Sent in prompt, surprised pikachu face when it gets filled 😼
Such an amazing fill!!! Also of course Carra immediately thinks of Gary (few years down the road and they get together and Wayne and Becks learn of it and go duuuuuuuuh)
But actually I would love to prompt that second part and obvious Gary being hit on!!! Sounds delightful
me: I'm gonna write more fun silly bits with Gary being hit on by sweet baby boys Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard!
me: oh no I've turned it into world cup angst. oh no.
---
Michael is young, and excited, and he’s scoring a lot of goals.
It’s a bit frustrating to be spending most of his time on the bench, but even sat on his arse doing nothing he’s still breaking records, he’s still here, at a world cup. And maybe soon he’ll come on, and he’ll score some more goals, and then everyone will love him.
Maybe he’ll even get a kiss from Gary Neville. He’s seen him do it before, with his teammates from United. Not so much with England, but then there’s not been much opportunity to celebrate with England. Not yet, anyway.
It’s strange, Redders had warned him about the United lot when he’d first got called up. About Gary in particular – he’d said don’t let him get to you, he’s a grumpy old bastard stuck in the body of a Take That reject. But then he’d got to England camp and Gary had been perfectly civil to him. Even nice, sometimes. Maybe it’s just because Beckham is being nice, always checking up on him, asking if he’s settling in okay. And even Michael, new as he is, can see that where Becks leads, Gary follows.
Whatever the reason, he has been nice to Michael. And Michael – Michael has a tendency to be drawn to bossy defenders, doesn’t he?
The second time he scores a goal in the tournament Gary does come up to him and grab his face, but all he gets is a quick press of lips to his forehead. Maybe that’s fair enough, they’re only 16 minutes in – can’t be getting too cocky, not yet.
It’s one of the worst feelings in the world, to play for 120 minutes, to score two goals and still lose. Michael wishes he’d never had to find that out.
Later, they all filter silently back to their hotel rooms. Incey and Macca give him hugs, ruffle his hair and tell him he’ll get used to it, then go into Macca’s room with a bottle of vodka that they say Michael is under no circumstances allowed to try.
Gary’s pressed up close to Scholes, whispering in his ear as they walk down the corridor, but when they get to Scholes’ room he just gives him a slap on the back and lets him go in alone.
Once Scholes’ door is shut, Michael watches as Gary turns to stare despondently at Beckham’s door for a while, making no move to go in, or to go to his own room next door. It’s just the two of them still out here now – Michael’s not really sure why he’s not gone back to his own room, gone to call his mum and maybe have a bit of a cry. That can wait, though.
He steps up to Gary, who slowly turns to look at him with dead eyes.
“You did well today, Owen,” he says gently. “You did the very best you could. This is just – it’s just England. And tomorrow – tomorrow, all anyone’ll be talkin’ about is –" he jerks his head towards Beckham’s door with a world-weary sigh.
He’s only a handful of years older than Michael. Too young to look so exhausted, so absolutely shattered. Michael takes another step towards him, puts his arms around him in a tentative hug.
Gary chuckles, pats Michael on the back. “I’m alright, kid. Honest.”
He starts to pull away, and maybe Michael’s a little bit stupid because he takes the chance to tilt his head up, to press their lips together in a chaste kiss.
Gary breaks it quickly, gives Michael a tiny little smile, then he glances back to Beckham’s closed door.
“Get some rest, yeah?” he says quietly. “Tomorrow’s gonna be rough.”
*
Stevie is under a lot of pressure.
He’s too young to be a captain, too young to bear that kind of responsibility on his own. Every year that goes by without a trophy chips away at him that little bit more, the expectations and disappointments of the fans piling up until he can’t see a way out. At least when he’s at England the pressure is off a little bit, there are plenty of more senior players to share the load.
Except even at England, there’s nobody he can go to to offload what’s on his mind. The United and Chelsea players are in their own little gangs, and he can’t exactly turn to his Liverpool teammates and say I think if I don’t get out of Liverpool soon it’ll eat me alive.
Frank is nice to him, at least. Obviously he has to be nice to him, has to try and lure him down to London, but he does still seem genuine when Stevie has a chance to speak to him. Not that he gets many of those chances, because every time he tries there’s always Carra, lurking in the background glaring at the two of them.
Mickey’s miserable, Stevie, he’s always saying, imagine what they’d do to you. You can’t look like you’re trying to move up, you’d never be able to come home again.
Carra can be a bit too much, sometimes. Or most of the time. He loves him, but it’s hard to make an objective decision when you’ve got the reddest of all reds as your best mate.
Speaking of reds, there’s one that’s been looking at him funny all week.
Unlike Frank, Gary Neville has never made any attempt to be nice to him. He’s never made any attempt to be nice to anyone, so far as Stevie’s aware. Maybe to Beckham, but everyone knows he’s got a thing for him so it hardly counts.
It’s actually kind of refreshing, to train with someone so unable to hide his disdain of everyone outside the United bubble. It’s refreshing to train with him, just generally. He works hard. He makes everyone else on the team work hard, a job that at Liverpool would usually fall to Stevie and Carra.
And when they’re on the pitch, he’s
different. Maybe it’s just his way of being professional, but he treats every member of the squad the same as he would one of his little United pals. It’s a lot of hugging, which had been weird when Stevie was first coming up but which now is expected, almost welcomed.
He’s shorter than Stevie, and he’s scrawnier too, but when he’s got his arms around you he feels solid. Warm.
All this to say, when he knocks on Stevie’s door one night he thinks sure, why not, and lets him in.
Stevie’s never actually done this before, at least not at England camps, but he’s not completely naïve – he does know how these things work. He sits down on his bed when Neville enters, leans back and props himself up on his elbows, bites his lip.
Neville doesn’t look at him, though, doesn’t make a move. He paces the floor, eyes darting all around.
“Look, Gerrard,” he says weakly, “I know you’re gonna say no, but the boss asked me to – just to see, what you’re thinkin’ of doin’ next season.”
Oh.
He immediately jumps on the defensive, sits up straight again. “None of ‘is fuckin’ business, is what I’m doin’. Is that the only reason you came here?”
“I – obviously, y’think I’d choose to spend an evenin’ in a Scouser’s room?” He scowls, then seems to remember that he’s meant to be making United seem appealing so quickly adds “I mean, you’re a good lad and all, I’d sooner be in ‘ere than with your mate Carragher. Though to be fair there’s not many people I wouldn’t choose over ‘im, he’s a fuckin’ lot, in’t he?”

Literary theorists being AHs to women and PoCs
‘cause if I have to suffer, then you should also know how much of an AH these people are, so you can examine if their theories are even worth believing or if you SHOULD pay attention to their blind spots instead of saying it’s irrelevant to literary discussion. Personally, I think the fact they are unwilling to mention PoCs, particularly Black people and willing to actively dump on women is very relevant to current academic discourse. You can’t ignore Kant’s views on women, and see that the majority of the people who won in the end were people who showed hatred towards women.
Robert Scholes being an AH, Page 26-page 28 (Hilarious, but also homophobic and misogynistic) For context, EM Forster is gay, which makes this really homophobic.

‘Cause you see folks, the only decent writers in the world are men, cishet men. (notice the sharp sarcasm here).
E.M. Forster on Gertrude Stein (From Aspects of a Novel, a series of lectures he gave)

Granted, a Modernist (and gay himself, openly so at the time he gave this lecture), but still, the dumping on Gertrude Stein seems to be a tradition that extends to other people afterwards (Rowe did it sideways, Lajos Egri, directly). Seriously? Dump on the lesbian Jew trying to encourage ways to describe TRAUMA. OMG, we shouldn’t talk about trauma.
But I disagree heartily--we have entire story structures devoted to dreams that play with sense of time and reality *because* of Gertrude Stein. I mean, how could you conceivably get Inception without Gertrude Stein’s theories of how to move language and time? Besides that, you have Dream Diaries (Japanese), Dream Record (First Chinese then Korean--not imported into Japan because there was a war), and then the whole of Dream Time from Aboriginals which predate her. Non-linear storytelling has and can work--but you need thematic plotting to be stronger and tone plotting to really be tight (pacing helps, but isn’t as critical as the other two). Thank the Modernists for the European white version. I mean, Magic realism, anyone???
If you want to find ways to break linear time and describe trauma itself, and the feeling of missing time--Modernists are your best bet to find techniques to get you there. (Kinda Post Modernists, though I resent the focus on readers a lot--I heartily disagree, BTW, that Structuralists and Post Modernists are the same thing... as argued in this paper here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/B0080430767039516.
Post Modernists tried to find further ways to break the rules and structure by bending to the reader.
Structuralists tried to impose a bunch of rules and binary. Like say, the panopticon and prison system/School system. There’s rigidity everywhere with Structuralists and Eurocentricism.) Or as the Raw and Cooked put it, a binary of acceptable and unacceptable, when some cultures don’t work off the Bible. So I think this paper here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/B0080430767039516
is more likely.

No one is surprised that its all men mentioned, right?
But what makes ignoramuses bad writers is not just their inexperience in fair argument. All great writing is in a sense imitation of great writing. Writing a novel, however innovative that novel may be, the writer struggles to achieve one specific large effect, what can only be called the effect we are used to getting from good novels. However weird the technique, whatever the novel’s mode, we say when we have finished it, “Now that is a novel!” We say it of Anna Karenina and of Under the Volcano, also of the mysteriously constructed Moby-Dick. If we say it of Samuel Beckett’s Watt or Malone Dies, of Italo Calvino’s The Baron in the Trees, or Kobo Abe’s The Ruined Map, we say it because, for all their surface oddity, those novels produce the familiar effect. It rarely happens, if it happens at all, that a writer can achieve effects much larger than the effects achieved in books he has read and admired. Human beings, like chimpanzees, can do very little without models. One may learn to love Shakespeare by reading him on one’s own—the ignoramus is unlikely to have done even this—but there is no substitute for being taken by the hand and guided line by line through Othello, Hamlet, or King Lear. This is the work of the university Shakespeare course, and even if the teacher is a person of limited intelligence and sensitivity, one can find in universities the critical books and articles most likely to be helpful, the books that have held up, and the best of the new books. Outside the university’s selective process, one hardly knows which way to turn. One ends up with some crank book on how Shakespeare was really an atheist, or a Communist, or a pen-name used by Francis Bacon. Outside the university it seems practically impossible to come to an understanding of Homer or Vergil, Chaucer or Dante, any of the great masters who, properly understood, provide the highest models yet achieved by our civilization. Whatever his genius, the writer unfamiliar with the highest effects possible is virtually doomed to search out lesser effects.
Gardner, John (2010-05-20T23:58:59.000). The Art of Fiction . Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.
OMG, give this guy a prize, he managed to mention a Japanese man Kobo Abe. /s https://literariness.org/2019/04/15/analysis-of-kobo-abes-novels/ But then fails to mention the names of the authors of some of the novels he’s talking about (I’m literally begging Writer’s Digest, Knopf, etc to force these people to give better citations)
The closest he gets to noting a Black person is noting American Jazz on the page where Chapter 2 starts, and then fails to mention Jazz musicians. No, I’m serious. What makes a person an AH? The inability to mention a single work in 1983 by a female author?
Though the fact is not always obvious at a glance when we look at works of art very close to us in time, the artist’s primary unit of thought—his primary conscious or unconscious basis for selecting and organizing the details of his work—is genre. This is perhaps most obvious in the case of music. A composer writes an opera, a symphony, a concerto, a tone poem, a suite of country dances, a song cycle, a set of variations, or a stream-of-consciousness piece (a modern psychological adaptation of the tone poem). Whatever genre he chooses, and to some extent depending on which genre he chooses, he writes within, or slightly varies, traditional structures—sonata form, fugal structure, ABCBA melodic structure, and so forth; or he may create, on what he believes to be some firm basis, a new structure. He may cross genres, introducing country dances into a symphony or, say, constructing a string quartet on the principle of theme and variations. If he’s looking for novelty (seldom for any more noble reason), he may try to borrow structure from some other art, using film, theatrical movement, or something else. When new forms arise, as they do from time to time, they rise out of one of two processes, genre-crossing or the elevation of popular culture. Thus Ravel, Gershwin, Stravinsky, and many others blend classical tradition and American jazz—in this case simultaneously crossing genres and elevating the popular. Occasionally in music as in the other arts, elevating popular culture must be extended to mean recycling trash. Electronic music began in the observation that the beeps and boings that come out of radios, computers, and the like might sound a little like music if structure were imposed—rhythm and something like melody. Anything, in fact—as the Dadaists, Spike Jones, and John Cage pointed out—might be turned into something like music: the scream of a truck-tire, the noise of a windowshade, the bleating of a sheep.
Gardner, John (2010-05-20T23:58:59.000). The Art of Fiction . Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.
Iunno, is it glaring to you? It’s glaring to me. Avoid talking about Black people challenge. I can name at least a few off the top of my head. Dizzy Gillespie? Billie Holiday? Ella Fitzgerald? And then he mentions white people before then? I’m groaning.
And that’s the thing, particularly about Black authors/Black people, they are either not mentioned by name, but their work is--WTF, or totally skipped, probably because the whole of Black literature goes against these white men’s structuralism, and postulations. On one hand, I’m glad they left them alone, but on the other, the saying this is the only way, while glaringly missing the obvious really is sickening.
As for dumping on women--well... should we go back to Aristotle being an ass and starting the whole anti-choice campaigns because somehow Aristotle is Jesus, even though Jesus didn’t say anything about Ensoulment at conception? And then indoctrinated white women trying to rescue Aristotle from taking the axe because all of his scientific ideas were wrong? (Just axe him--he was popular with the Victorians for a reason--he was a misogynistic asshole and that reinforced their worldview very well.) (And if you think I don’t have references for the anti-choice statement... oh wait for it... I so have it)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ensoulment Wikipedia, but I found scholarly articles too--not sure you want to be buried with that. Aristotle is not Jesus. !@#$ And Aristotle thought women got their soul later than men, because, as I said, royal asshole, to the point I want to do a whole long rant about how much of an irrelevant ah he was.

Le Double - s/t LP
Diamantakiou's compositions are a bold fusion of dub, post-rock, and the 70s of Miles Davis. They're rich in form, moving from heavy riffs to angular grooves. The band delivers the complex dynamics of the pieces with power, and each instrumentalist brings his own character to the long improvised developments. This first opus includes episodes of ambient electronic abstractions which give way to powerful rhythms and lively solos. The album presents a unique form: two ensemble pieces recorded live and remixed by Zach Scholes (Kee Avil) and two completely electronic pieces inspired by the concept of remix. The bassist and composer uses sampling and layering techniques inspired by the pioneers of dub and the dense drones of dark ambient in the tradition of Lustmord, Shane Embury, and Bill Laswell.  StĂ©phane Diamantakiou - Basse, Ă©lectroniques, composition GeneviĂšve Gauthier – Saxophone alto Scott Bevins - Trompette, Ă©lectroniques SĂ©bastien Delorme - Guitare SĂ©bastien Sauvageau – Guitare, synthĂ©tiseurs David Simard - Batterie Robert Pelletier - Vibraphone, batterie DĂąvi Simard – Électroniques Zachary Scholes - Sound design

What`s another year!
So as we put 2023-24 to bed, we reflect on a campaign that saw us four points clear at the top after seven games and dreaming of the promised land. However, the joy was short lived as results began to fade and after beating Birmingham at home on 19th September we won just four of the next twenty two league games before beating Ipswich on the 3rd of February at Deepdale. It was a shocking sequence of results and to go almost half a season winning just four games would have been way too much for plenty of owners. North End saw fit to retain the services of Ryan Lowe and the Ipswich win was the start of a five game run which saw us win four and draw one. We were, once again, incredibly, on the brink of the play offs but a draw at home against Hull was the start of a final twelve game run in that saw North End take just eleven points from the thirty six on offer which is relegation form in anyone`s book. We won three, drew two and lost seven of those final twelve games including losing the last five games on the trot. In those two runs of twenty two and twelve games we won just seven out of thirty four which is an appalling return. I know people will say we finished tenth on one of the bottom six budgets but if money were all that were needed in football then why would clubs bother employing a coach. Ipswich have spent just 4.2m and look where they will be starting next season!
I wanted a change after the defeat to QPR in December as I had seen more than enough of the brand by then. Lowe bought himself some time with the results in February and hopes were raised as we clung on to the tails of the play offs. However it is much more than the brand on the pitch that made up my mind about the manager. The comments about fans and badges was the end for me, for in what other business would a company slag off or disrepect the opinion of it`s customers? The fan base is undoubtedly split on Lowe but I talk to many people and I would say that at least two out of three of the fans would like a change in the hot seat. The manager has calmed down a little since those appalling comments in December, no doubt some sage advice coming from above as to his future conduct and comments in the media, but he still has rather an annoying habit of throwing his charges under the bus in his post match comments.
Anyway, enough about the manager as thoughts move to next season. With Millar and Browne gone North End need to strengthen and if Lowe insists on playing the wing back system then he needs to buy two wing backs. No doubt there will be a good take up on season cards once again as North End have a very loyal fan base in spite of everything. 63 years without kicking a ball in the top flight is an appalling record and while the current owners have little to do with the first fifty years of that it is worth mentioning that North End had four Championship play off campaigns between 2001-2009 and have had none since. No doubt people can make their own mind up about that stat. My fear for next season is that the club have put all their eggs in one basket with the manager and if we get off to a poor start then the club will have nowhere to go with most of the fan base saying I told you so. However, we all hope that scenario does not happen and that the close season investment is wise and appropriate. We could possibly have new owners by then, who knows, and things may look very different. I have no doubt that the Hemmings family will sell for around the 40-45m mark, to the right investors, but sometimes with new owners you have to be careful what you wish for. For now we can only wait and see how things evolve between now and August 10th, but the club feels stale at the moment and something must be done before the new campaign begins to freshen things up.
And finally this week:- whilst waiting to get off a very slow moving car park at West Brom last Saturday I had the pleasure of bumping into Nick Scholes and his good lady wife. For those who don`t know Mr and Mrs Scholes have given immeasurable support to the youth set up at Preston North End over many, many years. Nick was very proud as he told me that the youth team had won the Alliance league last Saturday morning, therefore completing the league and cup double this season. There are many unsung heroes at football clubs up and down the land and if we had a competition for the PNE unsung hero then my vote would, undoubtedly, go to Mr and Mrs Scholes for their enourmous contribution to the Youth set up at Deepdale. Thanks Nick, and it was a pleasure, as usual, to meet you and your good lady again last Saturday.

Rosso was the first of about thirty persons, found guilty in the Sessions and in sittings of the County Criminal Court, to come up for sentence.
"I hope the sentence will be a warning to his fellow countrymen."
John Gowans goes to the Central Prison for six months for a serious offence. 'I am told that he is feeble-minded," pleaded T. C. Robinette, K.C., but Judge Denton declared that his long record was against him. He served two years in 1899, terms for theft in 1894-97-99, and one this year. [Gowans would later be sentenced to the penitentiary in 1918...]
Harry Rollings, also up on a serious offence, was remanded for sentence. His Honor wanted to enquire into his case further.
Long Term for Theft. On two charges of the theft of registered letters, William Albon, a clean-cut, looking young man, was given three years in Kingston Penitentiary - the least possible under the code. It is said that the young fellow, who was employed as a clerk in the post office, received only about $4 in money.
Verney Pennock, convicted of burglary and assault, was sent down for four months. He broke into Alexander Cameron's livery stable on Keele street and stole five books of Exhibition tickets.
Sentence was suspended for two weeks in the case of David W. Ross and Morley Wilson, charged with taking W. E. Radcliffe's automobile from In front of the Grand Union Hotel. The young men, who were somewhat the worse for liquor, went for a "joy ride," which ended at an early hour in the morning. The motor car was damaged to the extent of $60. Mr. Robinette pleaded for leniency on the score of youth and good character, specially in the case of Wilson.
Three Months For Theft. "He pays too much attention to athletics and has not been well. The trouble is that he is overstrained," was the plea of T. C. Robinette in the case of Arthur Scholes, champion mile runner of Canada, and who came third at the Ward Marathon games last Saturday. He had pleaded guilty to the theft of two diamond rings from No. 190 Garden avenue, where he had gone to do papering.
"The man who was with me told me that the rings were lying there. First I said not to take them, and then I picked them up on the impulse of the moment as we were leaving. I gave one to him, and gave the other to a friend."
"A woman friend?" asked his Honor. "Yes."
The young man's father and mother both pleaded hard.
"What happened to the other man?" was asked. "He turned King's evidence."
"I can't afford to let you go," said his Honor, "you will spend three months in jail."
A fine of $50 and costs or two months in jall was the sentence given Charles Hall for assaulting Evelyn Ferris.
His Honor started to read a list of previous convictions when Hall declared: "You must have me mixed up with somebody else. I didn't do those things."
"That must be another case," suggested Crown Attorney Greer. "Why don't they do things right in the Police Court?" said his Honor with some heat, then turning to the prisoner he asked: "What terms have you served?"
"I was in jail once for six months and once for eight months."
"Both for assault?"
"No, just one of them."
Six Months For Perjury. William J. Cottrell, found guilty of perjury in a damage suit against the Toronto Railway Company, stood up quite calmly to receive sentence. He was chewing gum. He wanted to call witnesses to testify to his good character.
"You are found guilty on a very serious charge," said Judge Denton, "Perjury is one of the worst of crimes, and
"I could send you to the penitentiary for a very long time. You probably didn't realize what you were doing."
"It was all a mistake your Worship." broke in the prisoner eagerly.
"The evidence showed it was much more than a mistake. You probably, when you found yourself in that suit against the street railway, thought that you could win by stretching your statements a little. I have spoken to a number of people about you and they all speak highly of your character."
"If your Worship will let me go on suspended sentence I promise" interrupted Cottrell.
"I cannot do that" said the judge gravely. "You will be sent to the Central Prison for six months."
Was Allowed to Go. Wilfrid B. Watclyn, guilty of the theft of an automobile from the Shaw Overland Sales Company was allowed to go on suspended sentence. "He is making reparation," his Honor was told.
George Westman was remanded for sentence on the charge against him of stealing oil waste from the Simpson Wool and Knitting Company. Mr. Greer was told to investigate his story.
Three months was the sentence meted out to Joseph Davis, convicted of a serious offence. The girl, who was his second cousin, was feeble-minded. Davis' reputation in the past was excellent, and Judge Denton was lenient.
Rev. J. D. Morrow bore testimony to the good character of Albert Copley. convicted of hitting Walter Dwyer over the head after having consumed several bottles of beer. "I have every hope of reforming him," said the athletic parson. "He is a member of my church." The judge remanded him for two weeks for sentence.
G. B. Cates, for false pretences, was remanded for two weeks. He sold $210 worth of stock to Mrs. G. B. Thomas in the Artificial Ice and Distilled Water Company, a concern which was not in existence, and was given a chance to make good to Mrs. Thomas. Because Julius Bachrack is away on business, he and his brother, Emanuel, will come up again for sentence for conspiring to procure an illegal operation, in two weeks, as will David W. Ross and Morley Wilson, theft. The cases of Estella Smith, theft; Norman Tansley, indecent assault; F. A. Mansell, false pretences, were all stood over.
Remanded For Sentence. Harol Harold McKee, convicted of obtaining money under false pretences from his employers was remanded for sentence till the December Sessions. He was anxious to make restitution and was gradually doing so out of his wages.
The same treatment was accorded to Arthur Doyle, convicted of criminal negligence, who took a motor-car from in front of Shea's Theatre last July, and went for a joy ride. His sentence will depend on the efforts he makes to make good the damage.
Sixty days is the sentence on Frank McCarron for horse stealing. He hired a horse and later, together with another man, sold it. "It's cost me $200 now. I got all the blame, while the other man was discharged," exclaimed the prisoner, but he was sent down, nevertheless.
David Applebaum, Abraham Manhan, David Reece, ranging in ages from 16 to 20 years, employed at Hanlan's Point, where they stole amounts of from 70 cents to $10, were allowed to go on suspended sentence. Joseph Re, who got two $5 instead of one in making a sale also had sentence suspended.
Clinton Shaw and Ernest McRae, found guilty of stealing solder from J. C. McFadden, were allowed to go on suspended sentence. Both are of youthful appearance.
[AL: Albon was 17, born in Toronto, a first time offender, and was convict #F-485 at Kingston Penitentiary. He worked as a clerical assistant in a workshop, had no reports against him for breaking the prison rules, and was paroled in late 1913. Rosso was 29, born in Italy, a labourer on the docks, and had never been in the penitentiary before - he was convict #F-486 and worked in the quarry. He had no reports and was released in early 1915.]

Kitman Labs Launches ‘The Football Intelligence Platform’ For Premier League Academies
Kitman Labs, the sports technology and analytics company setting the industry standard for how elite sports organisations use data, today announced a new partnership with the Premier League.
The partnership will provide all Premier League club academies with a centralised, fully integrated ‘Football Intelligence Platform’ designed to aggregate and mobilise player and staff data across coaching, medical, sports science, operations, player care and education.
Data for academy players will be centralised in one platform - providing participants and coaching staff with a comprehensive, unified and real-time view of players’ medical, performance, training and development profiles.
The platform gives academies data accuracy and the ability to conduct advanced analytics at a league, club, or player level. Staff will manage player pathways through performance benchmarking and personalised development plans, in addition to providing tools, reporting, insights and actionable data to achieve specific operating and performance outcomes.
The goal of the Premier League’s Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) is to not only enhance the pipeline of homegrown talent for the professional game but also to ensure academies provide life-enriching experiences for all players, empowering them to fulfill their potential on and off the pitch. The Football Intelligence Platform will also provide clubs with the ability to track and support players’ progress in their social, educational and cognitive development and will help serve as a holistic record for each player.
The platform will be supported by dedicated staff and a player app (iOS and Android), to support the need for frequent and instant access to player data on the pitch, in the training room and on the go.
Stephen Smith, Kitman Labs Founder & CEO, said: “Data’s value can only be realised when it’s consistent, accurate, pervasive and directly aligned with the fundamental operating and performance objectives of the league or club.
“The Football Intelligence Platform has been developed to aggregate and leverage all data sources in a single platform to ultimately drive collaboration across the organisation(s), eliminate information silos and provide actionable intelligence. That intelligence will be used specifically to systemise talent development and player pathways as well as support and validate data-led decision-making related to coaching methodology, best practices and policies.”
Tony Scholes, Chief Football Officer at the Premier League, said: “The EPPP aims to create unrivalled development environments where every young person is supported to maximise their potential on and off the pitch. Innovation and insights are key elements of this work, to ensure we are informed and evidence-led in our decision making.”
“This partnership represents a significant development in how clubs and the Premier League can use data to support elite player development and personal growth across all club academies. Through this first-of-its-kind strategic partnership, we and our clubs will have access to world-leading technology and support, equipping us with the tools and knowledge to help the development of players.”
Kitman Labs has an established track record of working with top governing bodies, leagues, teams and athletes across a variety of sports, including soccer/global football, basketball, rugby, and American football. The company's technology has been used by leagues and teams in some of the world's most elite sports organisations and universities including the NFL, NBA, MLS, NWSL and NCAA.
This partnership with the Premier League follows other recent business strategy moves Kitman Labs has undertaken including the successful acquisition of The Sports Office (TSO) and Presagia Sports, both made in the last two years. The combined companies represent the industry’s largest network of elite and youth organisations (1000+) and created the industry’s largest dataset of talent, performance, and medical data for all stages of the athlete lifecycle.

Marcus Rashford sends clear message to Ten Hag about his preferred position
Tumblr media
Marcus Rashford sends clear message to Ten Hag about his preferred position Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United forward, has openly admitted his preference for playing on the left wing instead of other positions in the attacking line. During a conversation with club legend Gary Neville on the latest episode of The Overlap, Rashford elaborated on why he favors the flank position over being in the number nine role. In the previous season, under Erik ten Hag's management, Rashford was used in various roles, and there were instances where he had to take up the central striker position for the team. The outcome of this tactical flexibility was Rashford's best goal-scoring season to date. Recently, he inked a new contract, extending his tenure at Old Trafford, and managed to score an impressive 30 goals for the Red Devils in all competitions. He told Neville, “ left-wing, although I feel like centre forward you have less distance to cover to score simple goals. Whereas when you are on the left wing, if you are late sometimes making the back post is a 20-30 yard sprint.” “If the striker pulls to the back and you’ve got to go across the front, then it’s another 15 yards. I prefer the left, I feel like on the left it’s easier to stay in the game. From even when I was younger I always wanted to stay in the game, that’s why I think I struggle playing centre-forward sometimes because I struggle with patience.” He added, “You might not touch the ball for twenty minutes and then your first touch might be an opportunity to score, you have to be mentally switched on and it’s almost like being a goalkeeper. You might not be involved in the game for god knows how long but when it’s time to make a save, they have to make it.” The 25-year-old individual explained that as he has grown older, he has developed a greater appreciation for being the lead performer in a team. When asked about the toughest opponent he has faced, Rashford mentioned Manchester City's Kyle Walker. The United academy graduate acknowledged that Walker's physicality and incredible speed make him nearly unbeatable, but the key to dealing with him is to catch him off-guard or exploit his positioning. Regarding the best player in the Premier League currently, Rashford acknowledged Erling Haaland's record-breaking season but believes Kevin de Bruyne has been the standout star for the past four or five years. Rashford revealed that his favorite captain at United was Wayne Rooney, and when asked about a legendary player he'd love to share the pitch with, he expressed his admiration for Paul Scholes. When asked about the best character he's encountered in a dressing room, Rashford pointed out Zlatan Ibrahimovic, noting that he remains true to himself no matter where he goes. Startup Valuation Accounting Standard
Startup Valuation Accounting Standard usually follow generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) to record and report their financial transactions. These standards ensure consistency, transparency, and comparability in financial reporting across businesses. Key components of accounting for startups include:
Financial Statements: Startups prepare three primary financial statements - the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement - which provide an overview of the company's financial performance, position, and liquidity.
Revenue Recognition: Startups must comply with revenue recognition principles, which dictate when and how to recognize revenue from product sales or services rendered. Proper revenue recognition is crucial for startups, especially when dealing with subscription-based or long-term contracts.
Expenses: Startups record their operating expenses, such as marketing, salaries, rent, and administrative costs, in accordance with GAAP or IFRS guidelines. Careful expense management is vital for startups to maintain financial sustainability and attract potential investors.
Depreciation and Amortization: When startups purchase assets, such as equipment or intellectual property, they must depreciate or amortize these assets over their useful lives following the relevant accounting rules.
Equity Accounting: Startups may issue equity to early-stage investors, employees, or founders. Equity accounting ensures accurate recording of equity-based transactions and reflects ownership changes.
Startup Valuation Methods:
Cost Approach: This method determines the startup's value based on the cost incurred to create the business. It includes the expenses associated with research, development, and initial setup.
Market Approach: The market approach compares the startup with similar companies in the market that have been recently sold or valued. This method relies on comparable company analysis (CCA) and considers metrics such as price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios or revenue multiples.
Income Approach: This approach estimates the startup's value by considering its future income potential. Methods like discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis calculate the present value of projected cash flows to arrive at a current valuation.
Venture Capital Method: Often used in early-stage startups, this method determines the value based on the desired rate of return for the venture capitalist's investment.
Option Pricing Models: In startups with complex capital structures involving convertible securities or employee stock options, option pricing models like the Black-Scholes model are used to estimate the value of these instruments.
While there is no specific accounting standard for startup valuation, professional valuation consultants apply these methods to determine a startup's value accurately. Furthermore, it is essential to understand that startup valuations can vary widely due to the uncertainties and risks associated with early-stage companies. As the startup landscape is constantly evolving, accounting practices and valuation methodologies may adapt over time to meet the unique challenges and needs of startups. It's recommended for startups to work with experienced accounting and valuation professionals to ensure compliance and obtain reliable valuation assessments.
