I know it won't happen but if we're doing a Missy redemption arc I would love to see Nyssa come back. Or at least mentioned. Because out of ALL the Doctor's companions, the Master probably damaged Nyssa the most. He stole her father's face and used it, the man who murdered Nyssa's father took his very body and every time Nyssa saw him (and he was a pretty major villain in that era from memory) he looked like her dad.
And man if Missy is having a redemption arc which I am all for love me redemption arcs, I would so love what the Master did to Nyssa to be brought up. Because DANG that is lowkey one of the most messed up Doctor Who stories ngl poor Nyssa
#doctor who#the master#second in line for the Most Messed Up by the Master title is Martha btw#second in like for the title is Martha btw#the year that never was sure was SOMETHING#idk i feel like it would be cool to have someone like Martha or nyssa come back#and kinda give proper closure?#interested to see where they will go with it#i watched that era of doctor who when I was like 16#and boy howdey the Master stealing this man's face lowkey messed with me#like dang i love it but Nyssa had a rough go of it#i also cna't remember if the master was responsible for traken's destruction#or if that just happened at the same time as a Really Bad Day for her#it probably was his fault#like it kinda feels like its not the Doctor's place to forgive her?#if that makes sense#she hurt many more people and nyssa or Martha could represent them#HOWEVER it WOULD be cool to have a I'm not forgiven by the ones i hurt but i am forgiven by the one that matters arc#i WILL go very feral for the biblical themes in that#OH MY GOSH i hate how tumblr messes up the tags if you use quotations marks

p,,, p l e a s e ? I mean, please don't feel pressured to tell us about Herc either though!!! but if you want to ramble about her I'll very happily listen,,,,, as a greek mythology buff with fate brain rot your Herc makes me,,,, very happy,,,,, đĽş
HECC YEAH!
Alright, so as a disclaimer, she looks Like That(tm) because Iâve had Heracles as an OC since I was like an 11yo, so LONG before I even knew Fate existed and Iâm not planning on changing the way she looks to look more like FSF/FSN Herc.
I also think that the armor I already have designed on her looks closer to Achilles/Jason/Asclepius/Odysseusâs more mecha-centered looks for Fate Greek Servants.
Next, Iâve established that the reason she is female is two separate reasons, and this has to do with compatibility for Roleplay:
When I did roleplay with others, I just had it set that she was from Musashiâs timeline and she isnât actually the Heracles/Alcides of our timeline.
For my personal writing, itâs like an Artoria situation where history chose to remember her as a man because misogynistic Ancient Greece being like, âwell thereâs no way a woman could be a child of Zeus and this powerful and skilled at being in charge, so you must actually be a manâ.
Second Disclaimer: no one has permission to take my designs and recreate them or use them for RP or fanfics.
SO listed below are the major points about her history in this verse and also how she currently operates as a Servant!!
In her history:
Same song and dance as the beginning where her powers surfaced at a young age, so Chiron found her and took her in to train her to be a hero. However, the change-up here is that Zeus gifted Heracles a portion of his power when she was born because he had the intention of this child being the hero that would guide Greece into a new age as his tickcet for his bet with Hera (this was in the 12 Trials original writing). Basically she never had a choice on whether or not she would be a hero.
When she traveled to Thebes in order to attempt to enter the Thebian Army, a whole situation happened with a coup and an attack with a hydra from Lernaea that got lured to Thebes from a nest by the people doing the coup... It was an entire thing. Heracles defeated the hydra and helped identify the traitor guards, so she was able to prove herself to Queen Eurydice and King Creon, who immediately had her married to their son Megara (below).
(he may have been in line for the Thebian throne and an incredibly skilled warrior, but he was THE Malewife.)
A bit before she moved to Thebes, when she was staying in Athens, Eurystheus met her and fell in love with her, but when she rejected his feelings that was when Hera came to him and âchose him as her championâ so she could start her dirty ass scheme.
Heracles had a happy and loving marriage with Megara and they had one daughter and two sons. She would frequently go out with the Argonauts, but always came home to them as soon as she got back on shore.
When the Hera Snake Shit(tm) happened, Heracles was... broken. After the fact, the shock and grief made her go mad all over again until she dragged herself to Thebes and tried to convince Eurystheus to execute her, but because he was in cahoots with Hera he forced Heracles to the 12 Trials instead to âredeemâ herself... and this shit lasted 12 years, btw. So thatâs 12 years of retraumatizing herself by being forced to do these impossible feats to be forgiven for the murders she was forced by Hera to commit... on top of Hera also sabotaging the Trials wherever she could.
When Heracles completed the initial 10, Eurystheus tricked her into two more, and after completing those two she snapped and nearly killed him, screaming at him to free her. It was then that Eurystheus bitched out and confessed everything to Heracles; Heraâs hatred, her whole plan... all of it. Heracles then stormed her ass out of Mycenae and Thebes and never returned.
She spent the rest of her life until her death by Nessus being cruel, cold, and tyrannical. Heracles had 1 (one) last biological child that she left with a king who would eventually raise that child to found Sparta (Leonidasâs ancestor), but the rest of her very numerous children were all actually orphaned or less fortunate children that she adopted so they could claim the title of âchild of Heraclesâ to help themselves get ahead in life (this is where the Heracleidae came to be). Even so, she usually left them on their own and didnât open herself to them as a mother-figure.
Her life as a Servant:
She may have manifested as an Avenger class, but this is because of Megara becoming a part of her soul and manifesting with her as the manifestation of her hatred for the gods; heâs made the active choice to turn himself into the arrow meant to kill Hera.
If it werenât for Megara bonding with her Spirit Core, Heracles would qualify for Grand Berserker class. Because of this, Heracles still has a Madness Enhancement factor that will kick in when she encounters a god. Very similar to when Penthisilea goes buckwild at the mention of Achilles, except it only activates and makes her black out when she is face-to-face with and aware that someone is a god.
Despite being an Avenger, she has an incredibly sweet disposition, especially towards kids. A habit from her life that stuck with her as a Servant is that if she sees a child (Heroic Spirit or not) who has no parents or awful parents, she WILL adopt them and start calling them her child, and no, not in the creepy weird m*mmy k*nk way, foh. In some cases, sheâll just adopt someone because they look like they could be her child. One fucking hilarious instance of this is that she has adopted Archer Emiya even though he gripes all the time that they look the same age physically. Does she care?? NO, thatâs her son, babey!
Her Noble Phantasms are the almost the same as FSF Archer Alcides, especially Reincarnation Pandora and Kingâs Order... and Reincarnation Pandora is actually the reason why she would up contracting with Goetia. But she also has the manifestation of all 12 Trials, albeit in a different form than what Archer Alcides can bring them forth as, and this is because by some handiwork by Daedalus, Heracles can alter the Kingâs Order to adapt to whatever situation she needs them for.
ex: Cerberus can become a motorcycle aside from also being a three headed hellhound and the famous Lernian Hydra can turn into a Mercedes Benz aside from also being the fuck-off giant Kinghidorah.
Daedalus messing with Heraclesâs Noble Phantasms is the most shown in her (Daedalus is a woman in this verse bc fuk u) alteration of Nine Lives to be a multi-adaptable weapon with nine different functionalities that Heracles can flip them to at a momentâs notice. These alternate forms include: bow, twin swords, double-ended spear, polearm, long barreled rifle, twin short arms, bludgeon, battering ram, and can even conform to the braces on her arms and become gauntlets (yes, her and Ruler Martha would vibe).
(I realize that this isnât the best design, Iâm still working on drawing weapons)
Oh, I almost forgot about her other non-combatant quirk: she fucking LOVES blond men. If a grown dude is a blond and NOT a Greek-- regardless of anything else about their physical appearance-- it cranks their attractiveness scale up by at least 2 points for her. Goetia, Fionn, Arthur/Artoria, Gawain, Kintoki, Gilgamesh (heâs on thin fuckin ice), Jekyll, Goredolf... none of them are safe.
She also very much loves modern era fashion and dressing up. Heracles quickly befriends a lot of the female Servants/staff and goes on periodic ladies nights out with them.

Could you recommend some adult sff? Love your blog btw!
Thank you!Â
And ok, I could give you better personalized recs if you give me some idea of what youâre looking for or what you like, but Iâm gonna give you some general recommendations. Also I only really feel comfortable recommending books that I have personally read, and there are tons more out there than what I have read. If you want to find more, looking at recent Hugo nominations over the past few years might be helpful. Also one of the reasons why I know anything at all about the SFF world is that Iâve been listening to the Sword and Laser podcast for like, a decade. I never really mention that podcast, but its literally why I started reading at all and also they have a pretty active goodreads group as well.Â
So recommendations:Â
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie:Â
This is one of my favorite books period. This is a far future space opera about an artificial intelligence who used to be a spaceship and now is only one human body, and she is ANGRY ABOUT that. I donât really want to say more than that, but if you like AI shenanigans and being sorta confused as to what is going on the entire time, then this is the book for you! Itâs the first book in a completed trilogy.
The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan:Â
Obviously Iâm gonna recommend the Wheel of Time. This is the first book in a 14 (actually 15) book series and if you need something to do with the next 1-5 years of your life *motions toward EoTW*.Â
So the Eye of the World, I think is uniquely good as a book if you kinda want to get into adult fantasy for a few reasons. For one thing, its kinda considered to be one of those âclassicsâ of the genre but its not too old to be offputting to some readers. Itâs a 30 year old book, so its not reflective of the genre now, but you can definitely see its influence all the place, even outside of just books. The Eye of the World specifically, also goes out of its way to make readers comfortable. It leans heavy on Tolkien references and tropes at first without being a straight up copy of Lord of the Rings like some classic fantasy books are. Its done very purposefully, in my opinion, to make the reader feel like they have some idea of whatâs going on, and the series quickly drops the Tolkien references as soon as its established itself enough.Â
Also the Gandalf parallel for the series is a smol bi lady and there is 24 year old rage healer who wants to fight everyone with her own two fists. So many women to stan.Â
Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey
This is the first book of the Expanse, which is a nearish future space opera that takes place in our solar system. Mars has long ago been colonized and is a completely separate government entity than Earth, and conflict between the two planets has been stirring. The Asteroid Belt has also been colonized and have long been little more than tools of corporations that run their colonies. A group of ice haulers working in the outer planets get in the middle of one of the biggest secrets in the solar system and find themselves in all kinds of trouble.Â
I donât really want to say more than this, but this is probably the only SF series that I actively keep up on when a new book comes out. There are 8 books our currently, and the 9th and final book will be out sometime in the near future. There are also several short stories and novellas set in the world, and thereâs a TV show that I really like though I need to catch up on it.Â
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
Hello, this book comes with content warnings for literally everything, but it is such a good book/trilogy. This is book about a woman trying to find her daughter again in the middle of the apocalypse. Definitely a heavy read but absolutely brilliant. The world has a magic system based on geology and the people that can use that magic....saying theyâre discriminated against is an understatement. I donât want to say much more about it, but if you have any kind of content you canât read for whatever reason, Iâd check before picking this up. This is the first book in a completed trilogy
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
So this isnât really super SF heavy and is actually sold as a literary book, but it takes place after a flu pandemic has wiped out a large portion of the population...so maybe this is a bad time to read this book, OR its the best time to read it. Depends on how youâre dealing with *motions at the world*
The book flashes back to before and during the pandemic a lot, but is largely about artâs importance and is actually quite optimistic in its messaging, and this is another of my favorite books ever. But yeah, might be a bad time for you to read it of you canât deal with the content now.Â
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha ShannonÂ
I just remembered that this book also has a plague, but its a subplot and not the major thing. So this is a big olâ chonky standalone book that is high fantasy, deals with multiple cultures having to interact and work together, and has dragons. Also thereâs a genunine slow burn f/f romance and *chefâs kiss*. I canât really say much else, mostly because I struggle to explain this book, but its very good and probably my favorite book from last year.Â
The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette KowalÂ
In this house we stan Mary Robinette Kowal, ok?Â
So this is a science fiction that is more an alternate history that poses the question, hey, what would have happened if an asteroid slammed into the east coast in 1952 and the world had to scramble to colonize Mars so that everyone didnât die on earth when the climate got catastrophic, because thatâs the inciting action of the book. The main character is a Jewish woman who was a WASP pilot in WW2 and is a computer for the space program when all this happens. The book deals with sexism, and racism, and xenophobia, and all the social issues that are gonna come up with it being set in 1952, but Mary Robinette doesnât flinch away from addressing social issues in any of her books, even when it makes her main characters look bad. (Also if you like Pride and Prejudice, she has a series that is just Pride and Prejudice with magic and like, yeah, its good).Â
A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
This is a book which poses a question, what if dragons were like weird animals that were real and an eccentric woman spent her entire life traveling the world to study them and then told the stories of that in her memoirs when she was too old to care about the consequences of publishing all her scandals. Thatâs what the book is about. This one is probably actually the weakest in the series, just because it deals with so much set up. Itâs a great series to get on audio because Kate Reading is a fantastic narrator, and the prose works so well as audio, because itâs just someone telling you her life story. There are five books in the series.Â
All Systems Red by Martha Wells
So this is a novella and is the first in the murderbot series. Basically a killer robot gets addicted to television shows and accidentally became sentient. I havenât read the others in the series, but I really need to reread this one and get to the others.Â
Jade City by Fonda Lee
This is a fantasy set in world sorta inspired by the early 1900s but is in a fantasy world. Itâs like a mafia movie and kung fu movie had a baby and it was this book. The sequel is out currently, but the third book is set to release next year.
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers SolomonÂ
This is another heavy read. This is a SF story set on a generation ship that has a society very heavily inspired by the antebellum south. Thereâs class issues, race issues, gender issues, mental health issues. All kinds of things intersecting here. Its fantastic, but a heavy read.
Assassinâs Apprentice by Robin Hobb
This is another fantasy classic, and is the first of the Farseer Trilogy. The title is sort of also a description of the book, so like. Iâm not sure what else I can say. I havenât read further into the series, but people I trust love it, and honestly I need to reread this and read more of the books.Â
Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
So if you think that Station Eleven might be a bad book to read at the time, then this is THE WORST POSSIBLE BOOK TO READ RIGHT NOW. Or, maybe the best. Depends on how you cope. This is a book about time travelers based in Oxford and the main character accidentally gets stranded in the past right as the Black Plague is about to hit. And it hits. The book is horrific. The second book in the series is much funnier. This one ainât funny, but is good. Just, oof.Â
Mistborn or Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
So if you want to get into the Cosmere, which is a series of series that interconnect and will ruin your life, then then my personal opinion is to either start with Mistborn or Warbreaker. People might not agree with me, but thatâs my personal opinion.Â
Warbreaker is currently a standalone (a sequel will come out eventually but its not set up for a sequel so you can 100% read it as a standalone). The magic in this world is based on colors, and the story revolves around two sisters. One of them is betrothed to the horrific God King of their neighboring kingdom. The other sister ends up being sent in her place because their dad hates her. I adore Warbreaker so much. It has it all. Two women discovering their true places on the prep/goth spectrum. Talking swords. Vivenna. Everything you can need right there.Â
Mistborn is a trilogy that is very emo and will ruin you. Its about people who swallow metal to get magic powers and live in world where the dark lord won already, so theyâre all emo. And that was the worst description of Mistborn I ever could have written, but I find it too funny to change.Â
So if youâre interested in the Cosmere, but are afraid to commit long term, pick up Warbreaker. If you want to get into a series right away, pick up Mistborn.Â

hopes for s13 and brief review of s12?
okok ik s12 just aired but--- hear me out skjskyjs
i really liked this season, wouldn't say i loved it, but still liked it. we got a proper storyline unlike in s11 and some(?) character development, the soundtrack was good - which it also was in s11 - and i loved that they brought the master back.
yet i cant help but be quite annoyed about some things in this season.
the master:
like i said i loved that they brought the master back BUT how can we not have missy mentioned at least once. if this master is an incarnation after missy he for sure would have mentioned her at least once to spite the doctor and hurther even more by her having failed missy or something like that. and if he was an incarnation before missy i'm pretty sure that the doctor would have mentioned her at least once. it just feels like everything that missy hat going for her during s9/10 got thrown out of the window and i highkey do not like that.
i really hope that in s13 we will get some closure on that because i don't really believe we've seen the last of the master yet.
angst? things?
something that bothered me and a lot of others with the doctor in s11 was that it felt like the doctor lacked something the other new who doctors always had and that had just become part of the doctors character over the years.
i'm talking about the darkness, the anger, the sadness.
and i know we got some of that in s12 which i LIVED for btw because i am a huge sucker for angst. but (i'm going to use this word so much in this blog thingy skjs) we never really had an anger moment that made one go "oh damn" like we had with the previous doctors. i mean matt smith had one of those moments in his second episode.remember how he had this cold anger towards amy for pressing the forgot button about the starwhale situation because she didn't want the doctor to have to make a decision - so basically making the decision for him - and how he then screamed at everyone in fury. those are the kinds of moments im talking about and i feel like we haven't had one of those with the thirteenth doctor yet. (i love her anyways because i am basically whipped for her but still)
and i know many, many people like exactly that about her and say that it's refreshing to see a doctor that didn't embody those things and this is obviously just my opinion. i just feel like the doctor isn't really the doctor withthout some characteristics and that's one of them. (maybe its just me growing up with him always being like that that makes me miss it so much now)
and this is definitely not jodies fault because she's a great actress and more than capable of doing a scene like that - she just wasn't given the right material to work with.
the companions:
so this will be quite short because i only have two things to say
1. character development.
it's been two seasons and i'm still not quite sure what kind of people yaz, graham and ryan are and thats just-- not good.
i think they introduced too many characters at the same time and thats why they could barely pull of any character development. would've enjoyed it more if they did something like in s5 where amy travels alone with the doctor for half the season - we get an idea of who she is, ect - and then properly introduced rory.
2. HUGS
where are the good old hugs? thirteen deserves a hug and if she goes of the show without being higged at least twice i will RIOT and steal chris chibnalls identity to rewrite doctor who.
the only hug thirteen got was when she hugged najia khan. yaz' mum. like---
clara oswald would NOT have let this happened
y'all remember when i said i only had like two points about this? i was lying
rule 1
3. death
okay so if there is one hope i have for the next season that i want to happen more than any of the others it's
DO NOT KILL THE FAM OFF
not because i love them so much (i mean i do love them but--)
but because its getting quite boring at this point.
the last three companions have all been (more or less) killed off in some way. amy and rory being taken by the weeping angels and dying of old age, clara being killed by the raven thing, bill being converted into a cyberman.
don't even need a huge donna situation. maybe just have them go on their own, deciding it'd be better to stay home now, like martha did in the end of s3.
that'd be refreshing.
i'm exited for how theyll decide to let the fam go especially since there are rumors that tosin (ryan) and bradley (graham) will be leaving the series.
maybe have ryan realize that all of that traveling is too risky for him after all and that he wants to stay in sheffield and have graham stay with him because he wants to look out for his grandson.
i don't know what to do with yaz tbh because i doubt they'd keep her as a companion for three full seasons with that little character development, ect. maybe have her stay and then go mid-season? idk
regeneration:
i think we all know its coming. the doctor is probably going to regenerate at the end of s13 or around the christmas/new years special. and while i'm not ready to let her go yet because i feel like they could do so much more with her character and i just lover her so much, i don't think they'll make her stay for four seasons. the longest run any doctor had was three seasons so thats why i'm assuming she's going in s13. (i dont fucking want her to go i cant - - - - -)
so if they make her regenerate i hope that they'll do two things:
have her have a memorable speech, doesn't have to be as deep and heart clenching as the one 12 had (i'm still crying about it) but maybe something along the lines of 10 would be nice. but just beacuse i love angst.
the other thing i'm hoping for is that she won't regenerate into a man just yet. not because i want to push some fEmInIsT aGeNdA but because i feel like there are many things that can still be explored with a female doctor - ESPECIALLY HISTORY WISE. yeah we got some of that during the with trials (was that the episodes title? not sure) in season 11 but 1 episode out of 372802275110 (ok i just smashed the numbers on my keyboard but still). have her explore some more of the struggles women in the past had to go and sometimes still go through.
jack:
let me tell y'all something
if they just brought jack back for those 5 minutes in s12 where he didn't even directly interwct with the doc and won't bring him back in s13 i WILL throw hands.
i need a thirteen and jack reunion with jack hugging thirteen tight and lifting her up from the ground and spinning them around while she's still in the air in his arms, grinning like a freaking retard beCAUSE I AM SOFT LIKE THAT
i'll probably do a blog about the things that i really liked about s12, because i feel like it seems like i hated s12 which i really didn't just kinda sad and disappointed (ex. the jack situation) about some things

5 Shows and Some Questions
Rules: Pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions. Donât cheat. Tag 10 (or however many) people.
I was tagged by the magnificent @mrs-storm-andrews, (ă¤Â´âď˝)㤠thank you very much!
BTW some spoilers ahead, you have been warned! I tried to keep them mild but still, be cautious guys
1. Orphan Black 2. Doctor Who 3. The Handmaidâs Tale 4. Mr. Robot 5. Daredevil
Who is your favorite character in 2? I love the Tardis, I hope Sexy counts as a character but if she doesnât then Rose Tyler.
Who is your least favorite character in 1? In the last season I remember how much I hated P.T. Westmoreland and Ferdinand Chevalier, the generic villains basically. Â
What is your favorite episode of 4? I still havenât finished this show but I think my favourite episode was the seventh episode of season 1 titled âeps1.6_v1ew-s0urce.flvâ .I really liked the Shayla flashback in the beginning of that episode, I miss her so much, still it was really sweet. When I finish the series I might pick another episode but weâll have to wait and see.
What is your favorite season of 5? Season 2 aka the Punisher and Elektra extravaganza
Who is your favorite couple in 3? June and Nick
Who is your favorite couple in 2? Amy and Rory
What is your favorite episode of 1?Apparently I have a thing for the seventh episode of the first season of a show cause here we also have ep7 s1Â "Parts Developed in an Unusual Manner", I just miss Paul so much
What is your favorite episode of 5? Finally breaking the curse, my fave episode is the sixth of the second season which is called âRegrets Only â. What can I say, I really love the team up between Matt and Elektra so f-ing much #OTPgoals
What is your favorite season of 2? (Iâll cheat here âcause I donât want to pick just one)Â Iâm talking new who so I really like series 1 (Nine was a cutie pie), 4 (the mega team up with the companions?Martha,Donna and Rose in the same finale?? absolutely epic!) and 5 (Eleven and Amy had some mad chemistry and Rory was so relatable)
How long have you watched 1? I binge watched the first 3 seasons in 2015 I think and then I watched each season as it aired(not really but at least I tried to watch them as soon as I could, I usually waited for the whole season to air and binge watched it but not always, the last season was hell for me, because I was so invested and I couldnât wait, but still it was worth it)Â
How did you become interested in 3? One of my teacherâs recommended the book and I read it in one night, the next thing I knew I wanted more so I binge watched the first 2 seasons (I think there were only two at the time)
Who is your favorite actor in 4? I love Rami Malek so much
Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? All of them are special and important to me,donât make me pick, 1 was the first show I watched because tumblr wouldnât shut up about it and I was so happy to be a part of the fandom(I was a fan all of my teenage life), 2 is a show I love to watch with my dad(and mom sometimes, she falls asleep halfway through almost everytime, but David Tennantâs Ten was her fave Doctor, so I guess she wasnât so sleepy when he was on screen) and 5 is a show I watched with my mom and I really loved the mystery kinda vibe it gave(Iâm also a Marvel nerd so yeah)
Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3Â 1 because it has more episodes
If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? No one really, these guys are a bit...just no, I wanna be Qwerty if we count a fish as a character(no spoilers please, I donât know if Qwerty is still a part of latter seasons)
Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? Kinda, because the world from The Handmaidâs Tale is fucked up and Mr.Robot wants to help the world in his own way, maybe he could hack Gilead or smth idk man, still it would be cool to watchÂ
Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? I know itâs never gonna work because heâs a nerd and sheâs a diva but Scott and Krystal is what Iâm saying, crack ship baby
Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? I guess 3 is a bit more consistent, but I like 5 with all itâs flaws
Which has better theme music, 2 or 4? I mean 2 has the epic Tardis theme and lots of spacey wacey vibes, but 4 has some cool tunes as well, especially all the amazing songs (Iâm still crying over Pictures of You by the Cure)
I'm tagging : @lostinparisphotography @qira-targaryen @lilacs-with-lavender @darisu-chan @mercia-lachesis @beatriz144 @oldstuffnewstuff @paperinfinities @paulfwesley @jenilyn2000
Yâall feel free to ignore and please consider yourself tagged by me if you like what you see and wanna try it out!
Have a great day/night and stay healthy everyone, love ya!

Please post the cars (band)
Iâm incredibly flattered when people make requests like this! I feel like itâs saying, âYouâre good at finding high-quality pictures that we havenât seen a million times, so please show me something new and special from one of MY favorite bands.â Thatâs very sweet! Iâm honored!
That said, The Cars, I dunno, friend. Iâm not passing any judgements here â most of the people around me describe my musical taste as âkind of annoyingâ and I have to agree LOL â but The Cars are one of the bands that didnât do much for me.Â
Not that I gave them a chance. They featured two of my favorite acts as openers in the early-to-mid 80s â âTil Tuesday and Icehouse â and both times, I went to the shows to see THOSE bands and left immediately after their sets. (Both were awesome, btw.) Who knows? Maybe The Cars would have won me over if Iâd given them a shot. Thatâs on me, for sure.
That said, Ric Ocasek did a couple of things that Iâm NUTS about, both, it happens, in 1982.Â
First, after their highly underrated debut album, Itâs A Condition, Ric brought the San Francisco-based band Romeo Void to Boston to produce an EP called Never Say Never, released January 1982.Â
Youâve surely heard the hit version of the title track, a chart-topping smash with a terrific video and a brash chorus with Deborah Iyallâs incantation, âI might like you better if we slept togetherâŚ.never say neverâ â in other words, âBUT DONâT COUNT ON IT.â LOLÂ
But hereâs the thing. The EP version wasnât the hit! The hit version came from the bandâs second LP, Benefactor, released in August â82, and is defanged from the original, to say the least . Still tough as nails, still with that dissonant post-rock sax stab, but drenched in echo, cussing removed, two and a half minutes shorter, and generally much more mainstream-friendly.Â
I do strongly believe in the convergence of punk and disco, and especially in the early 80s, dance punk was my favorite genre. The hit album version in late â82 was bouncy, but Ricâs earlier EP production was a punch to the face to distract you from the stiletto sliding between your ribs.
Iâve only found a YouTube clip for the entire EP, which is fine by me. Romeo Void is way too frequently remembered as a 2-hit wonder doing dance pop, but this is hard-core post-punk, as brutal and beautiful as anything from Depeche Mode or New Order, the kinds of bands you should be thinking of when you think about Romeo Void, rather than, say, Blondie or Martha And The Motels (both of whom you know I love, but THIS is not THAT.)
I mean LOOK AT THEM.
They werenât just posing. They were playing for keeps â and if you donât think a Monkees shirt is part of a punk band playing for keeps, then you havenât heard The Sex Pistolsâ cover of âIâm Not Your Stepping Stoneâ. Origins matter less than the tale you tell down the road.
(Sorry not to have a better pic, though â the later, cuddlier version of the band is the one that survives.)
The punk community in Boston knew all this, including the bandâs terrific first indie post-punk elpee. The place I found the Never Say Never EP was in a local punk record shop (I lived in Boston in the early-to-mid 80s the first time, and again from 2000-2010), IN THE LOCAL BIN, with a handwritten-note appropriating this album on behalf of Boston post-punk because Bostonâs own Ric Ocasek (by way of Baltimore, Cleveland and Bowling Green), produced it in Boston.
Not just âI might like you better if we slept togetherâ, but âThis is not my idea of a good timeâ, âEnjoy the privilege of earning twice as muchâ, âIâm not sorryâ, âWeâre not safeâ, and twisted tales of predators and louts framing so many other declarations of strength and independence (great quote from Trouser Press: âshe sings not only of situations where love is absent, but also of when it should be absentâ) â no wonder the record business had no idea what to do with Deborah Iyall!Â
But Ric Ocasek did, and he helped make this EP a wall to wall masterpiece.
Put on yer headfonez and TURN THIS UP. Really is phenomenal production.
youtube
As much as The Cars didnât move me that much, Ric Ocasekâs 1982 solo debut, Beatitude, very much DID move me. (It looks like Be-atitude, a reference to the Sermon On The Mount, but it was pronounced Beat-itude, which I thought was AWESOME.)
The versions of the songs on the LP were okay, but where they really shined was the 12âł dance remixes. My favorite of these by far was âConnect Up To Meâ, which was ONLY released as a 12âł dance remix (no conventional 7âł single release), and frankly went nowhere outside Boston. The whole album disappeared, was never released on CD, and this version of the song didnât appear digitally until it was included as part of Cars rarities box set.Â
The album is available on Spotify, though, and lots of it is on YouTube, where I encourage you to dig in. Even though Ric was the primary driving force (albeit far from the ONLY driving force) behind The Cars, there are ways in which this sounds nothing like them. Even moreso on this 12âł single, which has more in common with Gary Numan (WHO HAD A HIT WITH A SONG CALLED âCARSâ) or Kraftwerk (who had a hit with âAUTOBAHNâ) than The Cars.
I played the ever-loving shit out of this thing. This version of "Connect Up With Meâ, along with his work on the Never Say Never EP point to directions I wished Ric would have explored more, but hey, itâs his career, and he did just fine with no help from me beyond the $6 I spent on this single and his share of the concert tickets where I left before he played.
BUT THIS. THIS.

So I ainât saying that Iâll never get around to posting The Cars â Never Say Never, right? LOL â but Iâll say that Iâm WAY overdue posting a couple of my favorite tracks from one of my favorite years, with roots in one of my favorite towns, and Iâm grateful that youâve given me the perfect excuse!
Thanks again for the generosity of spirit in your ask, too! I hope that these tracks are an adequate down payment on returning the favor for now.

WILD ARMS 2 - Golgotha Prison
The name is not subtle, but the reference itself is actually oddly superficial. At the end of the dungeon, Ashley is separated briefly from the party and Lilka and Brad are captured and tied to crosses, evoking the characters Dismus and Gestas, the thieves crucified during the same execution as the biblical christ. There is little reference to that actual narrative however, instead seeming to draw from the fact that the name Golgotha is taken to be an epithet to mean literally âA Place of Skulls,â which seems rather appropriate and obvious for an execution field.
Bookending the start and end of this dungeon, we fight the boss monster, Trask. First in a scripted âlossâ and then in a solo match with Ashleyâs new dark henshin hero form, the âGrotesque Black Knight,â Knightblazer.
âTraskâ is yet another transliteration* issue that comes from the juggling between languages. It actually comes from the Tarrasque, another monster most readily identified from its appearance in the original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, itself originally taken from semi-obscure French myth of Saint Martha of Bethany and the Tarasque of Tarascon.
*(I realize I use this word a lot and it might not be as common use to others.  A âtranslationâ lifts meaning between languages; a âtransliterationâ is to lift written characters between them.  Example: âLeftâ in English translates to 塌[the direction] or ćŽ[what remains] but transliterates to ăŹăă.  Inversely 塌 and ćŽ both translate back to English as âLeftâ but transliterate as âhidariâ and âzanâ respectively; and ăŹăă transliterates back into English as ârefuto.â)
Surprisingly, the Wild Arms 2 design (which would also go on to persist as the core design throughout the rest of the Wild Arms series) is based more on the original myth than the D&D representations tend to be: While the end product looks nothing like the depictions of the Tarasque of myth, it retains the spiked turtle shell, the prominent dual horns, poisonous quality, and fins on its head here account for being âhalf fish.â
Also of note is that the title card identifies it as a âDragonoidâ and it has various metallic and machine-like features. These details are neat because it positions it as being not-quite a dragon, to work around a fact that will pop up much later: That dragons in Filgaia are extinct. And also to play into the fact that Dragons in Wild Arms are semi-mechanical lifeforms.
In any case, our scripted loss to Trask the first time around ends with the team knocked out and imprisoned in what appears to be a disused execution ground and associated holding cells. In our escape we run into monsters fitting the theme, who appear to be natural inhabitants, rather than guards put in place by the Odessa terrorist soldiers who are actually holding us here.
First up is the Wight, a classic undead warrior monster generally taken from D&D, but with a little more behind it than you might expect. The term Wight in English lore actually traces back quite far as an archaic term with little to no real association with monsters. The real intersection with name and subject comes from an early English translation of the Nordic Grettis Saga; In it the zombie-like creatures now better known as Draugr were referred to as apturgangr (lit.âagainwalkerâ) but were translated as Barrow-wight. (lit.â[burial-]mound personâ)
This may seem an odd choice, but the translation came at the hands of the eminent bookman William Morris. I say âbookmanâ because he was not just a prolific author of prose and poetry, but a pioneer of the revival of the British textile and printing industry. He and his wife, Jane Burden, did extensive arts, craft and design work in book and print design, book binding, and wall paper all stemming from the intricate design of modular and tiled printing blocks and stamps. Oh and he translated various works of epic poetry and myth into English, including old Roman epics, French knightly romances, and of course Norse sagas. (all of which he wrote and published what was basically fanfiction of, btw)
His seemingly erroneous âtranslationâ of the Barrow-wight came as an attempt to reflect a comparable agedness to the name: Rather than translating from old Norse into modern English, he chose what he thought a suitable old English equivalent; Barrowâ referring to pre-christian Anglo-Saxon burial mounds, and âWightâ meaning âthingâ or âcreatureâ but often used disparagingly to refer to a person. The nuance there is actually quite clever, as the old Wight referred pretty exclusively to those living, even if it didnât specify by definition, and that uncertainty or contradictory kind of implication uniquely fits a description of the undead.
This term would be picked up by J.R.R. Tolkein for use in Middle-Earth, retaining their lore and function from Norse legend to describe undead warriors. And from there you can follow the usual chain of influence to D&D, where the shortened term Wight really solidified itself as synonymous with the undead, and eventually down to Game of Thrones, where George R.R. Martin cleverly brings the whole thing back around to old risen bodies of northern warriors, not unlike the Draugr of Norse myth.
Anyway in Wild Arms 2 we get some sorta death yeti ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
Next up is the Ghoul, which I think we all know is a pretty generic term in modern parlance, but itâs specific origins date back to pre-Islamic Arabia. It entered into English via translations of the original French translation of 1001 Arabian Nights, where it appears in one story as a monster lurking about the cemetery devouring corpses.
The Ghoul identity as a corpse eater quickly broadened into flesh eaters, and the association with lurking about graves in turn marked them as undead themselves until eventually the term became loosely applied to any variety of undead, including the thrall of vampires, supplanting the flesh of the dead with blood of the living and achieving a truly far removed meaning. Even in modern Arabic the term now broadly applies to any number of fantasy monsters.Â
And so long as weâre dabbling in pop culture transplants; the Arabaian word Ghul is in fact the same used in the name of the Batman villain, Râas al-Ghul, whose name/title has always been erroneously translated as âHead of The Demon.â
I have no idea why itâs a chicken with a mohawk but i love it
And finally the Bone Drake. I donât know that this one actually has any real specific lineage...
âDrakeâ is generally a synonym for dragon, although there is some case of fantasy semantics where different settings will try to define distinct body types of dragons each with their own name, in which case Drakes are often either dragons which simply donât exceed a certain size (generally no bigger than a non-magical animal such as a dog or a horse) or a wingless variation of whatever the settingâs prototypical dragon might be. I donât know for certain, but I think this distinction in modern fantasy started with Tolkienâs wingless fire breathing dragon, Glaurung, and its offspring who were referred to as fire-drakes.
In any case, the specific term âBone Drakeâ Doesnât seem to appear with any visibility prior to Wild Arms 2, which leads me to believe it was just their name for a generic bone dragon-like creature. It does make for an interesting companion, aesthetically, to Trask being here, although there donât seem to be any implications that Trask lives in this dungeon at all. Other than just being an obvious combination of cool fantasy things, it may also be pulled from Dungeon & Dragonsâ Dracolich/Night Dragon; an undead (often skeletal) dragon raised from the dead, often by their own necromantic spells, hence the term âLich.â For whatever reason they are oddly reminiscent of shield crested dinosaurs like the Triceratops or Styracosaurus.
The attack Rhodon Breath doesnât tell me anything either. I think itâs just meant as âRose Breath,â translating the âRhodonâ bit pretty literally, and references the smell of roses being present as a funeral, or else the palor of the faded pink color also called âRose Breath.â There is some apocryphal reference to a Rhodon but of no significance that I can tell.
Clearly the theme here is death and the undead, and with some small stretch on part of the Wight, we could even say skulls all befitting Golgothaâs âPlace of Skullsâ epithet. Itâs a really neat way to build this dungeon, albeit a little on the nose. But I really like the idea that the dungeon appears to be abandoned and now haunted by all these reanimated corpses and bones before the villains arrive to use it for their plans. Oddly there isnât much of a martyrdom theme here, although weâll get plenty of that a little later once we recruit our second magic user, summoner, christ figure, and perfect beautiful boy, Tim Rhymless to the team...
Anyway we get out, we fight Trask for real. Ashley turns into a saturday morning superhero. Trask gets soloâd. And we all just kinda move along without asking too many questions... Although the game dialogue describes this new form as a âgrotesque black knightâ the sprite work, 3D model, and even original character art donât really convey much in the way of âgrotesqueâ but in the context of the tokusatsu, henshin hero elements itâs not too hard to imagine that the design was meant to evoke a similar aesthetic to gruesome suit heroes like Guyver, Kamen Rider Shin, and Devilman. I do love the gill/tendon-like organic vent structure in the pauldrons that stay. And although itâs not visible in any of these images, but the D-Arts model has an exposed segment of vertebrae between the shoulders; that along with the teeth(?)/ribs on the open chest panels really helps bring out more of the âgrotesqueâ quality of the design.
