Hard to remember fully, but if I recall Tighnari, Cyno, Kaveh and I were very drunk. I vividly remember the nasty hangover the morning after. I believe Cyno was the one that initially suggested Truth or Dare but I do not remember which one was the one to dare him to kiss me specifically… my bet is on Cyno truthfully but I’m not certain. It was immature and stupid, but we were all very drunk so it sounded like a good idea at the time.

Trauma, Spite, and Identity.

This is no means a professional's diagnosis nor is it intended to be seen as anything but my own thoughts on an extremely misunderstood and vilified disorder, and how it could be presented in a fantasy universe.

DID manifests in many different ways. I'm not here to get into the medical details or debate anything about it, merely discuss the parts that could correlate to Lucanis' behavior.

Most people/systems with DID have it due to extreme trauma that the brain couldn't handle, and needed to break up into fragments, so to speak. For Lucanis, Spite would serve as the "trauma holder" of the two, keeping most events from the Ossuary to itself. Lucanis remembers bits and pieces, and it lends to Spite's irritation and increased frustration because he doesn't remember fully, nor does he fully realize they are out of the Ossuary. It takes a long time to come out of survival mode, especially after a year of deliberate torture.

In addition, Spite will also come to be the keeper of Lucanis' older, more troubled memories. The unmitigated brutality and harsh reality of being raised by Catarina Dellamorte, and the expectations put on his shoulders to be the next First Talon. This could lend to the difference in behavior Lucanis exhibits when compared to what he did and said in Wigmaker, and how he was mentioned in The Wake short story as well. His brain simply put the worst of his trauma elsewhere, and now the 'elsewhere' is being ignored, and it's cascading into a bad experience for both them since there's no communication.

It's a lot to process at once, on top of needing to kill a few gods. And especially so for Spite itself as it was a spirit forced into this situation, forced to take in Lucanis' emotion and memories and try to sort through it all, while they both try to make it out of the Ossuary. It's also why I like to write Spite growing more, too. Learning its own likes and dislikes alongside Lucanis as they learn how to navigate their wounds, and slowly heal.
