My take on the shadowhunters TV show is that if you hadn't read the books you'd have no idea what's going on, but even if you did read the books you also have no idea what's going on

I'm rereading the mortal instruments series (after like 10 years) and the first incest plot line with Jace and Clary is wild but not quite as bad as I remember it, however the second incest plot line with Sebastian and Clary is just as bad as a I remember it if not worse

alea iacta est
alea iacta est; the die is cast.
cw: canon typical violence, fight scene
Andy tumbled through the Portal with the rest of the New York Institute, looking over the army of red-robed demonic Shadowhunters. She couldn’t bite back the snicker that arose from her, mirroring Simon’s, when she realized they could no longer use her seraph blades. She muttered the name of hers and gripped it tightly in her hand, prepared for the oncoming onslaught. She was dressed head to toe in gear and completely decked out in weapons—daggers, seraph blades, her collapsible bo staff all decorated her belt and various sheathes pulled tight around her legs and arms. And on her hip, calling for her to use it, was her latest refurbished gadget: James Herondale’s revolver.
She set out with the group, running ahead with Aline and Helen. Despite the stakes, she had to enjoy the adrenaline of battle. She’d never felt more alive than fighting in the Mortal War alongside Maia, who was there tonight. She tried to keep an eye out for her but the sea of werewolves and Ahadowhunters, Endarkened and seraphic, made that hard. A knife sliced past her arm, pausing her in her tracks, and she whipped around, blade in hand. She recognized the man in red robes, vaguely, maybe from a picture. Maybe he was another friend of Valentine’s she’d seen in old photos her mother had hidden away in the attic. He smiled cruelly, before lunging for her, his blade narrowly missing her throat. She spun and jumped, wrapping her legs around the man’s neck. She landed feet first, cutting off his breath with her legs. Without another thought, she grabbed his knife and drove it through his heart. Blood spattered on her hand and arm. There was no time for pity—Sebastian was going to die and she had to ensure that happened.
From a few feet away, she could see Magnus and Rowan, leading Simon through the brunt of the attack. At all costs, they needed to get to Sebastian at the back of this all. Some leader, she thought, before making for high ground. She saw a familiar face, Alec, and ran to follow him to high ground.
Her footsteps alerted him and he spun on her, an arrow poised to strike in his hand. She put her hands up quickly. “Easy, tiger,” she said with a smile.
Alec rolled his eyes and shot the arrow, flying past her head to strike an Endarkened Shadowhunter in the chest. He’d had a knife raised, prepared to strike her from behind, but crashed to the ground instantly.
She turned back to him and smiled. “Thanks for that.”
His eyes narrowed at her. “You’re welcome. Just watch your back.”
The two continued up the hill and onto the tombs. She observed the battlefield for a moment, crouching next to him for just a moment, looking for a place to break into the battle. She saw Sebastian better from here and wondered if she could run along the side of the army and get to him that way. “Cover me, would you?” she said. “I’m gonna get to Jace if I can—”
She dropped the seraph blades in her hands. The hood of a woman blew back, revealing brown, graying hair and a stony, blood covered expression. Even from this distance, she recognized the woman—her mother. Running towards Simon.
She nor Alec could move fast enough. The multi-colored magic shooting from Magnus’s hands suddenly stopped as Amatis Herondale plunged a dagger into his chest. Magnus crashed to his knees, and Alec, mid-step and watching the scene unfold before him, fell off the tomb and rolled into the mess. Rowan fell next to Magnus as Amatis reared back, prepared to strike again.
The world moved in slow motion. Against the Endarkened Shadowhunters, taken by surprise, Simon and Rowan had slim chances of defending themselves or keeping Magnus alive. She heard Alec, despite a red-cloaked man attacking him while he was still on the ground, call out to her. He only said her name, but she knew what he wanted. She had her opening to go after Sebastian, distract him or die trying until Simon got there, but he was pleading with her to save Magnus.
Like she’d done with target practice a million times, she pulled the gun, aimed, and pulled the trigger. The sound distracted several people over the sounds of battle, but she didn’t care—she watched the bullet fly through the air and strike her mother in the shoulder. It was the first time, with runed bullets, that the gun fired. It should have been a moment of pride, celebrating the years of work that went into this, but she watched Amatis fall face first into the ground.
She took off like a bat out of hell, cutting through any Endarkened Shadowhunters that dared get in her way in the rush to Magnus. By the time she got there, Simon had run off, no doubt trying to get to Sebastian. That was the plan from the beginning. Rowan was trying to stop Magnus from bleeding out to little avail, and Amatis turned back to them for round two.
“What has he done to you?” Andy called over the clanging of swords and cries of the injured.
“He has made me tougher,” she said, breath heaving as she clutched her arm. “Faster. Better. Join us, Andromeda. You can be stronger than you’d ever dreamed!”
Andy scoffed. “Join you?” she asked. “You know I've never been one to follow orders, Mom.”
She sneered. “You will die tonight.” She rushed towards her, not before Andy could pull the gun again and fire one, two, three bullets at her, walking closer as she did so. All missed, save for the last one, that hit her shoulder and knocked her off balance. It startled her enough for Andy to pull her staff out, narrowly blocking an attack from her mother’s sword swinging for her head. She grunted and dug her feet into the ground, using the training her mother had personally taught her. Amatis attacked again and again, blade flurrying by, leaving Andy barely enough time to defend herself, let alone attack her too.
“You can fight this!” she insisted, pushing back against her, pleading with her mother. She aimed to hit the bullet wound on her arm, hoping the pain would cripple her without injuring her further. She made solid contact but it didn’t stop her; it was like she didn’t feel pain. “Mom, you’re one of the strongest women I know! Don’t do this!”
Amatis paused, and for a moment, she thought she broke through to her. She saw a flash of the real Amatis, the one who may have struggled to show her affection, but she was still her mother. She wouldn’t hurt her like this. When she looked up, her bloody sword glistening in the moonlight, she wore the same cruel smile as the man Andy killed minutes before. “You are no daughter of mine,” she said, and sprung at her. Andy cried out, feeling the blade slice her knuckles and back of her hand as she put the staff up to block her attack.
Amatis cackled, and a sinking feeling appeared in Andy’s chest. No longer was she confident, enjoying the adrenaline rush of battle, swinging swords against the ‘bad guys’. She now wondered if she would survive the night.

Incest ain't Wincest people, please🤢🤮
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why did Sebastian/Jonathan Morgenstern ever have to be into his own SISTER??? Like I know he had demon blood, and he did and thought a bunch of f-ed up stuff, BUT STILL. And the whole thing when Clary and Jace were led to believe they were SIBLINGS?? LIKE WHY THO??? Incest ain’t wincest 🤢it’s illegal and gross🤮. Authors and creators, please don’t have incest in your stories, I’m begging you, please. It is a HUGE TURNOFF.

The Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare
DISCLAIMER: These are my opinions. I do not mean harm - neither to the creator of this wonderful series, nor to the fandom and any of its followers. If you do not agree with my opinion, please do not engage merely to fight with me (I don't like it).
The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare is a mixed bag of brilliance and flaws, particularly when revisited with a more critical eye.
I'd started reading this during a reading slump, so the books seemed absolutely perfect - filled with fast-paced action, vivid world-building, and a character-driven plot that never felt dull. The relatable flaws of the characters, especially Clary's ideals and Jace's identity crisis arc, made them endearing (at least in the first four books).
The first three books stood out, reflecting Clare’s meticulous research and captivating writing style, which skillfully incorporated advanced vocabulary. These elements created a strong and powerful narrative that resonated deeply, making the books a joy to read (especially during a reading slump, when you want nothing serious).
Simon's character was sort of relatable as well, and Magnus and Alec's relationship was really sweet. Isabelle was fairly fine as a character (mind you, I'm only talking about the first three books) - so no qualms for any of them (they were written as well as they could have been written).
However, the series' latter half falters. The fourth book was fine, merely as a check-in on beloved characters, but by the fifth and sixth installments, the story had fallen apart. The writing style had lost it's grip on me.
Clary's transformation into a Mary Sue (reminiscent of Bella from Twilight), was particularly disappointing. Her character became obsessed with Jace, reducing her personality to just her relationship with him (you know those high-school couples that make dating their entire personality?). Additionally, Clare’s portrayal of Clary’s victim complex was frustrating; in every battle, Clary does so little yet ends up needing the most care - which felt unrealistic and annoying.
Sebastian was just straight-up psychopathic (which was great - I love psychopathic antagonists) but he should have remained dead, in my opinion. The Lilith plot-line was just an unnecessary appendage.
A significant shortcoming of the series is its superficial treatment of human emotions. Despite being a character-driven story, the emotional depth of characters like Clary and Jace is often glossed over. Their traumas are mentioned but never fully explored, making their reactions feel shallow and disconnected from their experiences. For instance, the death of Jordan Kyle, a close friend, is barely acknowledged, with the characters quickly moving on without much reflection or grief (literally they're like: oh, that's sad. Hey, those are funny, undersized pajamas!).
The series also became repetitive, with a recurring plot cycle involving Jace getting possessed -> shutting down/running away -> Clary attempting to "save" him (read: putting more people in danger).
This redundancy, coupled with the lack of emotional realism, made the latter books feel like a letdown. Ultimately, the series should have ended after the first three books - which delivered a powerful message about a neglectful government and a flawed revolution. The decision to extend the series only diluted its impact, turning it into a disappointing follow-up to an initially strong start.
Yeah, I don't think I'll read the rest of the Shadowhunters mega-series
-X-

Jace's letter to Clary (City of Glass)
Clary,
Despite everything, I can't bear the thought of this ring being lost forever, any more then I can bear the thought of leaving you forever. And though I have no choice about the one, at least I can choose about the other. I'm leaving you our family ring because you have as much right to it as I do.
I'm writing this watching the sun come up. You're asleep, dreams moving behind your restless eyelids. I wish I knew what you were thinking. I wish I could slip into your head and see the world the way you do. I wish I could see myself the way you do. But maybe I don't want to see that. Maybe it would make me feel even more than I already do that I'm perpetuating some kind of Great Lie on you, and I couldn't stand that.
I belong to you. You could do anything you wanted with me and I would let you. You could ask anything of me and I'd break myself trying to make you happy. My heart tells me this is the best and greatest feeling I have ever had. But my mind knows the difference between wanting what you can't have and wanting what you shouldn't want. And I shouldn't want you.
All night I've watched you sleeping, watched the moonlight come and go, casting its shadows across your face in black and white. I've never seen anything more beautiful. I think of the life we could have had if things were different, a life where this night is not a singular event, separate from everything else that's real, but every night. But things aren't different, and I can't look at you without feeling like I've tricked you into loving me.
The truth no one is willing to say out loud is that no one has a shot against Valentine but me. I can get close to him like no one else can. I can pretend I want to join him and he'll believe me, up until that last moment where I end it all, one way or another. I have something of Sebastian's; I can track him to where my father's hiding, and that's what I'm going to do. So I lied to you last night. I said I just wanted one night with you. But I want every night with you. And that's why I have to slip out of your window now, like a coward. Because if I had to tell you this to your face, I couldn't make myself go.
I don't blame you if you hate me, I wish you would. As long as I can still dream, I will dream of you

when you dislike the MC of a good series AKA Who Will Die in The Wicked Powers
damn, being petty enough to flip off the MC x canon ship in my (favorite) fandom is really kicking me in the ass--
yeah, basically I can't touch half the TSC stuff on Tumblr bc I'm so anti-Clace...(meanwhile I love literally every other character that's been in every Shadowhunter series)...& they're probably gonna have a wedding + kids in the next books (assuming Jace isn't killed)...
The Wicked Powers is most definitely gonna have the Princes of Hell as the main villains. I feel like Luke, Gwyn, or Izzy will die, since the younger Shadowhunters are supposed to be central & well...look at the couples who will be alive/extant by TWP:
SPOILERS FOR ALL SHADOWHUNTER BOOKS!!
Jace & Clary
Magnus & Alec
Simon & Izzy
Julian & Emma
Kit & Ty
Kieran/Cristina/Mark
Dru & Ash (& maybe Jaime)
Diana & Gwyn
Luke & Jocelyn
Tessa & Jem
(forgive me if I'm missing anyone!)
Jace already died once. Clary had dreams about dying, but those were shown to be visions of Thule. Based on canon events, I think they're Clare's favorite ship. SAFE.
Magnus almost gave himself to Asmodeus in CoHF. Alec almost-ish died saving Magnus in The Eldest Curses. Also, Alec almost died thanks to that poison demon in TMI (the one Magnus saved him from). Malec might end up forced to rule some region of Hell (reason unknown but I think it'll have to do with them beating/destroying Asmodeus). I feel like past events foreshadow Magnus dealing with the unfortunate sides of being a warlock. But he won't die--the "killing your gays" trope might actually save he & Alec.
Simon nearly died when the vampires attacked him (when he was a mundane), then when Valentine bled him pre-Daylighter (then Jace's blood saved him). He "sacrificed" himself to Asmodeus CoHF, in the form of his vampire immortality + memories (which he basically got back later on). Izzy...she's been through a lot psychologically & about as much as I think most Shadowhunters would physically. She lost Max & her dad. But she's a badass (I'm not faulting her for it, either). So I don't think she's safe.
Julian & Emma both lost their parents in horrible ways. Their whole series was about the parabatai curse (which, to me, was conveniently not mentioned in chronologically earlier series...probably because it wasn't invented til TDA was written, lol). They're kinda written to be the leaders of Livvy's Watch. SAFE.
Kit has his whole faerie power reveal shit to explore & he + Ty are some of the major characters in TWP. I'm pretty sure they'll spend the series healing their relationship. SAFE.
Kieran/Cristina/Mark will survive because 1) Kieran as the Unseelie King is an important Shadowhunter ally, 2) they're poly rep in YA, which is rare, and 3) killing one of them off would leave the others to mourn in such a weird way. SAFE.
I love Dru Blackthorn. She's one of the main of TWP, so I think she'll survive, plus tbh I don't think any more Blackthorns will be killed. Ash will probably end up as the Seelie King or as Clace's adopted son, to "redeem" Sebastian in a narrative sense. Jaime's sort of a main for TWP as one of Dru's love interests. SAFE.
Diana & Gwyn aren't main characters (though I like their romance). Diana also is the ONLY transgender person in all the books (unless I missed something). I don't think she'll be killed off. Gwyn might be just because I see the Wild Hunt as an important group in TWP & he might die protecting Diana (narratively, this shows strengthened faerie-Shadowhunter relations, despite the Wild Hunt being unaffiliated with either Court).
Luke & Jocelyn deserve to be endgame, but I could see Luke being killed off as one of those "MC's loved one is killed so the MC goes & avenges them" type of things. I love Luke & Jocelyn as characters, though.
Tessa & Jem deserve to be endgame, arguably, more than any couple. They were the mains in their series, then Jem survived but was sort-of-"lost" when he became a Silent Brother. Then he miraculously became a (mortal) Shadowhunter again when he was burned by heavenly fire, he just left the Clave behind to hang with Tessa (good choice!). Tessa has a baby & she's gonna suffer enough when she outlives Jem. SAFE?

I did a post about it and I will probably write a fic about it at some point but anyway...
A Dead Boy Detective x Shadowhunters crossover (spoilers of The Mortal Instruments ahead)
Edwin and Charles are obviously parabatai, and then in Pandemonium they meet Crystal while killing demons, and she can see them.
And while I am in for Edwin x Charles, it would be funnier (and less dangerous) if it was literally like the Jace-Alec situation, so Edwin fell for Charles at some point and Charles falls for Crystal. And obviously Edwin doesn't accept her (she is dangerous for their relationship but also who the hell are you??? You can see us but you're not a shadowhunter?? What??)
So they go to get a sorcerer to deal with Crystal's missing memories (the case of Crystal Palace but Shadowhunters style basically; Clary also was amnesiac) and it is some sexy sorcerer with cat eyes... The Cat King.
(It is almost terrifying the way they fit in that story)
So Edwin falls for him. Parabatai bond saved, sexy sorcerer acquired.
(Also, while Charles doesn't have any particular power like Jace, the personalities of Jace and Charles and Alec and Edwin are very similar. Jace and Charles being the charismatic and extrovert ones while Alec and Edwin are the more introvert ones but, how they put it in the books? With hidden beauty? Considering that Edwin is the no-rizz-but-all-rizz one of the couple, it IS fitting. Also, Alec is definitely the brain and Jace the brawn of their duo)
And Niko as Simon! The nerd human best friend that dies and comes back as a vampire and just sticks around!
Not sure if Monty would be a vampire like Raphael or a werewolf tho. It would be funny to have Monty and Niko as besties.
I don't think I can find more similarities for the worldbuilding actually, since I can't really see nor Esther or the Night Nurse as Valentine (eventually David as Sebastian but you know... Sebastian is way cooler than him) but still... It's something. And I really like it.

🔥 anything tsc related
the biggest problem with Queen of Air and Darkness to me is that it really should have been two books. I really enjoy the grief exploration in that book in the wake of Livvy’s death felt cathartic to me on reread and I find Julian’s switch-off arc in relation to that fascinating. I enjoy Thule in terms of how it ties into the main arc with the blackthorns although I’m not crazy about the twp set ups from it. Basically there’s quite a bit in that book I do like but as a finale it’s rushed and disappointing. I also do think either Julian or Emma or both dying would have made the ending slay and I say this as someone who clearly looooves them both and Blackstairs (considering how much I love blackstairs as it is think I would be even more insane about it if we got full tragic potential realized).
Grace x Lucie is thee toxic yuri dynamic in tsc and I think ya’ll are cowards for not paying attention to it. Literally the only reason I would reread tlh is to write fic about them ChoI era because someone should.
on a related note Lucie Herondale reads as a lesbian to me, she says at one point she’s never been attracted to a boy other than Jesse who is kind of a phantom she can make into whatever she wants / project storybook romance tropes onto in a sense for most of the books and she reads as more attracted to Cordelia with the whole ‘Beautiful Cordelia’ fanfiction and like I said her most interesting dynamic with the most chemistry is her and Grace, so yeah I get comp het vibes personally I know that’s my subjective read.
I’m pretty neutral on Clary sometimes I really liked her sometimes I was frustrated by her but I do think this counts as unpopular since most either hate or love her. I do think she falls into the 2010s heroine who is written to have an overly romantically focused arc but all her interesting bits of characterization are about tangential platonic dynamics that the author doesn’t care to elaborate on much… but also this could be an ungenerous or overly generous assessment since it’s been years since I touched og tmi. I do side eye some people for giving Jace a lot of grace to be ‘complex’ and process his trauma and be dismissive of how much she goes through in the books ( I kind of hate Jace. without nuance)
I think I deserve one on one Tessa and Julian interactions in twp, not for any logical reason I just think I deserve it since they’re my two favorite tsc characters. And there’s a lot of fan service in recent tsc anyway… let me have this.
Kieran is overrated I don’t dislike him and enjoy him in the context of Kierarktina and as a foil to Julian, but I don’t fervently love him the way a lot of people do. (I also really disliked his fandom when the tda books were coming out so that might influence this).
I want Thule! Emma to come into play in twp … I’m very interested in the idea of her in the aftermath of Thule Julian and Sebastian’s deaths. I had an idea for a fic about her but didn’t write it partly because of laziness partly because I felt I’d have to go back to tmi to remember endarkened lore for that.
Grace Blackthorn discourse was kind of unserious… not because I don’t think people can have valid reasons to dislike her obviously those exist. What she did to James was sexual assault and of course fans who hate her for it are valid. But I COULD NOT with some of statements about her especially on twitter that were like ‘well if she was a Male Character ya’ll would never forgive her and she would never get a redemption arc she only does cause she’s a pretty white girl’ like GORL. GORL what universe are you living in what paranormal/fantasy media do you consume and engage in fandoms for if you think that a male character who does a nebulous magical consent violation is going to get Less grace (no pun intended) from the narrative and fandom than a female character and would NEVER get a redemption arc. I can’t even ya’ll are dumb. If I’m being really generous maybe they just don’t read/watch a lot of paranormal media other than tsc because otherwise I…
Thanks for the ask <3
(send me a 🔥+topic/fandom and I’ll give some unpopular opinions)

City of Lost Souls, Chapter 21: Raising Hell
please see the masterlist for notes about this series/collection of works
"Can you see her?" Jocelyn demanded. "Is she there?"
Simon tried to focus on the milling darkness ahead of him, his vampire senses sharpening at the distinct scent of blood. Different kinds of blood, mixing together—Shadowhunter blood, demon blood, and the bitterness of Sebastian's blood. "I see her," he said. "Jace has hold of her. He's pulling her behind that line of Shadowhunters there."
"If they're loyal to Jonathan like the Circle was to Valentine, they'll make a wall of bodies to protect him, and Clary and Jace along with him." Jocelyn was all cold maternal fury, her green eyes burning. "We're going to have to break through it to get to them."
“We need to get to Sebastian,” said Rowan. “Simon, we’ll make you a path. You get to Sebastian and run him through with that sword. Once he dies—”
"The others will probably scatter," said Magnus. "Or, depending on how tied they are to Sebastian, they might die and collapse along with him. We can hope, at least." He craned his head back. "Speaking of hope, did you see that shot Alec got off with his bow? That's my boyfriend." He beamed and wiggled his fingers; blue sparks shot from them. He shone all over. Only Magnus, Simon thought resignedly, would have access to sequined battle armor.
Rowan pulled their chakram off of their belt and turned toward Simon, white-knuckled fists on both of them. They were anxious, as much as they were trying to hide it. “Are you ready?”
Simon's shoulders tightened. They were still some distance from the line of the opposing army— he didn't know how else to think of them—who were holding their line in their red robes and gear, their hands bristling with weapons. Some of them were exclaiming out loud in confusion. He couldn't hold back a grin.
“Hell, Simon,” Rowan said exasperatedly. “What are you smiling about?”
"Their seraph blades don't work anymore," said Simon. "They’re trying to figure out why. Sebastian just shouted at them to use other weapons." A cry came up from the line as another arrow swooped down from the tomb and buried itself in the back of a burly red-robed Shadowhunter, who collapsed forward. The line jerked and opened slightly, like a fracture in a wall. Simon, seeing his chance, dashed forward, and the others rushed with him.
It was like diving into a black ocean at night, an ocean, filled with sharks and viciously toothed sea creatures colliding against one another. It was not the first battle Simon had ever been in, but during the Mortal War he had been newly Marked with the Mark of Cain. It hadn't quite begun working yet, though many demons had reeled back upon seeing it. He had never thought he would miss it, but he missed it now, as he tried to shove forward through the tightly packed Shadowhunters, who hacked at him with blades. Rowan was on one side of him, Magnus on the other, protecting him—protecting Glorious. Rowan’s silver knives flew through the air and shone in the moonlight, and Magnus's hands spat fire, red and green and blue. Lashes of colored fire struck the dark Nephilim, burning them where they stood. Other Shadowhunters screamed as Luke's wolves slunk among them, nipping and biting, leaping for their throats.
A dagger shot out with astonishing speed and sliced at Simon's side. He cried out but kept going, knowing the wound would knit itself together in seconds. He pushed forward—and froze. A familiar face was before him. Luke's sister, Amatis. As her eyes settled on him, he saw the recognition in them. What was she doing here? Had she come to fight alongside them? But—
She lunged at him, a darkly gleaming dagger in her hand. She was fast—but not so fast that his vampire reflexes couldn't have saved him, if he hadn't been too astonished to move. Amatis was Luke's sister; he knew her; and that moment of disbelief might have been the end of him if Magnus hadn't jumped in front of him, shoving him backward. Blue fire shot from Magnus's hand, but Amatis was faster than the warlock, too. She spun away from the blaze and under Magnus's arm, and Simon caught the flash of moonlight off the blade of her knife. Magnus's eyes widened in shock as her midnight-colored blade drove downward, slicing through his armor. She jerked it back, the blade now slick with reflective blood; Rowan screamed as Magnus collapsed to his knees. Simon tried to turn toward him, but the surge and pressure of the fighting crowd was carrying him away. He cried out Magnus's name as Amatis bent over the fallen warlock and raised the dagger a second time, aiming for his heart.
Amatis drove a knife toward Magnus’s heart—just as a loud boom sounded over the fighting. Something small, a bullet, Simon realized, flew through the air. He did live in Brooklyn, but he thought Shadowhunters didn't use guns. The bullet slammed into Amatis’s shoulder with such force that she spun halfway around and fell face-forward to the rocky ground. She was screaming, a noise quickly drowned out by the clash of weapons around them. Rowan knelt by Magnus’s side; Simon, glancing up, saw Andy on the stone tomb, standing frozen with a smoking gun in her hand, blond curls blowing in the wind. She looked like a character from a movie—blood staining her face and gear, staring her mother down without an ounce of sympathy.  Rowan had their hands against the warlock’s chest, but Magnus—Magnus, who was always so kinetic, so bursting with energy—was utterly still under their touch. They looked up and saw Simon staring at them; their hands were red with blood, but they shook their head at him violently.
“Go!” they shouted. “Find Sebastian!”
With a wrench, Simon turned himself around and plunged back into the battle.
