Rosaline is an amusing trifle, an exercise in parashakespeare like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Tom Stoppard, 1990) or Shakespeare in Love (John Madden, 1998), though I'm sure neither screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber nor Rebecca Serle, the author of the book on which Rosaline is based, would be eager to invite comparison with Stoppard's erudition and wit. In Romeo and Juliet, Rosaline is only a plot device: Juliet's cousin, with whom Romeo is infatuated, she's never seen in the play, but serves only, via the teasing of his friends, to emphasize Romeo's bent toward romantic ardor. The film casually turns the play on its head, converting tragedy into rom-com, as Kaitlyn Dever's Rosaline gets her revenge on Romeo's fickleness by trying to make him fall out of love with Juliet. Dever is a fine comic actress, and she gets good support from the rest of the cast. Kyle Allen, looking a bit like Heath Ledger in another parashakespearean movie, 10 Things I Hate About You (Gil Junger, 1999), plays Romeo as a lovestruck goof. His Juliet (Isabela Merced) is a faux naïf from the country, who manages to get the upper hand on the manipulative Rosaline. (There's a mid-credits scene at the end that suggests things will not go smoothly for Romeo and Juliet after they escape Verona by means of a fake death.) Bradley Whitford plays Rosaline's father, determined to marry off his independent-minded daughter. After a series of superannuated suitors whom Rosaline manages to scare off, he comes up with the handsome young Dario (Sean Teale), whom she initially rejects, but everyone who has ever seen a rom-com knows she will eventually fall for. There are nice comic bits from Spencer Stevenson as Paris, Rosaline's gay best friend who gets roped into an engagement with Juliet, and Nico Hiraga as Steve the Courier, a stoner who delivers -- or fails to deliver -- the crucial messages that in the original play would precipitate tragedy. And while Juliet's nurse plays a key role in Shakespeare, she's only a bit part in the movie. Instead, there's Minnie Driver as Rosaline's nurse, indignantly insisting that she's a trained registered nurse, not a babysitter. The screenplay wisely jettisons any attempt to evoke Shakespearean language and adopts contemporary speech that jars amusingly with the period setting and costumes. Director Karen Maine keeps all this fluff nicely airborne.

you’ve been twisted up till you’ve become just another part of it

He didn’t mean to see it. He wasn’t even supposed to be out there, but we’ll get to that later. Angel Garcia has lived in Roswell, New Mexico all of his life. His family's lived there for years, and their shop, Garcia’s Family Bakery has been there almost as long. The eldest son of four kids, Angel grew up feeling the heavy pressure of expectation on his shoulders, and he tried his best to live up to it. A star athlete, Honor Roll student, Senior Class President, and Prom King - he checked just about every box you could imagine all while managing to work at his family’s shop. But much like any hero, he was flawed. Beneath it all, Angel struggled to keep up with his personal relationships. While what he wanted most was to make his family proud, he barely spent any time with them. His younger sisters were growing older, and he missed it all: birthdays, recitals, soccer games. Calls from his mother were returned with brief texts. Whenever his father tried to spend some quality time with his son, Angel brushed him off and drove away. He may have seemed like the perfect son, but he was far from it. 

Right before he was set to head off to college (full-ride scholarship to Stanford), Angel received a phone call from a number he didn’t know. It was the Medical Center. His family had been in a fatal car crash, and only two of his sisters had survived. This was the moment that changed everything. Without any family in the states, it was up to Angel to arrange the funerals, burials, all of it. Along with that, he immediately became guardian to his sisters. At 18, this was more responsibility than he’d ever faced in his life. He was just about to spend four years partying and going to class, and now he was grieving parents he cast aside and raising two young girls. The shock made it easier to handle at first, but once the adrenaline wore off, Angel was a wreck. There was nothing to prepare him for this - no amount of leadership roles or teamwork skills could’ve made him ready. Plus, there was a part of him that felt he didn’t deserve to grieve. Yes, that was his family, but what did he ever do for them? So many family meals missed and for what? Another bullet to put on college applications? It’s something he still deals with, although it comes in waves now rather than the constant barrage it used to be. 

With help from some friends and a few years to adjust, Angel was able to establish a routine for him and his sisters. It wasn’t the normal they were used to, but it was a normal. The absence of the rest of their family was felt everyday, and it wasn’t something Angel ignored. He would tell his sisters stories - the ones he remembered - of the time he did get to spend with their parents and sister who’d died. They were bits and pieces, but they were something, and Angel owed them at least that. They deserved to be remembered. He honored them in the bakery as well. Rediscovering his talents in the kitchen, Angel carried on with the family business and put up framed pictures of his parents and sister on the wall. He didn’t want anyone to forget them. 

Now to return to the beginning of our story...it was the anniversary of the crash, and as was his own tradition, Angel went to visit the site of impact and leave behind three roses - one for each of them. As he was about to leave, he heard some barking off in the distance. There was a poster he’d seen around town for a lost dog, so he followed the noise, lighting the desert night with his phone. As he got closer, he realized that he’d crossed the barrier set by the Military - the one civilians weren’t meant to breach. He could’ve turned back, but he was so close.

Approaching the noise, Angel followed it into a cave. Luckily, he found the dog, but what he saw behind it was something he had no words for - a glowing egg with what looked like a person inside. He didn’t know what he was doing, but he felt drawn to it, hypnotized. When he reached out to touch it, his watch dipped into the egg. Panicked, Angel tried to pull it out, but as he did, a force gripped onto it, coming out of the egg along with his watch. And now, he’s stuck with someone who seems like a human, but isn’t really at all. That night, he brought them home, hiding them from his sisters, and now he’s trying to figure out what to do with them. Does he keep them in his apartment above the bakery? Bring them back to their egg? Turn them in to the authorities? While he considers the options, Angel also finds himself growing fond of the egg-person. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if they stayed...
