Eating a Big Mac® while gazing at Big Mountains is an experience that millions of Americans can relate to. But little do we ask ourselves, which McDonald's restaurants have the biggest, baddest mountain backdrop?

So I set out to answer this question, using rut, a topographic metric that does particularly well at identifying cities with badass mountain backdrops. (For more info, check out this Mercury News article by John Metcalfe, or my research paper)

Roughly speaking, this is how rut works:

The higher the mountains rise above a restaurant, the more impressive they appear, and the greater the rut.

The more steeply the mountains rise above a restaurant, the more impressive they appear, and the greater the rut.

Here's a tier list that shows the rut of the ruttiest McDonald's restaurant in various cities. The cutoffs are rather arbitrary, so please don't poison me with a Grimace Shake if your city doesn't get the tier you like :)

Note: a rut of X doesn't mean the surrounding mountains rise a height of X above the restaurant. Instead, a rut of X means that a restaurant's mountain backdrop is as impressive as a restaurant at the base of a vertical cliff of height X. The less steeply the surrounding mountains rise above the restaurant, the lower the rut.

Also note: rut only considers rise above surroundings (relative height differences and angle of elevation). it does not consider absolute elevation, nor the "aesthetics" of a mountain, nor visibility (or lack thereof) due to weather or smog.

A girl was feeling really nostalgic abt the fact The Stardust Scouts (my magic girl ocs) are nearing 10 years old at this point… so I felt like drawing their oldest designs faithfully + then drawing their current ones beside them :)

I little bit more about each of them in order:

Savannah started off as much shorter, she was the shortest of the group iirc. I decided to make her the tallest one instead after thinking abt how i wanted her to not only be fat but take up a lot of space. She’s the “main” protagonist of the story (in my mind at least, as it stands SDS is more of an ensemble cast) so I wanted to challenge conventions by making my smart leader you root for fat and completely ok with that. Savannah doesn’t have time for fatphobia she has 3 college essays to write before an alien attacks the city

I am really glad I changed Penny’s color scheme over the years, I don’t like how the red hair and purple sweater look together at all. Their style had also grown a lot more brash and eclectic. I think he started as a shy type? You can definitely see it in the original drawings body language. Unbelievable, she is a Mabel Pines crafter extraordinaire at heart and that’s final

Tabitha “congrats on the transition” Brooks has just been slowly shifting further and further toward his current butch look for forever and it rocks. I distinctly remember making SDS originally with the intent of “only having girls so no one tried to ship them with a boy” and I was a little stubborn on that point for a while… but Tabitha said nuts to that and decided otherwise. I honestly think of her original design as being what she looked like as a teen these days, before cutting off all that hair and running off to he/her lesbian all over the place.

Wendy’s always been an interesting struggle, because while she and Savannah have both been a learning exercise in getting black & textured hair right, Wendy specifically loves fashion and styling her hair in different ways every other time I draw her. Her current braided hair is what I default to but I’ve also wrapped it up in buns and given her bantu knots too. Also made it more obvious she dyes her hair, glad I moved away from cheese yellow blonde lol

Olivia! Olivia Olivia Olivia…. Ze has definitely won the award for most dramatic change between the old design & now. I make it no secret ze used to be a Tak from invader zim expy, and I still carry those roots with me as I refine zer look. The blonde hair and the orange signature color are both very recent developments, I used to be so attached to Olivia staying purple that I was detrimentally keeping 2 characters purple instead of letting Olivia have a unique place among the group. Now the only thing that’ll make it obvious ze was ever Tak adjacent is the mole under zer eye & a lot of the backstory I have cooking

Just realized that the 50th anniversary of the Wounded Knee Occupation started like a week ago. (Feb 27 - May 8, 1973) For 71 days, 200 Oglala Sioux and AIM activists occupied the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in opposition to the corruption of tribal chairman Richard Wilson and centuries of failure by the US Government to honor treaties with native peoples. The town would be besieged by federal forces (US Marshals, FBI, SD National Guard) and GOON (a paramilitary force run by Richard Wilson). 5 people were killed, and 16 wounded during the siege. On May 5, an agreement was reached between leaders of the occupiers and the feds. By May 8, the town had been evacuated, and the US Government seized control. The occupation saw significant public support and helped bring light to issues facing indigenous peoples within the US. Issues they continue to face and fight to this day, 50 years later. (For example, there are around 4200 to 5700 unsolved cases involving murdered or missing indigenous women, as of 2021)

does shouto have any feelings for reader?

yes! he does! they aren’t anything super serious—like, he isn’t heartbroken over her or pining over her or in some sort of desperate love with her, but he absolutely feels romantic + sexual attraction toward her.

would he ever act on it?

he definitely does, although he isn’t as forward (or stark) as touya is. shouto is almost, in a way, subtly manipulative with his affections; kinda tricks reader into thinking it’s something she wants or is doing (whereas touya just takes without asking in any way at all, without any buttering up, melting n softening, or finessing. to touya, it is more fun to take by force and watch her face screw up in disgust or hear that indignant squeal that catches in her throat, sticky and squeaky). shouto mostly steals little kisses and soft touches—small things that he’s sure natsuo won’t necessarily miss.

how would natsuo + touya react?

natsuo doesn’t mind as long as it stays limited to just sweet lil kisses and cute lil touches (hand-holding, hugging, sitting on his lap, cuddling, walking arm n arm); fairly innocent stuff. if shouto wants to take it any further than that, he knows he needs to get natsuo’s explicit permission, and that’s fine with him. he definitely feels guilty wanting any more than what he already takes—both for his brother (he knows how much natsuo loves reader/how possessive he is over her, and although shouto knows about 80% of the time natsuo will share with him if he asks, he doesn’t want to overstep any boundaries or upset his brother, or take advantage of the doting and love natsuo has for shouto being the baby of the family and all that), and for reader (he doesn’t like putting her in that position and using her like a Todoroki Toy just passed around between the three of them)—so it’s very rare that he’ll push natsuo for anything other than hugs n kisses, but it does happen on seldom occasion. in those instances, he usually likes to frame it as something along the lines of comfort; touya was especially mean today, and poor little reader is so upset, and her sweet Daddy is so busy and nowhere to be found, and please, nii-san? let me make her feel better, let me take her mind off of it, yeah? promise i’ll be real gentle <3 (shouto likes to tell himself that he isn’t as scummy as his older brothers, but he is, just in a more manipulative and less straightforward way). touya, on the other hand, fucking hates that shouto’s allowed to touch her at all. he can’t wrap his head around why natsuo permits such a thing in the first place; it’s entirely inconceivable to him. the thought doesn’t only inspire sharp flashes of scalding anger, but a pervasive, inexplicable, and unfamiliar feeling of being upset, too, which is even more irritating, since touya can’t figure out—or, more appropriately, won’t admit to—why he’s feeling such a way, why shouto in particular makes him feel in such a way (it’s because touya cannot handle being second to shouto, ever, a feeling that stems from being thought of as inferior to him as a child—thus, he now feels as if he needs to beat him in every and all aspects of life to prove that he is worthy, that he is better).

as mentioned i have a rnis fic which is VERY very loosely based on the concept from this post (x) ft background ryusae lsjdffsd cause i apparently can't write a fic without them

also if ur a fan of the mall au (x) i'm currently posting, u will be thrilled to know that i am neck-deep in part 2 which will feature sendou (some ryusaesen but endgame aikusenbarou), charles (one-sided pining for shidou + endgame niko/charles), isagi (kaisagi and some bachisagi), and karasu (tabieita fake dating flavor) !!!!

Love the thought of c!Peng and Azure also pining for the c!shadowpeach, but could you imagine c!Macaque trying to fix his relationship with the c!brotherhood in the canon universe after all the shenanigans gets resolved (Jade Emperor Azure etc.)and ending up the closest to Azure because they have more similarities than they initially thought. And he goes to sundown universe and just absolutely blasts SD!Azure's ear off about all these cool things he learned and how Azure would probably like some of them. And just SD!Azure just being so confused, SD!Peng ans SD!Wukong being jealous, C!Wukong proud Mac is coming out of his shell and SD!Mac just being shocked at how casually this version of him is being playful towards SD!Azure.

In addition, C!Mac is, unlike SD!Mac, aware that C!Peng HAD a crush on him (Peng doesn't anymore) , so he would actively make Wukong jealous while C!Peng being better besties now helps him out. So C!Mac assumed it's the same in this universe, that SD!Peng no longer has a crush on SD!Mac and playfully flirts with him to make C!Wukong mad but because this Peng still does actually have a crush on him, it's just all around chaos for everyone. And C!Mac doesn't even know it.

OOOOO THAT IS FUN!! Love the idea of c! Macaque and c!Azure being besties and that just shocks everyone considering the start of their relationship was really just non existent
