These sandstone corinthian columns were a part of the U.S. Capitol building between 1826 and 1962, when they were replaced by more durable marble columns. Displayed here are 22 out of the 24 original sandstone columns that made up the east portico of the capitol back in 1826. They were the backdrop of presidential inaugurations from 1829 through 1957.
