Books that sell at secondhand bookstores are the valuable ones (Essay)

Nipping Disasters in the Buds
At one time, I was interested in the hippie lifestyle and was working hard to build up that kind of network. I fell in love with a woman I met then, but it broke up, and she chose another man and started a hippie lifestyle in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. She used to work at a publishing company and edited a memorial collection of essays for a fellow hippie who had died at that time.
I also bought a copy of that book, "Dirt on My Feet," but it was a terrible book, just a collection of miscellaneous writings by hippies who admired the man. I wrote her a letter: "This book doesn't deserve to be called a book. I admit that he seems to be a good guy, but it can't be called an objective book unless it can appeal to society about his achievements. What did you learn in the publishing industry?" She was extremely indignant about this letter.
At the very least, "Dirt on My Feet" would not sell for a price at a secondhand bookstore. It has no objectivity or generality. In other words, It’s appropriate that it was published for self-satisfaction, and it would have been good to share it as an internal document among colleagues. Incidentally, I also published a book around that time, and that book, "Nipping Disasters in the Buds" is selling for 30 times its original selling price at second-hand bookstores.

i'm not like. an annotation style elitist. but genuinely the way some of these booktokers annotate their videos confounds me.
you'll see someone with extremely detailed annotations with like 500 sticky tabs in the whole book and it makes you think wow there's so much going on here. and then the annotations are just OMG! and they've highlighted 90% of the book and they've underlined everything. everything they write are just various reactions like omg! cute! wow! i gasped! hot! etc.
it just screams "i want my book to look like a serious reader owns it" but they straight up just don't understand the purpose of annotating. i don't even understand the use case for this type of annotation because like... are you really not going to know it was a cute scene on a reread unless you highlight the entire 5 pages? is this something you need to draw attention to?
it's just like. wild. to see these books with every single free space covered in annotations. the way someone writing a thesis about that book would do. but then you look at the content of the annotations and it is confusingly just someone's immediate reactions to what they've read.
which is like. it's good. that's definitely a part of annotating. but annotation is a tool to understand and analyze a text. and this is not what is going on.
and what is MORE confounding is when people who annotate like this SELL THEIR ANNOTATED BOOKS???? FOR MONEY??? THAT PEOPLE BUY ON PURPOSE????
GIRL LISTEN TO ME YOU DO NOT NEED SOME OTHER RANDOM BITCH SCRIBBLING HER FIRST REACTION ALL OVER A BOOK WHY DO PEOPLE BUY THESE WHAT THE FUCK

I’ve been really nervous about posting this finished painting because it took a very long time to paint - I think getting all those tiny books drawn, painted, lined, and shaded, was a good cumulative 16 hours over about a month? I just wanted to send these Nigel and Antwan here on a lovely date to the kind of enchanted bookshop where every mismatched shelf is packed full of every conceivable book you might be looking for, and there are plenty of quiet corners among the wiggidy-wonky stacks to hide and quietly thumb through a comprehensive guide to local birds, or have a little cuddle with your sweetheart. (The fellas didn’t mind how long this took to paint, because it just meant they got to spend more time on their date.)

fabulously successful quick book shopping trip at the piggery second hand bookstore in whangarei! we were in a hurry so I didn't get to browse through all the sections but I still got a collection of russian plays, the prophet by kahlil gibran, selected verse from baudelaire, some seneca, and a textbook on historical linguistics (of which one of the authors was from the university of waikato, reminding me that sometimes things do actually happen in new zealand). very satisfied!!

| Summer 2023, Valencia, España
Throwback to Summer last year when we found this interesting secondhand bookstore in Valencia, Spain. It's called El Club de Los Libros Libres. The rule is simple, bring as many books you want then exchange for the same amount of "new" books you want. It's a cute idea to recycle and give new life to these old books.
There are multiple languages aside from Spanish and Valencian, such as Italian, German, and French. I found some Russian books too.
If you are in Valencia, perhaps take a quick stop. It's located very close to Platja de la Malva-Rosa.
