Seahorses are notoriously poor swimmers but have prehensile tails so imagine how that would translate to merfolk. Seahorse mer clinging onto their faster and more agile mer s/o who just tows them through the water 😂

I finally ordered an iPad air5 and 2nd. Gen Apple Pencil (for a great deal). It will arrive next month, so expect an uptick in art as I practice and create more art!

Seahorse pendant, the pouch is baroque pearl. After a lovely courtship ceremony, females deposit eggs to male seahorses' pouches and males carry the eggs and give birth.

Happy May Day, and the now beginning Mermay as well! Remember this concept of a seahorse merson I showed?

I decided to go on ahead and try to get a bit of a feel for how a seahorse merson would work! Perhaps a bit less awkward than just the option above..

In an upright pose the "seahorse head" is twisted far back like so, but an actual more natural pose for them would be somewhat or fully bent. It looks more natural in their environment, I swear!

Similarly to how seahorses are some of the only fish that have necks and can bend them, seahorse merfolk would be among the only ones who can actually sit like a human. Scandalous!

Hmm, still workshopping this a bit. I'm not sure if this is too much of a "normal" mermaid or still a bit too "strange"?

As an excuse to do an art study, here's my little addition to MerMay for 2024.

If you'd like a little story to go with it; imagine a young human woman that fell into the ocean from a ferry in the dead of night. A sea witch finds her nearly dead, and taking pity, turns her into a mermaid to save her life. Unfortunately the change is permanent. Also unfortunate- she has the misfortune of being thalassophobic while now having to live IN the ocean. She begs the sea witch to make her into "something that scares everything that scares HER" and so the witch turns her into a leviathan.

Protected against the dangers of the ocean, but isolated from fellow mer due to fear and ignorance of their culture, the newly changed leviathan finds herself lonely and morose on the outskirts of civilization.... until she comes across a little sea horse mer.

Well, Mermay is almost done buuut, Aquatic batfam is always lovely. So which would you be fine hearing me ramble about-slash-work on the Oneshots lol

Eel Mer-   Eeels. Long wriggly friends. Now with apposable thumbs! And Bruce's growing adoption problem- and a slight family curse but shhh.

Merfolk-   I mean, fish! A mixture of modern and fantasy with the merfolk of Gotham waters being cryptids compared to the rest of the seas. The bats think it's hilarious.

Octopus Mer-   Octopi are fun. And you ever see the videos of octopus continuously escaping their tanks? Imagine if the octopi were vigilantes with weapons. Yeaah...

Crabtaur-  Lazarus crabs? Lazarus crabs! And a curse to them all that they have to work around in their day to day lives.

Nudibranch-   Sea Slugs? Indeed. And a lot of them poisonous and using the poisons in their work- along with messing with each other.

Mershark-   Sharks! Includes Flashpoint-esque Thomas being a murder grandpa and past AlfredxMarthaxThomas, along with Bruce being less murderous

Kraken-   Squids. Think giant merfolk but well, giant squids. Fantasy-esque AU with Gotham being the largest population of pirates & crime on the seas.

Sea Dragon- Sea serpents mixed with seahorses and a bit more. Includes the kids being bio-kids via blood ritual and a couple galas. Also some shapeshifting.

Slade Wilson AU

So I have an Omegaverse AU that I’m working on for a bunch of DC characters. I also have an AU where Slade is an Atlantean, and I decided to combine them, so Slade is now an Omega Atlantean. The baby is Grant.

How fast does Seahorse Holly move in water? Seahorses are slow swimmers because they have a small swimming tail fin. Does she move fast because of fantasy/cartoon logic or slow because of realistic logic?

Also, if Cuphead and Holly are dating in the mermaid au. A Seahorse couple would wrap around each other's tails so they don't lose each other in the ocean. Can you make art of Holly and Cuphead wrapping their tails around each other's? It's okay if you don't want to make this art.

Yeah realistic logic. Not a big fan of cartoon logic explanations. She’s a very slow swimmer unfortunately. (Fun fact seahorses are among the slowest fish in the ocean) She tries her best when they need to travel. Using her hands and arms to help propel if she needs the boost. But it’s pretty tiring trying to keep up with everyone. So Cuphead usually offers to carry her or help her out if she needs it.

Yes, this is Colly. And they’re actually dating. Because I ship those two so cussing hard. I read that about seahorses when doing research for this AU. She curls her tail when she’s asleep/cuddling as to not accidentally float away. But she also curls her tail around Cup’s when she’s flirting with him or just near him. She’s kinda embarrassed about it but Cup finds it adorable.

And I don’t mind art requests! Especially for my AUs!!

Worldbuilding ideas for species-based merfolk.

Porcupinefish, lionfish and other spiky fish tend to wear thick clothes or put soft caps on their spikes in order to not harm anyone.

Instead of beating the dead seahorse that is “ooh human gender roles but reversed”, syngnathids have misogyny and toxic masculinity similar to humans, but because of their different reproductive systems, there’s added layers to it that humans wouldn’t have.

Instead of the predators being ostracized, it’s the poisonous fish. (because realistically, most fish are either carnivores or omnivores)

The larger shark merfolk are a nomadic people because big sharks can’t stop moving or they’ll drown. Not saying that they’ll literally die, but they prefer to be on the move.

Myth accurate Greek sirens (the bird ones) are like the seagulls of the magical ocean world. They dive down and steal your food when you’re not looking and if you fight them on it, they’ll get all their little birdie buddies to dive bomb you on sight.

Deep sea fish merfolk are the fae.

At some point down the line, I'm hoping to write three short stories which take place in my own universe of merfolk, essentially creating what could be described as a Mer Anthology. So I wanted to officially introduce the main characters of the first story in that collection!

This story, tentatively titled "Stronger than Blood," takes place in the Gulf of Mexico and focuses on the unexpected familial relationship that develops between Mip and Ardyn. Mip is a young seahorse mer whose coloration mimics that of the blue ringed octopus, a detail she uses (or tries to) in order to fool predators into thinking she’s poisonous. She's a poor swimmer and somewhat small for her age, which she presumes are the reasons why her family abandoned her. Mip's three moods generally include shy, nervous, and scared - but she can be incredibly brave when the situation calls for it. Prove to her that you're trustworthy and you might catch a glimpse of her sweet side. Oelardyn (or Ardyn for short) is a predatory mer who shares similarities to the spotted ragged-tooth shark. The son of a fierce mer-eater, Ardyn rejected his father's ways and broke ties in an effort to lead a different life. Because of this, he tries to not come off as intimidating or scary to smaller mers and tends to remedy his frightening appearance by joking around, but he's very observant and often notices more than he lets on. All things considered, Ardyn is a pretty chill guy. Yet some aspects of his predatory instincts frighten him more than he's willing to admit...

I don't know exactly when this story (or the others) will make their way onto paper, but I plan to post them online whenever that time comes. I'm certainly looking forward to it! In the meantime, thanks for reading about my fish kids :>

5. What's your controversial marine biology take? Oh, have I been talking about my controversial takes these past few days! Ocean sunfish.... beautiful, so silly but so beautiful.

To name another thing, perhaps this is moreso something that grinds my gears rather than a controversial take but I haaaaate when people say that male seahorses get pregnant. It's what it looks like but it's not the case!!! He just has a pouch where the egg are deposited for safekeeping, it's like mouthbrooding but with a designated pouch!! He does not produce the eggs and all the nutrition the eggs receive was never from him!!! Perhaps I get too hung up on these aquatic animal technicalities, but it still makes me needlessly annoyed whenever in fiction there's like, seahorses, and they imply that the process of seahorse baby development is the exact same as human baby development but.... backwards for sexes..?
