not to start shit but. tell me you didn't understand princess jellyfish without telling me you didn't understand princess jellyfish
#idk idk something about the lines we draw to divide women being ultimately useless as they degrade both sides#something something bridging gaps between people with different interests#something something literal actual sisterhood and solidarity between women#i'm never one to defend tiktok i'm not even on there and it surprises me that princess jellyfish is being brought up#but like. what is this supposed to mean. to 'tiktokify' something#girlboss narrative what hello? what? you're throwing words at me and i don't know what they mean#but it's hilarious that this post comes off as something the sisterhood would have posted before all their character development#because this is a story about empowerment not through appearance- but that inner change is what beauty is made of#the development tsumiki and the other members of the sisterhood get is not that now they dress well#but that their often self-imposed isolation is not an antidote to os being ostracized in high school and having social anxiety#and that they've dehumanized other women in the process of defending themselves#and it's not that they have to change who they are of their interests but that they full accept themselves and can therefore#be comfort with who they are#and better navigate the world. and form friendships . and human connection and FUCK#like what are you talking about#sorry i know no one here follows me for princess jellyfish takes but that's what we're gonna get today#i think when you have a fandom / readership as small as pj (in the west at least) every bad take hits that much harder lmao#anyway. kuranosuke princess rights. we are all princesses. etc etc#princess jellyfish#kuragehime#screeds#screeds fR FR#txt#i didn't want to tag this person or show their name bc it ain't personal i just want to address takes like these .#“girl's girls are toxic” “not like other girls are toxic” what if we were all princesses idk. what if we loved each other

ok after some back and forth i've decided to ignore the wiki and the viz translations because "Borksen" and "Bork" make me feel like i'm talking to a ~doggo~ millennial which is lame, while Volksen sounds like Volkswagen which is drippy as hell. and when it comes to translations B and V love to be interchangeable just as much as L and R.... so Volkswagen its is. i mean Volksen. wait fuck-
#the tag will be ->#volksen#<- fr future reference#(well for me anyway i cant change what the rest of the world does)#cant wait to watch as many video recaps of this chapter as possible and watch as all pronounce it differently#hxh 407#txt#screeds#hunter x hunter#hxh

‘anne boleyn is so sanctified now that creators are afraid to portray her negatively, that’s why we’ve never gotten a mary tudor-centered biopic’, erm...ok...i feel like you are all real quick to forget that TOBG was literally only fifteen years ago.
#fifteen years is not that long...?#like don't get me wrong i am so relieved that outside of the hypersexualized and hateful blip that was tsp#so much progress has been made in her portrayals but like...we ARE still in the 21st cent. be fr#anyway i sincerely do not believe that is the reason. but. lol#nice try?#b for effort#for perspective; ives' reissue of L&DAB was 2004#so in some sense it is a steps forward and steps back thing#unfortunately a film is actually going to be more impactful than an academic biography like...thems the breaks of pop culture#and also s2 of tudors was 2009 ofc which was a better portrayal for certain but had its shortcomings too#also that online screed i read that was like 'how dare ANYONE EVER imply that ANYONE still has a negative opinion of AB...'#im going to chalk that up to things being relative i guess#but they are vastly underestimating the length of (pop) cultur(al) memory. vastly.

People are annoying and suffer from not knowing how to write properly and from not knowing how cartoons are made so go “well I would have changed THESE parts of what’s already a cohesive narrative I don’t get the point of and THEN it would have been good!” about both SU and other media. This sort of snotty and annoying refusal to engage with a text then became the defining way to interact with media going forward.
Also the backlash started right around the time where the right wing and such sentiment was taking over in droves globally and online. The cultivation of “irony” and “cringe” def had an outsized influence on queer people and many internalized it so refused to extend grace to a queer-positive, progressive, queer-created show with a narrative about restorative justice and instead devolved into the crowd of dipshit chuds also hating on the show for being [slurs].
It’s aggravating, what’s happened. And from my POV as a Black queer person who understands narrative and what Sugar and company were saying and also knows how cartoons are made, the way people went and go extra ham talking about real life issues wrt this show, allegedly to HELP me/people like me, I think it sucks and I refuse to give people who behave this way the time of day or my attention.
speaking as a fan of both, why do steven universe fans talk about it like it’s miraculous ladybug. steven universe was actually good
#the backlash has started happening to THE OWL HOUSE TOO#and yet! people are never fucking behaving this way about say gravity falls#which while a fine enough show constantly made the pastiche of Black culture a funnie Joak#but like yeah so many ppl still are obsessed with gf despite its flaws and other shows creates by Dudes (TM)#but dont extend the same grace to any of the three prominent nb/woman/trans masc ppl in major cartoons rn#annoys the PEE PEE outta me#steven universe#su#’media critical’ type thinking was the seminal tragedy of hobbyist media spaces fr#also if anyone wishes to disagree with me or say ‘i agree but [opposite of what i said]’: save it!#i was THERE in person! im the person people concern trolled about in their weirdo screeds calling RS a fash

Wow, y’all
I’m pretty sure I just unfollowed a CIA psyop with a leftist/progressive mask on
I mean just wow look at this screed
There is so much blatant misinformation in here it would take me DAYS and like a hundred links to show how nearly every single point in here has been debunked or is referencing a whole OTHER piece of corporate propaganda
—-
Oh and while I’m at it there’s a typo in one of these sentences let me fix it for you:
“The **USA’s** goals are regional (world) domination through trade and force.”
There you go 👍😎👍 have a nice day💕
#for real y’all be careful out there because there are some blogs out there wearing Progressive masks that are seriously sus
# we as Progressives don’t war-monger, knock it off
oh and in case anybody was wondering:
full disclosure the second graphic is several years old so the numbers are different so here’s this:
The USA is currently squatting in 85 countries
Eighty. Five.
China has bases in *drumroll* six
Six.
*saying with the same tone of voice you use when you ask your pet “Who’s A Good Dog”*
Who’s attempting global domination? Oh right it’s us!👍😁👍
Now I’m not trying to woobify ANYbody because I don’t think there’s a single country on the planet with completely clean fingers but if you want to see something interesting internet-search (I will not use the G-word they suck) the number of unhoused people in the USA and then search China’s Poverty Alleviation or here’s a link from a US American think tank:
Interesting
Now, I’m not one of those crazies that’s like “y’all need to learn Mandarin and start watching Wuxia full time fr yolo” because I lived through that kind of sh*t in the 80s when every. damn. body. was yelling about “Japan iS TakiNg OveR” and nothing happened.
But DO have some damn discernment when you’re taking in corporate media ffs
(whispers) but Wuxia IS pretty awesome you should check it out
and ps, why tf is everyone so quick to jump on debunking posts with Well You’re Obviously Being Paid by Villified Country so I’m not even gonna listen
but those same folks swallow corporate media whole without a single doubt
Who is paying for that piece on CNN or MSNBC that everybody else is reblogging willy-nilly that’s what * I * wanna know
#sh*t nobody’s gonna bother reading but you should#the so-called left now is so far to center they’re basically purple#if you want some real laughs lightly scratch the surface and see how quick they are to attack feminists it’s a hoot😄#waves at the CIA omg HI!!! 👋#zero-note special

Also, and I hate to tie this back to my anti-capitalist screed, a great deal of the issue people have with onboarding into a new system from DnD (especially when they force the system to do things it was never designed to do) is the marketing and univerality of the game. Once upon a time, DnD was THE fantasy RPG. But that time came and went fairly quickly because, much like how a large portion of early psychology was a bunch of people backing up "Fuck Sigmund Freud" with a source, people wanted their games and tables to do different, much better things, and also "Fuck TSR" and now "Fuck WOTC."
Even the campaign that would eventually become Critical Role started out as Pathfinder 1e, then switched to DnD 5e for the stream bc it's "more accessible." And Pathfinder 1e is essentially better DnD 3.5e, which is often billed as inaccessible to beginners bc of All The Math, but was also the primary mode DnD stayed in for the majority of its existence. The real crazy shit that required a masters in algebra was Advanced DnD 2e, which is what Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 were based on, which if you'll recall are two of the most widely beloved and historically significant video game RPGs ever. And just like with Baldur's Gate 3 and 5e, if you learn BG 1 or 2, you can absolutely play ADnD2e.
You will find the blood of DnD in basically every RPG, table or video game, simply by virtue of how universal it is. And because of this universality and its marketing as THE game to play, people feel like 5e is the only game they need to learn, and not even that well.
The problem isn't necessarily that people don't want to engage with the tactical systems or do new things, it's that DnD is such a fucking behemoth in the culture that everyone, regardless of if they'd be better off with something rules-light and roleplay oriented or something more akin to a wargame, has to engage with it on some level.
And at that point, what would somebody rather spend their money on? A universally recognized system that's easy to find people who know about and onboard those that don't, or something you'll probably like more, that's harder to find people for and thus harder to get into?
It's tough, fr. But on some level we have to understand that simply because of how big DnD is, people who would be better off learning it better or doing another game simply won't because they can't afford more than one game.
I think an important part of the "D&D is easy to learn" argument is that a lot of those people don't actually know how to play D&D. They know they need to roll a d20 and add some numbers and sometimes they need to roll another type of die for damage. A part of it is the culture of basically fucking around and letting the GM sort it out. Players don't actually feel the need to learn the rules.
Now I don't think the above actually counts as knowing the rules. D&D is a relatively crunchy game that actually rewards system mastery and actually learning how to play D&D well, as in to make mechanically informed tactical decisions and utilizing the mechanics to your advantage, is actually a skill that needs to be learned and cultivated. None of that is to say that you need to be a perfectly tuned CharOp machine to know how to play D&D. But to actually start to make the sorts of decisions D&D as a game rewards you kind of need to know the rules.
And like, a lot of people don't seem to know the rules. They know how to play D&D in the most abstract sense of knowing that they need to say things and sometimes the person scowling at them from behind the screen will ask them to roll a die. But that's hardly engaging with the mechanics of the game, like the actual game part.
And to paraphrase @prokopetz this also contributes to the impression that other games are hard to learn: because a lot of other games don't have the same culture of play of D&D so like instead of letting new players coast by with a shallow understanding of the rules and letting the GM do all the work, they ask players to start making mechanically informed decisions right away. Sure, it can suck for onboarding, but learning from your mistakes can often be a great way to learn.

very interesting that one side will go "let's see what the other side is saying" and just compile screenshots of what the other side is actually literally saying, whereas the other side will go "let's see what one side is saying" and then post a nonsense screed of absolute horseshit that they just made up because it sounded good at the exact moment they were typing. don quixote tilting at windmills fr

5M
When she unceremoniously loses her virginity to Romain in his apartment in Porte de Clichy that has no curtains, she begins to have second thoughts. She talks herself out of them.
It's Paris, she tells herself. This is what she wants and anyway, nothing will ever be exactly like what she dreams of in the lonely comfort of home, reading too many romance novels and saving photos of too many oversize, glittering diamonds on Pinterest. Reality is bound to be disappointing.
Who could fault her, though, for imagining. She spends her entire youth defying gravity while swathed in Swarovski crystals. The commentators, she knows, use the P-word when they describe her on-ice style and carriage. Princess. In Asia and certainly in Russia, they will caveat this description, live on the air no less, with "American," a shorthand jab that is meant to describe her lack of jumping prowess. "When compared to fourteen-year-olds who aren't injected full of banned substances," she will snap back at critics who cannot hear her, wishing it bothered her less.
She knows she is no princess, that she is as guilty as anyone else of constructing a glamorous reality when underneath the sparkle, there is a girl who has nagging pain in her left knee. Who is a little too obsessed with the caloric density of the frozen yogurt she had for dessert. Who finds her first bona fide sexual experience to be awkward and more than a bit painful. When she describes it in a single long screed of a text message to her sister, the only initial response is a delayed, "Oh boy."
But Paris. She has zero reservations about that. She has been before to compete, has known many skaters in the French federation besides Romain through the years, but has never spent her time like this. Sitting for hours with nothing more than a tiny espresso in a woven cafe chair facing the street, Romain's arm protectively across her shoulders. Craning her neck to see domed ceilings that she can never capture in a single photo. The plaster cast of a famous composer's elegant hand in a glass case. The Indian women in La Chapelle who speak neither English nor French, who thread her eyebrows with such precise force that she bleeds, but looks fabulous an hour later. The triumphant moment in Carrefour when she splutters to the cashier without even having to think about it, "Je suis desole, Madame. Je n'ai pas de monnaie."
She stays long enough to imagine a life here, an imagining that involves a tiny dog, same-day shopping for all of their groceries, and weekend trains to the Alps, their skates in tow.
And Romain? Well, her and Romain will work on things. Because that's what every couple does, right? Or maybe she will learn to be less hurt when he laughs, just a little and not exactly in a mean way, at the long list of things she has never heard of. (The French National Front. Verlan. Les Bobos. The Marquis de Sade. She hears the commentators in her head when he does this, "American" as an insult.) Or at the things she's excited about, that he thinks are corny. (Cafe Angelina, holding hands on the Ile Saint-Louis while the trees are blooming, the sparkle lights on the Eiffel Tower.)
Maybe she will figure out how to stop worrying and start enjoying this more. Because that's the problem with the sex, she reasons. She's just not relaxing. Not focusing. Hasn't she always heard this? From Coach, certainly. A script she could write herself. It's not exactly surprising that she's hearing it from Romain.
It is late. The middle of the night. When the sound of her phone vibrating on the dresser wakes her. Romain is asleep on his back, muscular arm thrown across his face, and she remembers all at once, as she does sometimes in flashes, why she's doing this.
She's surprised to see who the message is from. It's the first she or Romain has heard from him since they got to Paris. He is probably down some training hole, focusing on nothing but landing one of his quad combinations. She imagines him suddenly emerging from the fog after finally landing the thing to his satisfaction, opening his eyes, and realizing they are gone. Not that it bothers him much, clearly.
How's it going over there? All OK?
Yes/No, she types. Hesitates and instant before sending.
She starts when her phone starts vibrating with the phone call, its lit screen bright in the darkness of the room. She is out of bed and padding through the apartment in her bare feet an instant later. Heads for the door and slides out without locking it behind her, glides quickly down the spiral staircase, the one thing she loves about the place, to the entryway and out to the sidewalk. The night smells like car exhaust and she wonders if it's safe to be out here.
He does not even say hello. "It's 3:00 in the morning there, are you OK?"
"Oh God, yeah. I'm fine. Just awake."
A strange instant of silence, the kind that never seems to settle on them when they're face-to-face.
"So how's Paris?"
"Paris is perfect," she breathes, realizing that it's true.
"I bet," he says and she can barely hear it, the sound of disappointment in his voice.
"And Yale?"
"Well, Yale is fine."
"You're really selling it."
"It's just that... it's hard to train alone, I guess," he says.
This is when he tells her, in detail, about his solo practices, about how it's weird to have so little access to Coach, about how all of his quads have mostly held together since he moved. (Why would they not, she wants to scream at him. You are you. Of course your quads are fine.) About the minor injuries that are plaguing him. About the continuing saga of his pain-in-the-ass left blade.
She tries to be patient while he runs through all this, and when she finally responds, she is not quite prepared for how testy she sounds.
"So... Are you doing anything besides training? Do you have actual friends?"
He is taken aback, she can tell. And then she absolutely gets what she deserves.
"Of course I have friends. There is this girl..."
She will realize later, lying awake, that he has either called specifically to tell her this one piece of information. Or that he wanted to tell her everything but this one piece of information and see how it felt to keep it from her. She is furious at herself for being annoyed at both of these scenarios. He deserves this, she tells herself over and over. This is why he went. She worries herself into a restless half-sleep that disrupts Romain so completely that he leaves her in bed alone, murmuring in agitated French about her kicking. He spends the rest of the night on the couch. For this, at least, she is grateful.

So I post this and then realize that I haven't heard the latest Fr. Stephen Freeman podcast.
Nuts.
I pour out a screed of nastiness, and Fr. Freeman comes along and says much the same thing but in a nicer way. By being nice, he's even able to go further and compare the Modern American Protestant "God" to Zeus!
I am in awe.
Lord have mercy upon me.
Pick the worst character traits of a human Leader, and make him God:
Self Important ("Just" is just, because he said so.) Prone to Rage for the slightest affronts. Prideful (My way or the Highway.) Easily manipulated (Gifts and offerings, pageantry in his honor.) Masochistic (He hurts a part of himself because he's so pissed off.) Sadistic (He kills and hurts others because he gets so pissed off.) Vengeful (We didn't keep his "just" rules.) Forgetful (did he really forget that he hates you, or is he merely overlooking you because he has somehow been "satisfied" that you've been dealt with?)
Imagine the attributes of Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin, Putin - on Steroids.
Now, apply all those attributes to your deity - formulate a salvation theory around this monster, call the theological principle itself Soli Deo gloria. And Satan's work is done.
The World's glory is not God's Glory. The "man after God's own heart" was a shepherd. Christ, himself, was a carpenter.
None of the elites of the day recognized Christ when he appeared.
No wonder we have a world full of atheists, and growing…

Flight Discourse.
Arcane: Total Tumblr rejects: whether this means "soft autistic spacegay uwu", an #aesthete who types in size one right centered pale pink cursive, "HAHA SPACE IS SO COOL (neil degrasse tyson quote)", or one of those people who roleplays their DDLG my little pony OC sex scene on your unrelated post depends on which one you talk to. All, unfortunately, are completely disorganized and borderline ADHD because they can't get a single thing together... except the Celestial Council, ahahahahahahaha
Earth: Now about 5% Facebook grandmas, 85% people piggybacking off their recent Dom success, and 10% people who were there all along for some reason who still believe they are the ""underdogs"" and are better than former champions Ice/Lightning/Plague/Light used to be because they have 5% Facebook grandmas and about 100 people in the whole flight. Can get their flight together for Dom but not for festivals, which are consistently below-average.
Fire: While Earth has their 5% Facebook grandmas, Fire consists of approximately 100% Facebook soccer moms-- the ones who post Minion memes. Or wine memes. Literally the most whitebread flight in existence, between their forgettable userbase, forgettable lore (dragons...that breathe FIRE), zero attempts to capitalize on their Dominance potential unlike fellow small flights Earth and recently Water, and absolutely horrendous ""meme"" Flambebes. I'm sorry, it's terrible. It's Flight Rising minions. Face it.
Ice: Catty rich bitches and accent/G1 whales. The kind of people who have an entire boring lair of color-coordinated gem-gened G1 Wildclaws with expensive accents and the exact same silk/flowerfall outfit. The kind of people who snipe G1 auctions after they've been sold. The kind of people who would secretly take you off G.A.S.P. so they have a shot at a new release. The kind of people who try and buy Kickstarter items with real FR cash on the black market. The kind of people who use the black market. Unfortunately, all the money in the world can't buy a win against Water, who at that point had not won a non-fest conquest in about two years.
Light: Sort of a horrible combination of Earth and Ice: not as good as Dom as Earth, not quite so many whales as Ice, but with an ego big enough for both of them and then some. Despite hosting a large contingent of horrible people, will defend all of them unilaterally because.... they don't like being criticized, and after all all Light members are sweet and innocent rays of sunshine!! Only Light is allowed to criticize people, considering their moaning on both DR and AR-- most users of both are Light. Most of the Dom vultures have flocked off after their humiliating loss to Earth, which is some small consolation, but it only goes to show the kind of people who are left. Interesting but underutilized lore and a wholly boring aesthetic means that if you don't like what Dom there is left or gossiping about other Flights there isn't much for you.
Lightning: They attempt to portray themselves as the "lore flight", but it's all so one-dimensional and repetitive (and a wholesale Portal ripoff) that they really have nothing going for them whatsoever. Eyes? Boring yet still somehow obnoxious on any non-matching dragon. Aesthetic? It's sand. Dominance? Hahahahahaha. That's literally all I can think of, which if you look at every other flight in this post is not a good thing. At least be memorably terrible, not boring terrible.
Nature: Nature is the nice flight. The caring flight. The succulents-and-kitty-cats flight. Sorry, wrong post. They're actually backstabbing cliquey adolescents who try and put up a cutesy front to bring in new members, which fails anyways because they are second-least-attractive after Earth. "These dragons are nice and like plants. But actually THEY HAVE A DARK SIDE OOOOOH" but so does every single other flight except like whitebread Fire so ???? who gives a damn. When they aren't R or those people who vehemently hate R and write essays about all the things that are wrong with R, they are the people who post dashboard-long screeds on animal abuse because someone posted a joke about bear racing and maybe some rich people will capture bears and ride on their backs I guess, which in my book is about on par with Rhea/anti-Rheas. Also the bunny mod is in here.
Plague: Used to be THE dom tryhards, but after their wholly embarrassing and pitiful fall from grace is now about 50% edgelords and 50% the whiniest losers on the face of the planet. Edgelords - You know the drill. Whether it's just dumb "teehee my dragons like BLOOD and drink BLOOD from BABIES" edgelording or straight up like borderline-alert-the-authorities-incest-rape-sex slavery-regular slavery-abuse-whatever-edgelording, Plague has it. Crybabies - You know them. It almost seems like they joined Plague to be personally victimized by every move the admins make, and in fact they did. Non-Plague venue? No gory accents? Shared lore with Nature? God forbid, zombies? These are all personal attacks on Plague and are signs that the admins literally wish they and their families were all dead.
Shadow: Shadow is entirely Plague edgelords except if they were all age 7 and this was their first time on Teh Interwebz XD. Actually, if their first time on Teh Interwebz XD was reading horribly bad creepypasta at their slumber party, and this was their second time. Their lore either attempts to be scary but fails miserably (creepypasta XD) or attempts to be funny and also fails miserably, because Shadow Isn't Funny. It isn't. Ever. Of course it isn't, because all of its members are literal children or timetravelers from 2007, when things such as cookies and drooling and le dark side might have been still novel and sort of cute. It is no longer 2007, and/or most people are no longer children. Also, that introduction post that people use to recruit is stupid and I hate it. Terrible eyes also.
Water: Water still manages to slip under the radar hatewise, so I don't have a good unifying theme for this one. Give me a year when they are probably the new Dom flight and I'll have something. Instead, have a collection of things: Their April Fools "jokes" peaked two years ago and have been going from semifunny to baffling. People who say Tidepappy make me want to rip out my tongue through my sinuses. Their forums are about as fast as a dead sloth. The "oooh water is so mysterious" is so constant that they are actually not at all mysterious and are actually just annoying. Horrid eyes. No Foddart this Wavecrest. Has like two or three mods when other flights have zero mods despite being like 10x bigger. Anyone remember that illiterate edgelord who was in Water who basically told someone to kill themself iirc???? ...Give me a year.

By Fr. Johannes L. Jacobse
This essay is part of a series examining how American religious, economic, and political freedom are compatible with Christian views of a good society. It was provoked by the publication of the Tradinista Manifesto, which called for “Christian socialism” and an established national Church.
The Tradinistas (Traditionalist + Sandinista) make up a new “movement” of mostly young Catholics who drank the heady wine of Marx, and believe that his economics is the wave of the future. The attraction is the same that seduces all devotees of the now discredited ideology: the promise of a just society free of material deprivation and exploitation of the weak.
You would think defending Marx in any place but an American university would be next to impossible, but the Tradinistas are determined to try. In an essay titled “St. Marx and the Dragon” (where Marx is presented as a biblical exegete, the Dragon as capitalism), the Tradinistas declare that Marx’s economic theories should be “subjected to the holy mysteries and authority of the Church.” Money (capital) is Mammon and “all have been seared with trade,” they write. Like Marx, the Tradinistas believe that the “Beast” of Revelation is actually money/Mammon, thus those that fight against capital do the work of God. “Mammon is ascendent in the form of global capitalism and it desires the worship due to God alone,” they argue
Marx, if not yet a saint, should at least be a Father of the Church, if the Tradinistas had their way. And while the ideology of globalism is a threat to community and liberty, Marxist dogma is hardly the solution. Marxism has failed everywhere it has been tried. In many cases it unleashed evils that spilled forth rivers of blood. Yet the attraction doesn’t dim. Why is that? What is it about Marx that holds the minds of men in such paralyzing thrall — in such deep ideological inebriation — that even the voices of those murdered by the violence unleashed time and again by this barbarous ideology cannot penetrate it?
Abortion: The Fly in the Ointment
A clue lies in the Tradinista Manifesto itself. Most of the manifesto reads like the usual anti-capitalist screeds that the left routinely spits out like paper in a copy machine. Declaration #13 however stands out: “Abortion is a horrifying crime which much be eradicated immediately.”
That’s a contradiction. The value of the unborn, which the Tradinistas rightly affirm, cannot be reconciled with Marxist dogma. The Tradinistas don’t understand Marx. They don’t see that if they adopt his dogma, the ground for defending the unborn and ultimately all human life will dissolve beneath their feet.
The Tradinistas don’t comprehend who Marx was, or that his economics are derived from his desire to stamp out religion and not the other way around. The Tradinistas don’t see the contradiction because they don’t understand the materialist ground (man is matter, no soul exists) of Marxist ideology. They don’t comprehend who Marx was, or that his economics are derived from his desire to stamp out religion and not the other way around. The antidote to their ignorance is found in history, in the words of men wiser than ourselves, who experienced the Marxist horrors firsthand and understood why the promises of Marxist justice are so intoxicating.
Voices from the Red Empire
In 1906 Sergei Bulgakov published Karl Marx as a Religious Type. Bulgakov came from a long line of Orthodox priests, but abandoned his Orthodox faith in college to embrace the promises of Marxist justice sweeping the Russian intelligentsia of his day. This essay examines the intellectual and moral bankruptcy of Marxist ideals, which led him to recant Marxist ideology and turn back to the faith of his fathers. Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn considered this essay “one of the deepest analyses of the heart of Marxism and Marx himself.”
Marx, writes Bulgakov, drew from Feuerbach’s critique of religion and turns it against all religion. “He aims toward a complete and final eradication of religion, toward a pure atheism in which no sun shines anymore, neither in the sky or in the earth.” Marx himself wrote:
“Religion is the breath of a suppressed creature, the sentiment of the heartless world and, consequently, the spirit of a callous epoch — it is the opium of the people. The annihilation of religion … is the demand for their real happiness.”
To offer that happiness, Marx called for “the decisive, affirmative elimination of religion. Bulgakov responds that:
Marxist ideology is a break from the Western philosophical tradition; the ostensible continuity between Marx and classical philosophy is only an “imaginary connection;” and that
Marx reduces religion and theology to sociology.
By formulating a theory of economics based on the negation of religion, Marx reduces man to an algebraic unit who finds his purpose and destiny only in relation to the collective. The denial of God reduces man to matter, and once this happens, the restraints against evils are broken. This is why Alexander Solzhenitsyn taught that the cause of the suffering of the past century could be summed up in one existential fact: “Man has forgotten God.”
What We Need is Spiritual Warfare
If there is no room for God — if the memory of God must be eradicated from the cultural memory in order to build the New Jerusalem of the materialist (in fact another Babel) — then any notion of the sacredness of man must be eradicated as well.
The Tradinistas don’t understand Marx, but worse, they don’t understand their Christian faith either. Too many Christians are defenseless against the materialist/secular onslaught of the present age that Marx codified, even though the antecedents of materialism lie even further back in history. Such Christians get stuck in paradigmatic thinking, assuming that secularism in just another “world view” in competition with others. They believe that persuasion defeats evil, when what we need is spiritual warfare.
The sacramental dimension of the Christian faith reveals that material creation shares in a brokenness, the healing of which only comes from God Himself. The locus of salvation is the Cross and the Cross can only be located in the raw, existential, concrete awareness of one’s own brokenness. Dostoevsky was a master at revealing this inextinguishable truth about human life, especially in Crime and Punishment.
This sacramental dimension, this embrace of the Cross in one’s own life, is the means by which the light can penetrate and eventually extinguish the materialist delusion. It is also the way by which the evils unleashed by the mythology of the collective that grows from its acidic soil are defeated. It’s good that the Tradinistas go to church. Presumably they have been baptized and receive the Holy Eucharist. But do they have any understanding of what these sacraments mean? Are they functional atheists?
No Room for God in the Socialist Utopia
The Tradinista’s defense of the unborn, the only point that stands out against their notions of collective justice, may reveal that an authentic sense of the inviolability of human sacredness indeed remains among them. They are ignorant however of how viciously the Marxist materialism that informs their economic ideas militates against it. If there is no room for God — if the memory of God must be eradicated from the cultural memory in order to build the New Jerusalem of the materialist (in fact another Babel) — then any notion of the sacredness of man must be eradicated as well.
So what is the appeal of the false promises of Marxist ideology? Why does it seduce the minds of otherwise bright people and hold them in such paralyzing thrall? The promises of collective justice, the inauguration of the New Jerusalem, the implicit desire to rule others as one of the chosen, all these distortions of soul occur because the whisper first voiced in Eden is heard and believed: You shall be like God.
If, God forbid, Tradinista ideas are implemented in the West as they were in the Soviet Union in the last century, some of them will become like prisoners Solzhenitsyn described in The Gulag Archipelago. The Marxists inmates never perceived that the regime was evil. “There must be some mistake!” they cried, certain that Comrade Stalin would free them any day. They went to their deaths believing it.
