The Ring Road Food Marketplace

One cool spring afternoon, Nic and I had just gotten out of vibrations, our stomachs growling from hunger. We decided against going to Brandywine as we felt we didn’t have enough time to sit down and get our money’s worth using up a meal swipe. So, we continued walking around Ring Road until we began seeing sign after sign of on campus clubs selling all different kinds of food.

“Spamasubi $2! Boba $2! Korean BBQ 5$!”, we heard coming from all directions as we walked between tents. Although most clubs sold different products, we noticed the ones that sold similar foods tended to be the exact same price. We soon recognized that we had walked into a competitive market where everyone who sold the same goods priced them at the socially optimal price. For spamasubi it was $2, for boba tea it was also $2, and for Korean BBQ it was $5. We didn’t mind the competition between these clubs as it created a product-variety externality in this market which in turn caused the prices to be low and the consumer surplus to be high. Some of the stands selling the Korean BBQ had other options included in the $5 price such as corn, rice, kimchi, etc. and these comparative advantages are provided by the sellers with the intent to increase both their quantity sold and total revenue. After we had made it through all of the tents, we reviewed which of these substitutes would be the most delicious and the biggest bang for our buck. We landed on buying Korean BBQ and boba tea as our meal which cost us a total of $7 each. We knew that we maximized our food per dollar value with the Korean BBQ stand we chose because the extra sides included in the $5 cost increased the value to us for food from that stand compared to food from the stand that offered no sides. Moreover, if we had gone to Brandywine instead of Ring Road, the cost would have been equivalent to $13.50 for each of our swipes. The opportunity cost of buying food on Ring Road was that we weren't able to eat as much food as we wanted, however, if we had gone to Brandywine the opportunity cost would have been $6.50. Going to Brandywine would have cost almost double what we paid at Ring Road and, based off our time restriction between classes, the extra amount of food we could have gotten at Brandywine would not have been worth the extra $6.50. So, in conclusion the opportunity cost of buying food on Ring Road was less than the opportunity cost of going to Brandywine between classes and therefore we made the right choice.

Almost every day of the week, UCI’s Ring Road is bustling with activity, provided the students aren’t scared off by the rain or COVID-19. They are running to class, meeting friends, and are frequently, buying and selling food. Many clubs and student organizations sell food on Ring Road to raise money, and in doing so, have created a vibrant marketplace. As a member of the UCI archery team, and a person who greatly enjoys food, I regularly both buy and sell food on Ring Road, and as such, the economics of this marketplace very frequently have an impact on my day. From my recent studies of economics, I’ve become aware of various specific economic factors and principles I deal with everyday either walking through our selling food on Ring Road.

There are several products that are almost ubiquitously sold on Ring Road every day, with a possibility of many vendors of each one, namely banh mi, boba tea, and spam musubi. These products are sold so regularly and by so many groups that they can be approximated as perfectly competitive markets. To be considered a perfectly competitive market, there are a number of important factors that need to be met. Firstly, there should be so many buyers and sellers in the market that no individual can have an impact on prices, and while that isn’t technically true in terms of sellers, there are enough sellers of these products that it can be assumed true. Secondly, goods and services offered should be exactly the same, which in my experience is generally true for these specific products as the sizes and quality are consistent between them. Thirdly, there should be no barrier to enter the markets. Again, while there are some costs to be considered, such as acquiring a pop up tent and signs, most of the organizations are large enough that these materials are already owned by at least one member. The groups also must be registered campus organizations, but there are no actual inherent costs in this, merely the limited time required for paperwork. Lastly, there are assumed to be no externalities or government regulation, which is also generally true of these stands, other than regulation on how long they can be out there. One way that the sellers of these products clearly show a competitive market is the existence of established market prices which never vary. In the six months that I have been at this school, I have never once seen banh mi sold at any price over or under 4$, boba sold at a price other than 2$, or spam musubi for more than 2$ (other than for sales if you buy more than one).

These prices, by virtue of being created in a competitive market, are the Socially Optimum Prices, or the price at which total surplus is maximized. Total surplus is the sum of Producer Surplus, or the price the producer would be willing to sell a product for minus the price they do sell the product for, and Consumer Surplus, or the amount the consumer is willing to pay for a product minus what he actually pays for it. All the firms in the market know that if they attempt to sell for a price higher than this market price, they will make few or no sales, as there is a booth twenty feet away selling at the market price. They also never sell below these market prices, other than at the end of the day, as their profit margins are limited and any attempt to undercut these prices will result in a loss of profit.

Even those products that aren’t sold by enough people to be considered a perfectly competitive market are still sold at generally reasonable prices. This is because while there might not be anyone else selling that particular product, there are enough people selling substitutes for it that they would lose business if they raised prices. Substitutes are products whose demand rises if the price of the other product rises. If one booth is charging an unreasonable price for their Korean Barbeque Tacos, then the buyer can instead go purchase the bacon wrapped hotdog from the booth across from it. This means that no group can sell at too high a price and earn much revenue, keeping all food costs on ring road relatively low.

Another factor that comes into play when considering organizations selling food on Ring Road is the idea of opportunity costs. The opportunity cost of something is the total combination of what one must give up to get/do it, meaning the combination of direct monetary costs, as well as the impact of the lost time, transportation expenses, and whatever other inconveniences must effect it. Each of the people working in those booths is volunteering their time, so they have to weigh the costs of the time they are dedicating to it against the benefits they receive from the action. For me, when I volunteer my time to sell churros with the archery team, I dedicate a few hours on a Thursday morning and early afternoon, during which time I would otherwise be either taking a nap, studying and doing homework, or watching TV (or some combination thereof). My cost benefit analysis generally follows this logic. I know myself well enough to know I would unlikely be working very productively on homework during this time, so my value for that activity would be low. I would enjoy either a nap or watching some television during this time a great deal, so my value for those actions would be high. However, by using this time to sell churros, I raise money that goes into lowering the cost of tournaments and maintaining our targets, which has a significant value to me. In addition, while I am selling churros, I’m hanging out with my teammates, who I consider close friends and really enjoy talking too, so this also adds value to me. This means most weeks, I value I gain far more in benefits from this than I lose in opportunity costs. This changes when I have an exam later in the day, when that time spent studying has much more value to me, so on those days I don’t volunteer, but generally speaking, selling food with my team is an efficient use of my time.

One issue that we found while selling was that on several days we ended up purchasing too many churros, and not selling out fast enough. We had to sell our products by 3pm, and we had gotten to 2:30 with a whole box remaining. This is where the economic principles of marginal and average cost come in. When the Archery Team buys churros at Costco to sell on Ring Road, we do so in bulk, buying several boxes. We sell them for $2, or $3 with toppings. The average cost of each churro, or the total cost divided by the number of outputs, is 1$, plus a few cents per churro for the toppings. However, when we get to the end of the day, and we still have a large number of churros left, we stop caring about average cost. At that point, marginal cost and marginal revenue are all that matter. Since we have already purchased all the churros in bulk, the Marginal Cost one churro to us is only the cost of putting whipped cream on it. Therefore, we can afford to sell it at a lower price. If we don’t sell it then, we won’t sell it at all, and therefore we will receive no revenue at all from that churro. However, if we sell it at a discount, while our Marginal Revenue for that additional churro, or the additional revenue made from producing or selling one additional unit, will be lower than our Average Revenue, or the total revenue divided by total number of units, it will still be higher than our marginal cost for it. Therefore, it is still a logical decision to sell the remaining churros with toppings at a reduced price of $1 at that point in the day.

One idea that influences the sales of boba tea in the competitive market of Ring Road is the idea of arbitrage. Arbitrage is the process of buying a good in one market at a lower price, and selling it in another market where the price is higher. Most of the products sold on Ring Road, other than those made by the clubs selling them, are bought and sold using this process. Generally speaking, most of these products are bought in bulk from other stores, so the price is lower, and as such the average person can’t necessarily get it at that price, unless buying with a large group of friends. When boba is sold on Ring Road the most common price is $2 for a what is normally considered at restaurants as a small. The price for a small boba tea at places such as Cha for Tea in UTC tend to be around $4 including boba. The $2 price point attracts us, as broke college students, to buy that product rather than going elsewhere where it would be more expensive despite there being options on flavors. If the pricepoint for boba on ring road were $3 or even $4, the likeliness that we would go elsewhere, such as Cha for Tea across the street at UTC, goes up proportionally to the increase of price from $2. So, a $3 pricepoint would drive more people to go elsewhere due to the added value of additional choices. A $4 one would cause even more people to go elsewhere, as that price now reaches the market price of the surrounding area, not just the market price of ring road. However, not everyone would go elsewhere, due to the additional cost of time and transportation to travel to a boba shop at another location.

The Ring Road food marketplace has become a regular staple of my day, and it’s economics have a serious impact on me. As a broke college student, money is a serious concern, but the competition on ring road always helps to make things a little easier. And with my newfound understanding of its basic economics, I can navigate this marketplace better than I have before.

Ok the situation is as follows: I am selling my car for a new one. I have asked my current insurer to transfer my policy to the new car which is fine. However I then questioned about temporarily insuring my old car under the policy and they wanted a ridiculous amount of money for a week - I also do not know how long it will take to sell the car. My fiance owns an old home in northern Ohio and was paying over $1,300 a year for homeowner's insurance until last year. She can't afford over $100 a month in premiums so I looked into trying to get a lower rate. All three agents that I contacted about the matter assumed a replacement cost for her house of around $157,000 which resulted in premiums of exactly what she had last year. The very idea of insuring her house for $157,000 is absurd for two reasons. The first is that I personally built a house in an upscale neighborhood which was almost three times as large and also had an attached garage. I sold that home for around $150,000 and made about $40,000 profit. The second reason that $157,000 is absurd is that any day of the week you can buy a much better house in the neighborhood for less than $60,000. I was able to find a lower rate of around $600 a year through the Ohio Fair Plan website by assuming a realistic replacement cost of $60,000 and not including such things as jewelry coverage (she has no valuable jewelry), and other coverages that don't make sense. Unfortunately, and after contacting several insurance agencies, not a one will write the coverage as specified. The gave me the flimsiest of excuses. It appears to me as if all the insurance companies doing business in our area may have colluded to lock in homeowner insurance rates far higher than is justified. To keep things simple I am calling the current car I have Car A and the new car as Car B. The details of repairs in the middle car ( that i hit on a very low speed) shows that damage at the rear of the car cost only 427 AUD and i offered them to pay it ..
