An Unforgettable Encounter with the Tasseled Scorpionfish

This tasseled scorpionfish had graced me with its presence, leaving an indelible mark on my memory and a profound appreciation for the wonders of the underwater world.

A captivating sight unfolded before me during a scuba dive off the mesmerizing coast of Manado, Indonesia. Amidst the underwater world, my gaze fell upon a magnificent creature known as Scorpaenopsis oxycephala, commonly known as the Tassled Scorpionfish. “This well-camouflaged ambush predator spends most of its time resting motionless on the seafloor, looking more like part of the reef than a fish. When smaller fishes venture near, the scorpionfish makes a quick lunge and opening its huge mouth in a fraction of a second inhales the prey into its large mouth. The first picture shows a Scorpaenopsis diabolus, the false stonefish or the devil scorpionfish, it is a carnivorous ray-finned fish and can reach 30 cm (12 in) in length. It is an ambush predator and feeds on passing prey such as invertebrates and small fish. S. diabolus exhibits biofluorescence, that is, when illuminated by blue or ultraviolet light, it re-emits it as red, and appears differently than under white light illumination. Biofluorescence may assist in intraspecific communication and camouflage but it's unclear.

If you saw my update last weekend, I went and broke my back somehow, and I’m sure my job going out on the water had something to do with it. Being a marine biologist is fun but it’s not a cushy job, especially if you’re going out and doing field work. So, a combination of lifting heavy equipment and animals and acting like I’m still a spritely, young spring chicken did me in. So, that explains why there were no fish explained posts last weekend, though I’m trying really hard to at least do 2 or 3 a week on the weekends for something that looks like a schedule. So, here I go again - this time, we’ll talk about the Weedy Stingfish.

The Weedy Stingfish debuted in AC Pocket Camp this March (2022) for Fishing Tourney 48 that featured succulent items as prizes. I love the theming here - both succulents (which include cactus) and the stingfish have sharp spines. The difference here is that, though getting pricked by a cactus sucks, getting pricked by the fish sucks twice as much because it’s venomous as well!

The large bony fish Family called Scorpaenidae includes very many species (some 454 in total) of prickly, spikey, and often venomous fish. When it comes to defense, these fish pack a punch! I mean, whoever named Scorpaenidae was really onto something, naming them after the equally prickly and venomous scorpions. Many of them are also masters of disguise, with complicated speckling patterns that allow them to hide motionless among corals and rocky habitat. Within this family are the Scorpaeninae, a subfamily that includes the traditional “true” scorpion fish and the lionfish - like the luna lionfish and red lionfish we have covered before. That also makes those fish the weedy’s closest relatives in AC so far, being a true scorpionfish in Tribe Scorpaenini. It’s scientific name is Scorpaenopsis cirrosa.

Picture from FishBase. I’m not sure ACPC could have really captured the complicated patterning on this guy, so I think they made a great effort. They also come in a bunch of different colors besides this pinkish-red color.

These fish are native to coastal waters around Asia and south to Australia. Their hunting strategy is just about the same as their strategy to avoid predators - depend upon that camouflage and wait for prey to come by and predators to swim away. Unfortunately, they are so good at hiding and remaining motionless that people also have a hard time seeing them and accidently step on them which is incredibly painful. Although it won’t kill you, I hear you’ll wish it did.
