typographic map poster

This simple map project makes a lovely poster that is a great custom gift for a friend or family member, or just as a reminder of an important place in your life.

Trace the outline of a city with a pencil on a big piece of paper. Use art supplies to fill in the map with many words and phrases in different lettering styles. Use newspaper headlines, song lyrics, poetry, neighborhood names, interesting facts, or anything that gives words to the city you love. Use an eraser to lightly remove any pencil marks. I scanned mine and made a neat poster, printed on 11 x 17 paper.

Also: If the area of the world you picked doesn't have large bodies of water or a coastline to paint, you can always do the city or county boundaries or border!

1960s promotional poster for blues singer and guitarist Albert Collins for his performance at the ‘Fresh Air Tavern’ (venue that featured other artists ranging from Chico Hamilton, John Lee Hooker, J.J. Cale, Gabor Szabor, Muddy Waters, and Billy Joel) in Seattle on 1509 Broadway Street in Capital Hill.

This tavern was later remolded into a video game emporium, and a now defunct gay bar that was known by the name of ‘Neighbors.’ The only surviving forms of history are through promotional posters of the various artists, and concerts that were held, as well as an antidote shared by Billy Joel at his concert in ‘Safeco Field’ on May 20, 2016:

”I first played here back in the early seventies [specifically 1971]. It was a little pub called the ‘Fresh Air Tavern’ and it was a dump. Wasn’t anything like this at all.”

I was replaying Ellie’s Seattle day 3 and got to the point where her and Jesse go to the one building with all the comic posters and where they decide their was a convention there and I got an idea. i was wondering if you could write mordern!ellie taking reader to a comic convention and nerding out. you trudged through the hot crowd, shading your eyes with your hand from the radiant august sun.

you were at a convention with your girlfriend, who had begged you to go with her during summer. for the most part, you had no idea what she was getting excited over, but you happily took pictures of her with writers and cosplayers regardless.

when ellie told you she was going to the bathroom, you divided to wander around the massive space. there were a few popular comics you recognized, such as spiderman, batman, and your favorite, the flash.

you saw bright flashing signs of DC and marvel, fondly remembering the time when ellie gave you a very lengthy lecture on the difference between the two after you had said, "but, they seem the same to me...?"

a booth caught your eye where people were dressed up in intricate armor and handing each other cards. you approached them and studied the cards laid out. a woman sitting on a chair noticed you and smiled.

"hi! looking to trade or buy any cards or figurines?"

she gestured to the array of options on the table.

"um, which ones are from uh...savage starlight? it's my girlfriend's favorite so i wanna get something for her, but i don't know much about it."

"oh, that's no problem," she began shuffling around the cards and placed a figurine in front of you, "these are all savage starlight. you're lucky you came now, it's been very popular."

you pointed to a card of a woman named dr. daniela star. her hair sort of looked like ellie's, and she looked like a badass.

"how much for this one?"

she winced, "about $145, she's extremely rare, and that's the last copy we have."

"oh shit," you chuckled, "it's ok, i'll get it."

you bought the card and stepped away to look at more booths. your phone buzzed with a notification.

you found your way upstairs eventually and found ellie, grinning widely while holding a trading card. it looked similar to the one you had just bought, with the same trimming and design on the back.

"look what i found! it's the robot one i was telling you about!"

"oh wow, that's great! doesn't that mean you only need a few more to finish the collection?"

she groaned and threw her head back. "yeah, i just need two more. one is way too expensive though, and the other is impossible to find. it's dr. star, the scientist that created the robot," she held up the robot with a disappointed look, then slipped it into her pocket.

you intertwined her hand with yours. "let's keep looking around, i'm sure you can find something else cool."

she nodded as she led you downstairs to continue strolling around the convention.

"you're so wrong! i would be mj and you're peter!" you teased ellie while you giggled as she rolled her eyes.

"fine, but i'm gwen and you're miles," she remarked, as the two of you stepped outside into the chilling air. you continued to bicker playfully as you walked to the car. as you stepped in ellie sighed.

"thanks for coming to this with me. you have fun?"

you nodded, "yeah, actually, i got a funny picture with someone that was dressed up as ronald mcdonald. i sent it to jesse and dina and they said "oh my god, you found your twin."

ellie let out a loud laugh, and you continued to talk about the experience with her, sharing cool things you saw as you wandered around alone.

"ugh about that, i'm still so upset i couldn't find the card i wanted," she said, voice laced with sadness as she shifted the car into gear to drive home. "it's all good, next year they might have it, or i could find it on ebay if i sell an organ or two," she shrugged at you and placed her hands on the wheel.

you placed your hand on top of hers to stop her.

"actually, while you were in the bathroom i found something," you reached into your purse and pulled out the dr. daniela star card, still encased in the plastic protection.

"oh my fucking god," she breathed, her jaw slack.

you bit your lip as she simply stared. a few seconds passed.

"...ellie do you like it?"

"i love you," she said, taking the card into her hands and inspecting it.

you snickered. "me or her?"

her gaze shot up to yours. "you, you. of course," she set the card down to grab your face with both hands and kiss you so hard you nearly tipped over onto the window. she pulled away for only to fall back onto you again, hugging you tightly mumbling "thankyouthankyouthankyou" into your shirt.

she sat back up and took the robot card from her pocket and compared the two of them. she looked like she was in awe. it was adorable.

"you're such a dork," you said.

"yeah, you love it though."

behold my abominable contribution to this year's Words of Courage publication 🎉🎉

WoC is a yearly publication of poetry broadsides written by patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and designed, printed, and bound into portfolios by local letterpress & book artists. this year’s whole edition will be scanned and posted there in a couple weeks & previous years are always there to see!

knew that i wanted this one immediately; this kid is SO cool and funny. personally i am deeply arachnophobic and have been doing some spider illustrations as exposure therapy. so far no discernible effect!! still very afraid of em. don't like to see em. research phase is a horror. but i am getting better at drawing them.

the Neuland for the sound effect was a no-brainer to me, plus i knew i would be varying the size and we have the original hand-cut stuff so each size of the face has little differences in the letter forms that you can spot. that little change in angle on the Cs, i love it so so much.

i didn't want to make the spider a cartoon. this reach for the skies pose is a real thing tarantulas do as a defensive back-off posture, so i was aiming for more of a posterized-from-photograph feel on the linocuts. reduction cut for the pink and red passes, separate block for the blue. the little bit of wobbly registration between the red and blue blocks helps the posterization feel, and some people also said it reminded them of riso, which i thought was very neat.

thought about printing the motion lines from rule as well, but it's a lot of text and i wanted it to stay very readable. so i made an embossing jig out of masking tape and hand-scored each of the lines into the edition instead. easy! well. simple anyway. 100 of em does strain the wrist so i only did a few at a time over a couple days. i finished a little ahead of schedule and this felt less…stressfully complicated than some other projects I've done so I kept looking at it and worrying that it wasn't actually finished?? when i'm not looking at it i still worry about that. but i'm, hmm, when i see it i'm really pretty sure i was correct to stop here.

The Interview    Q:        Rio, if you could be an animal, what animal would you like to be? A:        I’d be a tarantula. They make beautiful webs. Some tarantulas eat birds!   Q:        If you could be a color, what color appeals to you?

A:        I’d be red velvet like the red velvet cupcakes at Cupcake Royale. I’d also be aqua blue, the color of hospital masks.   Q:        What loud noise would you like to be if you could be one? A:        Definitely the sound of a bird screeching while being eaten by a tarantula.   Q:        Suppose you could be a musical instrument? A:        I’d love that! And I’d love to be a Latin Afuche Cabasa. It’s a stick with tiny metal spheres around it. When you rotate it in your hand it makes the sound Chichichichichichichichi.   Q:        Rio, can you imagine having wheels?  A:        I can! I’d be a buggy. I ride the hospital buggies every day when I’m here. They make me feel happy and fast! And wanting to go! Go!

but yes, i liked how the on ice sequence with all the lil fellas was turning out,, meaning i wanted to share this work elsewhere and not only tumblr,,, which meant the depressed adam and in love bi-colored larsdunn and Literally Everything pretty much didn't really make sense as just hockey poster... and so i went with the flow and made something totally different... and then also swam back that flow to make my original idea as well lol. i love both equally and alsooo

Final Steel Wool PAX Predictions: “Of Helpy, Scraptrap, and Carrot Cake”

Okay, this is my last Steel Wool at PAX West/Freddy’s Birthday Bash prediction ramble before the actual event arrives. Mainly because I’m not entirely sure if I’ll have anything to add before then.

The rambling gets a smidge long, so I’m putting this below the cut. Happy reading..

I’m pretty sure about one thing, and that’s we’ll see the conclusion of Where’s Helpy? game. The last post was a cliffhanger with extra tags spelling out “SEATTLE”, and PAX West (iirc) is in Seattle. I’m going to be disappointed if it’s not.

Speaking of disappointment, I’m going to keep my hopes low and assume Helpy didn’t drag Dr. Scraptrap along for the ride. ..That is to say, we’re probably not going to get Help Wanted 2 DLC news at the event.

I know, I just made a post about the possibility of it showing up. I know I also saw on Steel Wool’s Twitter that there’s a “Dress as Your Favorite FNAF Rabbit” on September 2nd (iirc). I am fully aware that I just wrapped up a mini-saga of improvised art challenge sketches where Scraptrap gets emotionally wrecked by Helpi, and for all I know it could be another accidental prediction.

But if there is one thing I’ve also learned when predicting for FNAF stuff, it’s this: I need to assume the worst, and be very unsurprised when it happens. If I get overly hyped up for a second, then it’s not happening.

So I’m playing it safe and saying “Do not expect Dr. Scraptrap at this event”. Not even a cosplay.

Moving on…

Cassie and the whole Carrot Cake thing.

Unless I missed something, we didn’t get carrot cake on Steel Wool’s Twitter for the whole “Eight Days Of Freddy” thing. Not even a picture of an actual carrot cake from one of the developers.

So I’m still going with that part of my theory, but I’m switching up DLCs.

We might just get another chapter in Ruin, or something related to it in a book. Maybe that Escape From The Pizzaplex thing will get properly announced idk.

The point is: If there’s any rabbits that might return to relevancy, it’s Cassie’s take on Vanny. We could even get a new teaser for a new full-suit design.

…Or, y’know, the devs did celebrate with literal carrit cake and I just didn’t look at the right Twitter profiles. That’s entirely possible. If they did, please let me know so I can cross this off my list. Thank you in advance.

The last things I can think of are exclusive YouTooz drops, but what those could be idk. Maybe it’ll just be another poster or something.

TL;DR— My predictions are:

(1) Where’s Helpy will be concluded.

(2) No, “Patrick”, Help Wanted 2 DLC will not be announced. Scraptrap will not return either.

(3) Something about Cassie and/or literal carrot cake. Alternatively, we get Ruin-related news.

All in all, a pretty fun event but definitely lower key than last year. If any of these are wrong later, feel free to come back to this and type “that aged like Fizzy-Faz lol”.
