A Rescue Within a Rescue: The Story of a Dog's Second Chance
In the heart of winter, a shivering and scared dog was found abandoned in the Avalon Dog Park. The dog was a rescue, previously adopted from a shelter with the promise of a forever home, but now left to fend for herself in the cold. But just when all hope seemed lost, a dog lover named Sarah came to her rescue. Sarah, a seasoned dog owner, had always had a soft spot for rescue dogs, and sheâŚ

Crushing an Egg
4k words, FFN AO3
Some description of gore, speculated and ectoplasmic.
Mr. Lancer goes back into the school during a ghost attack to rescue Daniel Fenton after realizing he did not evacuate with the rest of the school
When William Edward Lancer first started teaching at Casper High, he knew there was a risk of danger. Itâs a horrible thing to think about, but there was a very real chance of an intruder, or even one of his students bringing a weapon with the intention to harm others. But never back then, had he thought the risk of harm to his students would be this large.Â
Ever since the ghosts started appearing, the school had been subject to constant attacks. And now, the severity of the attacks had been steadily increasing. At first, it had just been pairs of humanoid ghosts, who were mostly uninterested in harming humans, using the school as their battleground. Then, every once in a while, the occasional low to mid-powered animal ghost would attack. But recently, more and more mid to high-powered animal ghosts had been seen rampaging the halls of Casper High. Trampling anyone in their path and blindly attacking anyone they deemed a threat, obstacle, or annoyance.Â
Two students had already been hospitalized due to injuries received during one of these attacks. There was talk of installing a permanent ghost shield, replacing the temporary one already installed. Although it would use far more power than the school district could ever afford.Â
At the moment, the best they could do was hope for the attacks to stop, and be ready for when they inevitably didnât.
âNow, itâs important to view the story from all angles. Itâs easy to understand the protagonistâs point of view, but what about the antagonist? Now, Nag and Nagaina planned to attack the family for the same reason Rikki destroyed their eggs: fear. Why do you think their actions were viewed as evil, while Rikkiâs actions were viewed as good?âÂ
The class was silent. Some students stared blankly at his face, some out the windows, others at the clock behind him, counting down the minutes til the class ended.Â
Edward sighed. âYou donât have to answer, I just want you all to really think about it.â He waited a couple seconds before moving on. âThis story was written about a hundred years ago, but it can still relate-â He heard a sharp gasp and stopped in the middle of his sentence. Daniel Fenton was frantically scanning the classroom, as if he was searching for danger.
âMr. Fenton, are you alright?â
His head snapped forward, and he visibly forced himself to relax. âYeah, yeah Iâm fine, but I really have to go.â He started anxiously tapping his fingers against his arm. âI, uh, forgot the, the, the book in my locker.âÂ
Edward looked to Danielâs bag, trying to read the text on the book barely poking out. âI thought I saw the textbook on your desk a minute ago?â
Daniel reached over and zipped the bag closed. âYeah, that was the science book. I grabbed the wrong one. They both say Pearson on the front, so I mixed them up. Iâll be quick, like, five minutes tops.â He started tapping his foot and quickly glancing between Edward and the door. Though it was very possible that Daniel had indeed grabbed the wrong book, he doubted it. But there was no use fighting against this. Even if he said no, Daniel would keep pestering him until he inevitably walked out without permission.
Edward sighed and ran his hand down his face before relenting. âAlright, please be quick.â
âI will, thank you.â Daniel grinned sheepishly and grabbed his bag before running out.
Edward scanned the room. It didnât look like much had changed, but he attempted to engage the class anyway. âSo, how does the conflict between the animals in this story mirror the conflicts we see in our modern day human society?â Surprisingly, he saw a hand slowly raise to answer the question.
âYes Kwan?â
The boy looked towards his friend, Dashiel Baxter, as if waiting for something. Mr. Baxter waved his hand in a âgo onâ gesture, and Kwan began to speak. âWell, the snake and the mongoose are at each otherâs throats. The snakes are dangerous to the humans, so the mongoose wants to kill them. But then he kills, uh, breaks the eggs, which havenât done anything wrong. Like, they had potential to be dangerous like the other snakes, but they were completely innocent. So I guess itâs sort of like-â Before he finished his sentence he was cut off by a loud blaring alarm.
âAttention all students and staff, a level 7 animalistic ghost has entered the building. All students and staff are to evacuate immediately.â
The class was panicking. Students were grabbing their bags and crowding to the door, knocking down desks and tables, and pushing others down to get to the front.
Level seven was high. So far, the detection system had only alerted to a few level sevens, all of which were humanoid. A ghost with that much power could easily kill a student. And with it being animalistic, it wouldnât likely think to avoid doing so.
âOkay everybody please line up single file, stay calm, donât push or shove, and stay together.â Edward tried to take control of the situation, but the studentsâ fear far outweighed their reasoning. He followed them out the door, helping up students that had been pushed down, and tried to move to the front of the group. Luckily, his classroom wasnât far from the nearest exit. It wasnât long before they were all safely hidden underneath the bleachers next to the football field, along with several other classes taking refuge there from the danger.
He took a second to catch his breath before counting his students. None of them were absent that day, so he shouldnât have been missing any. He counted one short. He recounted and got the same result. He went down the list alphabetically and stopped once he got to the Fs.
âWhereâs Daniel?â
The class fell silent. Some students began to search nearby crowds for their classmate, and Elena, one of his more observant students, stepped forward. âHe left to get a textbook, remember?â
Edward froze. His head started to heat up and it felt like a rat was frantically trying to claw its way out through his chest. He grabbed his walkie-talkie and brought it up to his mouth. âIâm missing a student, does anyone have Daniel Fenton with their class?â
A couple seconds went by. He didnât move, he didnât breathe, he didnât even think. He just listened and stared back at the school building, as if willing his student to suddenly burst through the doors and run towards them. The shield started to materialize around the building, trapping whatever ghost that was there inside. Every class had already made it out.
The walkie-talkie buzzed to life and emitted the one sentence he was dreading to hear.Â
âNobodyâs seen him.â
His stomach dropped. All of the students knew to stay with a group, any group, when there was an attack. The only reason a student would be completely missing is if they were cornered by the attacker, which could only mean one thing. âGone with the Wind, heâs still in there.â
The Fentons were fast, but even they would need time to gather supplies and get to the location of the attack. And by then it might be too late. Daniel Fenton was not an athletic child, he didnât stand a chance against whatever was in there with him.Â
âStar, youâre in charge. I want you to bring the class over to Mr. Falluca. Tell him the situation and donât let anyone separate from the group. Iâm going back inside.â
Star reached over and grabbed Paulinaâs hand before nodding. âOkay.â
Edward looked towards the school, gathered his breath, and ran. He ignored the confused and concerned shouts of the students and staff, he ignored the burning sensation in his legs, he ignored the fear rising up from the pits of his stomach and the back of his throat. He needed to do this. His student needed him.
He passed through the shield, feeling nothing but a slight buzz as he went through, and threw himself through the doors before stilling and holding his breath. He needed to be smart about this. He couldnât just launch himself into danger, that wouldnât fix anything. He needed to be calm, careful, and quiet.
He slinked through the halls, careful to not make a sound, and searched through every unlocked classroom he walked by. He could hear shrill squealing from every possible direction, but it was the ceiling that shook and shuddered. The ghost was above him.
He hastened his movements, whisper-calling his studentâs name into the doorway of every room, hoping to find him before he himself was discovered. No one answered. He went to the basement floors, raising his voice slightly, and running from room to room. Nothing. Maybe Daniel had found his way out of the building and away from the threat. Maybe he was putting himself in danger for nothing. He grabbed his walkie-talkie and raised it to his mouth once again.Â
âDoes anyone have Daniel Fenton with them?âÂ
He heard loud booms and crashes from above, followed by shouts and animalistic screeching. The shouting sounded human, masculine and young.
The walkie-talkie buzzed. âNone of us have him.â
He knew where Daniel was.
He ran to the stairs and scaled them as fast as he could, not caring whether or not he made noise. If he did, it would certainly be masked by the squeals and screeching of the ghost above him.Â
He tripped halfway up the second flight, but continued scrambling his way up. He couldnât waste any time, his student was in danger.
He made it to the top of the stairs and looked down the hallway. It was completely still, silent. If it werenât for the cracked floor tiles and walls he could almost pretend there hadnât been a ghost here at all. It felt wrong, but he couldnât dwell on that. He had to find his student.Â
He ran into an empty classroom and searched, but found nothing. He peered out the door but saw no sign of the ghost. He ran to search the next classroom, ignoring the trail of glowing green beneath his feet. Empty, just like the last one.Â
What if he was too late? Daniel was by no means a particularly strong or brave child. The boy was terrified of ghosts and would likely be too overwhelmed with fear to try to think of an escape route if cornered.Â
He searched the next classroom, still no sign of the boy. Suddenly the animal ghost burst through the walls of the classroom, barreling towards him and roaring with anger. He scrambled to hide behind one of the tables that had been knocked over and braced for impact, but it never came.Â
He heard an ear-splitting screech of pain followed by a large thud and the scraping of hooves against tile. The scraping gradually faded off and Edward was left alone again.
He took in a deep breath and quickly began to hyperventilate. He could have been killed. God, he nearly was killed. Maybe he was the wrong person to do this. Maybe he should leave and let the Fentons handle this when they arrived. Maybe he should just hide and hope he isnât discovered.
But if he did that, what would happen to Daniel? As a teacher he had two main responsibilities, to educate his students, and to protect them. To protect them even if that meant sacrificing his own life to save theirs.Â
Daniel was his student, and he wasnât going to sit back and let his student die.
Edward stood up and left the classroom to continue his search. He sped from room to room, trying to ignore the furious screeches threatening to split his skull open, trying not to think about what might happen to him if he was caught by the beast emitting them, trying not to think about what would happen if Daniel was caught.
Distressing images flashed through his head. Images of his student, abdomen ripped open and organs spilling out, mouth open, eyes vacant and clouded over. Worse, head crushed underneath hooves, skull fragments and teeth scattered across the floor, a leg detached from the rest of his body, being gnawed on by the beast as if it were a dogâs chew toy. He shook his head and tried to get rid of them, but they refused to leave.Â
Thrown down a flight of stairs, neck broken and skull cracked from the impact. Head bitten off by powerful jaws. Pierced through the stomach and left to slowly bleed out. Eaten alive, still thrashing and screaming, begging to be let go-Â
He heard the yelling again, Daniel wasnât dead yet. If he followed the sound, he would find Daniel. And if he found Daniel, heâd be able to help him escape. He ran down the stairs and sprinted to the west side of the school, the shouts growing louder and louder, and the inhuman screeching growing along with them. He forced himself to ignore the screeches, he needed to protect his student, he couldnât run away from danger this time. But right as he reached the source of the screaming, he froze.Â
The ghost, a ginormous and terrifying boar with tusks sharp as daggers protruding from its jaws and a single spiral horn erupting from its forehead, and a small body pinned to the wall, pierced through the middle by its horn.
The screams hadnât been coming from his student.
It had been another ghost.
The phantom.
He shouldnât get involved. He should just leave. This was a dangerous situation. He needed to leave and find Daniel. But one glance at the smaller ghostâs eyes and he couldnât. His hands were shaking, his heart was accelerating, his breathing was getting faster and faster. He grabbed the legs of a desk and, with a strength he didnât know he had, struck the boar in the face with it.
The boar screamed and fell to the ground, releasing the boy from its hold. It attempted to stand back up, but Edward struck it again and again. His arms felt like they could fall off, but he continued to strike the boar. His legs felt like they could no longer support his weight, but he continued to strike the boar. He couldnât see, couldnât hear, couldnât think, but he continued to strike the boar. It wasnât until his legs gave out and his arms refused to move the desk again that he realized that the boar wasnât going to get up.
He knelt there, staring at the creature, breathing heavily and trying to understand what had just happened. The horn was broken off of its head and into two pieces, the core of it glowing green and sparking, yet gradually dimming as the seconds passed. The face was caved in, and there was ectoplasm everywhere. Had he really done that? The boar began to melt and bubble away, slowly simmering into nothingness.
âAre you alright?â Edward snapped his head towards the source of the question and winced when his eyes met the large wound in the phantomâs abdomen. It was larger than he had thought and gushing out ectoplasm.
âShouldn't I be asking you that?â Edward replied. âDo you need help? I could get you a first aid kit if youâd like.âÂ
The phantomâs face scrunched up in thought. âWhy are you here? Shouldnât you be outside with everyone else? There was an evacuation, wasn't there?â
Edward jumped as he remembered what he was doing before. âIâm missing a student. He didnât evacuate with all the others and I-â
âDaniel Fenton?â Phantom offered, then flinched slightly, as if he regretted saying anything.
âYes. How did you know?â Edward looked at him curiously.
âI,â Phantom looked around the room, seemingly hesitant to give up the answer. âI helped him get out.â
Edward let out a relieved breath. âSo heâs safe?â
Phantom looked down at his wound and paused before speaking. âYes. heâs safe.â
It felt like a large weight was lifted off his shoulders. His student was alive. He looked back to the wound in Phantomâs abdomen and winced. âIâm going to go find a first aid kit so I can help fix your wounds. Donât move from this spot, Iâll be right back.â
He ran out of the room and down the hall, quickly losing his breath. Now that the threat of imminent danger was gone, it seemed that his limits had been put back in place. He slowed to a halt and leaned against the wall next to him to catch his breath. He would have to walk.
He was almost to the nurseâs office when he began to hear hushed voices.
â...ectoplasmic readingsâŚfaded gradually⌠cut off like usualâŚcould meanâŚnot sureâŚâ
He crept closer to the source of the sound, careful to not be heard, before realizing there was no danger in being observed. He began to walk normally, yet still relatively quietly towards the source of the sound, feeling rather silly for his earlier actions.
The voices soon became clear as he came closer, and before too long, he could see the familiar orange and teal jumpsuits of Jack and Madeline Fenton. â...Knew we should have brought the tracker.â
âThereâs still an ecto-signature in the building. He has to be around here somewhere.â
Edward cleared his throat, causing the other two to jump and face him. âDrs. Fenton, might I ask what exactly you are doing here?â
Jack and Madeline both jumped before turning to face him, Jack looking confused and Madeline with a smile on her face. It was a sweet smile on the surface, he had seen this smile a million times on a million different faces. But rather than feeling warm and inviting like it usually would, it was cold, condescending. He felt insignificant under her gaze. âOh, Mr. Lancer, we were alerted to an attack here. We just wanted to make sure everything was alright.â
Edward steeled himself and forced his emotions to remain hidden from her dissecting gaze. âAnd I do appreciate that. But, I do believe that the attack is over now. Am I correct?â
Her smile strained a bit, but she was quick to cover it up. âYes, that ghost boy must have captured it. And weâll be out of your hair as soon as we have himâ Madeline attempted to step past him, but Edward moved to block her. Edward started to feel his temper slip and by the looks of things, the same could be said for both Jack and Maddie.
Edward crossed his arms and let out a breath to attempt to calm himself down. âI see, and is this ghost boy an immediate threat to the safety and wellbeing of the students?âÂ
âNo, but heâs up to something,â Jack answered with fake enthusiasm. He was grinning from ear to ear, but somehow it seemed more like a baring of teeth. âWe just know it. We need to capture and interrogate him, maybe do a bit of ripping apart if we can, and figure out what heâs up to, right Madds?â
âExactly. Weâre so close to figuring this out, and now we have him cornered. This might be our only chance for months. So if you would please excuse us-â She forcefully pushed Edward out of the way and along with her husband, began to march down the hall towards the room where he had left Phantom in.
âMr. and Mrs. Fenton, I-â
Madeline turned her head to face him, the same perfectly condescending smile on her face. âDoctor Fenton.â She corrected.
âIâll call you whatever I damn well please.â Edward nearly shouted. Every shred of subtlety was stripped from his demeanor. The pair froze in their steps and whipped around to face him. âThe agreement here was that you lend aid when needed. That you help when a ghost attack threatens the lives of our students and staff and leave when the threat has passed. The agreement was not that you use this school as a trap to corner and shoot down children based on a hunch. You have no authority here, the only reason you are able to hunt the ghosts that attack here is because we allow you.â
Madelineâs entire face turned red with fury while Jack stared down to the ground, barely suppressed rage clear on his face. Madeline marched forward towards Edward and spat out her retort like venom on her tongue.
âThe reason we are able to hunt the ghosts who attack here is because we are the world's leading experts in ectoplasmic behaviour, biology, and most importantly for this case, extermination. It is not just a hunch. Youâve seen firsthand what heâs capable of and yet, he still has you fooled. Though with what Iâve seen of your intelligence, that shouldnât come as much of a surprise. That thing is extremely dangerous and could turn on us at any moment. Canât you see, heâs using all of us for his sick-â
âThatâs enough.â Edward cut her off, face deliberately cold and expressionless. He looked down at her with the intent to instill the same feeling of insignificance she had given him.
She stomped her foot, seeming like a stick of dynamite with a fire almost to the base of the fuse. âNo, I donât want to hear any of your-â
âPlease exit the building. If you donât in the next five minutes I will contact the authorities. The same goes for if I see you lurking in the parking lot or circling the building.âÂ
And just like that, the flame sputtered before finally going out. She glared at him with a look that could break the bravest of men, turned around, and marched towards the entrance, followed shortly behind by her husband.
He watched as they passed through the door, entered their abomination of a vehicle, and left before he let out a relieved breath of air. If it were up to him, those two wouldnât be allowed to enter school grounds, ghost attack or not. But now wasnât the time to dwell on that. He continued on his way to the nurseâs office, grabbed a roll of gauze, disinfectant, and whatever else seemed useful, and made his way back to the classroom he left the phantom in.
He just couldnât understand some people. Yes, it was good to be cautious, but never to this extent. To attack a child for a crime you have no proof he will commit, it was the cowardâs way out. There had only been two instances where the phantom had been reported doing anything immoral, and both had been proven to be falsely incriminating. The Fentonâs had even confirmed this, however reluctantly they were to do so. It was extremely unjust, not to mention selfish, to attack Amity Parkâs greatest ghost defence on nothing but baseless accusations and prejudice.
Edward forced himself to calm down. There was no use in getting so upset, especially now that the cause of the frustration had left. He reached the door of the room he had left Phantom in, took a deep breath, and opened it.
Phantom was nowhere to be seen.
He stood there for a minute, frozen, unsure what to do, before calmly looking around the room for the missing ghost. All he found in his search however was a sheet of notebook paper, torn at the edge with just two words written on it.
Thank you.Â
He supposed he should have expected this. After all, he had never heard of anyone before ever getting that close to the phantom without capturing him first. It would make sense that he would flee to take care of his own wounds rather than stay to accept help.Â
He left the medical supplies in the room. Just in case.

[eyes snap open like that of a re-animated bog mummy] in an everybody lives/survives scenario, what do you see each of the choir kids doing in their future? personally i think ocean would fall off her politician schtick and become a personal injury attorney, or something like that where she can use her powers (arguing and getting the last word) for good
OMGGGGG
Ok so what you envision for Ocean totally tracks and I'm adopting that as my personal headcanon cause you are 10000% right
Noel would eventually get out of Taco Bell and go to work in a drag club where he debuts Monique publicly for the first time and then takes her out on the road, sees the world
I think Misha totally has the energy, drive and ambition to become a big shot music producer and would make a beautiful life for himself and for Talya and even living back in Ukraine he'd still keep in contact with everyone back in Canada and hold a special place in his heart for all of them, especially Noel and Ricky
Ricky would share his message with the world by publishing comic books and be highly successful. He would treat those who work for him very well and makes it a point to put people on his team who society doesn't always listen to or promote, people he sees himself in. He travels to conventions and people go absolutely apeshit to see him and hang on his every word at his panels
I can see Penny fighting for guardianship of Ezra once she's of age and taking him and buying a farmhouse out in the middle of nowhere where they start a wildlife preserve in which they rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured animals, giving them the same second chance Penny was given as Jane Doe
In chats I've had with @cyanidearctic we both agree Connie would take over the Blackwood Cafe upon her parents' retirement and value the business and her life as a whole so highly that her love for everything quickly spreads to the customers and before long she's able to expand the business to other locations, extending the reach of her family's long-cherished secret recipes
Thanks as always for the bomb-ass question!!

Episode 47 - Indie
It is cute to see that indie is still friends with all the people he met during his adolescence.
Cough-cough. Unlike certain other people.
His and Kerubim's life stories are in direct opposition. If one of them ever spoke of their childhood, chances are, the other one would be like, "You have no parents? Well MINE was controlling so you have it better, WET-NOSE" or "You had a shit parent? WELL, AT LEAST YOU DIDN'T HAVE HIM DIE IN FRONT OF YOU WHEN YOU WERE 5."
No wonder they hate each other's asses.
Though, it is funny how both of them had fathers who had always acted like no matter what they do, they will never be good enough.
It's a shame we hadn't seen these friends of Lou's during the series. They have nice designs, especially the yellow one.
Not a Jurgen-Crepin food moment, but this might be useful for pinpointing which fruits exist within the setting.
Patafiks is so funny to me, like... Guys there are 5.5 characters in the animated shows who are canonically queer in some way. One of them fucking sucks, one of them dies within the 20 minutes of being introduced, the 0.5 of them is Kerubim Crepin's ambiguous gender dysphoria, the normal two are Simone and Julie, and the last one is a dogboy yandere (who briefly dated("dated") Kerubim Crepin).
We live in a society.
Indie talks about Kerubim the same way I talk about him on this blog. We are so alike...
Insert "this bitch always starting shit" meme here.
Even though Ouginaks and Ecaflips both follow the same god, â albeit his different sides, â this perfectly showcases the difference in ideology that makes them hate one another.
While Ecaflips are all about mysticism, destiny, prophetising, and simply letting the current flow, Ouginaks are all about making their destiny.
Though I will be real, considering the things Ecaflip puts his demigods through, â like the, uh, son leaderboard within his dimension, or his treatment of Kerubim, (and his hatred of women, I guess, since there is no daughter leaderboard?) â as well as the Ecaflip City and its Ecaflip Psychward, I think his two personalities are more alike than we are led to believe.
It's just that the kitty personality has more glitz, and is better at masking being just as sadistic.
This line really puts how long they've known each other into perspective. God.
It also makes me think hard about the tendency of Ankama to not make distinct visual designs for characters aging, â like in Waven. Despite 30 years having passed between season 1 of Wakfu, and the start of Waven, characters like Miranda and Kabrok still look exactly the same.
I had always associated young Kerubim's design with the age range of 19-30 at best, but who's to say he can't, in this episode, be in his 40s-50s? How many years did he and Lou live together for? And how large is the gap of that unaccounted for part of Kerubim's life, the one that he never opens up about, after Lou had left him?
...I think I hauve covid.
Y'know what, I think I will be insane for a minute, and say this:
Joris, Atcham, and Kerubim really are like platonic soulmates. It feels like every single thing in their lives somehow rhymes, â like every single step they took simply brought them close to the inevitable conclusion of being together.
Sure, whatever, just tell me things like "Atcham knew, and worked with Julith, and they had a pretty amicable relationship", "Yeah Kerubim and Indie rescued the Ivory Dofus that would one day lead to Joris's birth, and then would lead to his orphanhood", "Yeah Kerubim has always wanted to be a father, and felt a certain way about kids being orphaned the same way he was", "Yeah Atcham and Kerubim went to the same war where Julith and Jahash fell in love and were probably their seconds-in-command."
Tell me that. Expect me to be normal about it. I promise I won't disappoint you.
Anyway,
I always found it very interesting that, despite becoming the Champion of Bonta, it was not Indie who went to that war, but Kerubim.
Perhaps Indie was long happily retired by that point, â perhaps he veered from adventuring into archaeology, for his museum, â while Kerubim was old, with no friends, and not much to live for anymore.
It probably was a self-destruction thing, in the "Atcham, and The Butcher of Brakmar herself, will be there. I'm so bored, and tired... It will be poetic if I defeat them, or die trying to. Then I'll be a legend. Also, there are a lot of people at wars, maybe one of them will be friendly to me :3" way.
World of Twelve heroes are always doing this shit. đ though considering he can't die, this isn't even suicidal ideation. It's ideation-ideation. God.
Despite everything, Kerubim does care about Indie, a lot. Indie seems to have cared for him too, â but, at times, I really do wonder if Kerubim's feelings for him ran much deeper than Indie's.
Every sign of genuine emotion is laughed at, and a genuine "I had always respected you" gets a downright haunting "yeah, and your taxidermied head will look nice in my museum when you die".
That must hurt, doesn't it?
It's funny, how life works out. Just like Kerubim, he ended up raising his kid in a completely opposite way than how he was raised. And then he dies, and his kid gets taken in by Kerubim, â who has already taken in the child of his another enemy.
...The implications of Lilotte's life make me sad. Unlike Joris, she didn't grow up in a hazardous, infested, hoarding environment. Indie was likely not mentally ill to the shits. Yet Joris's worst nightmare, â his father passing away, and him being forced to fend for himself, â actually happened to her, immediately ripping away the normal, maybe even privileged, life she had. And it just compounds the sense of loss she already had for her birth parents.
Unlike Joris, who grew up wondering vaguely about his birth family, it seems like much more of a sore spot, with her attachment to her bell...
(Off topic but, god, it's so Bonta-core, that the adoptive daughter of a previous champion of Bonta, who had a museum and was rich, ended up on the streets like a stray. I hate that city so much, it's unreal.)
She uses some pretty dark humor to cope with that. I mean, she already lost two families. No way in hell she's losing a third one. Which kinda harkens back to Kerubim's own backstory, and his own loss of the entire Crepin family, save for Atcham.
I think it's cute that, just like him, â she becomes a mother at some point in her life. Maybe it's because she looked up to Kerubim, who had a similar life story to hers, and that inspired her. Maybe it's just something she wanted, even without thinking of Kerubim's own orphan to dad pipeline.
But either way, it's like poetry â it rhymes.

From my personal experience living in Canada and spending time in Russia I wouldn't be too surprised if statistically by volume, owned dogs being kept outdoors in a yard aren't living their most fulfilling lives when compared to an indoor pet dog just because people who lead active lives with their pet dogs are more likely to also have them indoors. and I definitely see how it can be a red flag in certain situations, but in no way are outdoor dogs inherently neglected or mistreated?? Any owner of a northern breed in a snowy climate can attest to dogs loving the cold outdoors and it can be a battle to even get them inside.
I think one should keep in mind that yes LGDs are a thing and many breeds are built for life outside, but realistically i think in this discussion only a very small minority of outdoor dogs here are legitimately working dogs who work. yes watchdogs are technically working, but the sad reality I witness is a lot of people's watchdogs are just spending their lives tethered with very little to do, and their daily lives aren't really comparable to the working LGD or farm/sled dog.
But here's the thing, I think indoor pet dogs statistically aren't all living their best lives either? like I donât think someone whose dog spends 8 hours alone in an apartment has the moral high ground to call out a dog being kept in a yard. and maybe like 15% of dog owners max should be owning dogs to begin with. Just like how children are the expected next step in having a picture perfect Hallmark life I think many people get dogs for similar reasons without actually wanting the lifestyle that dog ownership entails. Just get a stuffed animal if you only care about the optics of a cute dog.
I also think discussions of race and class are being overlooked in some regards. Now this is more from an outsider perspective looking in consuming the American experience secondhand, but I do think that the breeds of dog being kept as outdoor dogs in America (*cough* many bully types) and the people who own them (*cough* many visual minorities or lower income people) don't exist in a vacuum and i think there is some hidden racist and paternalistic elements in the way folks talk about outdoor dogs.
I don't want to compare dogs as equal to children because they are not and their needs are very different, but seeing as how many white middle class people have fully adopted dogs as surrogate replacements for children and of equal emotional status, I'm not surprised racist sentiments about "why/how many/how" poor and people of other cultures or minorities raise their kids will also morph into critiques over their pet care by those who put equal if not more value on dogsâ lives than people.
The white hegemony has shown time and time again to have an extremely paternalistic mindset that the indigenous, people of colour, and the poor just don't know how to look after their dependents and the stateâs favourite solution of course is always punitive measures by means of physical removal or fines instead of material aid and community support.
If an outdoor dog is not living a good life i think itâs always best to first address the issue and try finding solutions if the owner cares, and give them support to succeed, instead of rushing in to shanghai the dog away so you can feel good about yourself for rescuing it and writing up a sob story about its past, nevermind the chances of a second-hand outdoor mutt having a happy ending once it enters the shelter system.
Some people legitimately shouldnât have their dogs for everyone's sake, but i think we as a society are a little too trigger happy to separate dogs from owners and similarly children from parents if their skin is a certain colour or they donât have much money.
Idk dogs are just in such a fascinating position in today's western society? They are pets and they are family. But âpets are a privilegeâ, and family is a right. We fully believe when people say their dog is their fur baby and their entire world, but legally they are property.
But a dog doesn't need to be treated as an anthropomorphized fur baby to live a good well cared for life, and capitalism especially wants us to believe that doing anything short of fur babying our pets is somehow bad.
Then you juxtapose that next to cultures who don't anthropomorphize their dogs to such a degree, whose lives are aesthetically perceived as sub-par from living outside, and there becomes moral outrage even if the dog is living a totally fine life with its needs met. just because it doesn't have unlimited access to the living room couch or your bed. I think the ultimate culmination of this attitude can be seen by folks decrying stuff like the Iditarod as cruel exploitation of dogs all while they spoon feed their french bulldogs recovering from IVDD or airway surgery, disorders that only exist in those dogs because we want the most babyfied looking animal possible.
I really feel like a sizeable group of western middle class pet owners and animal rights people firmly believe that in order to have a good life, an animal needs it's daily nutritional dose of this intangible yet very very specific anthropomorphic, human-grade brand of Loveâ˘. And that by not giving them this human-grade Love⢠then their lives must be awful and neglected.
It's what makes them think all livestock suffers no matter their living conditions because no farmer who Loves⢠their animals would ever slaughter or eat them. And it's what makes a wheezing pug, a fennec fox in an apartment, or a very lame cow strapped into a wheelchair ok. It doesn't matter what the physical quality of life is, I am showering them with Loveâ˘, and thatâs whatâs most important. And any person or culture who doesnât spoil their animals with this specific brand of Love⢠must be evil and uncaring. anyway thatâs my unsolicited two cents.

joey this ask is your excusebto talk about javert and jean i wanna know your headcanons
YAYAYAAY RICE I DIDNT SEE THIS ASK UNTIL JUST NOW BUT YOJRE SO BASED FOR INDULGING ME
So most of my HCs for them align pretty much with brick canon and also a mix of 1978 and 1998 â I would say a sprinkling of the stage musical too, but honestly not really besides some outfits. Big supporter of the Romani Javert headcanon even if itâs not necessarily fully present by the text, but itâs so pervasive in fandom and even in some licensed published works inspired/based on Les Mis that I canât help but just believe it to be true, and depending on the translation you pick up it basically is at this point. Either way it adds interesting layers to how Javert is condemned by society as an individual who is not permitted to participate in society (that being convicts and guards from his perspective)
also If I am permitted to talk about Valvert for a minute Iâm so so so crazy about Madeleine/Montreuil-sur-Mer Era Valvert, idk the power dynamics are sooooo đđđđđ I genuinely think itâs my favourite era to ship them in. I know people prefer post-Seine because itâs the least dubious and also gives people more room to have them shed most of their baggage and be fully and openly in love, but also consider the power dynamicsssss, like thereâs a reason the Punish Me Monsieur le Maire tag exists on AO3 and itâs because Madeleine Era slaps. PLUS it opens the door for more AU stuff where they rescue Cosette together and Javert begrudgingly becomes a second father to her, some of my fave Les Mis fics cover that exact premise in one way or another. Idk I just like when Javert is forced to be a parent and the autism between him and Cosette (or Eponine or Gavroche depending on the AU) syncs up and it works out for him.
Fuck what elseeeee⌠I like seeing AUs where Javert and Valjean are kind of buddy-buddy in Toulon, like obviously not friends but maybe they start to like each other or one of them is protective over the other (usually big olâ Jean le Cric protecting the new guard) â but then some disastrously traumatic event happens that absolutely ruptures any chance of friendship and rather instils a deep, painful memory of one another within them both. Perfecto.
Iâm also CRAZY about any sort of angel/anthro fics, there are a handful. I just like it when fic writers go crazy with all the animal metaphors and just turn them into beast men. Also, another instance of brilliant a/b/o dynamics (without the bits we all know I donât like)
Oh and I just like it in general when Valjean has power over Javert in any situation, knock that copper down a peg >:]] knock⌠kn⌠knock that copper uâ *I am forcibly removed from the post*
#Ask#thank u rice I like rambling#And so we are clear. I do not want to see that man carrying any sort of litter except the kind that goes in the trash#I just wanted to be funny <3333

The Turing Test
Synopsis
The Second World War is drawing to a close. Alan Turing, the code-breaker who has been critical to the allied war effort, is called in to break a mysterious new cypher. It's coming from Germany, and everyone assumes it is German â everyone except Turing's new friend, the Doctor. Indeed it seems the Doctor knows too much about the code and the code-makers â and when people start to die, even Turing wonders if the Doctor is the one to blame.
Graham Greene, novelist and spymaster, has also encountered the Doctor, and thinks he's a rum enough chap, but in a remote African village he has encountered something far stranger.

The Year of Intelligent Tigers
Synopsis
"Doctor!" said Anji. This couldn't be happening, he couldn't just walk out on them! "Look, give them a chance, they're frightened, they're only â"
"Human?" The Doctor took a deep breath, as though to stop himself from saying anything more. "Now, stay!"
The weather is going to hell. The tigers are coming to town. And the Doctor has taken his violin and vanished.
The island world of Hitchemus is home to a colony of musicians and seemingly harmless alien animals. When the storms and the tigers break loose, the Doctor tries to protect the humans â but the humans don't want him. When he ventures into the wilderness in search of the tigers' secrets, Fitz and Anji find themselves on their own, trying to prevent a war.
With both sides eager for blood, and hurricanes on the horizon, the Doctor must decide whether this time he's on the side of the human race.
Propaganda
It's one of the most beautiful books in the EDAs, possibly in all of Doctor Who canon. It's about music. It's about colonialism. It's about animals that look like tigers but aren't, and about how the Doctor looks human, but isn't. It's about music. It's about an entire species' lost heritage, not due to outside intervention but biology and damned bad luck. It's about gay sex. It's about music. (6&7)
The City of the Dead
Synopsis
âNothing can get into the TARDIS,â the Doctor whispered. Then he realised that Nothing had.
New Orleans, the early 21st century. A dealer in morbid artefacts has been murdered. A charm carved from human bone is missing. An old plantation, miles from any water, has been destroyed by a tidal wave.
Anji goes dancing. Fitz goes grave-robbing. The Doctor attracts the interest of a homicide detective and the enmity of a would-be magician. He wants to find out the secret of the redneck thief and his blind wife. He'd like to help the crippled curator of a museum of magic. He's trying to refuse politely the request of a crazy young artist that he pose naked with the man's wife.
Most of all, he needs to figure out what all of them have to do with the Void that is hunting him down.
Before it catches him.
Propaganda
It has dark magic and someone is hunting the Doctor in his dreams. Also great worldbuilding. (anonymous)
The Adventuress of Henrietta Street
Synopsis
On February 9, 1783, a funeral was held in the tunnels at the dead heart of London. It was the funeral of a warrior and a conjurer, a paladin and an oracle, the last of an ancient breed who'd once stood between the Earth and the bloodiest of its nightmares.
Her name was Scarlette. Part courtesan, part sorceress, this is her history: the part she played in the Siege of Henrietta Street, and the sacrifice she made in the defence of her world.
In the year leading up to that funeral, something raw and primal ate its way through human society, from the streets of pre-Revolutionary Paris to the slave-states of America. Something that only the eighteenth century could have summoned, and against which the only line of defence was a bordello in Covent Garden.
And then there was Scarlette's accomplice, the ""elemental champion"" who stood alongside her in the final battle. The one they called the Doctor.

Understanding Zoonotic Diseases: Bridging Human and Animal Health
In recent years, the intersection of human health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability has garnered increasing attention. This convergence highlights the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in various industries, especially in addressing issues related to animals used for research, combating animal cruelty, and promoting health through sustainable practices. As we explore these themes, we will also discuss the rising popularity of veganism in India, particularly as it relates to the understanding and prevention of zoonotic diseases.
The Role of Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate Social Responsibility is more than just a business buzzword; it represents a commitment by companies to contribute positively to society and the environment. In the context of animal welfare, CSR initiatives can take many forms. Companies involved in animal research must ensure that their practices are ethical, humane, and scientifically justified. Transparency in research processes and prioritizing animal welfare are crucial steps in fostering public trust and demonstrating a genuine commitment to ethical standards.
Many organizations are actively working against animal cruelty, advocating for the humane treatment of animals used in research. These initiatives often include funding alternatives to animal testing, such as in vitro methods and computer modeling, which can reduce the reliance on live animals in research. By adopting such strategies, businesses not only fulfill their ethical obligations but also align themselves with consumer values, as more people are becoming aware of animal welfare issues.
The Importance of Supporting Animal Rescue Efforts
In addition to corporate efforts, individual contributions play a vital role in improving the lives of animals. One significant area of focus is the need for donation for dogs in India. With millions of stray dogs facing neglect and abuse, supporting local shelters and rescue organizations is critical. Donations can help provide food, medical care, and shelter for these vulnerable animals, giving them a second chance at life.
If youâre looking to make a difference, consider searching for dog rescue near me to find local organizations where you can volunteer or donate. Many rescue groups operate tirelessly to save abandoned dogs, rehabilitate them, and find them loving homes. Your involvement can create a ripple effect, encouraging others to participate and support the cause.
The Connection Between Veganism and Animal Welfare
Veganism is rapidly gaining traction in India, driven by a growing awareness of animal rights and environmental sustainability. As more individuals adopt plant-based diets, there is a significant reduction in the demand for animal products, which often contributes to animal cruelty in industrial farming and research settings.
Vegan Indian food offers a rich tapestry of flavors and nutrients, making it an appealing choice for those looking to adopt a cruelty-free lifestyle. Dishes such as chana masala, vegetable biryani, and various lentil curries provide protein and essential nutrients while eliminating the ethical concerns associated with animal consumption.
Incorporating veganism into daily life not only benefits animals but also promotes better health outcomes. A plant-based diet is often associated with lower rates of chronic diseases, which can ultimately reduce healthcare costs. By choosing vegan options, individuals contribute to a healthier society while advocating for animal rights.
Understanding Zoonotic Diseases
Zoonotic diseases, those transmitted from animals to humans, are a significant public health concern. With the increasing interactions between humans and wildlife, the risk of zoonotic diseases is heightened. Understanding the relationship between animal health and human health is vital in preventing outbreaks.
Incorporating animal welfare into public health strategies can lead to more effective disease prevention measures. For instance, by ensuring the humane treatment of animals used for research, we can minimize stress and suffering, which are known to influence the transmission of zoonotic diseases. Furthermore, promoting ethical research practices can lead to more accurate and reliable findings, ultimately benefiting both animal and human health.
The Way Forward: Integrating Efforts
To effectively address the challenges posed by zoonotic diseases, it is crucial to adopt a One Health approach, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. This framework encourages collaboration among various sectors, including veterinary medicine, public health, and environmental science, to create comprehensive solutions.
Corporate entities can play a pivotal role in this integration by investing in research that focuses on zoonotic diseases and promoting responsible practices in animal research. Additionally, companies can support community initiatives that aim to improve animal welfare and public health, thereby fulfilling their CSR objectives.
Individuals, too, can contribute by choosing veganism and supporting local animal rescue organizations in India. By donating to shelters and participating in community outreach programs, people can help mitigate the issues surrounding animal cruelty and promote a healthier environment.
Conclusion
The fight against zoonotic diseases, animal cruelty, and the promotion of veganism in India are interconnected challenges that require collective action. By embracing Corporate Social Responsibility, supporting animal rescue efforts, and advocating for plant-based lifestyles, we can foster a more compassionate and sustainable future for all living beings. As we bridge the gap between human and animal health, we pave the way for a healthier, more equitable world.

Pheli Roti Gaaye Ki: Reviving a Timeless Tradition, Nurturing Our Heritage
In our society, cows have always held a revered place, often regarded as âMotherâ due to their nurturing role in providing milk. However, once a cow grows old and stops giving milk, many owners disown them, deeming them useless. As a result, thousands of innocent cows are abandoned on the streets, left without a home. These cows, many of whom are aged, injured, or abandoned, face a harsh reality. They often fall prey to butchers, suffer from severe starvation, and bear the brunt of extreme weather conditions. Tragically, these gentle creatures are insulted, beaten, and even pelted with stones. Some meet with fatal accidents, while others groan in pain from severe injuries, awaiting medical attention. The life of these cows becomes miserable and heart-wrenching.
Should such be the end of cows that have nourished us with milk throughout their lives?
What We Do:
At Shree Krishnayan Gaurakshashala, we believe these cows deserve better. Presently, more than 21,000 destitute cows live happy and peaceful lives at our shelter. We provide these cows not only with a second home but also with a second chance at a happy life. These docile cows, who do not harm anyone, are rescued from dire situations. Many are disabled, deeply injured, and fighting for their lives when they arrive. Our dedicated team of hundreds of gausewaks works around the clock to feed, shelter, and care for them.
These cows are fed a nutritious mixture of fodder, including wheat, mustard cake, green grass, bhusa (husk), and jaggery. They have plenty of water and acres of land to roam freely. A team of expert veterinarians administers quality medical care to ensure their well-being.
Join the Pheli Roti Initiative:
To honor and support these noble creatures, we invite you to participate in our âPheli Rotiâ initiative. This timeless tradition involves offering the first roti you make at home to a cow. It is a simple yet powerful gesture to show gratitude and respect to these animals that have given us so much. By doing so, you are not only nurturing our heritage but also contributing to the well-being of abandoned and destitute cows.
By participating in the Pheli Roti initiative, you become a part of a compassionate community that values and protects our cows. Letâs come together to revive this tradition and ensure that no cow has to suffer or face a cruel end. Join us in giving these gentle beings the love and care they deserve.
Together, Letâs Make a Difference:
Offer your first roti to a cow today and contribute to a happier, kinder world for these sacred animals. Your small act of kindness can make a big difference.

Making a Difference: The Vital Role of Animal Rescue Organizations
Animal rescue organizations play a pivotal role in our communities, serving as beacons of hope for animals in need. These dedicated groups work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals, providing them with a second chance at life and love. From abandoned pets to injured wildlife, these organizations are on the front lines, making a profound impact on the well-being of animals everywhere.
One of the primary functions of animal rescue organizations is to rescue animals from situations of neglect, abuse, or abandonment. Whether it's a stray dog wandering the streets or a kitten left in a cardboard box, these organizations step in to provide immediate care and shelter. They work closely with local authorities and concerned citizens to respond to reports of animal cruelty and provide a safe haven for animals in distress.
Once rescued, animals receive the medical attention they need to address any injuries or illnesses they may have. Veterinary care is a cornerstone of animal rescue organizations, ensuring that each animal receives proper treatment and rehabilitation. Whether it's spaying and neutering, vaccinations, or surgery, these organizations spare no effort to restore the health and well-being of every animal in their care.
Beyond physical health, animal rescue organizations also focus on the emotional and behavioral needs of their animals. Many rescued animals have experienced trauma or neglect, requiring patience, understanding, and rehabilitation to overcome their past experiences. Through enrichment activities, socialization, and training programs, these organizations help animals build trust, confidence, and resilience, preparing them for a smooth transition into their forever homes.
Animal rescue organizations also play a vital role in promoting responsible pet ownership and reducing pet overpopulation. Through adoption events, educational outreach, and spay/neuter initiatives, they work to ensure that every animal finds a loving and permanent home. By encouraging adoption and emphasizing the importance of spaying and neutering, these organizations help reduce the number of animals entering shelters and improve the overall welfare of animals in our communities.
In conclusion, animal rescue organizations are true champions for animals in need, providing them with the care, compassion, and second chances they deserve. Through their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, they make our world a better place for both animals and humans alike. Supporting these organizations through volunteering, donations, or adoption not only saves lives but also helps create a more compassionate and humane society for all.

The Consort's Will - Chapter 8 - Part 2
*Warning Adult Content*
Finn
"Another war has broken out between the vampires and the humans," I whisper, now too terrified to hold his gaze.
"We need your help."
The ringing silence following my words is painful.
Reyo doesn't move.
He doesn't even flinch.
I chance a glance up at him to gauge his reaction.
His eyes collide with mine but his face remains calm as ever.
"Help for what purpose?" he asks quietly.
His words are calculated and I know my response needs to be as well.
During the last war, the Secondary population helped fight alongside the humans.
It's thanks to them we won.
And how were they repaid?
They were shunned from society... until now.
When we once again need their help.
The realization is humiliating.
"For the purpose of peace and freedom," I finally respond.
"For all populations."
The edges of Reyo's lip twitch into the semblance of a grin.
But it vanishes a moment later.
Does that mean my answer was good enough?
As if to humor me, Reyo crosses his arms over his chest and thoughtfully tilts his head to the side.
"And how would you propose we accomplish that?"
I hadn't thought this far ahead.
I've been so focused on trying to find the Secondary population that I hadn't actually thought what would happen if we found them.
How will we win this war?
I grimace and give the best answer I can find in my scattered thoughts.
"By asking for peace. And if the vampires refuse, we fight them until they see reason. Same with the humans."
"So we fight for peace through war?" Reyo questions, gently jabbing my tactical approach.
My shoulders slump and I stare down at my hands again.
He's right.
It's a stupid idea.
So many lives were lost during the first war.
It was such dark times.
But what other way is there?
If we continue to let the vampires push us around, how will ever rescue all the humans under their control?
"You're right," I admit.
"It's stupid."
I can hear the small smile in Reyo's voice when he responds.
"It's not stupid, Finn. Perhaps just a last resort. I appreciate your honesty, though. Our population has been keeping a close eye on yours. We are, after all, descendants of the vampire and humans. Although I can't say I applaud the way my people have been treated the past few centuries, it has given us time to learn. To observe. And to come up with our own solution."
My head snaps up.
"Your own solution?"
He nods and pushes away from the desk.
With a small wave, Reyo gestures for me to leave my chair and follow him around his desk to view the small screen of his computer.
An outline of a vampire is displayed in the middle.
Reyo leans over and clicks a single button and whispers for me to watch.
So do I.
The computer image of the vampire is injected with something.
I watch as the liquid pours through their veins, trickling through their arms and legs and eventually makings its way to the fake vampire's brain and heart.
I expect for it to destroy the vampire human.
But something different happens.
When the liquid finishes its journey through the heart... it starts beating.
The brain activity changes.
Then the color of the blood begins to start changing as well.
My jaw slackens as the vampire displayed on the screen begins changing... into a human.
At the end of the animation, tears of disbelief sting my eyes.
"You found a way to change them back," I whisper.
"You found a way to reverse it."
Reyo's eyes carefully study my face.
This is why he didn't want Brayden in here.
I'm not sure how my vampire would react to seeing something like this but clearly Reyo felt like it was too much to risk.
When I don't respond, Reyo leans forward a second time and the screen turns to darkness.
"We have," he confirms.
"And if we helped in this war, that is the only way in which we would agree to do so. We would find a way to capture the vampires and turn them back to humans."
The thoughts spinning through my head are moving too fast.
At first I imagine Brayden turning back into a Secondary.
Would he lose his memories all over again?
Or how would it work?
Would he forget about me? Â
Without blood, he would have no connection to me anymore.
The selfish thoughts are screaming amongst the others.
I close my eyes and find the strength to force them away.
If what Reyo is saying is true and he has a way to turn the vampires back humans or Secondaries, the Secondaries would then be the highest form of species.
Is that why he wants this?
Or is it truly for peace?
But most of all... if Reyo knew this before I came here, why hasn't he started?
Why is he telling me?
Why now?
I take a step back from him and hug my arms around my torso.
I'm terrified.
Something is off about all of this.
Reyo nods, expecting the question.
"It took us centuries to find this solution, Finn," he replies calmly.
"And we tested it by various methods until we finally perfected the process. We now have the remedy. The problem is that to mass produce this remedy, we are missing one key ingredient."
His gaze intensifies, and I back up another step when realization hits me.
My stomach lurches and I steady my breathing.
"A Nirv's blood," I say, knowing that's what it is without his confirmation.
Reyo doesn't move from where he's standing.
He simply nods a single time.
"Since the first war, we haven't been able to locate one. And what little supply we had is now long gone. We've been searching for decades. That is the only reason Tegan was allowed to bring the three of you into our home. Because of you."
I stare up at him.
"You talked about payment," I whisper hoarsely.
"This is it, isn't it? You need my blood."
Reyo nods again.
"We will help save the humans and vampires, restoring the peace to all. But to do so comes at a price. You are that price, Finn. We will need your blood. Constantly. Until every vampire has changed."
"Every vampire..." I repeat.
The tears I hadn't realize I started to cry burn the skin of my cheeks as they fall to my chin.
Reyo's expression softens and he shakes his head.
"It's not payment to me, Finn. It's not even payment for my people. It's a way to finally bring peace. You have the power to change it all... and it is in your hands where the fate of mankind now rests."

Woman Asks Shelter For Oldest, Most Overlooked Dog Shelter Workers Left Lost For Words
Rarely does a heartwarming tale unfold at a shelter, but on July 24th, the Asheville Humane Society Adoption Center witnessed a moment that moved their staff to tears. Leslie Sacks, a woman with a different perspective on adoption, arrived with an unconventional request that stirred emotions at the shelter. Rather than opting for the usual adoption route, Leslie sought the oldest and most overlooked dog in the shelter. Her desire was unwavering: to offer a forever home to a dog passed over countless times for various reasons. This extraordinary decision puzzled and moved the shelter staff. When Leslie arrived at the Asheville Humane Society in North Carolina, she met Sam, a seven-year-old dog who had spent six months at the shelter, returned after a brief adoption stint. Sam, afflicted with a severe skin allergy, displayed visible signs of her difficult journey. However, Leslie's visit took an unexpected turn when she learned about thirteen-year-old Brutus. This aging soul faced imminent euthanasia due to severe separation anxiety and multiple medical issues. Leslie stood at a crossroads, confronted with an agonizing decision. Her resolve crystallized when Leslie declared, "We can't let that happen, and we shouldn't let that happen." The motivation behind her choice traced back to a recent loss in her family, a wound still fresh. Meredith Pitcher, the center's communications manager, offered insights into Sam and Brutus's special needs. Despite concerns about Sam's compatibility with other dogs and Brutus's anxiety, Leslie remained resolute. The shelter staff anticipated Leslie's decision, hoping she would choose Brutus, yet Leslie's compassion extended further. With steely determination, she committed to welcoming both Sam and Brutus into her home. The heartwarming moment when Leslie walked Sam and Brutus to her car resonated with emotions. Amidst creaky joints and gray muzzles, Leslie assured them of a family that would love them unconditionally in their golden years. The bittersweet farewell left no dry eyes, marking a new chapter for Sam and Brutus under Leslie's care. Her act of kindness extended beyond this instance; Leslie had previously opened her heart and home to over 50 dogs in need. This exemplary act of compassion illuminates the importance of shelter adoption. Organizations like the Asheville Humane Society rely on kind-hearted individuals like Leslie to offer these overlooked animals a chance at a new life. As Meredith Pitcher eloquently expressed, "Sometimes we'll have the occasional person who has a huge heart⌠but this is the first time I've ever heard of someone saying, 'Give me your two dogs that have been here the longest with special needs.' It was incredible." The story of Sam and Brutus finding solace in Leslie's home serves as a poignant reminder of the countless animals waiting for their forever homes. It echoes a plea to the community: consider adoption, fostering, or supporting rescue organizations to help these homeless souls find love and care. Leslie's act of grace and the transformative impact on Sam and Brutus is a testament to the priceless love and second chances that every animal deserves. Read the full article
