9 The Hermit: Fermat's Last Theorem Pierre de Fermat was a 17th-century French mathematician with a habit of taking notes in the margins of books he was reading. One such note, found after his death, announced that he had discovered a marvelous mathematical proof "which this margin is too narrow to contain." By not writing the solution, he left a tempting and frustrating offer for generations afterward. Many mathematicians struggled to produce Fermat's proof, consuming lifetimes. The proof was finally achieved in 1995 after centuries of persistent work done without assurance that a solution truly existed. The Hermit represents the focus and isolation of Fermat's studies, and of those who worked to solve his mystery. Many discoveries and insights of nature and of ourselves can be developed only in nurturing solitude, separated from distraction and fulfilled through thought and study.

⚽🚀 Did you know that a soccer ball survived the Challenger shuttle explosion in 1996? 🤯 The ball was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean after the tragic crash that killed all seven astronauts on board. This resilient ball is a testament to the durability and strength of soccer balls, as well as the human spirit in the face of tragedy. 🙌🏼 Have you ever heard of this incredible story before? Freshly cast Garamont is a winner, printed over landscape created with bubble wrap. Text begins Percy Bysshe Shelley’s seductive poem “Love’s Philosophy,” used to explore our love affair with plastic. Added a little violet to the black (tip via @bigjumppress from last week’s @pipletterpress inky Shop Talk). #tensile #sciencestories #weekendwip #artistbooks #letterpress (at Tacoma, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/COVjpRxBoCR/?igshid=gvrk20jxpkc3

Have you heard about the scientist who introduced Marie Sklodowska to her future life partner and colleague Pierre Curie? . In his laboratory, inventor and Nobel Prize physicist Gabriel Lippmann supported a Polish student in her research, Marie Sklodowska. Lippmann introduced Marie to his collaborator in piezoelectricity, Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre became partners in both life and science. The couple would turn out to be one of the most Nobel Prize-awarded families ever. . On this day in 1845 Gabriel Lippmann was born. He would become a pioneer in early colour photography. . In February 1891, Lippmann announced to the Paris Academy of Sciences: "I have succeeded in obtaining the image of the spectrum with its colors on a photographic plate whereby the image remains fixed and can remain in daylight without deterioration." . His method was hard to use and never came into widespread use, but the feasibility of taking photographs in natural colours stimulated the desire for such technologies. Lippmann was awarded the 1908 Physics Prize for his method of producing colour photography. . Photo: Gabriel Lippmann in 1908. Library of Congress. . Via @nobelprize_org . . Long term tryst with the wetlands - not just any old fly in fly out affair
By Gabrielle Ahern The wetlands are home to all kinds of wildlife, especially birds, fish, reptiles, crustaceans, mammals and marsupials. Many are endemic to Australia and familiar faces all year round. The Bar Tailed Godwit flies back and forth between its breeding grounds in Alaska, China or Siberia and summer retreat in Australian and New Zealand wetlands. Avoiding a cold winter appears to…

How technology has changed life
By Gabrielle Ahern Technology has made a positive impact to human society for many years, possibly thousands. If you think about what you do every day and how that activity is linked to using technology, the list is quite exhausting. When I wake up in the morning, I check my mobile for messages or emails, before preparing for the day, which is dominated by more apps, devices, equipment,…

Here is part of an interview I published about why I enjoy science & the art of visual storytelling.
Q: Why do you like story telling?
“I have always enjoyed the art of story telling. The research journey can be compared to the Proppian fairy tale, where readers follow the story of a heroic figure who must overcome many challenges during their valiant quest. But to claim the reward the hero must defeat an evil foe.
Just like real life, the ending of the fairytale is not always a dream come true, but it’s an ending that eventuates toward something through the lessons learnt by the hero.”
