yes I know what Apollo and Artemis did to Niobe was wrong but the sculpture Latona and Her Children, Apollo and Diana by William Henry Rinehart is so cute that I have to forgive them for what have they done 🥹

Just thought about how if we go by mythological accuracy, Apollo and Diana are never babies at the same time. Diana has to grow up quickly to help her mother deliver Apollo. And after that Apollo has to grow up to fight Python.
Yet in so many paintings and sculptures they're portrayed as newborns resting quietly next to Latona or as toddlers playing with each other. It's as if the artists tried to give her a moment of normalcy.

"Leto, sweet as the dusk air,
sings to her children.
Precocious things, they coo
back to her: voices of love.
Daughter of Light,
and mother as well to light,
may virtuous Leto bless us
with peace and tenderness."

Latona’s Fountain
Latona’s fountain was inspired by The Metamorphoses by Ovide. It illustrates the story of Latona, the mother of Apollo and Diana, protecting her children from the insults of the peasants of Lycia and pleading with Jupiter to avenge her. The god obliges by turning the inhabitants of Lycia into frogs and lizards. (Built by Marsy Brothers and Jules Hardouin-Mansart between 1668 and 1689)

Dying Niobid
The dying Niobid represents one of Niobe’s seven daughters, struck by the gods’ fatal arrows, as she attempts to remove the dart from her back.
It is an original Greek statue, likely dating back to the 5th century and brought to Rome under Augustus. It was found in 1906, near the Horti Sallustiani.
In Book the Sixth of his “Metamorphoses”, ends the story of how Niobe’s seven sons and seven daughters were killed by Phoebus and Diana by order of their mother, Latona. Niobe had offended her by boasting of her fourteen children, and Latona sent her own two to take her revenge.

The Latona Fountain in the Gardens of Versailles
Photos by Charles Reeza, October 2021
The fountain illustrates a story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Latona, mother of Apollo and Diana and mistress of Jupiter, was forced to wander the earth due to the jealousy of her rival Juno. One day, after arriving at the border of Lycia in present-day Turkey, she approached a pool in a marsh to drink the water. Local peasants prevented her and her children from quenching their thirst. In her fury, she transformed them into frogs. The sculptures on the fountain were executed by the Marsy brothers, Gaspard and Balthazar, from 1669 to 1670.

Nude Diana The Hunter Goddess Popular Bronze Sculpture Statue Figure Figurine Nr Standing Tall And Nude This Bronze Sculpture Of Diana The Hunter Was Handmade And Casted Using The Lost Wax Method. She Poses With Her Small Breasts Exposed As She Releases Her Bow. You See The Outline Of Her Muscles And Stomach As She Leans Back While Unleashing Her Arrow. Standing On Her Toes She Balances Herself, Bringing Detail To Her Legs, As She Looks Straight Ahead At Her Target. Her Buttocks Are Tight And Firm, Her Body Is Slender And Natural. You See Her Muscles In Her Back And Her Arms As She Shoots Her Bow. Her Hair Is Wavy But And Flows Back In The Wild Winds Of The Forest. At Her Feet Are Two Hunting Dogs. This Sculpture Was Cast Using The Lost Wax Method And Is Mounted On A Marble Base.Diana The Hunter Came From Myths Both From Italy And Greece. Most Of The Myths Had Started In Italy But Were Influenced Quickly By Greece. It Is Hard To Pinpoint Information On Diana The Hunter As She Was Also Known As Diana Nemorensis And Artemis. Below Is A Short Myth About Diana The Hunter Diana Was An Ancient Italian Goddess Of Woodland. In Capua And In Aricia, Localities Near Rome, There Are Still Shrines Dedicated To The Old Italian Goddess. Her Shrine In Aricia Was On The Shores Of The Lake Nemi. For That Reason, She Was Named Diana Nemorensis, Diana Of The Woods. The Rites Dedicated To Her Were Particularly Brutal. Human Sacrifices Were Offered To The Indigenous Goddess. Diana'S Priest Was An Escaped Slave. Every New Priest Had To Kill Their Predecessors To Obtain Their Offices. At Capua, People Believed That The Preservation Of The City Depended On The Fate Of A Long-Lived Hind Sacred To The Goddess. As The Result Of The Influence Of The Greek Colonies In Southern Italy Around The Sixth Century Bc, Diana Became Identified With The Greek Goddess Of Woodland Artemis Acquiring The Attributes Of This Latter. For The Greeks, Artemis Was Also The Personification Of The Moon And Her Twin Brother Apollo Was Associated With The Sun. Her Father And Mother Were Jupiter And Latona. Diana Believed Her Virgin Body Was Very Sacred And Not For A Male'S Eyes. One Day The Hunter, Actaeon, Was Wandering Around And Stumbled Upon Diana Bathing. Diana Became So Angry; She Turned Actaeon Into A Stag. Now He Was Unable To Speak, And So No One Would Ever Hear About Diana'S Naked Body. Actaeon Was Then Killed By His Own Hunting Dogs.
