Every year the season starts on King’s Day and goes until Fat Tuesday. King’s Day is always on January 6th, but the date of Fat Tuesday fluctuates. Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday which is always 47 days before Easter. So, sometimes the Mardi Gras season goes all the way into March! Displayed here are 22 out of the 24 original sandstone columns that made up the east portico of the capitol back in 1826. They were the backdrop of presidential inaugurations from 1829 through 1957.
