#*sobbing* this is all i got#what do you mean I can't watch one tenth of a schoolism course and immediately understand how all of this works#this just in local girl cannot be average in skill she has technically never properly learned#the only logical conclusion to not being perfect immediately is that I must be a failure as a human being#yes that sounds logical

Your backgrounds are so impressive and I always really struggle with them. Do you have any tips?
Hey!
I gotta be completely honest cos I honestly don't know what I'm doing most of the time, especially when it comes to backgrounds, haha. It's still something I try to improve at. I'm happy to hear that you like them tho!
When I do draw backgrounds, I like to stay simple. I'm mostly focused on drawing characters, so when I do draw backgrounds, I add them to compliment the characters, rather than to distract from them.
I'm not the right person to give tips on this though, but I'd like to redirect you to some great resources:
I'm currently taking a class over on schoolism. It's a class by Airi Pan on Foolproof Concept Art, it's been super helpful so far! The subscription is 30€ a month, which I know is a LOT for many people. For me as well, but I'm just paying this one month for this class and then I'll cancel it until I'm done with art school, cos I'm planning to take more classes afterwards. But if you can afford it, I can really recommend checking it out!
But there's of course also amazing free tutorials, for example:
Tips for Drawing Backgrounds! by BaM Animation
Perspective Drawing in Photoshop! Grids and Tips by BaM Animation
How to Paint Envirenment Concept Art by Victor Staris
How To Draw Figures in Perpsective by David Finch
YouTube is PACKED with incredible art tutorials!
I also made this PDF with art resources for my fellow art school students a while back, so maybe it's helpful for you guys as well! Feel free to download it. It's in german, but it's mostly just links anyways! :)

Here I am once again with even more well deserved praise! I swear on god and pray to satan, your lightning, coloring and rendering skills are beyond my comprehension. And I envy your talent for depth and perspective. Would you be fine in telling us how you got where you are today? What books you read or videos you watched? What helped you to improve each day? Maybe you have your own tips and tricks you'd be comfortable to share with ur dear worshippers 👀🙇♀️ Aside from that I hope you have an amazing week and are feeling quite fabulous!
Here's a list of the resources that helped me the most!
YouTube:
- Proko
- Marco Bucci (basically all you need to know about painting)
- Sinix design
Books:
- Andrew Loomis, Figure drawing for all it's worth and Drawing the head and hands
- Michael Hampton, Figure drawing: Design and invention
- Anatomy for sculptors
- Framed ink
Other:
- Airi Pan's course on Schoolism
- Asaro head (simplified planes of the head)
Tips:
- Study a lot and hope that it sticks (?
- Check values in grayscale
- Don't get attached to something that isn't working, aka polishing a turd
- Don't prioritize style over fundamentals unless you understand what you're doing
I'm still figuring out how to art myself but I hope this helps :)
Have a nice week!

@pineapplecrispy Long art talk under the cut, so all the other people don't have to listen to my ramblings about process:
I usually just add grids for the perspective and draw it freehand for most of my pictures, but for this one I actually built myself a blender model because I knew the roof would be super annoying to construct. It isn't difficult to draw if you know how perspective works as it's mostly just cubes, but it would take forever, because it has so many little parts. So I built this little room:
Once you know blender you can do this quite fast. There are a lot of youtube tutorials who teach the basics. (I learned it with a course on schoolism though.) Then I place my camera how I want it and used that as a reference to completely paint over it. Which means block all the colors in and paint it all, because I don't use an actual render of the scene (potato Pc haha). Here's my block-in (which means just the flat colors):
(The parts that look a bit rougher here are hidden by the characters, I don't bother to draw behind front layers haha.) Then it's just painting in wood textures and the light! The lighting is just painted freely, no reference there, but you can definitely look for several photos to get an idea how the lighting would behave in the situation you would like to have in your painting. For poses I usually draw it from imagination as well, but if i notice something is not working I shoot photos of myself to see what might be a better pose for a hand for example. And I do use something like "anatomy for sculptors" when I need to draw muscles and such. But I do think it's best to draw the pose you want from imagination first even if it's a bit wrong and then go over it again to fix it with the help of your photo refs. At least that's how I think you will get better at drawing from imagination in the long run. But you do you!
Hope that helps!

(i bork at you)
🦜 Which artists inspire you?
oghhh hi ria :3 i think art inspos say a lot abt what kind of art you wanna create and care about, so this was a great question to chew on...!! i bork back at you
mead schaeffer
the legend!!! amazing use of limited colour schemes, clear and elegant value structures (i love those flat blacks against the more rendered forms)
beautiful expressive brushwork !! it seems schaeffer was more interested in the overall impression and mood, so he didn’t bother with super realistic details… i strive for that kind of confidence HAHAH overall he’s great at knowing what parts to refine and what parts to leave more simple. there is so much to learn here
yoshimura seiji
YOSHIMURA-SAN…how are you real? what goes on in your head when you draw? his art was my phone lockscreen for the longest time, because it is absolutely stunning. there is an overwhelming sense of calm and peace in his work, as if time had stopped, and he captured the essence of that moment. no joke!!! such subtle use of textures and light on top of incredible compositions… there aren’t enough words in any human language to describe his work
his art can be found here! it is somber and beautiful and makes the soul ache
alphonse mucha
he is known for his art nouveau work which is a feat in itself (insane stuff), but i primarily get inspired by his paintings!! “the tree of life” especially takes my breath away bc it has such beautiful transitions between shades of blues and yellows.
the other painting here is called “the slavic epic - cicle I” and the composition (the colors, values, placement of people and objects) actually crit hits me it is that powerful… stunning blues that flow into brighter cyans, and then far in the back, leading the viewers eye into the distance, that reddish pinkish hue rising up into the sky is just hhejagzudawhakdsz . this is real and someone made that and we somehow manage to wake up every day and be normal!!!! wtf…
nathan fowkes
truly mesmerizing color compositions… they really remind me that art is pure magic and i can never tear my eyes away from his work. i also watched a couple of his courses on schoolism (the composition one is my favorite, but the daily color workouts also slap) and they were incredibly helpful!!
looking at these paintings again actually makes my heart feel like its beeing squeezed fr HEHJKGZUASD (POSITIVE) i feel like he really understands the emotional aspect of color so well. I STRIVE FOR THIS SKILL !!!!
bato dugarzhapov
it’s like he can condense and intensify and capture the color and light of a moment and put it into his art… i study the colors of his work a lot. looking at it is like looking through a lens that lets you see the truth of nature and life (no joke!!)
and five million more artists ofc!!! for brevity's sake i cannot mention them all but art truly is a mystical weird thing that exists in our lives. eternally grateful!! HAVE A GREAT DAY FRIEND!!!
#chitter chatter#looking at this list again i rly like color+light and strong atmospheres...waow. i like them way more than i thought HAAHA#letter (ask tag)

What brushes do you use? I love you style! 😍
i switch up my brushes a lot depending on my mood, but here's my current lineart brush lineart
i usually just render with lasso fill and blur tool recently, but i also use hard round with pressure opacity too! kinda depends on the piece and the mood i'm going for
but here are some other packs i enjoy a lot airi pan's brush set (you can grab them if you take her schoolism course)
Giorgio Baroni - Ink brushes (i use 04 most often, but ive touched a few of the other ones for textures on the recent jt art)

Week six done! This time, we had to combine elephants with another animal. I picked a red river pig since their coloration is mammoth-adjacent. Plus, they're cool-looking animals! I also tried some more detailed rendering, a more sophisticated layout, and I'm beginning to approach a workable fur texture. This week concludes the new designs; for the remainder of the class, we'll be working on a narrative illustration. By the way, that text blurb from the image is below the cut!
The Red Forest Elephant lives in the boundary between forest and grassland. Its preferred diet consists of roots and shallow aquatic plants which it accesses by digging with tusks. The short trunk is quite dexterous and can be used to manipulate objects or search the bottom of a river. Red Forest elephants live in small family groups and are skittish when it comes to human interaction. Males have larger tusks which are used for display and foraging.

Been listening to Craig Mullin's Schoolism course on Digital painting, and did a little experiment.
Safe to say i don't know what I'm doing and I don't think I did a good job BUT I enjoyed doing this and have been getting inspired by listening to the course so it's still a WIN ❤️

Your art is so beautiful! Any tips for digital painting?
Idk how specific you want me to be but I’ll assume ur asking as someone with not a lot of experience? I personally struggled with digital at first bc it felt very artificial if that makes sense. There’s crazy skilled artists that can make masterpieces using only a circle brush but i had to experiment with a lot of different brushes to find one that felt right so i suggest playing around w different brushes. I use yuming li’s brushes from her gumroad as well as airi pan’s brushes which you can get from her schoolism course. There’s a lot of rly good youtube channels that teach digital painting, what i found rly helpful was watching speedpaints just to see how someone draws specific materials like skin, metal, hair, etc
#I’m a visual learner so seeing someone’s progress step by step is just as helpful as a tutorial#ask#lmk if u have more specific questions i love helping ppl w art
