Universe X #5

We’ve got some Micronauts. I’m still surprised and alarmed that they’re part of Universe X’s big picture.

Although, here they are called the Ant Men.

Huh. Weren’t Scott Lang and his daughter stowed away in Tony’s refurbished Red Ronin armor? I guess they died when he tried to fight the Celestials. That’s depressing.

So red guy is Ant Man, son of Marionette and Arcturus Rann. I guess he named the team after himself.

Bug is the green one. Fun fact: the 616 version was in the Guardians of the Galaxy. Marionette is glowy, golden light woman. Neutron is the one who has the tall, conical head. Proton is the egg shaped one. Spartak is orange and has the crested helmet. And Spidra is upside down woman with all the hair.

Did you need to know their names? No and neither did I.

We’re following up from the Cap Special here so we start with Captain America’s funeral, held in the ruins of Washington DC and the grave of American democracy.

Wyatt Wingfoot, Cap’s former partner Redwing, gives the eulogy, calling Steve an unknown soldier, not really understood by the people he spent his life protecting.

So things are grim.

Not helped by funeral drama.

Redwing blows up at Lil Mar-Vell when various heroes offer to take up Cap’s role in guarding him on his quest. As far as Wyatt is concerned, Mar-Vell caused Cap’s death. By dragging him around on some weird quest and not being able to save him despite saying he has cosmic consciousness.

Also, Unpersoned Loki tries to start off on a new page with Thor but of all approaches chooses a flirty one.

I kind of want to roll up a newspaper and give Loki a smack.

The Tong of Creel attacks Windsor Castle to claim another piece of Absorbing Man.

King Captain Britain has impressive forces to throw at the problem. Himself, riding a Dragon Man. The Union Jacks. The Iron Avengers. Medusa. The new Black Widow, on loan from Russia. The new Black Knight/Prince of the Inhumans.

King Britain is more than equipped to kick the Tong of Creel’s ass in a straightforward fight. But while he’s doing one of those, someone sneaks behind the lines and just swipes the chest of Absorbing Man.

Dammit but that’s embarrassing. You know these guys are after the pieces. You know that they tend to swipe them in the chaos of battle. You should have prepared a better place for it than a glass display case! Throw it into the Sun!

Meanwhile, Mar-Vell and new protectors Venom, Thor, the circus X-Men, gorilla Hulk and child Bruce, and half-on-fire Namor go to HELL.

The Human Engineering Life Laboratory.

Acronyms are fun.

Home to the Prometheus Pit, once the entrance to the Microverse or Subatomica.

Mar-Vell needed to come here to get Psycho-Man’s Emotio-Caster. And he finds that the Prometheus Pit is clogged with some weird, organic matter.

The Ant Men are finally relevant to the story because they pop up to exposit everything. Well, Nighthawk got the opening exposition dump about Microverse stuff, too.

In the far off future, Prince Wayfinder finds a sentient sword embedded in a star that leads him to Earth of the distant past and created the subatomic world for him and his people to live on. The sword also imbued him with the Enigma Force, making him the first Captain Universe.

When Wayfinder died, the Enigma Force passed down to his descendant Arcturus Rann. But when Psycho-Man got tired of the Fantastic Four kicking his ass, he conquered his own home the Microverse, using his Emotio-Caster to fill people with fear, doubt, and hate. He even influenced Marionette to kill her own husband Rann.

The Enigma Force that was in him passed into the Realm of Death instead of choosing a new, living host and chose Dead Mar-Vell.

That’s the big inciting event for Mar-Vell’s side of the plot. That’s why he’s suddenly making moves despite having been dead for a long while.

When all hope was lost to save the Microverse from Psycho-Man, Ant Man and his Ant Men chose scorched earth. They evacuated through the Prometheus Pit and then had Man-Thing clog it up so nobody else could escape. Literally scorched. All who know fear burn at the Man-Thing’s touch.

The Microverse was on borrowed time. It was created and sustained by the Enigma Force. When that Force died with Rann, the world it created began falling apart.

The last of the Enigma Force that had been in the Microverse then went back in time and empowered the last survivor of the previous universe.

Yes, that’s right. In Universe X, Galactus and the Microverse share the same origin.

It gets betterworse, depending on your tolerance for this arc welding. Aaron Stack, the new Watcher, speculates that it wasn’t the sword that gave Wayfinder power and created a world for him, it was the star the sword was stuck into. And Galactus’ ultimate fate was to be turned into a star. Therefore, we have a bootstrap paradox time loopy.

The Enigma Force creates Galactus who gets turned into a star which creates the Enigma Force and the Microverse, which eventually collapses and sends its last energy back in time to create Galactus.

I don’t have to like it but I do have to respect Earth X and its sequels conspiracy board with yarn between various things “it’s all connected!” approach.

Neutron yanks the Emotio-Caster out of the mess for Mar-Vell, which finally collapses whatever remained of Subatomica and Man-Thing.

Venom asks what Mar-Vell needs the emotion controlling device for and he says he wants to make people happy.

Nobody seems to find this alarming or ominous!

Maybe because he bolded happy. I feel that given the device in question the emphasis should have been on “make people happy.”

So much of this quest is Mar-Vell gathering up dangerous items and going “just trust me, bro” and people do!

Also, Mr S (Cyclops) realizes that he can communicate with Phoenix in the Realm of the Dead through their psychic rapport.

In perhaps the only significant characterization that the new X-Men have gotten so far, Charmer is upset about that because she has a crush on Scott.

And while pondering the Galactus-Enigma Force ouroboros, Aaron Stack goes and digs up the Supreme Intelligence from beneath the surface of the Moon, like he’s been talking about doing for a while, and sits on him.

Five issues, an issue 0, and three specials in. And still not a really concrete idea of where we’re going with this.

Aaron at least decides to go talk to Nighthawk soon. I’m glad for him. Going out and talking to new people instead of pondering the multiverse and letting Uatu yell at him.

Scariest mission you've been on that doesn't include Kang or Thanos?

That would easily have to be the time when I went on a mission to gather intel on a gang of bad guys only to find they had three kidnapped kids in their custody. And from the looks of them, they had been there for a couple days or so.

Tiny little ones too. 3 or 4 years old, easy. Dirty clothes and dirt smudges on their faces and bruises on their wrists. Shoes had disappeared and they were shaking and crying.

And I was mad.

Like this kind of mad.

If I could have, I would have beaten the hell out of all of those bastards and laid waste to their entire operation right then and there, but I couldn’t. There were too many bad guys, and one of them could’ve grabbed one of the kids and threatened them and that would be it for me.

Screw the mission. Those kids came first.

What was scary was I couldn’t shrink them and tuck them away, nor could I grow giant because that would scare them further than they already were. And they were tucked away deep into the gang’s hideout so it wasn’t like I could snatch them and jump out the window with them to get outside.

We were going to have to sneak through the labyrinth as best as we could without getting caught.

And that was terrifying.

I think I want to hear more about how you rescued those kids. How did you do it? I can't stop thinking about those little kids all scared and crying and you rescuing them. 😭😭😭 Did any of them remind you of Cassie? Will you tell me more please?

I can handle that, Anon.

The job wasn’t supposed to be that intense. Stake-outs hardly ever were. When you can shrink to the size of an ant, you get overlooked more than anything else in the room. Heck, even dust bunnies tend to get more attention than you. Plus when you’re an ex-con and have done time, you know better than most what to look for when you spy on that brand of bad guys. So for a guy like me, stake-outs were the easiest missions for me to take on.

Until they’re not stake-outs anymore.

That was the case for me some time ago, when a stake-out turned into something far more severe, something far more life or death that there was no way on this Earth my conscience could let me walk away from and just stick to the job.

The place? The edges of the pier district in San Francisco in a warehouse that looked like it hadn’t been touched in as many years as I had been around, and I know it sounds so cliche for bad guys to hunker down in an old, abandoned warehouse, but hey. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I’m just surprised the cops don’t have constant surveillance on places like that where bad guys are as common as cockroaches, but whatever. I’m getting off track.

I remember the sun was setting which meant darkness would take over the city in no time, which was around the time for these guys to start coming out of the woodwork and do whatever dirty work they were gonna do that I was supposed to report on. From what we already knew, they were in the planning process of some kind of heist, and that was literally all we knew. Some intel, right? That’s where I come in.

It took a while to actually maneuver through the maze of boxes and junk that had been stored in the warehouse, but eventually I found the creeps near the center of the building, and within an hour, I had learned these guys were going to plan a hostage swap. The lives of whoever were unfortunate enough to get in their way for some super fancy shmancy tech that they figured out how they could manipulate the tech’s good purpose for their own gain. Go figure. And guess which really important company was the target? You guessed it. Stark Industries, Malibu Division.

I gotta admit though, if you wanted to get Tony’s attention, putting lives at risk was definitely one way to do it. It was a bold plan, but it was stupid. One word from me, and this operation would have no chance like a fish in a barrel. And that’s just what I was about to do too.

This is until I realized they already had their hostages. And not just any hostages. They had kids.

Two girls and a boy who were tiny little things, maybe four years old if they were a day. Their clothes were dirty and tattered; their shoes and socks were gone; but at least the bastards had the decency to not let them sit in their own messes. That much I could tell from their clothes. They had dirt smudges on their faces, streaked from tears that they were still crying. They were shaking from fear, and I could even see bruises forming on their tiny wrists.

And I was this close to killing some people. Screw the mission. I had to save these babies.

The anger that literally made me hear my heartbeat in my ears and feel the blood rush through my heart told me to just take out all the monsters in there, but the dad in me reminded me I had to be careful about how I do this. I was too outnumbered to just go in there and lay the smackdown, even with my Ant-Man abilities. Any bad guy that saw somebody was attacking them, even if they couldn’t see the attacker, would use the kids as leverage. Hell, that was the whole point of why those poor babies were there to begin with. I had to be really smart about this. Get the kids out, then say the word so other people could deal with the goons.

But how? Yeah, that was the question of the day. How was I going to get those kids out without raising alarm among the bad guys and without scaring the kids more than they already were.

When in doubt though, I find a really great strategy to dividing and conquering is to go sabotage something that’ll force somebody to go look at it. And I’m really great at doing some sabotage, especially something electrical.

Ten minutes later, I had their lights, A/C, security cameras, and precious wifi down and out for the count, which successfully took all but two bad guys away from the kids. These were definitely better odds at taking somebody out, and that’s just what I did. I knocked the guys out cold without them ever seeing me coming, and to make the whole thing sweeter, I managed to arrange them so they were sitting down and slouched over the table in the room, beers in hand. It would at least hide the face these guys got knocked out by something other than alcohol.

The little ones were too stunned about what they saw to actually cry out, which really worked out in my favor. But they were really wary of me, especially in my helmet, so I quickly retracted that so they could see my face. I squatted down in front of them, just a couple feet away so I was more at their level. “It’s okay, it’s okay,” I said quietly as the three of them huddled together and tried to hide from me. “It’s okay, I’m not gonna hurt you. I’m gonna take you home. You wanna go home?” They all just stared at me for a moment before nodding. “My name is Scott. What’s your name?”

The first to speak up was one of the girls, with red hair and freckles all over. “Hannah.”

I smiled. “Hannah, what a pretty name. I like it.” Then I looked at the other two and asked again, “What’s your name?”

The boy had the blondest blond hair that was ever blond, despite the dirt that messed up his hair, and he said quietly, “Kade.”

“Ohhhhh, I like that name too. That’s a good one.”

The last girl had really dark hair and eyes to match, but I was surprised to see a smile creep across her face. “Chloe. Are you Ant-Man? My brother (bruddah) thinks you’re cool.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Yeah,” I nodded, “that’s me.”

Chloe looked at her comrades and pointed at me. “He’s a superhero.”

Kade asked, “Like Paw Patrol?”

“Noooooo,” she shook her head, “like Superman.”

I remember my brain trying to decide which comparison was more accurate, and before I could end up deciding the answer was probably Paw Patrol over Superman, I interrupted, “Yeah, I’m a superhero, and I’m gonna get you guys home. But we need to go now before the bad guys come back.”

Well that was enough to make the three of them scramble up and into my arms as quickly as they could. In two minutes, they decided I was better than what they had been dealing with.

I’d never held three kids at the same time before, and I didn’t really know if such a feat was possible, but where there’s a will, there’s a way, and I managed to do it. Don’t ask me how, I just did. Dad power. “You guys are going to have to be really quiet for me, okay? We gotta play hide and seek so the bad guys can’t catch us.”

Then the scariest part happened then. The lights came back on. That was enough to make Hannah scream in fright. If the lights came back on, then their cameras weren’t far behind. I did a little more sabotage on those, but there’s only so much you can do without making it obvious somebody messed with everything.

And all of this meant my clock was ticking fast.

Hopefully, Hannah’s scream didn’t make any of the bad guys think something was wrong, but I wasn’t going to hold my breath on it. It was time now to play the ultimate game of hide and seek. Or more like avoid and evade.

I couldn’t tell you how long it took me to get from my entrance to the interior where the kids were, and I especially couldn’t tell you how long it took to make my way back. On the way in, I was riding an ant’s back which made maneuvering the whole maze-like place easier. Normal size, on foot, carrying three four-year-olds, and avoiding as many cameras as I could really made a difference.

Over five minutes in, I could hear commotion from somewhere behind us. The kids’ disappearance must’ve been discovered. The kids must have sensed something along those same lines because they huddled as close to me as they could, ducked their heads, and shut their eyes so forcefully, they looked pained. “I wanna go hooooome,” Kade whimpered.

“I know, buddy,” I whispered. “I’m gonna get you home.”

That’s when a solution hit me. I needed a really big distraction. That or hundreds of little distractions that turned into one big distraction. I used my EMP communicator to tell any nearby fire ants that I’m trying to save “larvae” from my colony and needed help slowing down the predators coming after us. Lucky for us, there’s loads of fire ants in California, and the four nearest colonies answered the call.

And honestly, that’s when we started needing it most. I could hear a few of the bad guys patrolling around the area, weaving in and out of the boxes and junk piles looking for us. At that point, I had to assume they knew I was there via cameras, despite my best efforts to avoid them. Otherwise, I think they would have behaved differently if they were just looking for kids. Maybe they would have been louder, bribing them to come out of hiding with candy or who knows what. But it’s been too quiet since they first realized the kids were gone. They’re being strategic and looking for me.

When I heard grown men around me cry out in surprise and in pain over getting repeatedly stung, that’s when I started moving faster to get the hell out of there.

Once we were clear of the building, I sent an SOS, “I need backup” kind of alert as well as called the fire ants to retreat and go back home, thanking them for their help and promising sugary goodness in their future.

Eventually, the authorities and the backup I called for arrived to take care of the very sick bad guys. For those who don’t know, fire ant venom has been known to cause some nausea and chest pains, and for hypersensitive individuals, it could also cause shock and in rare cases, coma. The nausea and chest pains would just have to suffice for now until more justice is served.

Hannah, Chloe, and Kade did not and would not leave my arms until their parents showed up, despite the insistence of the authorities. I told the authorities that I would not and could not leave these kids alone until I knew they were safe with their families, and thankfully, they relented and let me do that.

I am very happy to report that all three kids were safely returned home, and they’re doing very well now. I am also proud to report I have been invited to all their birthday parties ever since then, which of course I went to. They’ve become my little buddies, and I even got a picture from Kade’s parents this past Halloween of him dressing up as Ant-Man.
