Something I find very cool about the different adaptations of Scott Pilgrim is that they're all very good at being the medium they are and telling the story they want to tell. There'll be elements I miss in each version, but in every case I get why it couldn't fit in this alternate take on the story and characters. Rather than trying to hide the different mediums or recreate the same experience again and again, they instead revel in their unique exploration of this setup. Rather than looking for one "best" take on Scott Pilgrim, they feel like different lenses through which you can gain a more complete perspective on the whole potential of these sillyguys and their emotional issues.

This post came to me because I was watching the show, and got kinda bummed that it didn't include a lot of the stuff with Kim and how Scott repressed his memories of hurting her in high school. But then! I remembered that the show is not about Scott, it's about Ramona. If I want to go in depth on Scott's relationships, I can read the books; but the show is choosing to focus on other characters more relevant to Ramona like her exes. Do you see what I'm getting at? There's no need to choose which one is best, because they all make each other better by expanding on whichever elements work best with that particular story. I don't need to choose between Stephen Stills being gay and being besties with Knives, because both are real and true!

[And then Rory says, like the whole town knows he's got a thing for you, and it's like whoa.] Yeah, but she can't deny it. At this point, they've been in you know, delicate situations together where she knows he's about to ask her out. She knows. [She's still trying with that we're just friends.] Yeah, come on, come on, Well, you know I can't blame her. You know you can't. It's a small town. You gotta you know, you don't want to you know what where you eat if you know what I mean. [It was almost like Luke had been prepping for that moment because he was ready, like I'm going to be cool, I'm gonna be supportive, and I'm about to prove to you that this is not the right guy] It was, I say, a master stroke in psychology. I mean it was just what a move. And it's the first time I realized that. I mean, it really made Luke and Lorelai legit I mean, they really legitimized that that that narrative right there with that scene. I mean it was like, if you had any doubts that this is going to be a theme throughout the the entirety of the series, here it is. Look at this scene. Then, boy, everybody's anticipating Luke's reaction to this and more to the point, how she's going to tell him, and oh man, wow, what a great scene. It was perfect...Now, I remember shooting that scene and enjoying that scene so much to do because he was in a in a rare occasion, not uptight and not irritated, and he was cool as a cucumber. And you saw a different side of Luke who was just like kind of kind of playing a role there to to get under her skin a little bit because he knew that was his only chance... It's one of the few times I've ever kind of enjoyed watching myself in a scene. I get it, I would too, because it was because it was, like, you know, I was in command, and it was just like I wasn't reactive, and I was just like kind of kind of pushing the narrative there. And and she was the one that was flummixed. And isn't she wonderful as the flummixed person. I mean just had no idea what was going on, and it was just the great reads on her face. It was just fantastic. I love that scene. -Scott

I think what I hate most about the Teen Wolf movie is that there were at least three instances where Scoot was parenting Eli and basically stealing formative moments from Derek in an attempt to endear the audience to an Eli and Scoot relationship and prime us to accept Scoot adopting Eli….

Crime #1: growling in Eli’s face to get him to transform??? What dude? How does that even work when Eli faints at the sight of a transformation? And if it’s that easy then Eli should have transformed anytime Derek flashed his eyes. It’s so messed up because Derek would have LOVED to be there for his first transformation, even just partial, but it was ripped from him bc Scoot wanted to be Mr. Alpha badass.

And no, I don’t think Derek guiding Eli through his first beta shift makes it better because Derek should have had the opportunity to guide him from his very first shift and help him maintain that shift so he could do it at will.

And don’t try to tell me it was necessary because super strong and fast alpha wolves should be able to carry fifteen year old scrawny boys.

And super strong and fast alpha werewolves should be able to outrun their half dead ex girlfriend without breaking a sweat.

And don’t get me started on Derek being injured. Actually I will get started!

when you consider Derek was originally hurt bc Scoot didn’t just go after Allison with his fast werewolf speed or sniff her out with his super werewolf nose tells you all you need to know about Scoot and his connection to his werewolf. he won’t be a great wolf teacher BECAUSE HE DOESNT KNOW SHIT. And I am blaming him (for the reasons above) for Derek being injured in the first place, so Scott set the whole stealing Eli’s first transformation from Derek thing into motion.

Crime #2: Derek is basically begging Eli to practice with him, but Scoot is the one who gets to play with Eli?? No way. That’s stupid. I reject it

Crime #3: DEREK DIDNT GET TO WATCH ELI PLAY OR MAKE THE WINNING SHOT??? After he convinced coach to give him some time on the field?? Blasphemous.

ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING he was only prevented from doing so bc of some stupid shit that didn’t even really involve him?? Like none of that shit was his business???

It’s like Jeff is trying to make Derek seem like a bad parent who doesn’t know how to help his own son and Scoot is a natural born parenting genius. He posits all these moments of good parenting but gifts them to Scoot instead of Derek. Derek is trying and trying and instead of having even one scene where Derek and Eli aren’t being standoffish and frustrated, Jeffery attempts to give us some easy as pie, natural, buddy-buddy relationship with Scoot and Eli.

we were given crumbs for Derek and Eli’s relationship and it’s sick, really.

And I will never forgive Scoot for being tongue deep with Allison THE MOMENT Derek is BURNED TO DEATH (a crime punishable by life in prison)and RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS GRIEVING SON (have some class! You’re thirty or whatever!)

There are so many more crimes in this movie but I’m trying not to remember the movie at all, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But now the room is spinning while I'm trying to fill in all the gaps - I paced for hours on empty; I jumped at the slightest of sounds

Scotty gets electrocuted on the job. It's lucky Bones is good at his job.

Bones tapped his foot as the turbolift landed in the engineering decks. As soon as the doors open, med kit in hand, he bolted off toward where the crowd of people had formed around Scotty. He pushed them out of the way, there were way too many people here, and saw where he lay, not breathing, on the floor. 

“Move back, all of you,” he said, kneeling to the floor and feeling for a pulse.

There was none.

“Has anyone done anything?”

The crowd shook their heads. Amateurs. You’d think a group working in one of the most dangerous parts of the ship would know at least some first aid. Even the security officers knew how to see to a phaser wound. 

He moved his head over his face to feel him breathing and felt nothing again. “How long has he been down?”

“Two minutes,” said an Ensign. 

He rolled up his sleeves. Despite all their medical advancements, CPR was still the only way to revive someone who’s heart had stopped. Apart from concoctions made from a mad mans blood, but resurrecting Jim was a one time thing, at least he hoped. 

“Right, Scotty, I’m sorry about the ribs.”

He placed his hands on the breastbone, the heels over where his heart was and began to press down hard. The crowd flinched when the ribs began to crack and splinter. He didn’t flinch. The only way CPR properly worked was if you broke a few ribs, it meant you were getting through to the heart properly. 

“Twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty.”

He focused on his head. Tilting it back, he pinched his nose and gave one deep breath, waiting to see if his chest moved, and it did. He did one more breath but didn’t see any signs of life. 

“Can you hear me?” He said as he carried on with compressions. “Scotty, can you hear me?”

No answer. He carried on with the compressions, starting to appreciate all the times Jim made him go to the gym, because without those horrible arm workouts, he probably wouldn’t have the strength to do CPR for too long. 

With Scotty still not responding, he lent his head back and did two more breaths. His chest rose but didn’t carry on. He didn’t open his eyes. 

“Don’t give up on me Scotty,” he said between compressions. “I think the Enterprise would stop working if you died, or you’d start haunting it, one of the two, and I don’t like the thought of either.”

As if the thought of anything happening to the Enterprise had pulled him from the brink, he jolted upright, eyes wide open and heaving in deep breaths. He lay a hand on Bones’ shoulder as he guided him on breathing easier. 

“How many fingers am I holding up?” Bones asked him, waving his hand in front of his face.

“Three?” 

Bones nodded. Scotty moved his hand to his chest as he tried to get up. 

“Why do my ribs hurt?”

Bones looked away, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’ll explain later.” He said. “Now to sickbay, come one.”

He put his arm around him as they headed back to sickbay. Scotty limped, still holding his ribs as he did. The doors opened with a swoosh, some of the ensigns shouted good luck and gave him thumbs up, it was nice to know Scotty was more well liked with his staff than he was. 

“Do I have to go to sickbay?” Scotty asked as the turbolift shifted upwards. 

Bones rolled his eyes, “You literally died.”

“I’ll be fine!”

“No, you’re at least getting a check up, if not a full night in sickbay, and tomorrow off.”

“But-”

“No buts, now come on.”

The turbolift dinged as they reached sickbay. Scotty sighed as he walked him in and placed him on the bed. A nurse came over and began doing some tests as Bones took some readings. 

“At least I can get caught up on my engineering journals.”

Bones just nodded and added a tourniquet to his arm. Tapping the IV bag, he made sure there were no bubbles in the bag or the tube, before pushing the needle into the vein and shutting him up. 

“Anything to get you sitting still, Scotty.”

Can you tell I've started watching ER? One of my main gripes with that show is how light their CPR is? In one episode they feel bad for breaking ribs when I swear that's the point. Also don't take any of this as medical advice, I have no first aid training apart from ER. I have learnt how they put IV's in, also from Wikihow. But between getting into Top Gun and 2023 whumptober, I've kind of forgotten what equipment is canon in Star Trek and what's made up in my mind, lol. Thanks for reading! @whumptober-archive
