Royal Dornoch was lovely a few days ago. Brora. A natural golf course set on the machair, seaside turf which is only found in north and west Scotland and far west Ireland. Sheep and cattle graze the fairways and electric fences protect the greens. This is golf as it was, some say as it should be. Sea views, some cracking holes and mountain vistas complete the windswept majesty that comprises a truly old-fashioned golfing experience. Let no-one ever tell you golf isn’t beautiful 😍 The heathland 9th at Golspie showcases the very best of the Highlands’ natural beauty of heather, pine, gorse, mountains and blue sky. The course itself ain’t bad either, being a delightful blend of links and heathland. Golspie has some great holes in a spectacular Sutherland setting. One of my favourite holes, the 8th at Tain. A riot of heather, broom, gorse, marram and fescue, this little beauty is a tricky 189-trader from the back tees, with a natural greensite all subtle movement, protected by some deep pot bunkers. Tain is a super course, perhaps the most unheralded of all the great Highland links.
