Better Mature Scooby-Doo Series Ideas #3926:

Midway through a normal Scooby episode, one of the suspects turns up dead. The cops are called and, naturally, Mystery Inc. is kicked off the investigation. Daphne doesn't want to give up on the mystery and, after Fred makes sure everyone is fine and okay with returning to such a traumatic investigation, they go undercover as the monsters they bust in order to investigate.

Shaggy and Scooby managed to befriend the victim before their murder and have to deal with their grief throughout it, wanting to find the killer so they can bring peace to themselves and the people close to the victim

Velma believes in the justice system and has to reevaluate her belief that finding the truth will lead to justice, as those in power are involved with the murder.

Fred and Daphne have to navigate the future of the team, as this event has obviously scarred them. Moreover, as the other characters go through their arcs, they wonder if they should leave their cryptozoology passions behind and pursue nysteries that will help more people in actual ways. What is more important: pursuing what they love or helping the world?

Everyone still cares about each other and their characters aren't messed with, but they are challenged by the new situation.

However, the victim Shaggy and Scooby befriended is a huge nerd about Mystery Inc. Their friends want to solve mysteries, inspired by them.

So when the case is wrapped up, Mystery Inc. gets back on the road, ready to continue their regular cases. Why? Because there's another team solving mysteries.

Them inspiring one group won't solve everything, but it helps them realize that so much good can be done if we just do our best with the situations we're placed in. If they come across another case like this they'll do their damndest to solve it. Otherwise? They can keep doing what they normally do.

i have a lot of complicated feelings about sdmi and its portrayals of SA and domestic violence--which is many posts' worth of a subject, and i'll probably end up properly drafting out at least some of them sooner or later--and one of them is that ricky and pericles are a surprisingly good and chillingly accurate depiction of financial abuse.

this show spikes the ball right into the center of the earth on its other SA/IPV dynamics, but every time i come back to pericky with more life experience and uncover more layers to it, i am genuinely shocked by how consistently they get it right. and not only that, but it's representation for a demographic of survivors that you just do not see in fiction, ever, played fully for tragedy and horror when it would have been so, so easy for them to make light of it or victim-blame.

and just, yeah, the financial abuse is honestly a big one. that's not something you see pretty much ever, let alone in kid's media and let alone with accuracy or respect. this show swings wildly back and forth between 'hats off' and 'what the fuck is wrong with you,' and pericky (as opposed to both romance subplots with the gang 🙃) falls pretty squarely into the first one.

i knew the new velma cartoon was going to suck shit when it was announced it was a scooby doo cartoon without scooby doo.

Also while I'm scoobyposting, does anybody else remember that episode of the scooby doo show where they go to see a production of a Christmas Carol and it gets interupted by these creepy angels ghost thingies in white robes? I had it on vhs as a kid, and found it online as a teen, but I can never seem to find it these days

Just finished the new Scooby movie and am a big fan of the continuing characterization of Daphne being the 'leader' during investigations and Fred being her lame boyfriend.

Also go watch Scooby-Doo and Krypto, Too! I'm 99% sure the Scooby team was told to make a Krypto crossover to tie in with League of Super Pets, but they went off and made what is unironically one of my favorite Scooby movies.
