my current project: jump forever!
Tumblr media
this is the first of those scheduled posts i mentioned earlier!!! i figured i would start by talking about my current project - that way i can start posting updates about it without confusing you, Michael. The next post is gonna be about the beginning of this whole Godot thing i've been on, and then i'm thinking about maybe doing a Before Godot post as a bonus once i've talked about all my godot stuff (i love saying this as if anybody cares (besides you, Michael)). setting all that aside, though: this one's gonna need some backstory, so you should buckle in.
around this time last year, me and my little cousin (he's still in high school, but we've always been pretty close) got really competitive about a little game called Jump Forever. it's a side minigame from WarioWare Mega Microgames (the GBA one) where you just jump over a little rope until you fuck up. it's really fucking fun as an addictive little mobile game, and with a quick lil emulator it was one. thus, the addiction began.
Tumblr media
truth be told, the phase last year didn't even last that long, but i had a long bus ride a couple of weeks ago and found myself opening the GBA emulator on my phone to pass the time. that led to a little bit of playing at home, which led to beating my cousin's score, which led to getting even more into the game than i was before. as our scores get higher, we've turned to better controllers than a phone touch screen for serious record attempts - i use a ds lite i had lying around (that i reshelled! it was very fun) and he emulates on pc with a controller (i think). this got me thinking about a potential "definitive edition" of the game - probably still on mobile, but with controller support, better touch controls (the game only needs <-, ->, and A!), faster resets, selectable skins, and maybe even unlockable skins? of course, when i finished my work on fnaf (ooh foreshadowing), my sights were immediately set on a Jump Forever remake.
Tumblr media
with all that said, welcome to the game as it currently stands! at the moment, i've got wario, the rope swingers, and the score all just about set up, with one exception; the characters have collision, the rope swings (at varying speeds, even!), and wario's speed and physics feel very accurate - but i'm still working on the ai (if you can call it that) of the rope guys as they walk back and forth. i want it to work exactly the same way as it does in the original but i always overthink random mechanics like this. hopefully the next update i give will be about how i cracked it! even if the implementation ends up jank, though, it wouldn't be the first: the rope guys check if wario is too close to them to make it over the rope with an Area2D that just checks for wario when the rope hits the ground. it works! i could just like check wario's position in the code (and it'd probably be way more efficient), but this way just... works.
i still have a buncha crap i still gotta implement before the game's even really playable - the walking ai, the title screen, the little "Ready?" animation, etc. - but that's only the beginning of my work. firstly, i'm probably gonna enlist chloe (oooh foreshadowing) to help me out by drawing some new assets (if she's free, it is finals season), and then changing the game's native resolution from 240x160 (the GBA screen) to something not fucking insane. i've got "reworking all the sprites into easy to read spritesheets" on my to-do list, and after that, making the new assets (and then maybe the skins?) will be as easy as drag & drop. once it's got the new assets and all the polish that needs to come with a shiny new resolution, i'm gonna transition into the next phase - researching how to release a game!!!
[hi, not to ruin my own amazing transition but: it's 5am and i'm running back to edit this because i completely forgot to mention that i have currently implemented a 2 frame input delay on all inputs, because that's how the emulator appears to behave when i go frame by frame. every single day i rethink this decision more and more. surely there's no way that's how it's supposed to be, right? but i feel so weird changing it now!!! i definitely fucking have to though. next time i work on it. ok anyways]
now. i've posted games to itch.io before. but even then, i kind of fucked it up (i could never get the resolution of my web games to work right???) - so it's no surprise i've always been completely daunted by the idea of "releasing a game". when you post it on real stores, that's when it becomes... real. i'm excited about the new challenges it'll pose, though! now, a mobile release means a couple of things - bite sized fun, simple progression, and fun customization. i've already got the first part nailed down, and i figured i could nail the other 2 at once with a currency system based on how many points you get (or maybe even an xp system? that goes up 1 for each jump? maybe even both???) and skins (purchasable with said currency) that let you customize the player, rope swingers, background, and maybe even the rope itself.
Tumblr media
pictured above is my stupid ass skins mockup (i literally just made this). the rope is rainbow, the background has a snow effect and a bunch of snow on the trees/ground (isn't it great?), wario is a lil version of the rope guys, and the rope guys have santa hats. i'm not sure how many different ropes you could really make with how i'm planning the rope to move, so i'll probably end up prototyping the graphics with chloe to figure out how to lay out the sprite sheets, and if they should actually have a seperate hand-grabbing-the-rope sprite for skin purposes. it'll definitely make things really confusing, but if i go for a mobile release i don't want to run ads, and so a currency you can buy with real money (and maybe one or two goofy supporter skins that cost real money, like a solid gold guy or something, as a form of donation) is a good way to make a lil bit of money from people who like the game.
all of this is fun to think about, but it's important to remember that the next thing i have to do is that walking ai. i've gotta Make The Fucking Game before i can do all this crazy other bullshit. i'm sure the ui design for all this is gonna be soooo fun, but i need a game to attach it to first :p
this went on reeeally long but i figure if this is a dev diary or w/e it's gonna end up running long no matter what, and the more info, the more i have to look back on fondly and say "oh shit, i know exactly when this was!", which is kind of the end goal of the project. of course, these incredibly long posts about shit that only matters to me are also incredible content for you, Michael, so i'm sure you're just eating this shit up. enjoy, you weird little man.
#game dev#jump forever#godot#yeah yeah i got some real tags too. just in case i actually need em.#also michael's still here. i think he's funny#it's only been like an hour for me soooo#remember when i said it was 1am in my first post? it's 4am now lol#i looove tags i love rambling under my post where people don't feel obligated to read it#nobody ask me why i have the stickmen swinging the rope instead of kat/ana like it is after you beat them#(he said as if anybody would've noticed)#i think the stickmen are so much more awesome and the fact that you can't get them back is SO FUCKED UP#and lowkey one of the things that got me thinking about Jump Forever Definitive Edition#kat and ana are awesome the stickmen just resonate with me deep in my soul#i'm not proofreading this i'm just hoping it sounds good. really putting the “diary” in “dev diary”#man. im so glad michael is the hypothetical ideal viewer. because that means he's reading all the tags too#hi michael! ur the best :)#scheduling this for saturday at noon (it is currently friday at 4:30 am)#i hope i get the chance to write the next one (about that 2D platformer tutorial!) before like. monday.#god knows i'm not doing my homework lmaooo#when's my next therapy appointment?#that's crazy deep lore we can't get into that on post 2 (honestly post 1)#but it's okay because nobody reads the tags#and that's not even considering that nobody is ever gonna read this post. ever.#besides michael.#but michael knows all about that ;)#or maybe he doesn't... and it's a sexy mystery?#my my i am such an enigma#okay fuck i can't keep adding tags i need to sleep#i really hope tags are collapsed by default or michael's timeline is gonna be in shambles

Best Times To Post On Social Media In 2024 (Platform By Platform)
Tumblr media
Ever wondered why some social media posts seem to explode with engagement, while others vanish into the digital abyss? Timing plays a crucial role! Posting when your target audience is most active significantly increases the chances of your content being seen, liked, and shared. Connect with us to hire us as your social media agency.
But with different platforms having unique user behaviors, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Fear not, fellow social media warriors! This blog dives deep into the best times to post on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Pinterest in 2024, giving you the tools to conquer each platform.
Why Timing Is So Important?
Tumblr media
Cutting Through The Noise
Social media platforms are flooded with content. Algorithms prioritize posts receiving immediate engagement, pushing them to the top of feeds. Posting during peak hours ensures your content has a better chance of being seen before it gets buried by the next wave.
Relevance In The Moment
Imagine sharing a delicious recipe at midnight. While it might look mouthwatering, the timing is off. People are more likely to engage with content relevant to their current activity. Posting during peak hours for specific content types (e.g.,recipes during lunchtime) increases the chance of immediate interest and interaction.
Building Habits And Anticipation
Consistent posting times create a rhythm for your audience. They know when to expect your content and are more likely to check your page at those times. This consistency fosters a sense of community and keeps your brand top-of-mind.
Instagram: Catching Those Scrollers
Tumblr media
Instagram is a land of visuals, and timing your posts to capture eyeballs is crucial. Generally, weekdays are your golden ticket. Here’s a breakdown:
Monday to Friday Mornings on the Move (5 AM to 9 AM): People tend to scroll through Instagram during their commutes or coffee breaks. A visually captivating post between 5 to 9 AM can grab their attention as they start their day.
Lunchtime Likes (12 PM to 2 PM): As the workday hunger pangs hit, people often reach for their phones. A lunchtime post (around 12 PM to 2 PM) might be the perfect distraction (and potential food inspiration!).
Evening Cheers (5 PM to 6 PM): As the day is about to end, people scroll it for post. But if you want to post reels then 9 pm-8 am is the ideal time.
Saturday & Sunday (9 AM to 2 PM): On weekends people want to sit back and relax and that is why they scroll through these ideal times.
Facebook: Finding Your Facebook Fam
Tumblr media
Facebook thrives on a mix of personal and professional content. Here’s when to target your audience:
Midweek Musings (Wednesdays, 3 PM): The middle of the workweek often sees dips in productivity. A Facebook post during this time might be a welcome break for your audience.
Funday Thursday and Fridays (1 PM to 4 PM ): Thursday and Fridays bring a lighter mood. Schedule a post for around 01 PM to 04 PM catch the pre-weekend excitement and get those shares rolling.
Weekend Wind-Down (Saturdays & Sundays, 12 PM – 1 PM): People relax and socialize on weekends. A Facebook post around noon or 1 PM on Saturdays or Sundays can be a great way to connect with your followers on a more personal level.
LinkedIn: Reaching The Professional Realm
Tumblr media
LinkedIn is all about career building and networking. Here’s how to time your posts for maximum impact:
Weekday Mornings Monday and Friday (7:30 AM to 8:30 AM): Professionals are typically active on LinkedIn during work hours. Target them with informative posts between 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM and noon on weekdays, when they’re checking updates and making connections.
Lunchtime Learning Mornings Monday and Friday (12 PM ): The lunch break is a prime time for people to catch up on industry news and thought leadership. Share valuable content around lunchtime (between 12 PM) to position yourself as an expert.
Evening Monday and Friday (5 PM – 6 PM): As the workday wraps up, professionals might be reflecting and planning ahead. A post around 5 PM or 6 PM can spark discussions and establish you as a thought leader in your field.
Tuesday (10 AM to 11 AM): The second day’s morning of the week generally motivates people to check updates and build valuable connections.
Pinterest: Pinning At The Perfect Moment
Tumblr media
Pinterest is a visual discovery engine, and timing your pins strategically can significantly boost their reach. Here’s when to target pinners:
Monday to Sunday Post-noons are for Window Shopping (2 PM – 4 PM): People often browse Pinterest for inspiration and ideas in the evenings. Schedule your pins for this time slot (between 2 PM to 4 PM) to catch them in their planning phase.
Fun Friday (3 PM): Post lunch on friday people are relaxed, so 3pm is an ideal time to attract people.
Weekend Creativity (Saturday Mornings, 8 PM – 11 PM): Weekends are for pursuing hobbies and DIY projects. A Pinterest pin showcasing on a Saturday evening (between 8 PM and  11 PM) can inspire and lead to saves and clicks.
It’s A Social Science, Not An Exact Formula
While these are general guidelines, the best time to post on social media ultimately depends on your specific audience and content type. Here are some bonus tips to optimize your posting strategy:
Know your audience: Who are you targeting? Understanding their demographics and online habits is key.
Analytics are your allies: Utilize platform insights to see when your audience is most active and engaging with your content.
Experiment and adapt: Don’t be afraid to try different times and track the results.
Post consistently: Regular posting keeps your brand visible and builds a loyal following.

TL;DR
I bought a car via Carvana and it was not a good experience. I’m not gonna say don’t use the service but I am gonna explain the hell that was the past week and let you be the judge on whether or not you want to.
So, as I’m sure everyone has noticed, gas prices are really high. I have a round trip commute of about 60 miles every day so I’m sure you can imagine how much that affects my wallet. A few weeks ago I started researching cars that would both be better on gas and not cost me more in the long run. I came across an electric version of my current car and thought it would be a great option to remove gas cost from my budget. I spent roughly two weeks doing research on how fast it charges when plugged into a normal home outlet, the range the battery can get you, everything. From what I found, the car I had settled on should take,at most, 12 hours to reach full capacity and had a range of 90 miles. I did the math and that seemed like it would work for my purposes. The monthly payment was only $70 higher than what I currently pay and with the subtraction of gas cost I would actually save money. Taylor and I took the plunge and purchased the car. Friday the 18th the car was delivered and the first sign that this might be a problem became evident. They delivered the car with less than 10% battery. By the time we had completed the test drive we had 5 miles of range left. We plugged it into our outlet and were very displeased to see that it was going to take more than 22 hours to fully charge. That’s twice as long as it was supposed to. So, I got the car 10am Friday and couldn’t drive it until the next day. After it had charged all night it wasn’t even at 50% battery. We started getting worried that I wouldn’t have enough charge to get to and from work and even if I did, it wouldn’t charge enough to get me to and from work every day following. We checked again at 11pm Saturday night and it still said it was going to take 10 more hours to get fully charged. It was charging roughly 2 miles per hour. I realized I wasn’t going to make it for work in the morning. I was up worried about it until almost three AM. I woke up Sunday, called off of work and then notified Carvana that I needed to use their 7 day return policy. They couldn’t get me my car back until Thursday. That’s not helpful because I work until almost 6pm Sunday-Thursday. So now I have a car I can’t do anything with and 4 more days of work. I need a rental. Awesome. So I go get a rental car for 5 days and schedule the swap for 9 am Friday. I confirmed with customer service twice that they would be bringing my car back and picking up the one I bought. Fast forward to Friday 7:15 am and I get a text from Carvana asking to push back the car pickup to noon. I had an appointment in Fort Wayne at 11 and I had to return the rental by 1. I called to explain this and discovered that the person coming for the car I purchased was unaware that he was supposed to be bringing my trade in back to me. Awesome. He contacted his manager and then his manager contacted me and said my car was in a storage facility with 30 thousand other cars and it wasn’t possible to get it back to me today. I explained that’s not gonna work for me because I’m not gonna pay for another week of a rental when none of this was my fault to begin with. He said he would look into some stuff and get back with me with a solution. I never heard back from him so an hour and a half later we spent 45 minutes on the phone with customer service and finally got an answer. We were told that they located the car and would complete the swap asap. We mentioned we wouldn’t be available between 11-2 and they said no problem they’ll be there at 3. Then I got a text when I was in Fort Wayne dropping off my rental that they would be there at 2. I rush home and they show up at 1:45. I gladly signed the new car back over to them and took the keys back for my car. It was not a good experience. I did request they pay for the rental and am currently waiting for a confirmation on whether they will or not. The only good thing that came from this was they filled the gas tank on my original car. When you factor in that I had to pay for the gas in the rental that means I paid $200 to not get a new car.

Yesterday
What time did you wake up? I woke up at 9:30 AM, extremely parched and hungover from the night before. Though I dunno if I should say the night before, since I was in a video call with my college friends from 9 PM to 5 AM, lol. But anyway, we drank a lot and talked a lot and it was SO much fun. I can’t believe it took us 10 months to do this.
Where were you sleeping at? I slept in my own bed, as always.
What was for breakfast? My dad made pancit with pork and vegetables. He also made a bowl of lugaw meant for both my mom (who’s currently on a diet) and for me (since he saw I looked wrecked, and lugaw is a popular hangover food).
What did you wear? I was wearing a black halter top and shorts during the day, but I took a shower in the afternoon and changed into a striped tank top and a new pair of shorts.
Did you go to school? Nope. I did visit UP with Andi last Friday and it felt so uhfjfdlsfsdfh being there. It was such a range of emotions, knowing I haven’t been there since March, I never got a proper senior year experience, seeing all the barriers blocking the streets that lead to the buildings that now double as COVID isolation facilities; and, of course, knowing that this was the place I shared with Gabie for four years and now she isn’t even a part of my life anymore in any way.
Did you go to work? No, it was a Sunday.
What was for lunch? My family always has breakfast really late, so it already doubles as our lunch. I think we were all in the living room to watch a mass livestream during noon.
What was for dinner? My mom made some kind of creamy pasta with toasted bread on the side.
Where else did you go? I stayed home yesterday since I had already gone out last Friday night with Andi and to recharge from my 7-hour call with friends last Saturday. Plus, going out would just tempt me to spend when I have barely anything left from my last paycheck, hahaha.
What did you do there? I just had a Worth It marathon all day. I also finally got up to speed on the independent channel of BuzzFeed people Shane Madej, Ryan Bergara, and Steven Lim called Watcher. I remember subscribing as soon as they launched the channel a year ago but never had time to watch their any of their series. But I finally did, and it turns out I was missing out so bad; their content is pretty great.
Who did you talk to? Well I was up until 5 AM from the night before, and in that call were Blanch, Lui, Jo, JM, Kate, and Laurice. The day after, I talked to my dad, mom, Nina, Andi, and Angela.
Who did you hang out with? Just myself. Me time is super important to me, especially on Sundays.
Who did you text? My phone remained off for most of yesterday.
Who did you call? Didn’t need to call anyone, either.
Anything else about yesterday? By 5 AM only Kate, Laurice, Jo, and I were left in the call since the others got sleepy; we ended up talking about Nacho and thinking back to the time he passed away and sharing our own stories. That was sad, but also therapeutic. Andi also shared photos of them wearing the skirt I gave them for Christmas and I was super happy to see them feel confident in it.
Today
What time did you wake up? I first woke up at around 6:45 AM, but I went back to sleep and woke up again at 7:30. I usually get up to start work at 8, so I spent the next half hour trying to wake myself up and shake off the anxiety I was feeling.
Where'd you wake up at? Again, my bed.
What's for breakfast? Skipped it. It’s my lunch break now and my stomach’s been growling like crazy all morning, so after this survey I might go downstairs and find something to munch on.
School today? No school for me. In general, I think law school is off the table for good. JM told a lot of horror stories covering the toxic culture in law schools all over the country and it’s just...I just don’t think it’s worth it to go through the things he touched on just to get a law degree, especially since I’m not even passionate about being a lawyer. I just thought it could be an option since I like memorizing stuff, lol.
How about work? Yeah, I have work but it’s 12:10 so we’re on lunch break.
What's for lunch? I still have to see.
Dinner? Not sure. My dad usually makes delicious dinner though so I don’t think too hard about this.
Who did you talk to today? I’ve talked to some of my colleagues at work - Ysa, Bea, Denise, Danielle, Pia, and our newest associate Aimee, who starts today and who I already know since we went to college together and took up journalism - and I’ve also talked to Nina, Angela, and Kate.
Who'd you text? Nobody; I don’t really text anymore unless it’s for work. My weekly promo actually expired yesterday so I wouldn’t be able to text unless I redeem that promo again.
Who'd you call? I was in a video call with my work team this morning for our weekly check-in. Then I have three more work-related calls lined up this afternoon.
Anywhere else you're going? I plan to be at home for the rest of my shift and to stay home in the evening so that I have enough time to recharge before tomorrow morning.
What are you doing there? ^ Oop, already touched on that.
What did you wear today? I’m still wearing the same striped tank top + shorts combo from yesterday.
Anything else about today? I hate how anxious I get every Sunday evening/Monday morning before work when things have always ended up being more than okay 10 times out of 10. I don’t know where the nerves come from when I do my tasks correctly and on time, anyway. What matters is I’m settled now at work and I’m just looking forward to finish my shift.
Tomorrow
What time are you waking up? Same time, since I have the same routine every weekday. Sigh, I miss the variety that college life gave me - even things like having my first classes at different hours of the day every weekday already provided a lot of excitement. The 9-6 set-up + WFH can feel so lonely sometimes.
Where will you be waking up? I sleep in my bed like 98% of the time but I also end up passing out on the living room couch sometimes. I can never tell, so this is a question mark for now.
What are you going to eat for breakfast? I will probably skip breakfast as always. If not, I imagine having scrambled eggs, hotdogs, and a couple slices of white bread.
What are you going to wear? I’ll just pick out housewear items from my drawer.
Are you going to school? No.
Are you going to work? You know it.
What are you going to eat for lunch? I don’t plan this far ahead.
What are you going to eat for dinner? No clue but again, my dad will 100% whip up something delicious as he always does for dinner.
Where else are you going? I’m only staying at home since I will need a strong, consistent internet connection to be able to work. This goes for every weekday too.
Who will you talk to? The people I’ll surely talk to are Ysa, Bea, Pia, Danielle, and Aimee since I work with them daily. My parents and sister, too.
Who will you text? I still can’t tell, but probably no one.
Who will you call? I have one Google Meet call scheduled for tomorrow, but we’re 26 in the group and I’m not in the mood to list everyone’s names down.
Who will you hang out with? I’ll only be with myself. My friends are busy with their own stuff on weekdays too, so it’s okay.
Anything else about tomorrow? It’s one day closer to the weekend so it’s something to look forward to.
In conclusion...
What day of the week was yesterday? Yesterday was Sunday.
Today? Monday.
Tomorrow? Tuesday.
What was the date yesterday? January 17th.
Today? 18th.
Tomorrow? It’ll be the 19th.
Which of the three days do you think will be the best? Sunday was obviously the best.
Why? It was the weekend andddd I got to sleep in.
Which one do you talk to more people? Monday is usually the busiest day at work, so I think it would be safe to assume I’ll be talking to more people today compared to yesterday and tomorrow.
Call more people? My Monday schedules will occsionally be flooded with scheduled work-related video calls. I have four for today alone, but I’m already done with three; the last one isn’t until 4 PM.
Text more people? It always differs.

Weird question, but you seem really productive despite seeming to have a constantly fluctuating routine, with both your work and your hobbies. Most people think having a solid routine is the only way to increase your productivity but I've pretty much given up on having a routine since my life seems similar to yours--a lot of travel, weird and always changing work hours. Do you have any advice on how you deal with routine and productivity in spite of that?
Oh gosh, this is definitely something I struggle with a LOT, and I’m not sure I’ve found a coping strategy that works for me yet. But the small things that have been helping have been (1) keeping a routine in my planning even if the stuff I do changes dramatically (even if I’m traveling, I have a notebook where, every Sunday, I list all the stuff that has specific dates/times for the following week, I list the stuff where I still have to come up with a date/time, and I list the stuff I’ve gotta do that week for sure), and (2) finding multiple ways to approach the same goals that I can tailor to my level of energy/spare time on any given week (so this week I’m just not in a super exercisey mindset and can’t rely on having the motivation to run every day, but instead I’m making an extra effort not to eat out this week—lower-effort for my current state of mind, but all toward the same goal of feeling a bit healthier overall).
I’m also very cognizant of how little time at work is actually spent working, so I try not to feel guilty if the total number of hours worked is low as long as the work’s getting done. I’m an incredibly routine-oriented person, but it’s been a bit freeing to slowly and steadily teach myself that stuff just has to get finished one way or another, and the easiest way to do that is to just focus on specific goals and let the rest be flexible.
Anyway, yesterday I was thinking of this ask and was like, “You know, I’ll just write up what I do on Monday as an example, and I bet things will go hilariously awry.” And so they did.
So here’s what my weekly planning list looked like last night:
Dated Events:
Call with paper coauthor at 9AM Monday
Call with leadership academy planning committee at 10AM Monday
Call with peer mentoring group at 9AM Tuesday
Sit in on class at 11:30AM Tuesday and Thursday
Seminars Wednesday at 3PM, Thursday at 4PM, and Friday at 3PM
D&D Saturday at 6PM
Undated Events:
Coordinating abstract submission for an upcoming conference (early week)
Setting up Skype calls with a couple friends I haven’t talked to in a while (late week)
Assorted Priorities:
Book hotel for work travel in July
Accept journal article review request and scope out how long that’ll take
Review some materials sent out for my peer mentoring call
Revise my paper and submit the revisions before the Monday deadline
Get my driver’s license renewed (the joys of yearly visa renewal… your license has to be renewed yearly as well)
Put together a schedule for a biweekly Twitter feature highlighting new publications for the account I run for a subcommittee in my field
Respond to an e-mail about a conference in January about some weird deadline that popped up for next week
Come up with conference abstract ideas before the as-yet-unscheduled meeting
Fill out some action items in advance of my 10AM Monday call
And some more specific checklists for four research projects I’m focusing on this week
I purposely try to group conference calls together, because I currently share my office and feel weird doing video calls when she’s stuck in frame five feet away from me while she tries to work. So Monday seems like a good day to work from home, and I can squeeze in Tuesday’s call before heading to the office that morning. I’ll be in the office Tuesday-Friday, which means I’ll be able to attend those seminars and classes with no problem. I have most of my D&D prep done already because we ended early last game, so I can leave that until Saturday. The only thing I might have to shuffle to next week is the driver’s license thing, because it’ll take three hours and I have to account for finding a Lyft there and back. Okay. Aces.
Wake up this morning to find my internet’s out, and I also somehow left the hard drive with all my research on it at work. Hoo boy. But staring over my to-do list, I think I can set today up as a “big picture” day and not have to do any actual coding, so I’m still okay to work from home. I can also phone in to the conference calls instead of using the video call software. All good.
Luckily, the internet comes back right before my first call of the day. Said call is with someone who also happens to be a dean, so she has a tendency to get held up at meetings, so I take that delay to look at the action items for my second call (I mean… if you send me action items at 8PM on a Sunday I am not gonna touch them until Monday morning).
When she did make it online, we chatted about the new paper, and she strongly encouraged me to send it to our other coauthors in case they have suggestions. We’re submitting on Monday, which is way too short-notice to read a 20-page research paper, but they already read the pre-revision version in great detail, so I shot them an e-mail that included a summary of the substantial changes and a note to the effect that if any of them want more time to look at this stuff, I can beg the editor for an extension on their behalf. Minor crisis averted.
Second meeting is very intense and structured. Everyone has to volunteer to organize and lead two webinars in the next three months, so I go ahead and volunteer for the two April ones so I’ll get it out of the way early. Aaand the first webinar is at 1PM this Friday. Okay. I’ll work from home that morning so I can do last-minute prep, then head into the office in time for the 3PM seminar. No biggie. One organizer puts together a draft schedule, and I send a quick e-mail suggesting a different use of one of the ten-minute time slots. One of the other organizers requests another conference call tomorrow instead of e-mails. I tell them I can only do after 4PM, if I leave work early. Eh. We’ll see how that works out.
After the call, I get through a bunch of small tasks in maybe 20 minutes: hotel booked, Twitter posts prepped, review request accepted (not due until May 20, so plenty of time on that), conference deadline e-mail chain started. I spend the rest of the time before noon getting sucked into an article someone sent me about the myths surrounding undergraduate grade inflation and then reading up on the peer mentoring materials for our call tomorrow. A couple other minor e-mails pop up (scheduling the precise date of a conference mixer in January, that kind of thing) and I manage to deal with them right away.
Lunch! Clearly working from home means I should take the opportunity to indulge in some fine cuisine, some leisurely cooking that highlights—
I heat up a microwave meal (chicken couscous) and watch YouTube videos for an hour.
Back in it! I write up some abstract submission ideas and make a valiant attempt at setting up a time to talk about them, but it looks like that might have to wait until next week. We’re still a ways before the deadline, so that’s okay.
Mmmmmmm someone on Twitter mentions a conference in Germany in September and a workshop in Colorado in July that both look like a good fit for my research. I’m in a situation where I have a big chunk of travel funding that’s going to disappear unless it gets spent in the next year. Oh no. But also oh yes.
Just in case, I put together a couple point-form ideas for stuff to propose that I can bring to the people holding the purse strings.
The rest of the afternoon is spent putting together weekly goals for four of my research projects: each one involves a collaboration with a different person, so I’d like to be able to send each of them an e-mail with at least one new thing to share about that project this week. Just in case that doesn’t happen, though, I rank them from most to least important. Worst-case scenario, I don’t have to send any of them this week, but it’ll make next week tougher if I don’t.
It’s only about 3:30 at this point, but honestly, I’m feeling a bit exhausted and overwhelmed (some of the e-mail chains have gone through five or six replies at this point and keeping it all straight is giving me a headache), so I opt to get some groceries and call it a day.
I may have added some stuff, but I got a lot crossed off today! Here’s how that last checklist looks at the end of the day:
Assorted Priorities:
Revise my paper and submit the revisions before the Monday deadline
Project #1: come up with a new exploratory figure and send to Person A.
Project #2: summarize the early results I started last week and send to Person B, along with an ask to see whether he’d be up for me presenting this stuff in Europe in November.
Project #3: improve on figures I showed last month and send to Person C.
Project #4: prepare a rough outline of the next paper to send to Person D.
Not having my work hard drive means I was able to just focus on the stuff that wasn’t specific to research today. In all the chaos of today, I’ve set myself up well for a research-heavy rest of the week where I (hopefully) won’t have to worry about non-research stuff or big changes to the schedule and can just burrow into research, emerging for occasional seminar/webinar breaks. A good Monday, all around.

So my aunt thinks I should tell my paper that this is my last week and leave the last week of the year for them to deal with finding a replacement, instead of me waiting to quit in January. Please read the next part before answering this question: If you were me, do you agree with my aunt, and would you tell my boss at the paper that this is your last week, or wait until January to quit like they asked me (or practically begged me lol) to do?
My work schedule as of right now for both jobs:
I deliver papers Tuesday through Saturday at noon to 5 (I can finish everything in ~2 hours)
I work at Walmart Friday-Tuesday at 10pm to 7am (I will have Christmas Eve into Christmas Day off, as Walmart is closed on Xmas Day) I get 2 15-minute breaks and one 1-hour lunch break
My sleep schedule as of right now:
After my shift at Walmart, I get home at 7:15am or so and I go to sleep until noon or 2pm to deliver newspapers until ~5pm
After I finish my route, I try to go back to sleep until 8pm, so that gives me ~2 hours to be awake and get ready for me to go to Walmart at 9:30-45pm
My health for both jobs:
As I'm not used to walking around for several hours a day, the bottoms of my feet and my shins/ankles pay the price at Walmart. My mental health is normal thanks to my medication
Riding my bike doesn't hurt my legs too bad, but I don't get to have much time to let me feet and legs rest before going to Walmart 4-6 hours later. My mental health is normal bc of my meds, but before I was working at Walmart, I was getting really sick of my job, hence why I was looking for new employment in the first place
If you've made it this far, thanks for taking the time to read! Under the read more is my overall opinion, what my family members think I should do, and asking the question in the title again, so please continue reading before answering. Thank you <3
My overall opinion:
2 weeks left doesn't seem like too much trouble. I've worked for the paper for over 13 years, so what's only 2 weeks more? I AM still capable of doing both jobs. Plus, having income for both jobs is a pretty good deal, especially with all the Christmas tips I get from my paper route customers
However, the point of working at Walmart was to let me quit a job that doesn't pay well and has been giving me mental health problems for the last several months. Bc of the paper calling me about me having to get a sub last Wednesday (there was a power outage and my papers wouldn't be deliverable before my Orientation at 3:30pm), I had to tell them about my employment at Walmart. Before, I wanted to wait until after Christmas to say anything, but bc I got to tell them last week, my boss asked me if I could stay on until the new year, so that they could get a replacement. I told them I would be okay with that at the time, but now I'm not entirely sure
Since my boss practically begged me to stay on for the end of the year, bc I'm aware of how understaffed they are, I felt guilty that I wanted to leave as soon as I was hired by Walmart, simply bc I've worked there so long and I care about my customers. But in the end, working for a company that doesn't pay me well is enough for me to want to finally leave, regardless of how understaffed the paper is
So far, I've been doing pretty okay doing both jobs bc I get to sleep quite a bit between both time frames, my only main issue currently is the pain in my feet and ankles/shins. If I want my physical ailments to go away so I can function my very best at Walmart, then the logical decision would be to finally quit the paper, let my feet and legs rest all day after my Walmart shift, and only work 8 hours a day
I asked mum what she thinks I should do, and she thinks I should tell work that Christmas week is my last week. My aunt says that's what I should do too. If I asked my dad, I think he would tell me to stick with it until the new year (tho his reasoning is bc that means I make more money in order to pay the rent, which I wanna raise to $500 a month thanks to the good bi-weekly paycheck from Walmart) I think my 2 siblings would agree with my mum and aunt too
So now that you've read all of that (if you did, thank you, I really appreciate your opinion on this matter) here's the question again from the title: If you were me, would you tell my boss at the paper that this is your last week, or wait until January to quit like they asked me to do?

Orientational Adventures
Now that I’m in my apartment, I guess I’ll write a blog post about my orientation time.
We stayed at the Princesa Plaza Hotel, which was a pretty nice hotel. My biggest complaint was on days that I didn’t have orientation, having to leave so housekeeping could clean the room, but that’s mostly just me being lazy.
It started when I dragged my stuff from my AirBNB near Sol Station down to the metro, and to the Arguëlles station. This proved difficult since I haven’t quite figured out the whole thing with finding the metro elevators yet. So after having the drag my suitcase up multiple flights of stairs, I noticed that I had exited the metro station from the furthest exit from my hotel, so I walked down the street and to the hotel.
I was ultimately worried because they had advised us to check in from 3-6 if we were already in Madrid, and this was like....noon. It worked out fine though. There were a few orientation leaders in the lobby directing people where they needed to go. Basically we needed to collect our orientation folder for CIEE, which contained the orientation itinerary, and our orientation meal stipend of 60€. After we got our folder, we checked in with the hotel itself. I was in room 465. Once I got settled into the room, I did what I always do. I took a nap.
Just a tip of the trade, and I’m thankful that I figured this out in Italy so that I didn’t have to ignorantly ask someone how to turn the lights on. There is a slot by the room’s door where you’re supposed to put your room key. This enables you to use the lights. I guess it cuts down on the electricity usage or something. But in my case, it would probably just result in me forgetting my key and being locked out. Because of this, I’m going to tell you (and I honestly probably shouldn’t) that any card works. I had a spare “Tarjeta Transporte” (transport card) that my landlord had given me that didn’t have anything loaded onto it. So yeah, if you’re like me, and are extremely forgetful, that’s something to ultimately keep in mind.
I was the first one to my room, and my hotel roommate wasn’t there yet. I wasn’t told who it was going to be, so I was ultimately curious. I sort of figured it out though, because there’s a guy in my program that had friended me on Facebook prior to coming to Spain, who had a flight arriving later that day. It turns out that he was my roommate. He eventually got to the hotel at 6 PM, with a LOT of luggage. If ya’ll are reading this and eventually plan to travel, pack light. It helps ;) No shade on you, Elie :P
Part of my intentions with this trip abroad was to actually develop the basics of a social life, which I have thus far been unable to accomplish. However, this Monday was not the day to do it. A lot of the participants in this orientation had just arrived in Madrid and were as jet lagged as I had been over a week prior, so I assume they all probably slept away some jet lag.
When it came time to fall asleep, I’m very finicky about how I sleep. I meant to ask my roommate if he minded if I used white noise, but he was fast asleep and snoring by the time I thought of it, so I just turned it on and it went fine.
So the next day began day 1 of orientation. When I took my shower that morning, I had to let the water run for a minute, because it was brown. No idea why, but it cleared up after like 10-15 seconds and was fine for the rest of the week. Went to breakfast, which was much more food than I could eat in my current condition. I got bacon and eggs, but I didn’t know that we were supposed to be served by employees, so I began to scoop it myself before I was promptly told otherwise. I managed to only eat like one piece of bacon and a few bites of egg. The egg had cream or something mixed in, so it was overly rich and I didn’t really care for it that much.
Our orientation activity scheduled for that Tuesday was a walking tour of the city. I’ll include the little bit of pictures that I took when I get to that part of the story. So first, I’ll say (and this is mostly for my own sake) that I was in orientation group #14. There were about 30 groups because they had to stay small because of COVID.
My orientation leader is a dead ringer for Clara Oswald from Doctor Who. Like, it astounds me how similar they look to each other.
I don’t know a lot of specifics about where we actually went, but I’m gonna try to piece pictures together chronologically.
We walked down the street from the hotel, and went to a park. We saw this statue of Queen Isabel
Tumblr media
We stopped at a place where we had a really cool view, and we did a quick “getting to know you” thing. I’m not a big fan of these kind of things. My go to fact before this summer was that I don’t know how to swim or ride a bike. Now, my fun fact is that I’ve had a gastric bypass, but I honestly feel like I talk about it too much. I might be overthinking things, but hey, it is what it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We saw this hotel along the way to finding the Palazzo. VVVVVV
Tumblr media
And this governmental building that I honestly don’t remember what it’s for:
Tumblr media
And then we found the Royal Palace of Madrid:
Tumblr media
After seeing this, we went towards the Teatro Real, which is right across from it. I later realized that we were super close to my AirBNB and that I had seen the Teatro Real earlier in my Madrid days.
Tumblr media
We went to the 100 Montaditos next to the Teatro Real, where I had a sugar-free iced tea. We went through Sol, and saw parts of the different neighborhoods throughout central Madrid. My hotel roommate almost got scammed by someone who handed him a sprig of rosemary and demanded money. We saw this thing...
Tumblr media
And then we proceeded to explore the different neighborhoods. Overall, we were out and about for like 4 hours. I was surprised that I lasted as long as I did without issue, but I managed it.
After that, I don’t really remember doing much else that day. I’m pretty sure I took a nap. That was honestly about it. I think I might’ve used a delivery app for the first time to get a Subway. But other than that, nothing of note.
The next day was a doozy. Breakfast was the same, and would continue to be the same for the whole week.
We went on another walking tour, except this time we took the metro to Sol and went from there. We went to Plaza Mayor.
Tumblr media
And got coffee in a cafe shown in the left of that picture.
Then we explored more neighborhoods of note, saw the cathedral next to the Palazzo:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also got a cool view of the Palazzo.
Tumblr media
We ended up in the neighborhood of La Latina, where we sat at a cafe and got food and drinks. I didn’t get food because it all seemed like either too much food, or stuff that I should have. I got a bottle of mineral water and nurse it the entire time we were there.
My orientation group decided that they would meet up with the afternoon group (we were in the morning) that my orientation leader had. I went too. When we left the initial cafe, we went back to the hotel. My orientation group went bar hopping between our orientation and the next, but I did, again, what I always do. I took a nap. Can I just say that siestas are amazing. Like, a designated time of day useful for a nap. That’s my kind of thing. I can dig it.
So, around 6ish, my orientation leader messaged our WhatsApp group and my orientation group said they were by the La Latina metro station, so I proceeded to go there, where I met up with them. We met the afternoon orientation group and went to a different cafe. The waiter at the new cafe was very outgoing and friendly. I tried to order a drink without carbonation and without sugar. At first he only heard the no sugar part, so he was going to offer me a Coke Zero, but I repeated myself and what he brought me was called Aquaade, which isn’t carbonated, but most definitely had some sugar in it. It’s kind of a mix of lemonade with Gatorade. I also had a slice of pizza from the pizza place next door, which was honestly my first pizza since before my liquid diet, which was at least like 4 months.
Through the course of the night, I stayed sober, which I would often do anyway, but even more so with the surgery. But I gotta say, watching drunk people while sober is almost as entertaining to be honest.
So I proceeded to socialize, which is honestly the most foreign thing to me so far. I just have never gotten the hang of that aspect of being a human. My natural state of being is to do what I’m currently doing: being a cave gremlin, sitting in a dark room looking at a computer screen.
Throughout the night, I was saying that I could act as a “designated pedestrian” which only one person took me up on, mainly since we were both going back to the hotel and I knew how to get there.
So that was quite an interesting day.
The next day was the last “orientation” day, despite us having the rest of the week with the hotel. For this, we just talked about the paperwork and bureaucracy that we had to deal with to get our Spanish residency. I then went to do part of the process, where you go into a bank to pay the fee and they stamp the document to bring to your appointment. I went to one bank, where they told me they couldn’t do it, so I went to next closest bank, who said they would do it, but that the timeframe was Monday to Thursday from 8:30-10:30. It was around 11 AM when I went.
Then I napped. Again.
I wanted to continue to try to socialize, but nobody was really answering me on the group chats. I got a little peeved. But I later found out that there was a group chat on the app GroupMe that I wasn’t on where people made plans, so it’s all good.
That night, I went and got a 1€ tapas from the 100 Montaditos down the street. I gotta say, the portion sizes for the 1€ tapas are perfect for me. This bag is legit smaller than my hand.
Tumblr media
I got a garlic pork with mayo sandwich thing that was the size of a finger food sub, with like 4 potato chips.
Friday I don’t think I did much of note to be honest.
Saturday I met up with a person in my program that was in a later orientation than me, who took me to an organized picnic for people that were in her orientation, so I met a few more people with CIEE, as well as a couple from other programs. We went to Retiro Park, which is a huge beautiful park. After the picnic, we walked a bit, and ended up going into a taco place near Plaza Mayor. I didn’t eat any tacos, but I had a sugar free iced tea. I conversed, which is part of that whole socializing thing that I’m attempting to expand upon and learn more about.
After the taco place, most of the group disbanded, but I went with two of them to a rooftop cafe, where I had an orange juice. Once we were done there, it was a girl in my orientation and a guy from a later one, so he went back to his AirBNB and the girl and I went back to the hotel.
The most I accomplished on Sunday was bringing my suitcase to my apartment so I didn’t have to lug it around on Monday, and boy am I glad I did. I brought it to my apartment and I chatted with my two roommates for a bit. It was also the first time that I had ever taken an Uber, because I was NOT about to drag that suitcase back down to the metro.
Oh Monday. What a friggin’ day Monday was. We were told in orientation that we had to get a COVID test on Monday at the earliest. And my biggest regret of that day was not going earlier. That day was when we checked out of the hotel, so I had my backpack of stuff on me. I had a polo and shorts on, and it was a bit brisk, but nothing horrible. I went to Unilabs, which we were told gave a discount to auxiliares so that it was only 85€ which we could get reimbursed for. If it cost more than that, we could only get reimbursed 85.
Anyway, I got there and saw a few friends from my program at the front of the line, and I saw the line was relatively long, so I went to the back of it. It curved around the corner, and moved really slowly. My initial place in line was by a hedge thing. I used that as a progress marker. After an hour and a half, I had made it about 20 feet. A few people of note were a guy in front of me from CIEE, who had not yet checked out of the hotel, so he had to leave to do that, and a older Spanish couple, who I could barely understand, but seemed just as irked as I was.
FIVE HOURS. I stood in line...... for FIVE GODDAMN HOURS to get this COVID test. The “bit brisk” weather I had previously mentioned, gets pretty damn cold after 5 hours in it. And this is a bit of a rant, but if you’re in that slow of a moving line, DON’T HOLD UP THE LINE BY SITTING DOWN AND NOT MOVING WHEN THE LINE MOVES!!!!! It happened numerous times and it infuriated me every single time.
I almost thought they were gonna close for an hour like their open hours say. I got there at 9 AM, and I got into the lab at 2 PM. After I got tested (the first test I’ve had where they swabbed both nostrils), I then went to my apartment. I took the metro from Moncloa to Embajadores, where I had to take a Cercanias (train) to the Orcasitas station. I got on the train going the opposite direction, which I realized and changed sides. When I got to Orcasitas, I met with my landlords’ son, who gave me my keys and I paid my first month’s rent to. Then I got settled in, which is where I am now, one day later.
I’m gonna wrap this up, because I feel like I’ve been writing forever, but that about sums up my time at orientation.

The degenerate’s guide to 2017 college football TV watch ‘em ups: week 5
Tumblr media
Schedules are getting a little better this week as we get into conference schedules and the Florida teams get back to normal.
I see some pretty strong matchups but the early kick games look kind of bad. Having USC/Washington State and Miami/Duke both playing Friday night in a TV doubleheader seems weird. Could have pushed the ACC game to Saturday morning and nobody would have been the wiser. I guess TV contracts don’t work that way, though, so here we are with this schedule. I feel the need to italicize that there are some strong matchups. It’s not a great week overall.
Times are, as per usual, Eastern and stolen from FBSchedules. All gambling advice is fully backed by RTARL’s “don’t ever ask us for shit” guarantee and comes with all requisite warnings that you are a dummy if you listen to me about anything ever.

Matchup                                               Time (ET)                         TV
Houston at Temple                              Noon                             ESPNU
I was caught completely off guard by Coach Ryan Gosling limiting Ed Oliver’s effectiveness last week but those things happen. When Khalil Mack was in college there were games where he was worked around by some truly awful teams and he was playing as an off the ball linebacker. Oliver should be back to normal this week.
Maryland at Minnesota                      Noon                                FS1
I can’t imagine looking forward to seeing this game.
New Mexico State at Arkansas         Noon                              SECN
This is a body count game for a middling SEC team and it’s still better than the B1G’s in-conference offering on FS1.
North Carolina at Georgia Tech        Noon                                ESPN2
Matchup of two very interesting coaches but also two not very interesting rosters. Could be a fun watch ‘em up but I won’t call it a “good” game.
Northwestern at (10) Wisconsin       Noon                                  ABC
Among the many things I can’t really explain about my college football fandom is a strong dislike of Northwestern football. Like I’m rooting for Jonathan Taylor to extract blood early and often in this game and I don’t really understand why.
Rice at Pittsburgh                               Noon                       RSN/ESPNCE
It just occurred to me right now that it’s really weird for Pitt to be insanely week in the defensive backfield. I know it’s only his second year there but isn’t Pat Narduzzi supposed to be sort of a scheme wizard on that side of the ball? Pitt has looked so bad so far that this game might not even be a gimme.
(18) USF at East Carolina                    Noon                                CBSSN
ECU isn’t very good this year. They never should have fired Ruffin McNeill. USF looks like they’re getting better every week so this could be a nice bloodbath.
Vanderbilt at (21) Florida                    Noon                                   ESPN
Florida could really lose to Vanderbilt in the Swamp and I wonder if even having two straight division titles is enough to save Jim McElwain if that happens.
Syracuse at NC State                          12:20 pm                     ACCN/ESPNCE
The ACC might be the best conference in the country top-to-bottom and they can still put up clunkers like this. Strength against whatever the strongest thing you can say about Syracuse is with NC State’s pass defense going against the Orangemen’s pass heavy offensive concepts. This should be pretty ugly.
Central Michigan at Boston College   1:00 pm                           ACCNExtra
Harold Landry reminds me of former BC star Mathias Kiawnuka for all of the good and the bad that might imply.
Baylor at Kansas State                        3:30 pm                              ESPN2
With Kansas State looking above average this year they should be able to beat Baylor by at least 30.
Buffalo at Kent State                           3:30 pm                               ESPN3
Tumblr media
Florida State at Wake Forest              3:30 pm                        ABC
Undefeated Wake Forest at home against winless Florida State. This will never be true again unless they play each other in a season opener.
(7) Georgia at Tennessee                    3:30 pm                        CBS
If I understand anything about these two programs Tennessee is going to win this game on a Hail Mary after getting down by 30 points in the first half.
Indiana at (4) Penn State                      3:30 pm                        BTN
Saquon Barkley is gonna get like 8 carries, Penn State is going to pull away in the third quarter to win by maybe 20. This looks like torture to me.
Murray State at (17) Louisville             3:30 pm                          RSN
These stats shouldn’t count for Louisville unless they are bad.
Navy at Tulsa                                          3:30 pm                         ESPNU
Navy playing a game on an ESPN feed seems sort of wrong to me. Other than playing Notre Dame on NBC they pretty much only ever play on CBS/CBSSN. Zach Abey has been pretty good this year (not up to his hype level from before last season yet) but Navy’s defense is pretty bad. Every game is an adventure with these guys. Tulsa has been terrible this year but they can score a lot.
Ohio at UMass                                        3:30 pm                       11 Sports
This is one of the worst possible games this season and Ohio will somehow beat UMass on the road by more than Tennessee beat UMass at home.
UTEP at Army                                           3:30 pm                        CBSSN
Last year was supposed to be a step forward for Army’s program but they’ve kind of sucked so far in 2017. This is not an attractive matchup even for a gutter palate like mine.
Arizona State at Stanford                       4:00 pm                       Pac-12N
How does Stanford keep roping me in with one single player to watch year after year while putting together an offensive system that is dependent on making everybody fall asleep? Bryce Love should go off against ASU and Kalen Ballage should continue to do absolutely nothing against Stanford so pretty much expect both of these teams to look exactly how they have looked for the past four weeks. Stanford will win in a rout, 27-16.
Eastern Michigan at Kentucky              4:00 pm                         SECN
Kentucky lost to an inferior opponent last week so we’ll see how they bounce back against a relatively tough Eastern Michigan team
Iowa at Michigan State                           4:00 pm                           FOX
Iowa missed a huge opportunity last week at home against Penn State so they might be in a bad mental space against Sparty. That’s Michigan State’s best bet because they look just as bad in 2017 as they did in 2016.
Texas State at Wyoming                         4:00 pm                          Stadium
The Josh Allen “I’m not actually good enough to play in the NFL” tour continues with a visit from Scott Bakula and the Armadillos.
UConn at SMU                                         4:00 pm                           ESPNews
UConn football is consistent with two things: being bad and having good defensive backs. That’s all I can think of for a recommendation here. Courtland Sutton could have a tough week but SMU should win. UConn is legit one of the worst teams in the country right now.
Miami, OH at (22) Notre Dame                5:00 pm                            NBCSN
I’m sure there’s a way to look this up quickly but I’m not gonna be the one to do it - how many times has a team played Miami (OH) and Miami (FL) in the same season? Notre Dame is doing it this year. I hope they lose both but last year’s bad luck doesn’t seem to have carried over to this year.
Akron at Bowling Green                         6:00 pm                             ESPN3
Technically speaking this is a football game so enjoy it you fucking weirdos who watch bullshit MACtion.
(24) Mississippi State at (13) Auburn    6:00 pm                             ESPN
I still think of Malzahn as the better schemer between these two but I’m not 100% about that anymore. I think Auburn will probably roll the Bulldogs here.
Air Force at New Mexico                        7:00 pm                             CBSSN
I’m low key enjoying Air Force football this year. This is the kind of trash game that typifies my ideal of Degenerate Football.
Ball State at Western Michigan             7:00 pm                              ESPN3
How does the MAC manage to infect such a huge percentage of the TV schedule every week?
Charlotte at FIU                                       7:00 pm                      beIN SPORTS
For all of the great things he did for The U and UNC’s programs, Butch Davis isn’t really a quick turnaround guy. FIU is starting from the very bottom of the stack in Florida but I’m sure if he gets 4 years there, Davis will have them turned into an offbrand monster. Kind of like what UCF and USF have going right now.
Coastal Carolina at ULM                        7:00 pm                                ESPN3
Yeesh. Gotta respect this game for finding a place to hide. Nobody is going to watch this.
Marshall at Cincinnati                            7:00 pm                                ESPN3
Another kind of awful matchup that’s nicely scheduled for minimum exposure.
Memphis at UCF                                     7:00 pm                                ESPN2
Without looking I would have sworn both of these teams were just barely inside the top 25 but now I am looking and neither one of them is there. Weird. This is a pretty great AAA matchup if you’re into that sort of thing. If you are not into that sort of thing you should be because this is the most interesting conference in the sport. Not the best, mind you, just the most entertaining.
Middle Tennessee at Florida Atlantic  7:00 pm                              Stadium
It seems well nigh impossible to me that Lane Kiffin goes unscathed in the current pay to play scandal even if the investigation never jumps from basketball to football.
North Texas at Southern Miss              7:00 pm                            CUSA.TV
How did so many bad games get scheduled for prime time on Saturday this week? You won’t have to do a lot of channel hopping.
South Alabama at Louisiana Tech         7:00 pm                             ESPN3
This is one of the better games on the schedule at this time and USA has actually sucked badly so far this year.
Troy at (25) LSU                                       7:00 pm                             ESPNU
Maybe Derrius Guice will do something to make this interesting but I wouldn’t count on it.
(11) Ohio State at Rutgers                     7:30 pm                               BTN
If Ohio State really tries for 80 this is worth watching but otherwise it’s just more detritus.
South Carolina at Texas A&M                7:30 pm                            SECN
aTm has two potential first round talents in Christian Kirk (fading) and Trayveon Williams (only a sophomore) and a head coach who built his rep in the first place as a great offensive mind. Sakerlina has a supposed defensive wizard at head coach and a bunch of early round talent all over the roster. When you say it like that this seems like a fun game but nope. I’ve got no interest in it.
  (2) Clemson at (12) Virginia Tech          8:00 pm                             ABC
Now this looks like a real deal great game to me. Both teams have freshman QBs and I think VPISU’s Josh Jackson is actually the better of the two but he can be that and it still might not matter in this particular game. This is not an easy win for Clemson and should actually be a better game than Clemson’s last “big test.” The Hokies are much better on defense than Louisville and they might be able to get off a few deep burns on Clemson’s secondary.
(15) Oklahoma State at Texas Tech       8:00 pm                             FOX
If Clemson makes me a liar and just stomps over Virginia Tech then you can check in here for what is sure to be a 79-63 kind of a game with over 1,000 yards of combined passing.
(6) Washington at Oregon State            8:00 pm                         Pac-12N
Every week I get to Oregon State against whoever and just laugh to myself that this fucking guy left the head coaching job at Wisconsin to become the guy at Oregon State and every single week they look worse than they did the previous week. UDub should have this one sealed up before the start of the second quarter.
University of Mississippi, Oxford at (1) Alabama    9:00 pm          ESPN
On the one hand Shea Patterson is extremely talented and 27 points is a huge line for a conference game. On the other hand Mississippi got worn the fuck out by the Antifa Bears who don’t even have a real roster put together yet and Alabama could sleep walk to a 30 point lead here. It’s just a matter of how much Alabama wants to stomp them out. All of that recent history of upsets and close games is history, this is not going to be close.
Nevada at Fresno State                          10:00 pm                         ATTSNRM
Fuck yes, this is West Coast trash and I love it. Neither of these teams is particularly good (I mean like any good at all) so this might not be watchable but I sometimes get into this sort of thing.
California at Oregon                                10:30 pm                              FS1
It’s not time for either of them to have a national following yet but I like where both of these programs are headed. Cal having a decent defense overnight seems like a road map to an exploitable market inefficiency in college football.
Colorado at UCLA                                     10:30 pm                        ESPN2
Seeing them side by side like this makes me realize that Colorado already exploited that inefficiency that the Antifas are moving towards and started from even farther back in the pack. I just thought of this comp for Josh Rosen and now I’m buying into it: Russell Wilson. He’s obviously much taller than Wilson but the pluses and minuses to their games overlap a lot. Rosen won’t have a 5th year in a new uniform to broaden the scope of his game so he’s probably looking at one year or more as a redshirt in the NFL to put things together but I think I’m onto something here.
NIU at (19) San Diego State                     10:30 pm                        CBSSN
I ran out of space and felt like I already had enough running backs on the RTARLsman list but Rashaad Penny is definitely still one of my guys. I’ll check in on this one if I can but it should be a pretty big win for SDSU. That came out weird, I love terrible late night blowouts but I don’t want to misrepresent what it is I actually want from this game.
San Jose State at UNLV                            10:30 pm                         ESPNU
I kind of wish it hadn’t occurred to me how odd it is for UNLV to be named Rebels because that’s all I think about for them now. This game is a pretty strong contender for worst teams to play each other in 2017, if you’re wondering about that side of things.
Colorado State at Hawaii                          11:59 pm        MWN/Spectrum PPV
This is a beautiful terrible game. I want so badly to watch but it could really lead to a divorce. I’m sure this holds true in some form for almost everybody reading this. If anybody reads this part. Mountain West Network can’t have a subscriber base larger than like 100,000 households can it?

Storm Watch Continues Along Southeastern US Coast
As of 1500 UTC, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) was reporting that a hurricane warning has been extended northeastward along the North Carolina coast. The storm was located 90 miles east-northeast of Daytona, Florida, and 205 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina. A Category2 storm, Dorian is packing sustained winds of 105 MPH.
The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES®) activation status is at Level 3 (stand-by mode) in the West Central Florida Section, while it’s at Level 2 (partial activation) but expected to move to Level 1 (activated) in the Northern Florida Section, as Hurricane Dorian continues to move north-northwest at 9 MPH, parallel to the northeastern Florida coast
The Florida ARES Net is operating on 3.950 MHz (or 7.242 MHz, if propagation is poor) from 0700 through 1900 ET and not overnight, until asked to stand down by the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC). An ARES Emergency Net is being conducted on the statewide SARnet system.
The three ARRL Florida Sections were scheduled to hold a conference call at noon to assess the current situation and to coordinate support for any remaining operations.
At 1500 UTC, the National Hurricane Center reported:
“Dorian is moving toward the north-northwest near 9 mph (15 km/h) and this motion is expected to continue today. A turn toward the north is expected tonight, followed by a turn toward the northeast on Thursday. On this track, the core of Hurricane Dorian will move parallel to the Florida east coast and the Georgia coast through tonight. The center of Dorian is forecast to move near or over the coast of South Carolina and North Carolina Thursday through Friday.
“Maximum sustained winds are near 105 MPH (165 km/h) with higher gusts. A slow weakening is expected during the next few days. However, Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during this time.
“Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km). NOAA buoy 41008, located off the Georgia coast, recently reported sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h) and a wind gust of 47 mph (76 km/h).”
In Georgia, an ARES Emergency Net is active on 3.975 MHz, as the Georgia coast remains under a tropical storm warning and a storm surge warning.
“We have a variety of coastal, hospital, EOC stations and other stations on frequency together with Georgia’s Emergency Management Agency (GEMA),” Georgia Assistant Section Manager Jim Altman, W4UCK, told ARRL. “The ARES Mutual Assistance Teams stand ready. We will remain in operation at least during the daylight hours and at night as needed for the duration of the storm.”
ARES operators have been deployed to two Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) sites. GEMA will listen for assistance calls on HF, but the primary method will be to submit an ICS 231 form via Winlink. GEMA will monitor 3.975, 5.335, 7.287, and 3.583 MHz (MT-63 1K), as well as D-Star, and the *Georgia* EchoLink conference node 4544.
Coastal counties in Georgia are under evacuation orders, and highways have been reconfigured for one-way traffic to move inland away from the coast.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
In South Carolina, ARES was standing by and assessing the needs of its coastal counties, as of Tuesday. South Carolina Section Emergency Coordinator Billy Irwin, K9OH, said the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) radio room has been operating 24/7. “We have been having regular conference calls with our leadership and ensuring they have the latest information possible,” Irwin said. South Carolina ARES would potentially scale back statewide operations, excluding operators at SCEMD and those directly assisting the coastal counties later today. “Everyone is reminded that this is a fluid situation and these decisions are subject to change without notice,” he added.
In North Carolina, emergency managers are anticipating the worst effects of the storm on Thursday and Friday. Evacuation routes have been established, and 390 North Carolina National Guard soldiers have been activated and are standing by to respond, along with 56 high-water vehicles and 19 aircraft. The storm’s heaviest impact is expected to be east of Interstate Route 95, with rain and storm surge the primary threats. Medical and general sheltering operations are under way and there are accommodations for pets.

Chesca’s Current Status
This weekend was amazing and gave me so much happiness, something I feel like I haven’t been in a long time. You know that the rest of this post is gonna explain why lol
So earlier last week I heard that a friend was selling tickets to the Alex Aiono and William Singe concert that I had been eyeing since like I think December or January, whenever they had released their tour dates. I was debating about it but by the time I decided tickets sold out already. So when I heard about my friend selling her ticket, the whole week I thought about it. I told her I’d tell her by Friday night. The week goes by and I was still debating, I was pretty broke and i knew if I went I would spend a lot of money on like getting there and back, and then food, and subway. What actually made me decide was that after class friday Nat Jose and I went for coffee with our old Don and I mentioned I was debating in going to toronto for this concert and Nat was like, “yo, lets go, i need a getaway and celebrate finishing design.” Plus Nellie was throwing a late bday party for Paul Saturday but I knew that Lisa would be there and that Thavi could potentially be there too. I honestly just didn’t want another repeat of gfx. I wouldn’t have been comfortable and I didn’t want that to translate on a celebration. Plus thinking about being in the same room as those two made me really anxious. I mean I know I didn’t do anything wrong but its the bad vibes and negativity I know those two people have for me that would make me uncomfortable. I mean if you had a choice I think you would choose a weekend in toronto by yourself, going on a few dates and going to see one of you favourite Youtube singers live, over a few hours of not knowing how to act around two people who use to be the closest people in your life who have now come to hate you for who know what reasons?
So yea after a night of drinking and dancing at Phil’s with Nat, Jon, and Jose, which by the way was super fun because of the drunken talks and the company. Nat and I ventured off to Toronto Saturday morning. We went and got Pho in Chinatown, and then went to Eaton’s to shop and pick up some stuff. We ate there and didn’t go to Celene and Abby’s place till around 6pm. Funny story about where we ate for dinner. We went to the like cafeteria type place. I went to the coffee and pastry section since I was still full from Pho. I got an iced latte with a cheesecake. While I was in line, there was a hella rude customer who was on his phone telling the guy behind the counter (who was pretty cute btw) that he wanted more syrup on his waffle. He was also waiting for his drink and when the girl called it out he didn’t think it was his, when it clearly was. When he had left the cute guy behind the counter and another co-worker who I realized were filipino started talking about how rude he was. I listened and laughed cuz I know their struggles too and when the guy gave me my drink i smiled and said Salamat, and he was thrown off by it and he smiled back and I went on my merry way.
Conversation with Nat was pretty good, we go pretty deep into my stuff, just with dating again and how I had been feeling the past few weeks. After that we went back and I redid my make up and taxied to the venue. I thought I was gonna be late but the show didn’t start till 8pm, line just started to move at 7pm. We get into the venue and its just standing so no seats. Its pretty packed and it was cold in there. I was supposed to meet up with my friend Jezeth but she was in the middle and I couldn’t find her so I just chilled where I was. When alex came out I had an amazing view of him, like most of the people there were girls who were with their girl friends or girls with their boyfriends, plus most of the people were asian so they were all shorter then me all I had to do was tippy toe a bit and I could see alex so well! The girls I ended up standing with and eventually befriending were super fun! They were drinking too so their vibes were legit and we danced and fangirled the whole time together!
So let me talk about Alex, this man, omg he was so much cuter in person, his smile 10x warmer and his voice.... like fuck me, lol Like I thought that it wouldn’t sound as good as his videos but honestly he sounded exactly the same, even better live actually. I could listen to this man sing and play guitar for hours! I totally jus vibed out during his set, really took in the moment and just enjoyed being in the same space as him. *sigh* his gf is so lucky! lol
So after Alex it was obviously William and I only knew him from the songs he and Alex collabed together on. I honestly was not prepared, like this man, was sooooo good live, like his falsetto is on point, his covers were amazing! I love his style, his r&b swag and even his original songs... man. He got me feeling feels too. A little bit into his set my phone died and I actually am so glad it did. I really jus experienced the night and really enjoyed myself without worrying about getting things on camera. I just lived in the moment. I was just so happy and loving life. Alex ended up coming back later on and they sang the songs they did together and I almost died, like I felt like I went to heaven lol
After the concert, which ended around 10:30pm I decided to walk back, well partially. I had to find a place that was open where I could charge my phone. So I went the Tims on College and Yonge. Stayed there for a bit and then took the street car to Abby’s place. Decided to get BK cuz i was hungry and then waited for Nat to come back since she went to go and hangout with Jack while I was at the concert. When she got back we talked a bit before we went to bed. I let her sleep on the bed and I took the ground, which wasn’t bad actually.
So we wake up and we originally planned on having brunch with Jack and Bri but Jack was too sick and Bri’s schedule was too busy so we went for lunch with Celene, her man, and Abby. The place we went to was near Koreatown and we ate at this cute restaurant that had the best eggs benedict I’ve every had in my life. I go mine with baby spinach and the home fries was covered in this sauce and like i died! The conversation was good too and it was nice hanging out with friends. It was such a beautiful day too! Like the nicest day of the year so far I think. I mean I didn’t wear a coat and walked around the whole day. after lunch nat and i walked around koreatown, got my favourite fish dessert and just chilled. She had a carpool a 5pm since she was having dinner with her roomies so she went back first. I actually had a date for that afternoon but he cancelled saying he had worked out too hard in the morning and pretty much felt sick. I wasn’t too bummed about it since I still got to hangout with my friends and eat good food. We’ve been having good conversations on facebook and he seemed sad we couldn’t hangout, but its okay things happen for a reason.
When nat left I went for a bbt date with this guy I had been talking too for a week now. He was Korean and was actually pretty nice and sweet. Like physically he was okay but conversation was nice and he spoke english pretty well despite only living in Korea until like 4 months ago. He was super sweet and even walked me to my subway. it was cute date, i’d talk to him again lol
I was supposed to meet up with other friends for dinner but they cancelled last minute because something came up. Another guy I’ve been talking to for a week asked if I was free to grab dinner since he wanted to see me while I was still in town. I said yes of course, and we ended up getting dim sum in Chinatown and it was honestly sooooo good! This guy is filipino and he’s one of the ones I enjoy talking to via text all week so i was excited to meet him. He was actually so much better looking in person and his voice, sounds so nice. Like its deep and he has a filipino accent which I didn’t think i’d like but I totally did. Our conversation was so good and i just felt comfortable with him. after dim sum he offered to subway with me all the way to yonge and sheppard. thats like 30 mins on the subway. My carpool was at 10:30 so we went to the meet up spot and the carpool cancels last minute! At first I was annoyed and furious cuz now I’m stuck here till tmrw morning. But what happened after made up for it.
We subway back to Abby’s place and then we decided that we wanted to walk around for a bit. guys, we ended up walking 3 km together. We went down beverley st. all the way to queen st. down john st., past front st. and all he way down to the harbourfront. We sat by the water for 30 mins, just talking about life, relationships, school, etc. The spontaneous nature of the whole night was something I honestly have never done before. Probably one of the best first dates I’ve had. we ended up walking up spadina from the rogers centre and made a full circle back to Abby’s place. We walked for 3 hrs almost. When we said our goodbyes he hugged me so tight and I was gonna kiss him on the cheek but i ended up giving him a peck on the lips, and then he hugged me again and then this time he kissed me and then just walked away all shy like. It was so cute and like the best way to end my night.
I went to sleep around 2am I think. Woke up at noon, and went and got starbucks with celene and her man. Then took a go train to bramalea and then a bus to kitchener go, then the 8 bus to asian grocery, then walked to campus and made it for the 5pm meeting. We then set up at 6pm for our event, and then EOT was at 7PM-10PM.
So that was my weekend getaway with myself. Honestly I’m so happy I decided to go away, even though now i’m hella broke, it was so worth it. I mean like I finally know what I want to do and what I’m gonna tell my parents my plan is. This weekend gave me motivation to get my shit together and just go after what I want to do and what I want to pursue. I swear I’m meant to live in Toronto and based of the events of this weekend I feel like in my gut its where I’m supposed to be.
I plan on going back in 2 weeks, after I’ve made some money and you know finished school stuff lol

Annual Research Roundup: Recent Science Supporting Organic Thursday, January 26, 8:30 AM Every year scientists release a wide variety of research that supports the benefits of organic food and farming. However, many of these cutting-edge studies are never communicated with the public because they are published in journals that are expensive to access. This workshop will help bridge the gap between science and the public, by covering research on applied solutions for farmers, the environmental effects of organic systems, and the human health impacts of exposure to pesticides. Dr. Jessica Shade from the Organic Center will give a brief overview of the multitude of studies published in 2016 of interest to the organic community. Brise Tenser will give an update on the Organic Farming Research Foundation studies on research needs in organic systems and public funding of organic projects. Dr. Asa Bradman from the Center for Environmental Research and Children’s Health (CERCH) will highlight their recent publications on developmental impacts of prenatal exposure to pesticides.
Presenters: Dr. Jessica Shade, The Organic Center Brise Tenser, OFRF Dr. Asa Bradman, UC Berkeley
Organic Control of Citrus Greening Friday, January 27, 1:30 PM The purpose of this workshop is to educate citrus growers about organically approved methods for preventing citrus greening, including the most recent research findings from 2016. Citrus greening disease, or Huanglongbing (HLB), threatens the citrus industry on a massive scale. The highly destructive disease can spread quickly and cannot be cured once a tree is infected. Several researchers have recently started to investigate organically compliant methods such as thermal control, resistant rootstocks, organic-compliant antimicrobials and insecticides, and beneficial insects. This workshop will showcase the results from these recent studies, helping protect California farmers from the threat of HLB spread. Ben McLean of Uncle Matt’s Organic will summarize research conducted in Florida on potential organic control of HLB, and Jeff Steen of Ecosa Properties and the California Citrus Research Board will give an update on the HLB situation in California and the need for research targeting organic prevention of HLB here.
Presenters: Ben McLean, Uncle Matt’s Organic Jeffrey Steen, Ecosa Properties
Conserving Biodiversity Using Organic Practices Friday, January 27, 3:30 PM Learn about a spectrum of easily adopted, on-farm conservation activities that support biodiversity and benefit farm systems. Farm management choices reflect the context of the land and the farm’s need and capacity, but can be improved by following general practices along a continuum from simple to complex. In this talk, results will be shared from research on 54 organic farms on the Central Coast and in the Midwest. Results demonstrate how farm management and landscape complexity affect the abundance and diversity of pollinators, the natural enemies of pests (including birds), soil fertility, and the ability of soils to store greenhouse gases. We will share planning tools from the Organic Center to prioritize, record, and monitor biodiversity, and optimize the multiple benefits of on-farm conservation.

How the $349 billion PPP relief program for small companies unraveled
This story is offered solely on Company Expert Prime. Join BI Prime and start reading now.
The federal government guaranteed that relief funding for small companies damaged by coronavirus would be up and running on April 3.
Banks threatened to choose out of providing to America’s struggling businesses up until the Treasury resolved essential issues.
A signature provision of the $349 billion help bundle called the Payroll Defense Program was promised as a lifeboat for United States little businesses.
Business owners and creators hurried to use for the financial lifeline through their banks, the federally designated gatekeepers of the loans and grants, just to be met with turmoil.
John Resnick, a business owner, raged on Twitter that two different banks told him they weren’t prepared to process loans.
” Being a #bankofamerica organisation customer is like being one of the bad on the Titanic,” creator Lisa Dye wrote on her own Twitter feed
About 30 million little companies in the United States utilize half the nation’s labor force.
Organisation Expert spoke with professionals and service owners, pored through reports from our newsroom and other media sources, and stayed glued to the grumblings of exasperated business owners across social media to piece together a troubling puzzle: how a much anticipated federal-relief program went to pieces so marvelously in 24 hours, leaving the bedrock of America’s economy without aid or hope simply when both were most required.
The federal government sets a video game strategy for relief
The hope that Washington would swoop in to save small services first flared on March 27, when President Trump signed into law the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin set a huge date on the calendar: Small-business owners would be able to visit their usual banks or fintech platforms to apply for funds on April 3– barely a week after the costs was signed into law.
” We anticipate this will be very, really easy,” he informed Fox Business on March 29.
Agents from nationwide and community banks told Reuters they didn’t desire to take on the legal and financial liability of vetting applications on such a brief timeline since it meant they ‘d bear the impact of any scams.
Revised guidance from the Treasury released late on Tuesday, March 31, more irritated banks and developed an assortment of moving guidelines that added to the confusion of the short timeline.
Big and small banks alike lobbied the Treasury and the SBA to change their terms, according to Bloomberg
For the entire strategy to work, the government had to get the banks to agree to get involved.
All this wrangling worked to the banks’ benefit, sort of.
The controversy over the altering loan terms masked another problem: Most monetary institutions were still rushing to set up innovation systems capable of handling the mass volume of customer applications.
Small-business owners are met with chaos and denial
Brent Underwood, owner of the HK Austin hostel, in Texas, shut down his service for 3 months since of the coronavirus pandemic.
When the application floodgates opened on the early morning of April 3, Underwood was one of thousands of company owners who were fulfilled with a patchwork of irregular bank protocols.
Andy LaPointe, owner of Traverse Bay Farms, in Bellaire, Michigan, required $10,000 to keep his business alive and 5 employees on staff.
When he called the number the bank designated for the loans, he says he was disconnected three times in the two hours he was on hold.
This tracks with reporting from Market Early Morning, which composed that many banks stated they weren’t ready for the high need– which they blamed Mnuchin’s last-minute tweaks on April 2 for the confusion.
It was quick becoming clear that the volume of applications would go beyond the system’s capability. By 9 a.m., the time at which numerous banks open, 700 loans amounting to $2.5 million had already been processed, The New york city Times reported
Many business owners went to their bank’s website to find they were not yet accepting applications. Others were directed to damaged web pages.
Bank of America was the first major bank to open applications about 9 a.m., a representative told Business Insider. screenshots from about noon showed it had enforced new financing limitations, needing that candidates currently have a credit card or previous loans with the bank as of February 15 to be qualified. Consumers with savings and inspecting accounts didn’t fulfill this bar and were obstructed from looking for loans.
One disappointed Twitter user posted that she couldn’t get a PPP loan regardless of the years she’s utilized Bank of America.
— Lisa Dye (@lisamdye) April 3, 2020
JPMorgan Chase started providing at midday. Wells Fargo and Citibank weren’t accepting applications, stating they were holding out until getting more explanations from the Treasury, according to Reuters
Virginia Democratic congressman Don Beyer posted images of damaged web pages and delay notices from Chase, Capital One, and Citibank. “Here’s what small company owners are looking at today when they try to get PPP loans from banks,” he composed.
— Rep. Don Beyer (@RepDonBeyer) April 3, 2020
According to Beyer’s images, Chase’s website showed a mistake message. Capital One told website visitors that it was still waiting for info from the SBA and Treasury. Citibank’s website displayed a message stating the SBA was “currently developing regulations and guidelines” and that when gotten, the bank would start lending.
Business owners raved on social networks, specifically over Bank of America’s surprise requirements. By early afternoon, the hashtags #PPPloans and #bankofamerica were trending on Twitter.
LaPointe, the Michigan entrepreneur, told Organisation Insider that he was lastly able to reach a branch supervisor who took his application over the phone. She informed him their system was overloaded with callers and she had another consumer waiting on the line to use.
” As a small business owner, you need to be client and relentless,” he stated.
At the end of the day, SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza announced on Twitter that the Paycheck Defense Program had actually processed more than 17,000 loans valued at more than $5.4 billion in its first day, more than doubling the firm’s $2.2 billion disaster lending total for the year before.
However smaller sized banks said they experienced downturns in the SBA system throughout the day on Friday, and had problem reaching federal agencies for assistance, according to The New York Times and American Banker
” The expectation that this $2 trillion bundle would go through Congress which the cash would be streaming three days later on, that was never ever a practical expectation,” Patrick Ryan, the chief executive of New Jersey lending institution First Bank, told The New York Times
The headaches become a days-long affair
The turmoil spilled into the weekend. On Saturday, April 4, Jim Axelrod reported on CBS This Morning that the SBA loan application page ended up to have a troubling glitch that showed small company owners’ individual details– including names, dates of birth, social security numbers and other contact info– to others requesting the exact same loan.
In a Twitter thread on Saturday, Florida Senator Marco Rubio acknowledged the problems with Friday’s launch, consisting of site problems, opposing and insufficient assistance, and the requirement for more cash. He stated the “problems” were to be expected from a $349 billion strategy that had actually just been passed a week before.
Brad Bolton, the CEO of Community Spirit Bank in Mississippi, said on an April 7 teleconference with President Trump (which Service Expert reporters went to) that his organization had been “locked out” of the SBA system till Sunday.
” We worked through the weekend preparing applications,” Bolton stated. “As a matter of reality, I was up three nights until 2 am sending loans to get the cash streaming.”
While Trump congratulated Bank of America, the United States Treasury, the SBA, and local banks on Twitter, entrepreneur invested the weekend anxiously awaiting approval– sometimes after using to several banks.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 4, 2020
” I will immediately ask Congress for more cash to support small businesses under the #PPPloan if the assigned money runs out. Up until now, way ahead of schedule,” he composed.
But loans approved are not necessarily loans disbursed, and America’s harried company owner entered another week still in immediate need of working capital.
1 in 4 companies are on the verge of long-term failure
Monday, April 6– the second day of lending– was pestered with a continued rash of SBA system failures
Wells Fargo started providing on Monday, but announced its involvement would be capped at $10 billion, mainly focused on smaller sized borrowers. Regulators had set up the loaning cap after the bank was condemned of fraudulently opening millions of accounts over a number of years. When the nation’s largest small company lending institution, the San Francisco giant’s capability to assist even its own consumers is now severely limited. On Wednesday, April 8, the Federal Reserve announced that it would “directly customize” the constraints on the bank’s participation in the relief program.
Wells Fargo decreased an interview for this story and rather directed us to its PPP site, which mentions the bank’s focus on nonprofits and companies with less than 50 staff members.
When requested an interview, Bank of America emailed Service Insider that as of 9 am on April 6, it had actually gotten about 178,000 applications seeking about $33 billion in loans.
A senior administration official at the United States Treasury sent Service Expert a statement stating the “extraordinary $350 billion Main Street help program” had actually approved $35 billion in dispensations to more than 100,000 small companies. It included that it would set up a hotline beginning April 6 to respond to concerns from banks.
A spokesperson from JP Morgan Chase said via e-mail that the bank was “positive that the procedure for inputting the applications into the SBA system will get simpler and faster this week so that we can work actually rapidly to get our clients the assistance they require.”
The SBA did not return an ask for comment since press time.
Discontent continued to bubble as the days passed.
In a webinar video gotten by the Washington Post, SBA Nevada district director Joseph Amato flayed big banks for hold-ups and resistance to federal regulations. “A few of the huge banks … and this is simply editorial … that had no problem taking billions of dollars of complimentary cash as bailout in 2008 are now the most significant banks that are resistant to helping small companies,” Amato said in the video.
On Tuesday, April 7, as stress between public authorities and private institutions simmered, Mnuchin revealed that he had actually asked for an extra $250 billion for bank loan from Congress. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell released a statement stating he expects to call a vote as quickly as Thursday.
America’s businesses can’t wait much longer.
A report from MetLife and the US Chamber of Commerce keeps in mind that a person in four small or midsize businesses are less than 2 months away from shutting down for great.
In hindsight, April 3 appears like the start of what will be a long procedure of trial and error. Those who weren’t able to use on Friday persist in their efforts this week.
Joe Shamie had been awaiting nearly a month to obtain the $2.5 million loan he requires to keep payroll for his 300 workers at furniture-maker Delta Children He said his lender at Wells Fargo told him his business would be among the very first in line to receive emergency funding.
” We were ravaged,” Shamie said.
He has currently called his accountant, lawyer, friends, and several other banks to tire all his choices.
” If I gave up on the loan, there would be a lot of people out of work,” he stated.
