clearly haven’t watched the show or that they ignore all the good it has done. Does that kind of post exist? Yeah, of course it does. It’s the Internet/fandom/Tumblr; there’s anything you can think of here. But these posts demanding appreciation for the show reek of the attitude that has, for decades, told LGBTQ people to sit down, shut up, and be grateful for what we’re given. Shows don’t have to listen to our critiques (and I’m not here defending folks who get violent or spout vitriol directly to the actors who cannot control their storylines, though let’s remember those folks exist on both sides of the issue), but to try to tamp down the rights of fans to be upset and express that frustration is, to be quite frank, embarrassing to see in 2017 from self-ordained progressives.
I’m still here and watching and producing content that I like to think does right by the show Supergirl could have been (and may well become again), to the kind of nuanced, complex characters and storylines the first season and writers like Ali Adler gave us. But don’t tell me I have to like every second of it. Don’t tell me that I’m not allowed to feel misled by a show that created an endgame narrative for a couple only to break them up in such a way that the reconciliation they continue to lure in front of us as a possibility is nearly impossible (or, at the best, decidedly unrealistic). Don’t tell me that I should accept the flirty subtext between Kara and Lena or a one-off hook up between Alex and Sara that will never hold the same potential for representation as a multi-season lesbian relationship as “equal to” or possible of making up for the loss of Sanvers. And most importantly, don’t ever tell me to shut up when your username includes the words “white” and “conservative” because, oh, honey, nothing gets a liberal academic going quite like the possibility of showing you just how little power you truly have.

Some notes on my fandom stats.
I sometimes get questions or criticism regarding my fandom stats.  (I welcome both.)  Sometimes critics have missed something that I clearly stated in the post, but often, criticism indicates that I could be doing a better job explaining something.  So this is an attempt to explain what fandom data can and can’t show, where I’m personally coming from, and what I’m intending my analyses to do.
This is a v1 attempt -- please give feedback about where I can further clarify! I'll be continuing to revise and update based on responses, so please click through to the original post.
The most common critiques I get fall into a few broad categories:
Incorrect or misleading. Some of my methods/stats/visualizations are wrong, misleading, or don’t match up with someone’s personal experience.  (See “My goals,” “The limitations of my ability to issue corrections,” and “How you can help with limitations in existing analyses”)
Wrong focus. I don’t do enough stats about some important topics -- e.g., race. (See “The limitations of my methods” and “How you can help with limitations in existing analyses”)
Not representative. I’m overgeneralizing about fandom and misrepresenting fans by only looking at certain fanworks or by failing to give important context.  (See “The limitations of focusing primarily on AO3”)
Overly authoritative. I’m speaking as an authority on fandom and acting as if my stats are The Truth. (See “My goals” and “What fandom stats can and can’t tell us”)
Agenda-driven. I’m using stats to try to justify fandom practices that some people disagree with, such as creating fanworks primarily about men or white characters -- or else I’m using stats to harangue fans into behaving differently, e.g. leaving more comments on fic. (See “The Toast agenda”)
I’ll try to explain where I’m coming from and address some of the most common criticisms here, but if you have more questions or concerns, please pass them along.
My goals
My fandom analysis posts are intended as fanworks -- by a fan, for other fans.  Meaning that:
I’m assuming the audience has personal experience in fandom and goodwill toward fans.
While I sometimes have beta readers, these are imperfect works, put together in my spare time.
These are shared out of love for fandom and other fans, and because I think other fans will be interested, rather than to further my career.
As some possibly useful context, I didn’t even mean to end up making a bunch of fandom stats posts in the first place. But when I was curious about fanworks and made a few graphs mostly for myself, other fans turned out to be really interested.  So I’ve kept on sharing what I’ve learned as I’ve continued to be curious.  And I started a dedicated stats sideblog because some fans who aren't interested in the other content on my main blog asked me to.
I do the best I can to be accurate and clear in my fandom stats posts.  But I sometimes make errors in analysis, gather unrepresentative data, fail to give context, present something unclearly, etc.  I really appreciate feedback from people who want to engage in thoughtful critique or ask questions when they spot issues with my work. It’s my goal to always update & correct/clarify my posts as I continue to learn more.
I don’t have plans to publish any of my work for a broader audience, or an academic audience. I have a separate career that doesn’t have to do with fan studies, and I do this for fun in my spare time… I think trying to rewrite for a different audience and publish things via official channels would sap a lot of my desire to do it.  When I’ve shared things at cons, they’ve been fan conventions, not academic conferences, and I’ve been there because fans expressed interest in hearing me talk about some of my stuff.
(Note: this doesn’t mean I don’t think fandom analysis can be worth publishing, or worth having a career in!  And I’m happy to share data and methodology with academics or other interested parties, and to have them redo the analyses/do similar analyses & present the results to other audiences.)
It’s possible I sometimes sound like I’m writing/speaking as An Authority On Fandom, but that’s not my intent. In fact, in fandom I rarely feel like an expert -- because I haven’t actually been active in the online fannish community for all that long, and I only have personal experience with a pretty narrow range of fandoms, fannish platforms, and fannish experiences.  I strongly value hearing the experiences and opinions of other fans.
The limitations of my methods
I tend to do analyses of fanworks only, and I analyze aggregate metadata (e.g., number of uses of tags) about large amounts of fanworks at once (thousands or millions of works).  That means I’m not looking at any individual works.  Those are good techniques for answering questions like:
Which ratings are most common on AO3?
Which are the most common fandoms, characters, or ships?
How has that changed over time?
How many kudos do different AO3 tags get?
What are the most popular genres on Fanfiction.net?
Sometimes I also compare data between archives (AO3, FFN, Wattpad), or look at fandom tagging activity on sites like Tumblr or DeviantART.  And occasionally I get access to a bunch of data taken from a site like IMDB and incorporate that, as well.
These methods/data sets have limitations:
I haven’t hand-categorized the data.  There may be errors.
I’m relying on other people to tell me what’s in their fanworks, so anything that’s not in the tags, my methods don’t catch.
Different people sometimes use the same tags differently, and I usually can’t detect that, either.  I assume that this usually just adds noise to my large data sets, but I also try to think about any systematic biases that might be introduced and to highlight them in my writeups.
I can’t add new information, like a character’s race, country of origin, canonical (a)sexuality when known, etc.  Neither AO3 nor FFN specify these attributes (although fans can and do sometimes create tags like “Canon Character of Color” or “Canon Asexual Character,” so to the extent that fans widely use these tags, I can do analyses).  I would really love to have data about race and other factors not in the tags; if you have ideas how to get it, I'd be grateful.
I can’t answer anything about the creators of the fanworks (e.g., demographics).
These are the methods that I am personally best equipped to do (in terms of tools, skills, experience).  I’ve enjoyed learning some new methods as part of doing these posts, but I’m definitely not good at everything.  So when my methods can’t provide the right data for someone’s question, it doesn’t mean the question is unanswerable, but I might not be the best person to answer the question.  See “How you can help with limitations in existing analyses” for more information.
The limitations of focusing mostly on AO3
I use AO3 a lot because:
it has the most flexible and best organized tagging system
it's easiest to search, sort, and filter
it already gives you a bunch of stats in the Sort & Filter sidebar, whenever you select a particular tag or combination of tags
I have now written a bunch of scripts to help me quickly get data from AO3
I have the best intuitions about AO3, because I use it the most, so I can do a better job catching errors in my work there
That doesn’t mean I think AO3 contains all fanworks or is representative of all fandom/fanworks.  It’s only one home of many for fanworks, and it’s got a lot of unusual characteristics.  For instance, because it was founded to provide a home to works that were considered sensitive or banned on other archives (explicit works, RPF, slash, etc.), it tends to have more of these kinds of works than many archives.  Initially, I didn’t tend to point this out and overgeneralized about fanworks from AO3.  These days I try to point out the limitations in generalizing.  (Though I do still find it interesting to learn about AO3 as an archive!)
The limitations of my ability to issue corrections
One good aspect of Tumblr is the way that it can reach broad audiences beyond one’s immediate followers.  However, the same easy reblogging that leads to this broad circulation comes with frustrations.  Even if I update the original post with corrections or clarifications, the old version of the post often continues to circulate.  Another difficulty is that not everyone sees the same conversation thread, so I often end up responding to the same concerns from a whole bunch of different people who aren’t seeing my response to others in different reblog branches.
There’s not that much to be done about this, but readers might want to keep in mind that what they see cross their dash is often not the latest version.   You can usually find my latest updates by clicking through to the original post.
How you can help with limitations in existing analyses
I wish I could do more stats about understudied topics like race in fanworks using my methods, and I wish others were studying these topics more, too. Fortunately, my methods are not the only methods, and I am not the only one doing analyses.  As one great example, if you are interested in how race factors into fandom demographics or into shipping, I strongly recommend @centrumlumina . They’ve done a demographics survey of 10K AO3 users and annual stats about the most common ships on AO3 (with hand-categorization of race).
There are many other great fandom stats folks as well (I’ve amassed an incomplete list).  If none of us have answered the questions you are interested in, I encourage you to try to answer questions yourself!  A lot of what I do is not actually very complicated (seriously, a lot of it is just doing a search on AO3 and writing down the number of results, or clicking on a tag and writing down the number of results) -- and there are some fan-made tools to help.
As one starting point, I recommend taking a look at the tools at fandomstats.org. I collaborated with @annathecrow and @esgibter to help fans do some types of quick stats -- right now only on AO3, but we welcome help broadening that!  I’ve also written some tutorials on gathering data, and as part of my fandom stats posts I generally share my raw data, which you are free to use to dig into my work further/continue the effort.
Time permitting, I am also happy to answer questions and help you brainstorm how to do your own analyses.
What fandom stats can and can’t tell us
I don't think my fandom stats tell deep truths about fandom. They can provide some insights into some aspects of fanworks: what kinds of fanworks exist on different platforms; how fans are using metadata (tags, etc.); how reader/consumer response to fanworks; etc. But trying to figure out what exactly that data means, and why fans are producing/consuming the things they are, is beyond the scope of the numbers.  So is determining the direction of cause and effect between variables that seem related (and ascertaining whether there are hidden underlying causes).
It’s additionally important to keep in mind that the results of fandom stats depend on the questions asked and the types of analyses done. There isn't any one right way to analyze data (there are sometimes bad ways to do it, but often several good ways). Different ways of looking at data tell you different things.  Even a good analyst can only see part of the story, depending on what they think to ask, and how.  My goals are to clearly explain my thought processes and methods in gathering data, doing analyses, and presenting the results -- in large part so other people can spot potential issues with my assumptions and methods.  I always welcome suggestions for follow up work or clarifications, when people think there is more to the story.
A final point: I don’t ascribe any moral judgments to my fandom stats -- that is, I don't intend to imply any opinions about whether fans are doing good or bad things. You can form your own opinions from the numbers, or use them to support arguments.  But I try to keep any opinions or judgments out of my stats posts (though I may sometimes share them in other meta).
The Toast agenda
I’m not setting out to prove anything when I do an analysis -- I’m motivated by curiosity (or sometimes a desire to help other fans answer questions or find rarer fanworks).  I’m also never setting out to justify (or argue against) any fan behaviors.  As I said above, I don’t think fandom stats data can answer questions like “Is it right/good for fans to do [X]?”
A few of my personal tenets regarding data and its role in discourse:
The answer to almost every interesting question about fandom (or any complex system) is “It’s complicated/nuanced, and the answer depends on the details of how you ask the question.”  I try to explain my starting assumptions and to map out some of the complexity of the data, where I can. There’s always more to the story, though.
There are many reasons that groups of people do things.  We shouldn’t ever look for just one reason.  I don’t like questions like, “Is there so much fanfic written about white cis men because of bias in media or bias in fandom?” -- I don’t think it’s an either/or, nor are those the only possible factors.  My own data gathering is not an attempt to support either side of such arguments.
For example, there are strong systemic biases in my society (US) based on race, gender, sexuality, class, size, ability, and other factors.  This leads to, among other things, a lack of balanced representation in media, and a tendency to privilege certain kinds of storytelling narratives over others.  Both media creators and fan creators (and fan consumers) exist in this same stew of biases, and we're all affected by them. This makes it unlikely that only one of these groups is responsible for phenomena like lack of representation in fanworks.
Data is good food for thought and discussion fodder, but can't tell us what to do.
It’s also the case that I have opinions about lots of things.  Nobody is truly impartial.  When I set out to gather data and test hypotheses, I try not to let my own beliefs or assumptions bias my conclusions, and I am often surprised by what I find in the data -- but it’s unavoidable that my own worldview influences the questions I think to ask and other factors in the analyses I do.
A few facts that may affect my methods, assumptions, and blind spots:
I’m white.
I’m a cis woman.
I’m queer, and I have identified as queer/bisexual for my entire adult life (~20 years).
I’m poly, and I have been in poly relationships for almost my entire adult life.
I live in the US.
I’ve always lived in suburbs or cities.
I’ve always been financially secure.
I’m not religious or spiritual.
I’m liberal to extremely liberal on most political issues.
I have academic background in science.
I work in tech.
As an adult, I’ve mostly been active in the Sherlock fandom, since 2013.  I previously read some fanfic in the Harry Potter fandom in ~2005-2008.  When I was a teen (mostly pre-internet), I was producing fanfic and fanart (for just me and my friends) in the Star Trek and Peter Gabriel/Genesis fandoms.
I write queer fiction of many stripes -- fanfic (mostly M/M and/or queer poly) and original (mostly F/F and/or queer poly).  A lot of it is mature or explicit, and occasionally kinky.
I write het.
I write gen.
I’ve written RPF and self-insert stories.
I love a lot of problematic media.  I’m happy both loving it and critiquing it.
I’m in favor of more people (and more diverse people) writing stories, and I’m fine with people writing any kind of fiction that they want to.  I’m also in favor of having critical discussions about storytelling, and getting creators to think critically about the kinds of stories they are and are not contributing to the world.
Whew -- thanks for reading! :)  Another fact about me is that I’m strongly in favor of self-examination and self-improvement.  I’m always striving to do better, and I welcome feedback on my fandom stats, on these notes, or on anything else.
Edit: Thanks to @flourish and @fffinnagain for some insightful feedback on earlier drafts of some sections of this post.  All errors and issues are mine!

My Thoughts Regarding Raven VS Twilight...
Tumblr media
So at the end of the Season 5 premiere of ScrewAttack’s DEATH BATTLE, it was revealed that the following match was going to be featuring Raven, of DC Comics’ Teen Titans, facing off against My Little Pony’s Twilight Sparkle.
As a fan of both characters and the idea of the match, many have actually approached me wondering what my thoughts are on this upcoming episode. I grew up watching Teen Titans and people know me for being a brony, so one can imagine I would be excited.
Unfortunately, and perhaps to the surprise of some, I am actually... honestly not happy. For a number of reasons.
Now just a disclaimer, I am a fan of DEATH BATTLE, and this column is in no way meant to come off as negative or disrespectful towards the showrunners, RoosterTeeth, and others involved with the show. However, I do feel the need to express my extended thoughts on this matter, as unknown to many, the announcement of this episode... kinda unintentionally threw a wrench in the works. Also, please be aware that I’m not writing this article with the intent of seeking sympathy; I would like to think of this more so as an informative “what could have been” type of entry. You’ll see why momentarily.
So... I’m going to drop one heck of a bomb. This is something I wouldn’t normally do, but I figured because of how rather... coincidental this ended up being, I may as well be open about it, especially as some of you are probably going to want to know more reasons as to why I wouldn’t be happy about this episode being produced. For those of you who follow what I do, I think you guys will understand instantaneously when I post this one image:
Tumblr media
...Yeah. This was... originally going to be a future episode of Crossover X’s Battle Royale. Not a bonus episode, not a Patron-Punch Out or anything; a full-on researched episode planned for our first season. ...How awkward. Heh. (Side note, yes I did get permission from my partner and higher-up to openly discuss this.)
Now just to clarify before a particular group of people jump to conclusions: first of all, yes, this is something we had planned months before DEATH BATTLE announced it. And no, DEATH BATTLE did not "steal" our idea. They couldn't have, as no one outside the team has access to our private documents and no one afaik has really talked about this match outside our team. In fact I’ve been told that apparently this was actually a popular suggestion among fans, and it’s possible DB may have even began developing this long before us. Really, this is all one big coincidence. A pretty shocking and surprising one at that. And so with the episode becoming a DEATH BATTLE, it seems like it’s no longer on the road to being a BR.
That said, I did want to do something interesting to commemorate both the cancellation and announcement of this match: the behind-the-scenes development process!
Firstly, just to show the proof that we did have this planned long before DB announced the episode, here are a couple of screenshots that date how far back we're talking:
Tumblr media
This here is the project folder where most of the assets were kept. Sprites, character renders, etc. Kept this on a handy flash drive.
Tumblr media
This is the research document put together in anticipation for the BR episode.(For some reason, someone switched around their positions in the thumbnail and title, even though properly it would have been known as Raven VS Twilight.) Because I spent a number of years looking into Twilight through the show, as well as various threads on different websites, I was able to contribute a wealth of information to her side of things. Additionally, I had acquired every episode of the Teen Titan animated series, as well as access to the tie-in comics made for the show, and was looking through the first season for Raven.
Research and assets weren't the only thing I was contributing to the episode however. I was also in the process of creating unique sprite edits for Twilight.
Tumblr media
To explain, Twilight Sparkle was originally a unicorn before Season 4 of the Friendship is Magic cartoon. After the Season 3 finale, she had become an alicorn and acquired a pair of wings, granting her flight (and making her slightly taller). Unfortunately, there aren't really many (if any at all) sprite sheets specifically of alicorn Twilight. At least from what I was able to find. Sheets do exist of unicorn Twilight however, but her new wings would have to be manually added.
Tumblr media
These are sprites from urimas, who was originally making these for a now cancelled MLP RPG fangame. Since the cancellation, the sprites were apparently made available for public use as long as credit was given, so I selected these sprites for the battle. (The art style may seem familiar to those who have seen Starscream VS Rainbow Dash: this is the same sprite artist who had made those sprites for Rainbow.)
Tumblr media
On top of that, there were additional assets released that allowed others to add wings, a horn or more to custom made pony sprites. Using those wing assets, I recolored them and applied them to Twilight, though my job was not finished here.
Tumblr media
For those who haven't noticed (at least if you’re an enthusiast of the show), the style of wings are actually that of a standard pegasus, but they don't match that of Twilight's wings: they take on a unique style all their own. And I did not want to do the character injustice by just lazily leaving the sprites as is.
Tumblr media
So I began work on redesigning her wings and applying them to each individual sprite. Thankfully, while there are no sheets of alicorn Twi, there were plenty of other pixel art and renders of her for me to study and recreate her wings from.
Tumblr media
Overall this is something I've been working on for almost 3 years. These were originally meant for use in Timmy vs Twilight, a researched fight I'm writing for DeviantArt, and were also used in Spike vs Bowser Jr as Twilight makes an appearance in the fight's story. When I learned that my desired fight for Crossover X's Battle Royale was greenlit, I immediately got to work to revamp the sprites' wings for the animation.
Tumblr media
Raven was actually the third opponent I had in mind for Twilight. Originally I thought to Hermoine Granger from Harry Potter, but then realized it wouldn’t really be a fair contest. A popular suggestion I’ve seen from fans was Robin, the avatar from Fire Emblem: Awakening vs Twilight, which ended up being my replacement idea for a good while; but then I learned my friends and co-workers on the team had other ideas for Robin, and it also didn’t seem likely he/she would have been able to easily counter Twilight’s power either. At least from what I gathered. So I settled with Raven, but only her animated counterpart like how Fatal Fiction approached Starfire. Which made the match all the more closer and interesting in my opinion.
I had a lot planned for the fight itself, including the plot, character interactions, ideas for how the battle would've ended for either character winning, etc. I even had something special planned in regards to who I wanted to bring on for voices, and hypothetically, a particular real-world location this episode could have premiered at.
Tumblr media
Buuut sadly, from the looks of things, it seems like we probably won't be handling this episode anymore. Welp.
[throws all of that work and plans in the garbage and sets it ablaze]
...Nah, I kid I kid. But still, it is pretty shocking and also disappointing to me because I had such high hopes for making it one of Battle Royale's best episodes despite how one would have viewed the announcement of such a match.
Now I know some of you guys are probably going to go "So what? Why not just go forth with the episode anyway?"
Well honestly, I don't know how we can. I imagine some are going to see it as a sort-of "response or disagreement" to ScrewAttack's version of the episode. Some are gonna call it unoriginal. It's weird too because when I pitched the episode, I DID NOT THINK this was a match-up the folks at SA had any interest in doing, given that at least from what I've seen, it hasn't really popped up in many areas as a popular suggestion. The match-up obviously has its close, tight connections. I guess I just underestimated the power of fans in this case.
Tumblr media
At the same time, I can't say that I don't have my concerns for the episode. I won't cite who, but I've been told that the research being utilized for Raven will be that of a composite, and not specifically the Teen Titans animated series, an incarnation of her which is arguably more closely related to Twilight than the others. This raises concerns as the mainline DC Raven, at least from what I’ve been informed (I could always be wrong as reports are conflicting) is pretty powerful, quite possibly way too much for her opponent to handle, which kind of ruins the idea of the match for me. Not even because Twilight may potentially get stomped, but for the fact that it’ll feel like another “David vs Goliath” match where David sadly loses and faces a horrible fate for the enjoyment of others.
This was my worst fear of the match going in, which is why I wanted to limit Raven to just her animated counterpart, who is already impressive enough on her own and actually makes the match more closer. I'm not sure why different versions of her are being involved, but it is what it is. (And yes, I know DEATH BATTLE often involves multiple continuities in research, but there have been instances in the past where a character was limited to a single continuity and its tie-in media, especially due to differences in interpretation and for fairness on both ends.)
Tumblr media
I'm surprised that Raven wasn't pitted up against other popular opponent ideas for her, such as Marvel's Scarlet Witch (whose movie counterpart will be reappearing in Infinity War this May), or Jean Grey (who is the focus of the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix film releasing in November). Opponents such as them probably would have justified the decision to use mainstream Raven, but I guess they wanted to take things in a different direction, and I guess doing another Marvel vs DC fight after Black Panther VS Batman could have been jarring to some viewers looking for variety. I'm additionally surprised that we're getting another MLP character so soon. Twilight is someone I have wanted to see (and also use) in vs matches, but I didn't expect to see her in the second episode of Season 5.
I will be pleasantly surprised if Twilight SOMEHOW pulls this off (the only way I see how is through hax abilities, but even then I do believe Raven holds the speed advantage). I also imagine DEATH BATTLE may not be including the x4 alicorn boost, Rainbow Power, or anything else that could help Twilight. But honestly, at this time, it's really hard for me to believe Twilight stands a chance. Which is kinda disappointing.
Then again, I don't know what the plan for the episode is beyond that. I'm currently unsure if I should even watch the episode, but I will come to a decision before it comes out.
Still, to those in charge of the project from a research, animation, production, performance and direction-standpoint, I wish thee well with the episode. I'm personally uneasy with the initial direction the episode is heading towards (which could be my bias talking honestly), but I'd rather not let that blind the creative freedom of others. Even if said freedom could potentially lead to the undeserving, gruesome (but at least non-canon) death of one of these characters.
...Now I just need to find out what to replace that BR episode with. Months of planning and preparation are now down the drain and I need a new idea and strategy. I've been given suggestions on what to replace it with from my team (who have been supportive of me upon learning the bad news; love you guys & thanks again ❤), but I'm not sure yet. I guess until then, stay tuned?
[Shout-out to DJ for proofreading this post and Strunton for the DB thumbnail.]

All Good Things… The Good With the Bad.
All Good Things… The Good With the Bad. #Blog #Bloggerstribe #AllGoodThings… 24th June 2020 Hello, Chaps and Chapettes,
Tumblr media
(Source: https://www.keengamer.com/articles/guides/list-of-common-fallout-4-pc-errors-and-how-to-fix-them/ ) It might have seemed like I stopped for a little bit there, huh? In actual fact, I have still been writing, but more or less in the background rather than doing a full-on post like this. Does that mean I’ve been “neglecting my duties” or “forgetting the challenge” I set myself to write for thirty minutes a day? Well, sort of. I cannot lie. Let’s see if we can analyze what happened here and correct the error, shall we? The main hiccup was actually on Friday where I did not write anything at all. I did end up writing that blog on Saturday and followed it up with the actual Saturday blog which I wrote and posted on Sunday, but by then I was already going back on several guidelines that I’d set myself. The first was to ensure that I wrote thirty minutes a day, this was missed on Friday, and the second was to have a break on Sunday.
I’ll come back to Friday in a bit and how I’ll resolve that in the future but I also want to talk about why Monday and Tuesday also didn’t happen. Monday was an oddly exhausting day. The heat has been creeping up this week, today being the hottest so far, but Monday was still cool. I had to take a nap after work and then when I did sit down to write, what I wanted to write was not one of these. Instead, I wanted to work on “Scoundrels”, a story about colorful ponies living in apocalyptic times. They swear, take drugs, shoot guns, it’s fun to write. The reason I wanted to write that, was because on Tuesday I attended an online workshop by a fellow writer who goes by the codename “Somber. I know there’s non-bronies who read this on my Tumblr so, to summarise, they wrote a particularly famous FanFiction called “Fallout Equestria; Project Horizons”, millions of peeps have read it. It’s also a spin-off from an equally successful story called “Fallout: Equestria” (written by another fanfiction writer, KKat). Somber has a background teaching English so a class on Creative Writing was practically extra studies for my university course!
Tumblr media
(Art by me, see https://derpibooru.org/images/2200843 )
The workshop was brilliant. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to workshop my story as we ran out of time but I didn’t feel too down about this. I made friends with a few other fellow writers and so could happily learn and share ideas with them. This ran on quite late and by the time it had ended, the clock was telling me I wouldn’t wake up for work if I didn’t attempt to sleep. That, neatly, leads me to today. As you can see, although I’ve had a busy day of work, walking to and from the shops and watching “Game Night” with my brother, I still managed to find the time to write this. That’s because tonight I had the time. That’s important. Friday, the time wasn’t there. I had to be there for a friend who was in need and since my chat, I have it on good authority that their life is looking up. Sunday was father’s day and I wanted to see both dad and stepdad, which I accomplished. Both men had a great day and felt loved, which was another mission accomplished. Sunday night was blitzed by a migraine and it took two paracetamol two hours to put those fires in my brain out. Monday, as said, was a very tiring day. But I also spent time writing something, even if it wasn’t this. So there was still something completed by the close of the day. Tuesday, there was work, I had my mother pop over for something, I had to cook dinner, and despite all of this still managed to make Somber’s workshop and find writing allies. Do you see where I’m going with this? Basically, just because you don’t get done what you wanted to do, do not look at it as a wasted day. Even a rest day is a success, so long as it is used to let you prepare for some harder work ahead. You are not failing if you didn’t hit that word count, or forgot to do something you wanted to do, or missed that walk to slim down the spare tractor tyre your gut has become. Even little accomplishments are still a win in the grand scheme of things and believe me they make all the difference. And sometimes, if someone you know, care about, or love is in need of you, then you should down tools to help them. Let me reiterate that it should be somebody you care about or at least someone who will return the favor along the line. There are people, even family, who can be a drain on your time, resources, and energy. I learned that the hard way last week (see my blog about bullies). Follow your head in these instances, especially if it is aligned with your heart. Most of all, I want you to take this away with you. Did you wake up today? Do you know how many didn’t get out of bed? Pulled a sickie? Or gave up? You didn’t so in that sense you’re already winning. Now go treat yourself to some cake, champ, you earned it. Stay safe, stay happy. All good things, Love, Scaramouche. X Oh, eerrrr, still here? Okay, let me square with you. Thirty mins just ran out but I wanted to include this; I am writing a spin-off of that “Fallout: Equestria,” series too, as I mentioned, called “Scoundrels”. I did have a lot of the story already up in my FIMFiction library, but I have unpublished it. Here are my reasons; I didn’t like how confusing it was. It felt like it started in the middle of a story. I had made choices as a writer that took the story in some strange directions. I made the plot too complicated. I made some of the good characters unlikeable. I made it too long while not much/ too much happened. So, I am holding onto what I wrote. I want to rewrite it, so that story that you may or may not have read does still exist and isn’t a waste of time, it just needs surgery. When it’s ready, you’ll be able to see it again. Until then, here’s a sneak peek at “Scoundrels”, the ponies of the apocalypse story I will be writing, have edited and polished before I publish it as fanfiction. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
(Artist: Brainiac - see https://derpibooru.org/profiles/Brainiac ) ~ Scoundrels Written by Scaramouche “War,” a voice, masculine and gravelly, haunted my hangover. “War never changes.” It wasn’t much, but it was enough to stir me from where I’d attempted to make my early grave. My snout had the telltale feeling you got when you accidentally snorted water while submerged in a pool... Or hit too much Dash. I pushed my hooves out around me before my eyes were able to open and felt tiny canisters rattle away from me wherever I moved. My ribs hurt, telling me I hadn’t found a nice or even barely comfortable place to flop. The information fed back to me from all my senses came to the conclusion that I’d bucked up again. Daring to wake, I cracked my eyes open for as long as I could muster and fluttered the lids ‘til I could make out the shapes of a flickering square of light in the night-time room. Black and white images flashed through the screen of ponies dressed in armor and uniforms, those in the foreground attempting an escape with their wounded while the “best and bravest” continued to fight, to injure, to die. The image changed to Wonderbolts tearing over a coal cloud that once belonged to a shining city. I realized it was Manehattan, the place I’d hailed from. I knew from the shadow of a building topped with a huge pony head choking on the fumes. The Pegasi just seemed like haunting crows over that havoc. After the Manehattan skyline lingered for a few seconds, it switched to a shot taken behind ponies hiding from the invisible foe in a shady tunnel. Their silhouettes were huddled and perpetually expecting the worst of what was to come. Image after image along with the low, tedious voice seemed to mingle with the throbbing headache I’d gained. It reminded me that as gloomy as these images were, they were only the precursor for the apocalyptic times that came after them. I watched, laid lazily on my side among spent stims I’d used to forget the woes of the new world. I couldn’t help thinking that those dumb saps who had lived nearly a hundred years ago never knew how lucky they were. They could still trust the folks either side of them and that was more than could be said for most ponies this side of a century. “... But out of the devastation that arose from the wars, a few were able to reach stables that could house and shield them underground.” The narrator of the scenes kept going with his spiel regardless of whether I was listening or not. I looked about, but it quickly became apparent to me that the voice was just that. A recording from a stallion no doubts long gone now. There was nopony else in the place but for me that I could see. Nonetheless, he persisted. “Your family was part of that group and took refuge in Stable Thirteen.” On-screen, a snap of the giant cog that had once locked up this subterranean vault could be seen. “No, they weren’t, pal,” I grouched, squinting about the area still while battling with some persistently annoying amber locks of mane in my eyes. Something in this place was still trying to live, based on the squealing of a harmed fan spinning in the walls. Thanks to the projection lamp, I could see the tiles that dripped from the ceilings as age and erosion pulled them down. Wires knotted into nooses hung out from the ceiling gaps. Across dirty, rusted floors, the corpses of chairs lay on their sides and backs, stricken by the last unknown executions that had taken place here. Near me and my graveyard of used drug containers, a card crate lay on its side in a beaten state. “You are the first generation born in this stable to have not known the-the-the--” Apparently, I still wasn’t to know what “the” was. Above me, the box that had created this depressing light and sound show for me fizzed, crackled, sparked, then died. All light failed and draped a veil casually over me and space. Yet, this wasn’t as terrifying to me as might have been to somepony else. I sighed, relaxed, and let the gentle black patch encourage my head to heal. The festering stable was dead, the complaining sounds of the vents now a memory, and it was good. It was calming. I could maybe forget everything and fall back into a graceful slumber with it. After all, a ship in the harbor is a ship that’s safe... Of course, fate intervened. “Breeze! Breeze, where are you?” The voice was distant, but it was growing closer. “Gypsy Breeze, I swear on the spirit of Celestia, if you don’t get your ass into gear…” Fresh, battery-powered light began to dawn around the edges of the forever-open doorway into the corridors, confirming that the calling, living voice wasn’t far from finding me. “Buck,” I grunted to myself and pushed back the pain sloshing side to side in my cranium. I had to get myself up before they found me and the evidence littered around me. My legs complained but lifted me, allowing me to stand and let my brain cease paddling about in my skull. I swung a hoof out, brought it down, then my face immediately met the oxidized floor once more as a giggling Dash inhaler tripped me and twirled away. “Breeze?” They’d heard my tumble. “Buck,” I hissed painfully and scrambled back up, firing up a spell. I knew the caller in the halls would see the light but hoped I’d be quick enough. Despite the magic throbbing behind my junked-out eyes, I gathered all the emptied Dash I could see in the enchanted light. Catching as many as I could levitate, I shoved them into the deteriorated box, managing to slip the last of them away when a blinding orb swung through the door. I covered my bleary eyes and snarled out at a feeling only a vampire pony in the baking sun would understand. “Gypsy!” The dazzling sprite squeaked. “That’s my name— Buck, Hayfever, could you drop the light of that thing? My bucking eyes are about to explode…” mercifully, the beam lowered to ground level, allowing me to partially see the mare I knew behind it. Her sunset orange wings were spread in preparation to once more admonish me while the expression on the pegasus remained concerned. “You split from me again, Breeze. Ottawa said this stable is particularly dangerous, we shouldn’t be going off alone when--” “Ottawa was wrong,” I skulked somehow towards the door and waved my hoof back the way she’d come from. “I caught a terminal back up that way and… I dunno, something about the water talisman failing? Either way, the pony meant to fix it shuffled out the main door, and never came back. After that, the rest of the dwellers overthrew the overstallion and let themselves out of their own accord. Probably likely that nopony’s been here since.” If I’d have sounded more sure of myself in that last comment, I might not have seen doubt spread across her freckled, gold-lit face. “No, somepony has been here before us,” she suggested, “I found the mattresses pulled out of their rooms and laid together in the atrium. There was waste and broken gear that could only have come from outside too. Could be scavs, could be raiders, either way, we don’t want to take our chances.” “It could have easily been the Stable Thirteen ponies too,” I countered, “especially if they were going back and forth in and out of here, not wanting to--” I interrupted myself, as a false step kicked something, which ricocheted off of the metal wall and swirled unfortunately into the light of Hayfever’s torch. It only took her a second to realize what it was and I was already cringing guiltily when the light raised back accusingly at me. “Gypsy Breeze, you silly mare,” she scolded as well as any experienced mother could, “Using? Again? I thought you were beating this.” “It’s not mine,” I played the part of a lying teenager as best as I could, “it’s from those raiders you were bitching about--” “Oh, so now we believe in the raiders?” She had another quick examination of the inhaler and sighed, ruffling her wings in irritation as she walked past me, ensuring her hoofsteps echoed her annoyance. “When I agreed to hide your troubles from the rest of Helping Hooves, it was on the promise that you were going to make an effort to quit from them. Not so that you could privately indulge in the stuff.” She collected my saddlebag, discarded on a spineless chair, and was about to toss it to me when she had second thoughts. At my protests, she flipped the flap open first and rifled through up, digging out what she had expected to find almost instantly. Five more full inhalators of Dash were plucked out and tossed into the void of the room before she was comfortable returning my near-empty sack to me. “I’m not doing it to be an ass to you, Gypsy,” she said as I mournfully took the bag and slipped it back on. “As mayor of Helping Hooves I have a duty to look out for everypony and that includes you. But if you’re going to endanger lives this way, I’ll have no choice but…” I waited for what kind of penalty she’d place on me. Yet, all she could do was gaze at me, not mad, just disappointed. I gave a low groan, both out of the pain of coming down and the guilt of letting down a mare who was just looking out for my best interests. “Can we just get out of here?” I pleaded, “the air in here is making me feel sick.” “You sure it’s just the air?” She thrust a hoof forward, directing me on the way to head next. “But you’re right. Let’s just get the spark batteries Ottawa needs and high-tail it out of here…” To be continued...

Unleash Your Super Brain To Learn Faster And Work Smarter | Jim Kwik
Tumblr media
Jim: How’s everybody feeling in these days? Members: k. Jim: So when I ask you a query, if it feel proper to you, i want you to assert super. How’s all people feeling at present? Participants: tremendous. Jim: tremendous. And that i wanna honor you for being here due to the fact that i’ve been going to seminars and events my whole existence. How is it so far for each person? Members: first-rate. Super. Jim: Yeah, it used to be a experiment, right? Various individuals consider it can be your retention when folks fail to remember something. Let’s do this, for instance, take a right hand, shake it out…How many people right here wanna gain knowledge of rapid? How many people wanna don’t forget extra? Participants: yes. Jim: Yeah? Watch this. Make a fist, now, put it to your chin. Where’s your chin everyone? So the quantity one rule, the art of reminiscence, the art of learning is the art of attention. The artwork of learning is the artwork of attention. And rather, that’s the place commentary that is the place presence is available in. And so i will be sharing with you a few of my favourite procedures and states to be in a position to learn any subject or talent, rapid. What number of humans like that suggestion? Now, with a purpose to be ready to try this, let me first begin by using acknowledging you for being right here, due to the fact that I feel there is the success formula and it takes two elements. It takes first, displaying up, 50% of success is just displaying up. And that i respect your ability to only show up here today since most men and women aren’t here. Actual or proper, proper? I imply, i will ask all units of questions that we all know the solutions to, proper or real, correct? And so we show up right here and most people do not exhibit up and that i feel in lifestyles, you wanna show up. Show up in your well being, exhibit up for your relationships, exhibit up in your career, show up for your carrier. However just showing up, is that simply gonna get the job performed? No, you have got to what? Yeah. You play full out, right? You have to play full out. What number of individuals here like to play? Incidentally, who were the fastest rookies on the planet? Members: children. Jim: Who? Contributors: children. Jim: I did this to a gaggle of 10,000 folks from 60 nations, and a entire table yelled out pygmies. And if anybody is aware of why pygmies are such nice rookies, please inform me.But youngsters, right? Kids, how speedy can a child be trained a musical instrument compared to an grownup? How quick can they learn a 2d or 1/3 language? They study quick, right? Why do children be taught quickly? Because why? Members: . Jim: they do not know. Good, what else? Participants: Curious. Jim: they are curious. They have attention. What else? Contributors: . Jim: they have got time, without doubt. Members: . No limits. Jim: No limits. They don’t have the discovered helplessness. Superb. Contributors: no longer desirous about the personal loan payments. Jim: they may be no longer serious about the personal loan fee. Focus, proper? I mean, they may be curious and so they play lots. Do not forget, as a kid, you went to your acquaintances, you used to be like, "You wanna come out and play? Do you wanna play?" however in a while it was once…We got rid of the position of play and we began announcing, "Let’s hang out." right? And then all of a sudden, there is this difference, right? And that curiosity is important also. There may be a Rumi quote from the poet mentioned, ‘alternate your cleverness for bewilderment." Is that a exceptional phrase, bewilderment? When’s the last time you have been in that state? We’re talking about genius states and superhero states, when’s the final time you were in that state of bewilderment? I imply, so who’s in manipulate of your state, incidentally? Who’s in manage of the way you think? What’s this? Once we’re defining a state, how would you outline a state? What does it mean? It can be like your mood. What else? This is where the lively section is available in here. It is your feelings, like, a image of your intellect and your body, how you feel. Here is the important thing, do that. Knowledge, do this, put your arms out, information combined with emotion becomes a long-time period memory, long-term reminiscence. What number of people recognize this? How many folks, you hear a tune and it would take you again to while you were a baby? Carry your hand. How many men and women, it’s not a music but perhaps it’s a fragrance or meals that will take you again many years? Considering that information mixed with emotion became an extended-time period memory, correct? Considering that we’re now not logical, we’re what? We do not do matters logically always, we do matters what? Emotionally, proper? On the grounds that we’re now not logical, we’re organic. We’re now not logical, we’re organic. And so, what i’m gonna speak about is easy methods to release what we call your super mind. I’m gonna speak concerning the states, these emotional states where the satisfactory of you suggests up automatically, where you do not have these limits. Now, in my breakout, i’m gonna speak in regards to the procedures, easy methods to read faster, the way to recall names, step-by-step, easy methods to be trained an additional language. Those are the techniques, however you continuously begin with state. Everyone needs to write down this down, all studying is state elegant. All finding out is state dependent. That the emotional state that you just feel when you are finding out whatever gets anchored to the learning, does that make feel? By the way, what was once the state that you simply felt again in college notably? How did you most of the time feeling category? Participants: Bored.Jim: Bored. And the opposite type, other half of of the classes is like stressed, correct? Now, on a scale of 0 to 10, what’s boredom? A scale of zero to 10? Members: Zero. Jim: Zero. Something occasions zero becomes what? Contributors: Zero. Jim: Zero. And that’s why plenty of folks don’t consider what they be taught, is the emotional state. Does that make sense? Members: Yeah. Jim: Let’s scan this out. Rise up real fast. Stand up. I haven’t any slides for you.I’m simply gonna take you by means of exercises. How many individuals like experiential studying? So it gets on your physique, correct? So what we’re gonna do here is we’re gonna play some games. We already mentioned that kids are the quickest learners, proper? Youngsters are the fastest newbies, how many men and women right here suppose such as you wanna learn extra in much less time? Carry your hand. Elevate your hand when you have books on your shelf you have not learn. More than one and becomes, like, Lisa Nichols speak about, turns into shelf-help now not self-support, correct? What number of people here get more than 10 emails a day? What number of individuals got here right here at present, like, to have a greater reminiscence? How many folks forgot why you came here at present? Have you ever achieved that? Walk into a room of your own home and just forgot why you’re there? Anyone suppose like senior moments are coming a little bit bit early? Like, you are in the…If you’re in the bathe and that you could don’t forget for those who shampooed your hair and you come to be doing it twice, correct? Or you misplace things. How many persons here know anyone may be for my part who leave out locations things all the time? The faraway manage, the Apple faraway, their mobilephone? Have you ever ever discovered your self calling your own telephone hoping you saved it on? Or maybe you lose some thing like your car keys or whatever bigger like your vehicle? You ever see the individuals out in the department shops and they’re using their, like, auto alarm making an attempt to determine the place they parked their car? And what about names? What number of men and women here honestly, you could have situation remembering men and women’s names? What number of individuals have forgot the name of anyone on this room? Correct? And so, let’s start with my identify, optimistically, you remember, my identify is Jim Kwik with Kwik studying and that i aid folks to be taught quickly. The query I perpetually get is set my last title, my final name fairly is Kwik. I failed to trade it to do what I do. With a reputation like Kwik, that you may say my existence and my fate was once typically planned out. I needed to be a runner again in institution, which is a lot of strain when it says Kwik right to your shirt. I must be very careful once I’m using seeing that the worst identify to have for your driver’s license while you get pulled over for speeding is the name Kwik, right? Because you’re not gonna speak your approach out of that dashing ticket. And that i get to do my mission, my dharma, which helps men and women to study faster. I suppose if there is any ability to be ready to grasp within the 21st century, whatever that is gonna be a real tangible capabilities, it’s your capacity to gain knowledge of speedily. Most effective considering the fact that it is a sign of the instances, since digital overload, digital distraction, I mean, so many things vying for our awareness. How do you get things performed? But after I speak about velocity, i don’t talk about simply…I’m now not talking about frantic pace for the reason that you might clearly study turbo and truly have an ease, a confidence, peace of intellect. What number of folks would like to have that? Be able to prevail but also have this level of harmony inside of your self, this clarity of concept? And it is the proposal what number of men and women right here read "Seven Habits of particularly mighty persons" by using Dr.Stephen Covey? What is the seventh dependancy? Male: Sharpen the saw. Jim: Sharpen the saw, very good. Sharpen the saw. The metaphor right here is when you’ve got all this timber to cut and you have got a saw with dull blade, when do you wanna sharpen it? Members: before. Jim: earlier than you slicing the wood, proper? Considering the fact that various persons are gonna workis gonna work quite a bit more difficult with it in case you have a stupid blade and they’re going to ought to sweat and perspire and work three or four instances more difficult when they would have sharpened their noticed. And so, studying methods to learn, like, Vishen was once speaking about, that’s you sharpening the noticed, on the grounds that some thing that comes afterwards is gonna be less difficult, correct? And so, is that individual isn’t working tougher, they’re working what? Participants: Smarter: Jim: Smarter. And one of the first-class approaches to work smarter is entry your genius states. So i am gonna test this out, we mentioned that youngsters are the fastest novices, right? That they have this curiosity, they usually play always. Let’s have a look at what number of…What number of people right here…Carry your hand if you are willing to play. Now, it is been shown in science, the study, by means of doing, by using playing more simply creates neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. What’s neurogenesis? Individuals: New development. Jim: New growth, new brain cells. What number of men and women like the inspiration of making extra new mind cells?` What about neuroplasticity, what does that mean? Participants: more connections. Jim: extra connections. So intelligence in a technique is not necessarily…Like, Einstein didn’t have a bigger mind than someone here. Most of the time, it was once truly less, he had a smaller mind, but in designated areas of his mind, he had tremendously connectedness. He did these inspiration experiments the place he would put himself in these brainwave states, peculiarly theta state, the theta state of creativity. That’s the state that you’re in whilst you bathe. What number of persons realize when you’re showering you provide you with all these exclusive strategies? And it’s normally whilst you can not write anything down, proper? And so, that’s the Theta state, that’s a cozy state of creativity. You’re prompted, you come up with new strategies, new matters come out of you, right? And i honestly took six showers this morning, simply to prepare for this presentation. So it puts you in inventive state, and so he had extra connections in precise areas. And so you could promote that with the aid of playing extra. And so what i’m gonna ask you to do right now’s i am gonna ask you to seek out two folks within the room you have no idea, pair up in threes, go.In finding two men and women you have no idea, pair up in threes. So we’re gonna go through a rapid activity and, sincerely, what I wanna do, we wanna speak about superheroes loads. I grew up with learning challenges, some of you understand, I had a brain damage once I was 5 years historic, a head harm that left me with precise disabilities. Lecturers would have got to repeat themselves three, 4, five, six times, and then eventually i’d simply fake I understood however I didn’t, lots of the times did not realise. I had very bad focus disorders, I had very unhealthy memory. It took me a further three and a half of years simply to learn the way to read and that i learned tips on how to read by way of studying comic books genuinely late at night.Something about….Any comic book enthusiasts right here or superhero fanatics, geeks? Whatever about watching on the superheroes and excellent versus evil and the illustrations that the notion that one character can make a change. What number of persons think one individual can make a difference? Correct? That they provide hope and they furnish actual help? And when I look right here, I seem at a room full of superheroes, since I mentioned, within the beginning, I stated, you realize, it can be just showing up after which taking part in full out. And so what does the superhero do? They have got…What is the defining characteristics of a superhero? They’ve superpowers, correct? And does what number of folks right here have determined their specific ability, their superpower? So you’re discovering it, proper? Your distinctive knowledge, detailed strengths, whatever that’s particular to you. But then just having a superpower, does that make you a superhero? You need to use that vigour for what for what? Individuals: good.Jim: For good, for some kind of motive on high of that, proper? And so, i really like sharing house and time with trendy-day superheroes. However there are additionally some present day-day supervillains, right? These ideas of, these phenomena of, like, digital overload. How many individuals think, like, when you’re studying anything it seems like you are taking a sip of water out of a hearth hose? Elevate your hand, proper? And no longer just that, it has a result on our wellness also, correct? They call it know-how fatigue syndrome. Understanding fatigue syndrome, in view that the whole thing is a syndrome, proper? So, greater blood pressure, a compression of leisure time, extra sleeplessness or despite the fact that you may have slightly bit of free time, you cannot even enjoy considering the fact that your intellect remains to be multitasking. And in addition no longer simply the supervillain, the digital overload, but digital distraction. What number of persons think like your mind is so distracted and also you cannot center of attention on just one thing anymore? Carry your hand. And this can be a project that takes away out of your capacity to be gift, your capacity to be ready to get things done, your capability to be capable to be lucrative. And i do not simply imply financially rewarding, that is apparent, correct? We are living in an age the place it’s no longer your muscle power, it’s more your mind vigor. It can be no longer your brute strength, it is your mind strength, correct? And so the rapid that you could learn, certainly, the faster which you can earn, but no longer simply financially, in all of the areas your existence, all of the treasures of your life, your well being, relationships, good profession. So what we’re gonna do is this undertaking a play and then we’re gonna begin with this state, this childhood state of curiosity and wonder. And you are gonna meet these, your participants, the people that…You are new neighbors, and i would like you to come to a decision correct now, who’s Batman, who’s Superman and who’s surprise lady. Go.Members: wonder girl . Jim: So who’s Batman? Who’s tremendous okay, Batman, carry your hand. The entire Batmans, raise your hand. Very good. What about Superman? Elevate your hand. And where are marvel ladies? Individuals: Woah. Jim: There you go. Keep in mind, information mixed with emotion becomes a long run memory, correct? And, incidentally, who’s in command of your emotional states? Members: . Jim: i’m. Who’s in control? You are, proper? I don’t forget not too long ago, I received to introduce two of my today’s-day superheroes, it used to be Richard Branson and Stan Lee. No longer Stanley, but Stan Lee? Who’s Stan Lee? Male: marvel Jim: Yeah. The co-creator of Spider-Man, and X-men and Avengers and exceptional 4.And we’ll dinner, I keep in mind asking Stan, I was once like, "I ought to know. You’ve created all these wonderful superheroes, who’s your favorite?" And he appears at me and not using a blink, he is like, "Iron Man." i’m like, "that’s splendid." and then he is like, "Jim, who’s your favorite superhero?" And he had this Spider-Man tie, so I was once like, "Spider-Man." And with no pause, he says, "With quality vigor comes…" members: satisfactory responsibility. Jim: and the way do everyone knows that, correct? It is like in our DNA, correct? So we’re happening this superheroes ride together right here at A-Fest, and i am fascinated with it. I am like, "Man, I grew up with these challenges, and i have, , dyslexia and that i flip matters around in my mind, and a part of my issues developing up." and i flipped it in my intellect I was once like, "you know, with quality vigor comes best responsibility. When you’re able of energy, you’ve got exceptional responsibility to wield that vigor well." And the opposite can be proper, with excellent responsibility comes pleasant power, right? While you take responsibility for whatever, you will have great vigour to what? To vary matters, to transforms matters, to make things higher. And quite a lot of instances…How many entrepreneurs are in the room? Lift your hand. Wow, 80% of the room. Numerous occasions, headquartered on your values, entrepreneurs worth things like freedom. They wanna be ready to do what they want, when they want, at any time when they want, anyplace they want. Carry your hand if that is you? And sometimes it is tough, commonly as entrepreneurs, to get yourself to do the matters that you must do. How many humans have additionally resonate with that, that you just procrastinate? Like, why would you set matters down…Why would you lengthen matters that are foremost, that will help you to arrive your ambitions and you surprise why that is? I would introduce to you, going back to state and process, that those two accessories, it’s most often 80% of it since most persons who procrastinate or they may be in a state of procrastination, that is the sensation, proper? Or they have got a poor process for executing factor, getting things executed. And you are like, "Jim, the place’s this recreation? Why am I standing the whole time?" Does your physiology influence your psychology? Yes or yes? Members: yes. Jim: sure. One of the crucial first-class methods of adjusting your state is with the aid of relocating your body, proper? Considering that as your body moves, your mind grooves. As your body moves, your brain groves. You create more neurogenesis, neuroplasticity. Clearly, you understand what supports it? Novelty. What helps you’re making extra of those connections is novelty and diet, identical to your body, correct? You wanna construct a physical muscle, you provide it what? You’re employed it out, you provide it undertaking, you provide it stimulus, novelty, and you then feed that muscle with vitamin. Equal thing along with your intellectual muscular tissues. And so what I wanna introduce you is ways of coming into these states after which strategies and the breakout that aid you to in particular construct these intellectual muscle groups. So you’ve gotten more mental force, similar to bodily, you wanna be more desirable, you wanna be faster, you wanna be more agile, you might be that mentally additionally. Better, extra agile, and extra focused also.So what we’re gonna do here is speaking about states, what are the best stage states? Male: Peace. Jim: Peace. Superb. What else? Members: . Jim: Love. What else? Contributors: . Jim: Gratitude. What else? Members: . Jim: pleasure, compassion. So what I wanna do, let’s select considered one of them. Don’t forget, we mentioned that in the case of learning matters and getting it into your apprehensive method, knowledge isn’t adequate because everyone knows what to do. Original feel, right? Everyone knows, for essentially the most section, what number of people be aware of what they will have to do to make matters higher however there is a indiscrepancy, however like, in terms of no longer getting matters achieved, proper? And so what i would prefer to offer you is this, is fashioned feel, it’s now not almost always customary observe, right? So how will we get aligned with this? So let’s talk about joy, in deciding upon extra joy within the room and for the duration of the entire event. How do you unfold pleasure? In the event you desired to spread joy correct now in this room, what would your method be? What’s one thing you would do? Male: Be joyful. Individuals: . Jim: Be cheerful. What else? Individuals: . Jim: okay. Massage someone. What else? Participants: . Jim: Hugs, hugs, excellent. Kisses, correct? Excessive fives, proper? Good. So what i want you to do now could be i would like surprise girl to be in cost, k? Wonderer lady, carry your hand marvel girl.Contributors: Woo-hoo. Jim: you’re the CEO of the staff. You’re the CEO of the team and what we’re gonna do is, you are gonna inform and you delegate to Superman and Batman learn how to unfold pleasure across the room they usually’re gonna do it for 30 seconds, all right? We’re gonna put a countdown timer on right here. In a position, go. Know-how combined with emotion becomes a protracted-time period memory, correct? The state that you simply be taught anything and the mood and the feelings that you simply be trained anything in, gets connected to what you wanna be taught. Also, it can be gonna motivate you to use it more usually, in the event you study, seeing that here’s the thing, studying just isn’t a spectator sport. Learning shouldn’t be a spectator sport. I am gonna offer you six keys to learn something faster. That you can write these down.I need you to take into account, BE speedy. BE speedy, six keys to be trained any field or talent faster. Now i would like you to think about, in case you could gain knowledge of any subject or skill rapid, what would it be? Outside of studying methods to be taught in view that that is kind of the that’s….After finding out how to gain knowledge of, what field? What are you interested by? Members: . Jim: Say it out loud. Contributors: Languages. Jim: Languages. Very good. What else? Female: pc Science. Jim: computer Science. Good. What else? Participants: . Jim: good. I imply, so whether it is martial arts or it’s Mandarin, whether or not it is track or advertising, there subjects that we’re eager about, correct? And we live on this proficient economic system and we wanna be trained about matters because talents isn’t most effective power, competencies is profit, correct? And so how do you access these things? So i would like you to take into account, BE quick. And just six rapid guidelines on how to desensitize you, now, each single such a matters, you’re gonna have an understanding of considering the fact that you are studied and me as your superbrain train, if you are going to, I wanna be a private coach to your mind, to your intellect. I wanna make it rapid, sharper. And no longer the whole lot i am gonna say is gonna be anything that’s company new, but when I is also say it an additional method and also you manage your state, for the reason that going back to Stan, once I mentioned accountability, you realize, with satisfactory accountability comes fine vigor, the predominant thing to be liable for is the way you believe.Does that make feel? And who controls how you suppose? How many individuals are feeling beautiful excellent right now? Female: Yeah. Jim: Yeah. And detect that these form of matters is, you already know why? Metaphorically, I look at you extra like, a thermostat than a thermometer. Is there a difference between a thermometer and thermostat? Feminine: yes. Jim: yes or yes? Participants: yes. Jim: A thermometer does what? What does the thermometer do? What’s the operate? Individuals: Takes the temperature. Jim: Yeah, it takes the temp It displays and it reacts to the atmosphere, is that true? It just reacts to the environment. And we’re in many instances, you recognize, we’re thermometers, we react to the weather, if we’re sincere, the financial system to politics, we react to how people deal with us generally, but is there a gap between how anything, anybody stimulates us and how we reply? Do we now have option? Yes or sure? Members: sure. Jim: The change between a thermometer and thermostat though is a thermometer reacts the environment. What’s does the thermostat do though? Female: sets the temperature. Participants: . Jim: Yeah. It regulates, right? It helps manage. It sets a usual or a vision or a purpose. And then what happens to the environment? It raises to be capable to do this. Is there a difference? Sure or yes? Individuals: sure. Jim: And so that’s where we’re going again to responsibility when we’re talking about being dependable, the potential to be capable to reply is the way you suppose about things, and likewise the way you center of attention on things. So the B in BE fast stands for perception, on account that in the event you think which you could or feel you can not, both approach, what? Male: you’re proper. Jim: you’re proper. Who stated that? Male: Henry Ford. Jim: Henry Ford said that, proper? "in the event you feel you could or believe you can’t, either manner, you’re right." Let me show you the perception is, arise real speedy. Get up. You’re like, "Oh, you’re a kind of academics." i’m telling you. It is for your physique. You may have so much intelligence in your body right now, i’m going to prove it to you.Soar up down a bit of bit and make just a little house for the character next to you if that you could. So for those who went like this, you’re ideally not gonna take any one’s eye out or whatever like that. K. Now, stop. Stop bouncing. I really like the vigor although. Discover where your toes are, I need to maintain your ft stationary the complete time. And what i would like you to do is, together with your correct hand, simply factor ahead with your right hand.Your different right hand, sir, sorry. I know. All proper. Ahead along with your right hand, and what i want you to do is with out relocating your ft, simply turn to your proper clockwise, as far as you might go and notice where you’re pointing, as you’re taking your neighbor’s eye out. Become aware of how far that you may go, discover where you are pointing. These specified spot, come back center, now put your fingers down. Now i’m gonna take you by way of a quite rapid visualization activity. So take a deep breath, exhale and shut your eyes. Put your hands via your aspect, out of your pockets through your facet and breathe commonly. And together with your eyes closed, we’re gonna play a recreation. I would like you simply to assume, simply assume that you’re elevating your arm again, but this time think you’re turning twice as far, two instances as some distance. Like you’re getting just right stretch, it can be excellent. Suppose that to your body. And if which you can assume it, just think that you’re imagining it, and however, carry your arm, point ahead and this time…No, no, with your eyes closed.Suppose, simply assume, simply think simply in your mind, see and think your self turning thrice as a ways. Simply consider it for your physique along with your palms by way of your facet. Simply think turning around thrice. And then a different time with a smile on your face pondering what does this have got to do with studying rapid, see and suppose your self turning 4 occasions around in your physique. See and feel your self turning 4 occasions round like your Gumby like are made from rubber. Excellent, high-quality stretch. All proper. Open your eyes. Now, elevate your arm again, point for together with your proper hand. Now, turn to your proper now, so far as you can now go. Wow. Raise your hand or make some noise if you happen to went additional the 2d time. Individuals: Woah. Jim: Have a seat. Have a seat. Now, some of you went additional, some of you went 25% further, some of you went 50% additional.Yes. Raise your hand in case you went additional a 2nd time. Now, here is the magic query, right? That, you understand i am gonna ask you even earlier than I ask it, were you bodily equipped of turning that far the primary time? Participants: sure. Jim: Like no one took a yoga type where my eyes have been closed, correct? You’re bodily competent of it, where was once the block or the difficulty if there was once one? The place was it? Individuals: In my intellect. Jim: on your mind, correct? On your minds. And you’re like, "Jim, I did not have a notion on how some distance I would flip." how many beliefs do you feel we’ve got? Participants: millions. Gazillion. Jim: millions and zillions of beliefs, correct? For the reason that this is what you wanna write down, all behavior is belief driven. All habits is perception what? Contributors: driven. Jim: a few of you went 25%, 50% extra with no something. Recall, the vision was speakme about how it’s no longer working hard but when you’re in a exact state of mind, you might just go extra and it’s effortless. How many people have experienced this state of flow before? That state of go with the flow the place you lose track of time, where your attention is correct there and you’re in the moment. And the level of assignment is quite matching your level of capabilities and you are stretching your self and you’re in that zone, correct? Like, that athletes speak about, that Steven Tyler talks about, in the upward push of Superman and stealing fireplace etc. What number of humans are familiar with Steve’s work? Incidentally, i’m just curious as context. K. So are you able to get into these states? One of the approaches is simply believing which you could when you consider that if you happen to believe that you can, or think you cannot, either way, you’re correct given that all behaviors notion-pushed.Some of you went 25%, 50% or extra. What if you happen to might go 25%, 50% extra in your corporation that effortless? What if you happen to could go 25%, 50% even more for your body or to your relationship? Did you’re employed tougher the second time, while you flip the second time? Sure or no? No. Given that it’s a state, right? So habits, so perception. Let me provide you with an example, i am gonna play this game with you, we’re gonna do this together, collectively. I would like some mic runners here, please. There’s a pair mic runners. How many persons right here, speakme about reminiscence, considering the fact that memory, forgetting is a state. In the case of learning, let me provide you with a distinction right here, plenty of people say, "Oh, i have a foul reminiscence." proper? They may be continuously like, "i’ve reminiscence or i have focal point or I do not have focus or i have creativity. I would not have creativity." i need you to scrap that. Creativity is just not something you’ve, it is some thing you do. Center of attention isn’t something you’ve got center of attention is some thing you do. Vigor shouldn’t be something you will have or would not have, it can be something you do. Memory is just not some thing you could have, it’s some thing you do. And what is the benefit of turning it right into a do as opposed to some thing you will have? What is the benefit? Contributors: you have a manage.Jim: you have got control over it. In view that you might put it into a approach, it becomes a technique, considering the fact that there’s a process for reading faster. There may be a procedure for remembering names. There is a procedure for having center of attention. And it can be a verb, no longer a noun, proper? And so the purpose right here when we’re speaking about this, and memory, for illustration, quite a few individuals consider…Here, let me shake this up a little bit. There is no such factor as a good or dangerous reminiscence. There is no such factor as a good or bad memory, there may be only a educated reminiscence and an untrained reminiscence.Does that make feel? Now, here’s the item, I grew up with these finding out challenges. I had all these difficulties all by means of university, all by way of basic, core tuition, junior excessive, high school, I had all these challenges. On the age of nine, I keep in mind a trainer looking at me considering I wasn’t either sensible sufficient to realise what she was once pronouncing or wasn’t paying awareness. She was once speaking to an additional grownup and he or she said, "that is the boy with a broken brain." I was like, a nine-years-historical, correct? And so these variety of identity disorders, these beliefs, does that make a change? Members: sure. Jim: sure, proper? And a variety of humans believe that they can’t do specified matters, they are able to simply certainly not do not forget names. So I would train them a strategy, but if the notion is not transformed, what occurs? Female: now not just right. Jim: it is not for the reason that it becomes self-enjoyable. I keep in mind going for walks a marathon and getting ready for it, I learn a chapter of one of the crucial books and it used to be on the psychology of running a marathon, proper? The intellectual part. And it stated this verbatim, word for word since i am a reminiscence proficient. It stated, "Your brain is like a supercomputer, and your self-speak is a program it’ll run. So for those who tell your self you’re no longer just right at remembering names, you will now not bear in mind the identify of the following person you meet since you programmed your supercomputer not to." is not that exciting? What I invariably tell persons is that this, you have to monitor your self-speak, screen your self-speak. When you go round tell people, "Oh, i’ve a horrible memory. I am not clever ample. I’m getting too historic." Fill in the clean. First of all, for those who battle on your boundaries, you get to hold them. Does that make feel? A lot of individuals are like, "Oh, i am so forgetful.I’m so busy." Which that whole industry relatively bothers me. Like, the place men and women, "So, yeah. How are you doing? I am simply so crazy. So stress. So busy." It becomes like, a badge of honor that individuals wear always and then what do you begin reinforcing, being busy right? But here, going back to this, your self-talk is the program with the intention to run so you can keep in mind, proper? And stand protect your intellect because your intellect is consistently eavesdropping in your self-talk. Your intellect is consistently eavesdropping to your self-speak.And so going again to this, I wanna play this little sport considering that what number of people here…Your memory isn’t rather as excellent as it was? Carry your hand, truthfully. Now what number of individuals right here…Let’s take numbers. How many cellphone numbers did you employ to understand developing up? What number of mobile numbers? Shout it out. Contributors: . Jim: how many phone numbers whilst you were younger? Individuals: . Jim: All of them, proper? Most often. How many mobilephone numbers are you aware proper now? Members: . Jim: One, two, right? And so, how many individuals right here have a quantity you call always however, honestly, should you should not have your mobilephone on or with you or the battery is useless, you actually have no idea that quantity? You name it each day virtually or textual content it or anything. And so, the task right here is that this, the 2 supervillains that we’re speakme about, it is digital overload. An excessive amount of understanding, too little time. The quantity of knowledge is doubling at dizzying speed, however how we gain knowledge of it, how we recollect it, has that changed at all? If anything, there is been a decline. The quantity know-how is doubling like this and your finding out advantage in terms of your studying, memory flatline, that hole creates the stress that you simply feel on an ongoing groundwork, right? How do you seize up? How do you keep up? How do you get ahead? You realize, that pace, right, and that acceleration. The opposite factor that I pointed out supervillains, not simply digital overload since we’re talking about then the breakout, is digital distraction, digital distraction, right? What number of humans…I’ll tell you the worst addiction on the grounds that i am gonna speak about this later, the worst dependancy and you are gonna hate me for saying this, the primary hour of the day is touching your mobile. The worst factor you might do, absolutely the worst. How many humans are responsible of doing this though, correct? Given that you might have that dependancy to it. And i’m going to inform you this purpose why you do not wanna do it, i’ll offer you two reasons seeing that i do not wanna speak process an excessive amount of, i’m gonna talk about it extra the next day, is method. The intent why you do not do it is whilst you get up, speakme about brainwave states, we’re speakme about superhero states, your mind cycles by means of different brainwaves.Beta is when you’re most conscious, you are in beta most of you right now. Delta is when you are asleep. With a bit of luck, no one’s in delta proper now. Theta is correct above delta, that’s the state of creativity we pointed out. Like, when you’re in the bathe, proper? You are so at ease, nearly in and out of sleep, you understand, and then you are so ingenious, correct? You’re very encouraged. In between theta and beta, when you are most wide awake is these days called alpha. How many persons are aware of alpha states, right? It can be a state you go in whilst you meditate, states you go into while you do deep respiration, state you are additionally in whilst you watch tv. What number of humans have ever visible a person looking at tv, you are trying to talk to them but they are looking at their favourite show, their physical activities or whatever it is, or might be you are responsible of it too, and, honestly, that character will not be hearing you. You already know that? You’re talking to them but they’re so entrance, right? Tv programming, it can be programming them, they are in such trance, they are in an alpha state. And the alpha state is where your aware intellect is set aside and you are no longer filtering, expertise is coming. And alpha state is a pleasant state to be taught in although, satisfactory state to learn info, first-class state to be equipped to learn foreign languages also, fine states to learn information, like, giving displays and scripts, one of the most methods we work with actors, striking them into an alpha state so they’re on this comfortable state of consciousness the place the aware mind is set aside and knowledge is just flowing in. Like tv, and also you might control these states considering that you have the accountability when you gain knowledge of the procedures at the back of it. And so after we’re coming again to memory, wanna play this rapid sport, I really, provide you with a third villain. I used to be speakme about the first villain, supervillain, we’re speaking about superheroes, your superhero. The supervillains which might be removing out of your pleasure, your productivity, your peace of intellect, digital weigh down, digital distraction. I will add a third one I wasn’t gonna say, digital dementia.Digital dementia and this can be a actual scientific term right now. That is the inspiration that we’re outsourcing our brains to our wise devices, had been so reliant on our smartphones that our smartphones are making us stupid. Does that make sense? Participants: yes. Jim: I mean, it is handy. I do not wanna memorize 500 telephone numbers, right? Nobody needs to do this, but we now have misplaced the capability to memorize one. Like, if I offer you a seven digit quantity now, how difficult? Would it be you find that kind of complex to memorize like a phone number that you just used to do years in the past? Sure or sure? Members: yes. Jim: due to the fact that if I take my arm, I put right into a sling for six months, does it stay the equal?] contributors: No. Jim: Would even develop more desirable? It would what? Participants: . Jim: it would atrophy and develop weaker. Equal thing along with your intellectual muscles, if you are relying in your cellphone to preserve your schedules, your to do’s, so simple…I went out to dinner with 10 men and women recently, there used to be a 10 of us.And three humans on the finish pulled out their telephones to divide the verify, the bill by way of 10, right? And we have now lost that potential to be capable to do particular things. And so that’s what digital dementia is. I used to be speakme to Dr. Daniel Amen, author, change your mind, alternate your existence, correct? Raised $forty million on public broadcast. He used to be saying, "Yeah, digital dementia." Like, "I acquired some thing for you, Jim." he is like, "GPS, counting on GPS, a 3rd get together piece of science to let you know when and where to turn, whilst you on the whole comprehend that or not understand it, is certainly getting…Men and women don’t seem to be going to the doctors to get checked out after they would have memory lapses if they did not see that relying on GPS. Like, they didn’t have the GPS, they would have reminiscence lapses and we go get checked out, and we’re not getting that early detection on it simply since of that.So how do you keep your brain energetic? So wise gadgets would be incredibly handy however they can be crippling additionally. So it could be a balance, yes or yes? Individuals: yes. All proper, so we’ve misplaced the capability to memorize a quantity, but I wanna attempt to memorize a bunch of numbers together today. Let’s attempt to do it. Let’s attempt to reawaken that reminiscence and the whole lot I pointed out, everybody asks like, "Oh, you already know, i’ve one of these horrible reminiscence, are you able to toughen my memory?" When somebody says, "i would like a greater reminiscence. Are you able to aid me with my reminiscence?" For me, it can be equivalent as a memory educate, somebody pronouncing, "Oh, I just desire I was once better at sporting activities."correct? I wanna understand what sports specially so that i will be able to practice it.Considering the fact that there may be specific memory approaches for remembering names or languages or giving speeches with out notes or facts, figures, numbers. But let’s speak about numbers considering it might be a high-quality mental undertaking. Let’s go round and simply carry your hand and let’s supply a bunch quantity one number we create collectively as a bunch for anyone to take a look at to memorize. And notice, what i would like you to do is, I think some of the important things to be equipped to get excellent at is self-awareness. I eventually feel the knowledgeable will not be the character on stage. Who’s the informed? Individuals: i’m. Jim: you might be, correct? You’re the proficient on you. And what I think is, in terms of, I think self-coaching and self-abilities is fairly most of it. You recognize, and so I believe that you can be taught, i know which you could learn better by means of watching at yourself and seeing what works for you. Does that make feel? And so let’s examine how we go about remembering things now.Elevate your hand and simply let’s come up with…Let’s attempt to take into account a string of numbers, possibly 10 or 20 numbers. I’ll do the nice weekend, you could write them down and then…Let’s have a look at if we will memorize them collectively, correct? So raise your hand, let’s do two at a time. So as an alternative of claiming one, seven, to claim 17, after which simply two digit quantity.Feminine: Eighty-eight. Jim: Eighty-eight. So all people writes 88, proper? We at the game here? We’re gonna hold on going till we get to a threshold and we see if we can memorize these numbers. Yes. Female: Fifty 4. Jim: Fifty-four. I’m going to repeat it so you guys hear it additionally as good? Fifty-4. Female: Thirty five. Jim: Thirty 5. Excellent. Thirty-5. Female: Twenty-one. Jim: Twenty…I am sorry? Feminine: Twenty-one. Jim: Twenty-one. If we’re having difficulty coming up with numbers, I ought to take this in a completely extraordinary direction. Male: Ninety-9. Jim: What’s that? Male: Ninety-9. Jim: Ninety-9. Bingo. Ninety 9. Female: Thirty-seven. Jim: by the way, how many have we had so far? Single digits. Just supply me provide me 10. Does every person have? I wanna ensure we’re all on the identical page right here. All correct. Something over here? Male: Sixty-six. Female: Eleven. Jim: Eleven. Ok. Eleven. Male: Sixty-six. Jim: Sixty six. Eleven and 66. Male: Twenty-three. Jim: raise your hand, sir. Male: Twenty-three. Jim: Twenty-three. Quantity 23. Okay. Speedy. Feminine: 13. Jim: i am sorry. Feminine: thirteen. Jim: thirteen. Feminine: Seventy-seven. Jim: 13. Male: there is plenty of numbers.Jim: what number of? That is numerous numbers, proper? Female: Seventy-seven. Jim: maintain on. Maintain on one 2d. So it can be thirteen, let’s count 13 after that also as well. What’s that? Female: Seventy-seven. Jim: Seventy-seven. What number of numbers is that, by the way? Contributors: Twenty. Jim: Twenty? We’re doing beautiful just right. How many do you recollect to this point do you believe? Let’s do a number of more. Let’s do a couple of more for the heck of it. Go forward. Feminine: Thirty-nine. Jim: i’m sorry. Female: Thirty-nine. Jim: Thirty-eight or 39? Individuals: . Jim: Let’s go together with 39, 39. And earlier than that was seventy seven, is that genuine? Participants: sure. Jim: excellent. We’re on the same page. Thirty-nine. Let’s do a couple extra. Yeah, right here. Male: Forty-two. Jim: Forty-two. Just right, forty two. Let’s do, like, three more. Male: Zero 6. Jim: Zero 6. Zero 6. Bought two extra fast. Female: thirteen. Jim: 13. Did we do thirteen already? Contributors: yes. Jim: that is k. Let’s do it again. Let’s do it again. 13 is pleasant. After which last one. Female: Forty-two. Male: Sixty-seven.Jim: Forty two. Again, 42, very inventive. Ok. Now, i would like you to do this, close your eyes and simply write down as many as you bear in mind proper now. The final one is 42, right? I mean, do not shut your eyes. Shut your paper, after which just write down as many as you take into account. Male: so as? Jim: in order. Yes. Without doubt so as. It’s the only method it sort of works.Members: . Jim: All correct. Let me attempt to do it, ok? Let me attempt to do it with you, and also you guys could check, proper? And i will look right here so you recognize nothing is being broadcast here. All right. I’m going to do the only digits, correct? I need some power right here. Members: Woo-hoo. Jim: k. Eight, eight, five, four…How are we doing to this point? Contributors: Woo-hoo. Jim: Three, 5, two, one….Sure? Nine, nine, one, one, six, six, two, three, one, three, seven, seven…How am I doing? Participants: Woo-hoo. Jim: good. Three, 9, 4, two, zero, six, is that just right so far? Individuals: Woo-hoo. Jim: One, three, four, two. Individuals: Woo-hoo. Jim: Now, i don’t do that to galvanize you, I do that more to precise to what’s feasible.Due to the fact that, like, this recreation that we did when we grew to become like this, let me provide you with, an instance. What did Roger Bannister do in 1954? Contributors: four-minute mile. Jim: The 4-minute mile. For the duration of human history, nobody could run a mile not up to four minutes. Why? Individuals: They failed to believe. Jim: They didn’t consider that they could. Correctly, what used to be the notion back then? Contributors: It was once not possible. Jim: It was once not possible. You could possibly die. The human heart was no longer capable of running a sub-4-minute mile, it could explode for your chest. Now, that used to be the notion. Would that maintain you from strolling a four-minute mile? Like, i am a runner, that will hold me from strolling, interval, proper? And so, it’s fascinating how he simply was capable to do it, is he simply visualized himself crossing the finish line and seeing it says three:fifty nine.Due to the fact that he is aware of what you recognize as superheroes, and he is doing these concept experiments that success is an inside-out game, proper? That so as to take the invisible and make it visible just like a thermostat, correct, you visualize matters right here and then you’re making it out here, he knew what needed to occur right here first, when you consider that all behaviors belief pushed. Now, that wasn’t the fascinating thing to me, identical to when you did the turning activity, that’s what he did, okay, equivalent. The fascinating thing is what happened next couple years. No one would do it for hundreds of thousands of years, one individual does it.What happens? Individuals: all people does it. Jim: Yeah. Dozens of persons started breaking the four-minute a mile. Now, in that yr was our massive developments in shoe science and diet and training methodology? No. What was the alternate? Members: . Jim: a metamorphosis in belief. Like, I bear in mind after I was youngster, I was at a restaurant and we had a waiter go round and take each person’s order, 20 individuals, busy night. Midway by means of, he was once taking my order, i spotted anything funny, he wasn’t writing it down.Have you ever had a waiter or waitress like that? And that i was like, "there is simply no manner." I was very skeptical experience of baggage and be, that is gonna be a disaster. However when he got here back, he got each single factor perfect. The salad dressings, the drinks, how we desired the meal cooked, I mean, the muffins, everything ultimate. Now, is that a standout skill or is that a standout skill? Yes or sure? Participants: sure. Jim: yes. He was like my Roger Bannister. He did anything I not ever inspiration used to be viable and spread out possibility inside my mind.Perceive limits, right? You do not know how a long way you might flip, identical to we talked about…What Vishen was speakme about. And similar to with this, I do this demonstration not to impress you, to precise upon you what is relatively feasible. I grew up with finding out challenges, you recognize, with difficulties. How about this? How many individuals wanna see me memorize this backwards? Recollect it backwards? Individuals: Woo-hoo. Jim: Yeah. That is a lot vigour i’m getting right here. Let me try to get most of this list backwards, all right? No . Surely, let me try this, two, 4…Are we good? I wish to ensure we’re in the correct thing. Three, one, six, zero, two, 4, is that good? Individuals: yes.Jim: nine, three, seven, seven, three, one, three, two, six, six, one, one, nine, nine, one, two, how are we doing? Individuals: . Jim: 5, three, 4, 5, eight, eight. So what if you would get in these type of states and have techniques to be ready to do the things that you want? How rather more productive might you be as a teach, as an knowledgeable, as a speaker, as an entrepreneur, as a father or mother, as a scholar by having these kinds of techniques? What particularly upset me is after I struggled my whole existence with like, my whole childhood life unless I was 18 the place I hit a wall.I actually…When I grew to become a freshman in institution, I was once fortunate to get into, I used to be like, "I wanna make a fresh ." and i used to be like, "i am gonna exhibit my household, I wanna make them proud. I wanna show the sector myself that I was once good adequate and intelligent. I would particularly do this." So I labored relatively difficult and that i did worse. And that i used to be in a position to quit university and i was once living in the library, I wasn’t eating, I wasn’t, you recognize, slumbering, I wasn’t doing anything that was good for me. Nothing in wild match. All the things I must be doing to be, you understand, to construct my superhero force, after which passing out in the library late night. And that i fell down a flight of stairs. I hit my head once more and i woke up in the sanatorium two days later. And at this point, I weighed about 117 kilos. I used to be wasted away. Like, I notion I died and possibly a part of me wished that I had and also, after I bought out, I was once like, "There needs to be something higher for me right here." Like, "What do I do?" And the nurse got here in at that specified moment and introduced a mug of tea. And on the tea was a photo of a genius, a real genius. The opposite of what I felt I was on the time. It was Albert Einstein. And it stated this quote that you’ve all heard in some new release, "The same stage of considering that’s created the situation is not going to remedy the problem. The identical stage of pondering is created the crisis won’t solve the quandary." I used to be thinking, "What’s my crisis? I am a fairly slow learner. How do I suppose in a different way? Probably i will be trained the best way to gain knowledge of." right. And it used to be like, I picked up of direction bullet and looked at classes and so they’re all courses at university on what to be taught, math, history, science, Spanish, proper? All major topics however what to be taught? How many lessons have been on how one can be trained? No classes.I imply, where’s your type on creativity and predicament fixing and thinking, right? Where’s your lessons on studying rapid and having better focal point and awareness or making improvements to your reminiscence? I continually suggestion it will have to were within the fourth R in institution. They teach you three Rs, reading, writing and what? Arithmetic. What about remembering? What about bear in mind? What about retention? Seeing that Socrates says there’s no finding out without remembering. There’s no finding out with out remembering. So B is think, believe you could, consider you could. Now, the E, i’m gonna go via these really quick, is activity, pastime. And what I imply by using that is I mean physical pastime, on account that your mind, the main function of your mind is to control your movement. As your body moves, your brain grooves. Rise up actual rapid. Rise up. Quick, rapid, speedy. Watch this. I need you to try this. I want you to take your right elbow and just put it your left ear. Left what? Knee. Just right. And then your left elbow to your proper knee and vice-versa. Or for those who cannot reach that some distance, just faucet. These are go laterals, right? I need you to do that, take your left hand, and simply massage your right ear lobe. After which your right hand and massage your left ear lobe. And squat down, inhale, exhale, come up. Go down, inhale. Exhale, come up. One more time, inhale, exhale, come up.Shake out your body. All right. Have a seat. They name that super brain Yoga, correct? How many folks are acquainted with education of kinesiology, mind health club, tremendous brain Yoga? So as your physique strikes, your mind grooves, that’s pastime. So if you want to trade your state, exercise and movement is key. I’m gonna go by way of the relaxation rather quick. The F-A-S-T, in the event you wanna gain knowledge of any area or skill faster, the F is to overlook, disregard. And what do I imply with the aid of that? Numerous humans do not be taught faster considering that they consider like, they realize it already.I am going back to chronological age, it can be now not chronological age, it can be really the age of your intellect and your heart. Quite a few humans do not gain knowledge of considering they have not emptied their cup. Does that make experience? That you just hear all these cliches but there is reality in each cliche, that your intellect is like a parachute, it only works when it is what? It is open. So this is newbie’s intellect, right? So that you wanna fail to remember about some thing else than what you’re studying here temporarily. The A in speedy, that is the curiosity stage, right? The A in quick is for lively, active. And the purpose why i have you stand up and shout out and do all these things, will not be for me, trust me, i love, i know the solutions to the most of the questions and everything, is the lively section is finding out shouldn’t be a spectator sport.Learning will not be a spectator recreation. The human brain and the intellect does not study ingesting know-how, it learns by means of creating it. Your intellect would not study situated on consumption, it learns via production or co-construction within the state. Does that make feel? So that you need to be lively, you are taking notes, you ask questions, you do it, you participate in it. How many folks believe what you put in is what you get out? Right. So you are energetic. The S in quick stands for state. So this is emphasizing the state that each one finding out is state elegant. All studying is state stylish. I by no means wanna learn in a bored state, correct? Most people, like, when they learn, they’re in a bored state. What number of people, you learn a web page in a ebook, get to the top and just omit what you just read? And you return and you re-read it, and you still do not know what you simply read. For the reason that you are in that bored state. How many humans use studying as a sedative? Like, you’ve this token book that is been inside your bed for an embarrassingly long period of time, but when your state that you have associated to this recreation referred to as studying is falling asleep or a nil, anything occasions zero is what? Is zero. And persons marvel why they do not take into account what they read. So manipulate your state. In the end, the T in fast and BE speedy stands for teach, coach. I advise that in the course of this complete gathering and beyond, you gain knowledge of with the intention of educating it to somebody else. Does that make feel? In case you had to instruct this to a person whilst you got back dwelling, your workforce, your household, your pals, would you study it in a different way? Sure or sure? Members: sure. Jim: Would your focus be higher? Yes or yes? Would you ask higher questions? Would you are taking higher notes? Right. So you learn with the intention of educating to anyone else, all correct? So B stands for what? Rapid, BE speedy. B stands for suppose, feel that you could, feel you can’t, you are correct. The E stands for what? Exercise, as your physique strikes your brain grooves. The F stands for what? Participants: . Jim: fail to remember. Beginner’s intellect, your mind is sort of a parachute, it most effective works when it can be open. The A stands for what? Individuals: energetic. Jim: lively. Is studying will not be a spectator activity. The S stands for what? Individuals: State. Jim: State. All learning is state stylish. Sooner or later, T is what? Individuals: coach. Jim: train. Given that whilst you instruct anything, you get to study it twice. Let me close with this, this is how i use this as soon as. And so I consider children, going back to childhood, this is you’re the quickest inexperienced persons, right? And also you might access that at any time since you’ve got an interior what? Participants: youngster.Jim: youngster. You do have an interior child. What number of folks feel that they have an inner baby? A little one inside there that may be a genius, that can be taught, that perhaps wants to hear some phrases from you every so typically, correct? And so a few years ago, i’m going to close with this, a couple of years ago, on account that I don’t forget anybody’s name, it result in industry that…What number of men and women feel remembering names is main? On the grounds that in case you forget anybody’s name, what is the communication you are sending them? That they are not what? Important. How are you gonna exhibit an individual you handle their business, their future, their finances, their well being, in the event you do not care adequate to take into account them, correct? And so I don’t forget any individual’s title, it result in this industry for 20th Century Fox, it was for the chairman and that i was coaching him and his executive workforce on a Friday. And i go there, and considering I was in state seeing that I saw this "Avatar," like, memorabilia, and that i noticed this movie poster with "star Wars," I was like a kid, proper? So I gave my fine training ever. And afterwards, they quite felt it. He was once like, gave me a tour of the entire location and everything and that i noticed this movie poster of "Wolverine," this for me is colossal deal, "Wolverine" is popping out, I was once like, "Wow, I can’t wait for that film to come out." And he picks up…The chairman picks up the mobile and 5 minutes later, i’m in the Fox Studios with 3D glasses watching Hugh Jackman combating all these super ninjas, proper? And i am in my bliss on a Friday.Afterwards, he involves me says, "Jim, how is the movie?" I used to be like, "it’s satisfactory. Thank you a lot." I tell him my story, how I grew up with studying disabilities. I taught myself learn how to learn with the aid of studying comedian books, my favorite comedian e-book had been the "X-guys," "Wolverine," and the "X-men." And no longer due to the fact they were strongest, is on account that they didn’t fit in. Considering that I felt like, I didn’t slot in developing up as a kid. Does that make feel with this disability and the boy with the damaged mind? And the highlight of the comedian books for me was once when I read that the institution for the talented, for the superheroes, was once in, for X-men, was once in Westchester, the big apple, and that’s a suburb of New York city, and that is the place I grew up. So once I was nine years historical, I used to ride my bicycle throughout the local trying to find this college given that I desired to run away.I wanted to search out my superpower. Anything that I used to be excellent at and i wanna to find my super pals because when you’re the boy with the broken mind, you don’t connect with quite a lot of folks seeing that you don’t think like you’ve rather a lot to present, proper? So I used to do this. I’m telling him the story, the chairman, he is like, "Jim, i do know that you simply like superheroes. Do you wanna go to comedian Con?" Now, what number of of you might be accustomed to comedian Con? Proper. Tens of 1000’s of people have become collectively in San Diego, dress up like, , superheroes.I am like, "When is it?" He stated, "in these days, Friday, Saturday, Sunday." Now, discover my intellect. I’m going from a 9-year-historical to a 99-yr-old seeing that i’m like, "i’m in LA. How i am I gonna get to San Diego on a Friday, right? There’s gonna be lines and be site visitors, I’ve nothing wear, I’ve all these meetings in LA. And detect, like, the critic that comes in, right? When you consider that generally you must get out of our possess means. And mentally, I just grew to become an ancient character in my intellect. After which he used to be like, "Jim, do you wanna go? I go the following day." And he was once likeOh, I used to be like, "Oh you’re going day after today? I am gonna go together with you." So he picks me up Saturday morning and alternatively of driving down there, we get on his aircraft, and i swear to you, on that aircraft, the whole cast "X-men".And they had been gonna surprise comic Con, proper? With their presence for the brand new film that’s popping out. And i spend the complete…Like, i’m going on there and that i see Wolverine and Patricks, like, you know, Professor X. I’ve noticeable between Jennifer Lawrence and Halle Berry going to comedian Con, proper? And we spend the complete day effective, we come back, here’s the lesson, we come again and chairman was like, "How was once it? I was like, "The first-class day ever. Thank you a lot." he’s like, "you recognize, i’ve something else for you." i’m like, "I do not want something else. What can i do for you?" He was once like, "They quite adored you.How would you like to head to Montreal?" They were filming the final 30 days within the new movie. I am like, "Oh, wow. I on no account been on film, sir. I would really like to loss of life. But what can i do for you?" And he says, "Jim, simply do what you probably did with us. Just share, coach them tips on how to velocity read scripts, memorize their lines rapid, be reward and fascinated by set." and i was once like, "I would entirely do that." Sunday morning, we’re on what they known as the X-Jet, and we’ll Montreal. And i’m brain training these mighty contributors that inspired me, like, growing up, proper? And i acquired to look, like, onset, that was sincerely taking place at the school, and i received to see my real life heroes come to life in front of me as a nine-yr-historic boy. Now, when I bought residence, there was once a bundle ready for my open up. I have no idea if you happen to could put this final slide on, please? I opened it up and there is this photo on the monitor, there is a photograph of me and the entire solid of X-men.And even higher than Halle Berry and Jennifer Lawrence, the whole lot that is on there used to be the notice from the chairman. It said this, "Jim, thank you a lot for sharing your superpowers with all of us. I know you’ve been looking on your superhero school due to the fact you had been a kid, here’s your type picture." The lesson that…Each person will get one-of-a-kind lessons out of this. For me, is me being in that childhood inclined state that allowed something like that to happen. And what i might go away for you is this homework, is it ok, if I give you some homework? Is that this film was once referred to as "Days of Future past," it takes position one day and there is Armageddon. I mean, it is probably the most dreaded future you would ever imagine. And Professor X sends Wolverine, on account that Wolverine has cure potential along with his mind, sends them again in time as, like, the communicator to speak to his younger self. So Professor X sends Wolverine again in time to speak to the more youthful version of Professor X, to tell them something in order that method the future gets converted.Does that make experience? So my question for you is this, in the event you might return to that little one inside you, that more youthful self, and right now tell them something that they have got to hear, what would that be? If you would return and pass on a message to your more youthful self, what wouldn’t it be? And when you were to head at some point, 1 yr, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, ahead someday, I believe you’ve gotten knowledge inside you. I consider you’ve gotten greatness inside you and genius that you’re now not even tapped in these states. For those who were to venture 10 years forward of time and seem again on this present day right now, what’s your present self have got to hear from your future self? I’ve a quote that I get quote on more than something else, it talks about an egg and stress. That your egg is like your existence, that if an egg is damaged by an outside force, lifestyles ends, but when it can be broken via an within force, existence starts offevolved and all first-rate matters commenced on the inside. Thanks very much. .

Thanks very much. .

AYYY it’s Pigeon back at it again with the ooc nonsense. Somehow I managed to get 300+ followers on a blog for a character from a very old famicom game that’s never officially been localised which is just Wild™ to me, but I’ve gotta say it’s been a thrill already. This isn’t my first Fire Emblem character ( yoink, he’s second :T ) but it’s the first time I’ve ever bothered actually engaging with the community a little and I’ve gotta say, I’m super glad I did!! I still haven’t been here that long and I’m still all hearteyes at all of you guys. I’ve been Pokémon-Community-Ride-Or-Die for years but you guys make me so so happy about branching out a little bit; I’ve gotten to meet a lot of really lovely super talented people with incredible ideas and I’m just so glad to have been exposed to so many friendly creative folks.
                                                          Anywho I’m a weenie :T
Onward to the shoutouts!! Even though I love you all, but shoutouts!!
THE GENERAL FAM: @pxgtails @binarycolours @rebursting
Ah yes, pops meema and fish. ‘But they’re not even in the Fire Emblem community’, I hear you say. WELL TOO DIDDLYDARN BAD, I reply, THEY’RE STILL THE FAM RIDE OR DIE. The last couple years+ have been a delight with you three, and you get permanent spots in my heart and on any and all infrequent bias lists I’ll ever make because firstly I Love You and secondly I just feel like I’ve benefitted immensely from knowing you. You guys taught me a lot, you’ve been inspirations, I’ve bounced so many ideas and had so many good times off/with you and I’m always jelly-kneed overjoyed over the moon whenever I think about how lucky I am to be able to call you guys my friends. The Best, all of you ought to follow them regardless of fandom. >:,T
HONESTLY THOUGH I REALLY DOUBT I COULD PUT INTO WORDS JUST HOW IMPORTANT YOU THREE ARE TO ME, I honestly consider you three of my best friends, not just in rp but in my life in general. You three are some of the most creative and fun loving and genuinely delightful people I’ve ever met, and after years of knowing you I still can’t get over how beautifully unbelievably thought out pops’ worldbuilding always is, or how incredibly humour filled and never forced meema’s writing is, or just how entertaining and full of life fish’s characters are and I’m Love Forever
JUGDRAL CREW: @nagablooded @steelsilk @lordofthewindsong @sinisteriisms  @lightbranded @thundergoddessoffreege @princeoflenster @holysight
AYYYYYY LEMME TELL YOU WHEN I MADE A BLOG FOR A GENEALOGY OF THE HOLY WAR CHARACTER I WASN’T EXPECTING ANY OTHER CHARACTERS ( save for maybe a Seliph or something ) FROM THE SAME GAME MUCH LESS AN ENTIRE SUBSET COMMUNITY, BUT LO AND BEHOLD!! THERE YOU GUYS ARE!! You guys are great, the discord server’s wild and I love you all. There’s a special kind of crew-ship that comes from being a bunch of folks playing characters from a lesser recognised part of a bigger franchise amiright. Anywho it’s always a delight talking to you guys, you do you >BV
M’KNIGHT MIMI/NOÉMI: @holysight
does mimi getting her own spot even surprise anyone at this point considering she practically runs my hecking blog and about 50% of all my threads on here and a good 90% of all my memes are with/tagged by her smh
MIMI, THE SIGURD TO MY ARVIS, THE PROTAG TO MY ANTAG, THE CONSTANT VOICE NAGGING IN THE BACKGROUND ALWAYS THREATENING TO BEAT ME UP WHENEVER I SHOW UP IN A GROUP CHAT WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY VOWING TO DEFEND ME FROM THE WORLD SOMEHOW. Oh boy where do I even start. You’re hands down the best buddy I’ve made within this community and I always get this awfully huge grin on my face whenever a message notification pops up in my IMs from you, WHICH IS SOMETHING. I definitely didn’t expect to have gotten to like someone so much in such a brief amount of time in a relatively new community and yet HERE WE ARE, your writing’s beautiful, your characterisation is beautiful, your whole dang blog’s beautiful, your bully face is beautiful, you’re beautiful. Mimi For President Of Pigeon’s Blog 2k17
SURPRISE!!: @desbearer
YOU’RE HERE FOR A VERY SPECIFIC SPECIAL REASON
We’ve never interacted on this blog, we don’t speak super often ooc and we don’t talk on the daily. Why, then, are you on this list? BECAUSE, FUN FACT, WHEN YOU MADE THE TBFLYE GROUP VERSE AND POPS SEIZED ME BY THE ANKLES AND HAD ME ( gladly tbh, it’s always such a thrill ) JUMP IN WITH YURI I SAT THERE THINKING ‘HEY, I OUGHT TO BRING A SECOND CHARACTER INTO THIS FOR A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE BUT IDK, I’D PROBABLY NEED TO MAKE A NEW ONE. WHO’D BE A GOOD CHARACTER TO PLAY THAT’D FIT INTO A MURDERVERSE WELL??’ and BOOM, I wound up making Arvis on a mostly spur of the moment decision thinking it’d be fun to play a villain for once in a murder game setting. The first blogs I interacted with on this blog weren’t even fire emblem blogs, they were from your hecking murderverse, so if it weren’t for you this blog wouldn’t exist at all!! And for that I am immensely grateful
That and also, you know, you’re a phenomenal writer so more people ought to follow you >:T
A COUPLE OF COOL CATS: @murdermage @naglfcr
You two!! We haven’t talked all that much out of character beyond tags yet, but you two are super fun to get to rp with!! RP is a wonderful hobby where people get to express themselves by masquerading as characters they like online and working through scenario exercises throwing them at other characters, but every once in a while you find a single poppy in a field of rye that really just seem to take a character and run with them and make them their own while also totally getting a real handle on the character’s personality so that they seem like they’ve got their minds down pat, and I’m lucky enough to have found a pair of poppies. Henry is such an eccentric character that it always seems like it’s easy to just fly off the handle with him, but you play him in a way that does away with none of his eccentricity without tossing out the fact that his time with the Shepherds is starting to help him grow as a person, and I love that!! And every time you respond with Lyon it’s like I’m talking with Lyon; you’ve got what I think is a perfect take on his character, his psyche and all his hesitation and imperfections, and I adore that. You two keep being gr12 BV
YOWSA ON THAT WORLDBUILDING/CHARACTER FOCUS THOUGH: @i-nsubordination @ofimitations
                                                                      OH BOY
Let it be said now that I l o v e worldbuilding. It’s the best thing ever. I live for it. When a person devotes enough of their time to do real research and/or familiarises themselves intimately enough with a work in media to basically be able to recount it and call specific quotes up from it like it’s a piece of referential academia I weep with joy. When they go further than that to go further than canon and build and develop intimate, detailed facts about not only their character but about the environment surrounding their character I basically backflip over the moon. You two?? You’ve got to be a pair of the most devoted to worldbuilding and character study-ing blogs I’ve ever seen, and I live for it. We don’t even have to interact for me to get excited!! I get more alert whenever I see you guys on the dash, because whether it’s a thread or a headcanon post or just general conjecture pointing something out from canon I know I’m in for a stellar time with you two. You’re both a couple of my all time favourite blogs, not just in Fire Emblem but on tumblr in general. You do some truly beautiful work.
GENERAL LOVE:
There are way too many lovely blogs for me to be able to specifically talk about all of them, so I’ll list a bunch of my favourites off the top of my head!! Even then, I’m probably missing a bajillion because I’ve just come across that many wonderful blogs and people here, which is saying something!! From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for showing any interest in me and for just doing the things that you do. You brighten up every dash you show up on. Onto the list!!

As an American, US grammer pisses me off to. What in particular is bothering you?
Actually I have no problems with US grammar in general. (I’m sorry anon, but it’s not my grammar, and aside from the habit of removing inoffensive letters like ‘u’ from colour, it’s awesome). I mean if you’re raised a USian, it’s a perfectly fine set of grammar rules to follow and that’s the way it should be?
So there’s my short answer :D US grammar gets a thumbs up.
The longer answer is more complex. So that’s being shoved under a cut.
What bothers me is the culturally imperialistic attitudes that US grammar should be applied to english-speaking authors from the UK, Canada, Australia and other english-speaking countries. We all have our own grammar rules, they are also each perfectly fine sets of grammar rules to follow, and each have a lengthy history behind them. Not only that, but it‘s what we see in our published books (US folk may not know this, but books written by US authors are often re-’translated’ into Australian grammar (or UK grammar and so on) before being reprinted here under whichever publisher or imprint handles it - this, the job of localisation, is almost always the job of the in-house editors that a publisher hires), it’s what we see in our newspapers, in our dictionaries and thesaurses, and so on.
The internet clouded that a little, with globalisation you get the callous hammer of cultural imperialism. Suddenly most of the blog posts you’re seeing on the internet are in American English, for example. But that’s cool too, that happens - you’ll get marked down though, if you dare to let that slip into your essays or fictional writing at university or highschool or even primary school; so our localised grammar is very much taught strongly to us. It means that the inherent spellcheck for my browser flags words that I know are correct, like colour, globalisation and localised. I have to jump through some hoops to change that, but as long as it stays away from my word processor, I’m okay with it, lol.
So you have this thing called localisation editing. It is a process of editing something to fit local grammar - because if you open up to global english-language submissions (and most publishers do), you also open up to getting a whole bunch of texts following different (but perfectly sound) grammar rules. Usually you can stipulate a couple of rules yourself - times new font in pt 12, margins of whatever width, paragraph indents and not tabbing. Etc. Simple things that authors just about anywhere can generally follow fairly easily.
Localisation is not an easy process. Think about how long you spend learning the grammar of your country, and then think about how jarring it is sometimes to come across obvious differences. Then think about all the things that are invisible to you because you take them for granted. Think that there are huge, encyclopedic compendiums of grammar rules, that people can go to university and study for three years - just that one set of grammar rules, not for any other country - to become an editor, and still be considered a ‘newbie editor’ because there’s so much to learn and so many ways to apply it to texts.
What bothers me is when US publishers forego paying their editors by asking for authors to do this form of localisation editing labour for them for free. It takes money from people who have trained as editors to know how to do this. It forces authors into an uncomfortable position of trying to apply what they know of another country’s grammar rules to their own grammar - sometimes this is easy, a search replace for colour to color? Sure. But for punctuation, sentence structure, or even word differences, or the commonality of some cursewords over others for example, no. Is it an em-dash here or an en-dash? Is it a quote or a quotation or something else? Is this italics or underlined?
That level of localisation is a job for the professionals. Professional authors are professional authors, but they are not professional editors.
So it bothers me when US publishers in the m/m industry in particular, offload this burden so they don’t need to hire as many editors, and foist it upon authors outside of their country.
Also, generally speaking, I just like writing in the grammar rules I was taught. I enjoy Australian grammar. I’m glad that I know our spoken dialogue in fiction is enclosed in these: ‘ ‘ instead of these “ “ and that the latter will get you marked down for ‘Americanisation.’ (The former will get 15 year old Americans coming into your AO3 comment box to explain how you’re ‘doing it wrong’ because of the ubiquity of US grammar rules lol). As far as I’m concerned, outside of arguments over the Oxford comma (for the record, I’m against, lol, even though I think the memes in favour of it are hilarious), I think they are a logical set of rules that help improve the readability of what I write, and they aren’t impenetrable to people who don’t live in Australia. This is proven by y’know, all the people who read my fics who aren’t in Australia. Which is pretty much almost all of you.
(Hi folks you’re all awesome).
So it’s not really US grammar on its own that’s the problem, on its own it’s just an innocuous set of grammar rules. There’s a great book on the subject of American language by the way, by Bill Bryson, called Made in America: An Informal History of the English Language in the United States which is awesome and very entertaining.
Also, there’s places where I do actually Americanise my writing a little. I use pants instead of trousers - that doesn’t come naturally to me and it jars me every time I do it. I tend to use yard instead of garden, I often use sweater instead of jumper, and I occasionally use trash instead of bin. These things - if I had used them as a kid - would have earned a disapproving glower from any adult nearby along with a sharp ‘you’re not an American, don’t use that language!’ Lol. There’s a few others that are probably so invisible to me now I don’t know what they are anymore. Needless to say were I submit that work to an Australian publisher all that stuff would get corrected back to appropriate Australian grammar.
Anyway, mostly, I find it frustrating that there are publishers in the insular m/m publishing bubble that place the burden of localisation editing on authors (which is inappropriate, and also a very incomplete process, and it shows - it’s why m/m editing often comes under fire; probably because they expect authors who haven’t been trained in formal editing to do so much of it for no compensation, while asking editors to do too much for little pay.) It’s also why a lot of m/m authors are turning to self-publishing. It’s not just me that finds this infuriating; I’m not alone. There’s editors and authors aplenty out there who hate it, and are often outraged to find that this is the way it’s done in this particular genre.
But hey, it’s no skin off my nose, self-publishing is a new and incredible frontier, and I know plenty of Australian editors who can look over my work before I publish it (and US betas who can go ‘um what’s a ute?’ - utility vehicle btw and help out on that side of things).
