Yet another monsterfucker ace here! I think it makes total sense why ace people would be into monsters. I actually love queer monsterfucking in general. There’s actually an academic area of study kind of related to this, about how queer people love and identify with fictional monsters! I personally think not enough of it focuses on the sexual aspects because the connections seem to be very clear. I have a lot of thoughts about queer monsterfucking! Especially ace, aro, and aroace monsterfucking!

Beauty and the Beast came up in the Seattle Aces & Aros discussion group today. This particular topic wasn’t explicitly mentioned, but this conversation seems relevant to that.

Okay please bear with me for a moment because I’m just FASCINATED by this.

The last reblog was not only hilarious to me (oh my god, the pride flag with the tentacle????), but was also the first I had heard of the Seattle Kraken, a new expansion team in the NHL that hasn’t even played yet.  So if, like me, you are thinking “I didn’t know Seattle had a hockey team???” you aren’t wrong.  They will debut in the 2021-22 season, but they are very clearly ramping up advertising in order to build buzz.

Anyway -- so once upon a time in the early 00s, I followed hockey pretty closely for a few years.  (I do remember endless debates at the time about putting a team in Seattle.  20 years later, it’s happened, I guess!)  However, I have not really paid attention to it for a number of years, and certainly not recently.  I was aware that the NHL, like so many other corporate entities, was doing some Pride stuff this month.  But I never went to look closely into what any of the teams were doing.

That’s why I posted all of the tweets above, in chronological order through the month of June.  This was not a one-off thing, at least for the Kraken.   They did this ALL MONTH, and it was a combo of symbolism (did you want ace-flag or nonbinary-flag Seattle Kraken-themed wallpapers? they got you covered!), events (the Seattle Pride Classic game), and some actual activism.  So, you go, guys!  These kinds of Pride endeavors often seem lip-service-y, but if you’re really trying to drive business to lgbtqia+ owned small businesses, that doesn’t suck.  Nor does the initiative to promote gender diversity and inclusion in youth sports in WA state.

There’s no way we were getting out of this without my making some comments regarding the Seattle Kraken branding, so here goes:

Name: obviously, great.

Color scheme: fine.  I’m not versed enough right now in the breadth of NHL team colors to know how much this stands out, but, it does harmonize with some of the other major Seattle sports teams.   It is a bit too close to the Vancouver Canucks, who use very dark blue with silver accents, plus some green accents.  But ehn, it’s very hard to keep teams from wanting dark colors, and that’s why you make them have different logos and make the away team wear white jerseys.

Logo: ehhhhhhhhn.  I don’t like it, purely because I feel that the tentacle is not obvious enough.  Like, it’s an okay concept?  But the bumps need to be bigger so that it’s more obviously a tentacle.

As usual, fan designs are 1000% better than the actual designs the team has settled on.  Check out this fan logo/jersey concept:

The tentacle-S wrapped around the anchor?  C’mon, that’s fantastic.  (I’m in favor of the old-fashion-y stripped sleeves, even though no major team uses them for their standard jerseys.  This concept was specifically for an “alternate” jersey that the team would only wear sometimes, but I think it rocks.  Anyway, I’m mostly using it to point out the logo concept.)

So there you have it, my Seattle Kraken thoughts that nobody wanted.  Carry on.
