I was thinking about Second Life’s 16th birthday celebrations earlier and remembered that some time ago, I was asked to DJ at the event. I screwed up my eyes and squinched my brain and came up with the year – it was SL8B. 8 years ago! And then I remembered, I’m 11 years old in SL terms.

I thought I’d sit in my rocking chair, dole out some Werthers Originals and talk about the old days. Come bask with me in the glory of the golden years.

Back in 2008 when I signed up (actually I also signed up in 2007, but that didn’t work out for me, so we’ll talk about it from 2008 onwards) there were lots and lots of noobs. The CSI thing was current – I never really figured out what that was all about but somehow I ended up getting a CSI avatar and a special viewer of some kind. I didn’t watch CSI. I arrived bald and naked. That wasn’t supposed to happen. I tried flagging people down to ask them how I could put clothes on but there were other noobs who had no idea how to even reply and a few older hub-hangers who were no help at all. It felt like the beginning of a very strange insecurity nightmare.

I fled the area without completing the tutorials, plunging myself further into ignorance and tp’d out to another gathering area. I still have no idea where I was but I sat on a stone bench (luckily a one click job, so I did it by mistake and thought ‘great, at least I’m out of the way) and was approached by a male avatar who was polite, informing me that I was bald, naked and a noob (I had noticed) and he would help me.

Well, that was a huge relief. He took me to one of the giant freebie places and walked me around pointing at boxes, showing me how to get them and open them, patiently explaining every step to me. I was hugely grateful.

However, as time went on (a few days passed with me being his nooby protege) it became obvious that he expected me to be more hugely grateful – I think you know what I’m driving at? It all hit me when he took me to a nice place, dressed in clothes he’d told me to put on, wearing hair he’d told me to get and the place looked all pretty – flower petals, sunset, grecian columns, music playing. He told me to get on a dance ball and we slow danced.

I was being groomed!

After that I began to distance myself a little, I certainly didn’t want to wander blindly into an SL relationship (or SL shagathon, whatever he had in mind). I wanted to see the world!

I began to look for clubs playing the kind of music I might like (there was far too much soft rock for my taste at most of the places I encountered) and on the 6th day, I landed at Alt7 and onto the head of Thom.

Our story is another story, but it was the end of the start and the start of the rest.

Other things I remember about that time include being over-awed when I met avatars who were much older. 2003/2004 avas were the single most impressive thing I think I had ever seen. They told tales of the proper old days, before all the CSI noobs arrived (I went ‘yeah’ and ‘pff’ and never said I had been one, unwittingly).

You could go out dressed in your system clothes (applied to your skin with prims added on for skirts, occasionally sleeves, trouser cuffs etc.) with your hair on and arrive with your hair actually up your butt and your shoes above your head. You could also appear one way on your screen and be either naked or wearing a strange mish-mash of clothing to other people.

SL went ‘down’ regularly, sometimes only for a few hours, occasionally for days and once for more than a week I seem to recall. That was a cause of great distress to me at the time, I was so absolutely and completely addicted.

My avatar at first looked like Dolly Parton and then (when Thom showed me some better shops) it mutated into the lovechild of Gail Tilsley from Coronation Street and E.T.

Still, they were the glory days. The days of yore. I’m glad I was there for them. Things may be so much smoother and more beautiful these days, but back then it was the challenges that made it fun.

Aye kid, you haven’t lived – or have you? Cus let’s face it, most avatars are old avatars now, you seldom see real noobs. Most new avatars seem to be alts. I really wish more noobs would sign-up, I always loved helping them out (and not grooming them for kinky sex).

Aaaaanyway… onwards we trot.

I’m super sorry that some of these pics are at a lower graphics setting than I normally use. Been having SL weirdness all day and my viewer keeps crashing. I tried.

Let’s have a close up of these shoes because I love them. I rarely wear heels when running around the grid, but today I made an exception.
