Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM)!
Before John Was a Jazz Giant: A Song of John Coltrane
Author - Carole Boston Weatherford
Illustrator - Sean Qualls
Young John Coltrane was all ears. And there was a lot to hear growing up in the South in the 1930s: preachers praying, music on the radio, the bustling of the household. These vivid noises shaped John's own sound as a musician. Carole Boston Weatherford and Sean Qualls have composed an amazingly rich hymn to the childhood of jazz legend John Coltrane.

GOWANUS NIGHT HERON CASE STUDY: The God Box #1 (acrylic, paper, newspaper, pencil, and mirror paper) The inspiration behind the God Box is a literal interpretation of the idea that we were created in the image of God. If this is true, then God may appear different to everyone. The God Box is a tool of self reflection, so that one may see themselves when contemplating the existence/nature of God. Sean Quall's work explores unknown, obscure and forgotten people/moments from history and mythology, combined with his love of vintage advertising graphics. His work also examines our relationship to perfectionism and our self concept. With his recent geometric paintings, Sean hopes to reveal how idiosyncrasies and imperfections make people and things more attractive, not less. Sean is also a highly sought-after illustrator and has created art for books by Spike Lee, Toni Morrison and Zindzi Mandela to name a few. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY where on occasion you can also find him djing or sharing his work with the community. SeanQualls.com https://www.instagram.com/sean_qualls/ [email protected] All Case Study artist boxes are available to purchase for $150 at the Gowanus Open Studios event. Or email [email protected] for availability and sales info.

Loving v. Virginia was the landmark civil rights decision by the United States Supreme Court that invalidated laws preventing inter-racial marriage. Virginia had strict anti-miscegenation laws which prohibited marriage between 'whites' and 'coloreds'. The couple who brought these charges to the court was Mildred and Richard Loving—a black woman and her white husband—who were sentenced to a year in prison for marrying each other. The Supreme Court overturned the Lovings' convictions in a unanimous decision on June 12, 1967, now colloquially known as "Loving Day".
The case has been receiving renewed attention thanks to a number of recent works. From Chronical Books, Loving V. Virginia by Patricia Hruby Powell and illustrated by Shadra Strickland is a gorgeous "documentary novel" based on the case. For younger readers, there’s The Case for Loving by Selina Alko with illustrations by the author and Sean Qualls, available from Scholastic Books. Finally, in theaters now, Loving directed by Jeff Nichols, starring Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, who is Oscar-nominated this year for her performance.

📚15 Picture Books for Mother’s Day
My little dark baby,
My little earth-thing,
My little love-one,
What shall I sing
For your lullaby?
— Langston Hughes, Lullaby (For a Black Mother)
Esteemed poet, Langston Hughes, penned poems and books—for children and adults—that covered various subjects that explore Black life. Sunday, May 9th is Mother’s Day, and Hughes “celebrates the love between an African American mother and her baby” in a beautiful picture book illustrated by Sean Qualls. In their review, Publishers Weekly expresses that the book is, “A quiet but welcome introduction to the writer’s work for the very young.” What a lovely gift this will make for anyone looking for books about a mother’s love, poems by Hughes, or calming nighttime reads. Included on our Mother’s Day book list are also books about nanas and grandmas, new and foster moms, mamas who affirm, dream, and do so much more.
