– Nawai mantis – Made a new friend yesterday. I think its a she, but I may be wrong. Anyway, she seemed determined to climb onto me, so I obliged. Then she would not get off. 😅 Kinda fun befriending something so small. I was almost tempted to take her home, but of course I didn't. 😉 What I really like about this picture is that it can help one understand the size that this mantis gets to fully-grown. That's my index finger on my left hand. Now, look at your nail on your index finger. Understand now just how small this beauty is? Yip, it's really tiny. – Orb weaver – Got to shoot at a new spot today with my buddy, and fellow macro photographer, Dustin Rhoades. With new territory there are always new finds and boy did we have a shoot of shoots today. It's been pretty cold for quite a while now and today the sun shone, everything warmed up and the wonderful world of macro creatures sprung to life! While I have seen and tried to shoot this particular kind of orb weaver many times before I've just never got a shot that was anywhere near half decent. You see when these little spiders sense the slightest bit of danger they clump themselves together so tightly that any image of them just doesn't look good. But as with all things macro, just cause you've tried it a thousand times doesn't mean you shouldn't try it a thousand times more. So that's just what I did. At first this little guy (maybe girl...I honestly don't know) was fixing up its web and moving continuously. I tried and tried to get a shot, but it was moving so much that the images just looked horrible. I started getting a little frustrated dancing around its web trying to get the right angle and that's when I bumped the branch accidently. My heart jumped into my throat as I saw it clump together. I was sure that I'd blown my chance yet again. However, this one didn't pull itself together like they normally do. After shooting several different angles I finally found the right one. – Chinese praying mantis – When I was a child I really didn't like praying mantises. There was something that freaked me out about them and would send me running as fast as I could away from them. While everyone usually laughed at me, back then, I personally didn't find it very funny. Looking back on those days I can't help but laugh and actually see the funny side of it as well. I mean who would have thought I'd be the bug/spider hunter that I am today. Peculiar how time changes us all. Now, that I am absolutely in love with these curiously bold creatures, I can't get enough spending time with them while I'm out shooting. The way they look at their reflection in my lens, almost admiring their own splendor. The way they bob and weave like a boxer. The way they will decide that they like you and literally hop onto you and stick with you until they get bored. They are amazing and I sincerely encourage anyone with a phobia of them to learn to get to know them and hopefully you will start to have experiences like I do with these sentient beings. I know it can be difficult when fear plays such a big role, but I assure you that it's possible to mould that fear into admiration. – Radix carpenter ant – I am a seeker of all things small, yet some subjects allude me. Mainly because they are either too fast to get a proper shot of, or they are so reflective that it's really difficult to get a shot that I am please with. Ants are one of those subjects. I have tried and failed to shoot ants so many times that I eventually stopped even considering them when I'd see them. However I'm of the opinion that sometimes you just gotta try even when you feel like you're doomed for failure. You know; did it catch your eye? Did it make you feel something? Yes? Well then do something about it. So when I came across this lone carpenter ant on my hike the other day I just had to try. After many attempts, and a very uncooperative wind blowing, I finally got this shot. Can I do better? Yes. Am I please with this result? – Female velvet ant (wasp) – Even though Mutillidae carry the common name of "ant" they are in fact not ants at all, but wasps. The male is easily distinguished from the female as they have wings, while females are wingless. While you might be thinking that this puts the female at a disadvantage, nothing could be further from the truth. You see, the male is stingless. The female on the other had has one of the most painful stings in the insect kingdom. It is said to be excruciating, and has earned them another common name, which is the cow killer. That being said...they actually can't kill a cow. Yip, it's a myth. I'm guessing that the name was given to them as a warning for people stay away. What about humans? Can they kill us? No they cannot, so breathe. Their bodies are said to be so tough that entomologist have difficulty piercing the exoskeleton with steel pins when attempting to mount them for display in cabinets. This tank-like armour allows them to invade the nests of their prey, and also helps them retain moisture. As scary as they sound they are actually not aggressive and will only sting if provoked.
