Sopron, Hungary 📸❤️
When the area that is today Western Hungary was a province of the Roman Empire, a city called Scarbantia stood here. Its forum was located where the main square of Sopron can be found today.
During the Migration Period, Scarbantia was believed to be deserted. By the time Hungarians arrived in the area, it was in ruins. In the 9th–11th centuries, Hungarians strengthened the old Roman city walls and built a castle. The town was named in Hungarian after a castle steward named Suprun. In 1153, it was mentioned as an important town.
In 1273, King Otakar II of Bohemia occupied the castle. Even though he took the children of Sopron's nobility with him as hostages, the city opened its gates when the armies of King Ladislaus IV of Hungary arrived. The king rewarded Sopron by elevating it to the rank of free royal town.

Sun 07.04.19 - Sopron
So Thursday we left Hévíz and got the coach to Sopron, changing at Zalaegerszeg (that was super fun to attempt pronouncing to the driver). Sopron is a really pretty town near the Austrian border in between a huge forest and Neusiedler See, and used to be a Roman town called Scarbantia.
We had a chilled day on Thursday figuring out our next plans while I made an excellent risotto, then yesterday went for a walk up into the forest. We got to a look out thing that was covered in graffiti so I added our names, then trekked up the hill to another one with an even better view (that scared the shit out of me) called Károly-kilátó. All the trees genuinely looked like a Bob Ross painting, and from the top you could see for miles and miles in every direction; even though it was windy and terrifying I super geeked out when I could see the Alps on the horizon 🙃
We meandered our way back via a burned out hotel and the strangest house in the world - seriously, google Taródi Vár. This guy bought some land in the 50s and spent the next half a century building a realistic-looking fucking medieval castle, and filled it with antiques. It’s full of really odd little passageways to nowhere and a super chubby cat. Obviously I’ve now decided that I totally have to do the same one day too 👍🏼
After that we walked into town to check out the firetower, attempted to photobomb a couple’s wedding photos, and saw some ruins of the old roman town. I also had the tastiest ice cream ever (kinder maxi and double chocolate with hazlenuts and almonds 😋) that I would like to eat again every single day for the rest of my life.
Today we woke up ridiculously early (see pre-dawn pictures of the town from the balcony area of the hotel place) and are now on a train to spend the day in Vienna, where we’re also gonna meet up with Matt’s friend Anita; before getting a late train to a hostel in Bratislava later, because Vienna is apparently insanely expensive to stay in during school holidays 😳 I’ve got no idea what’s worth looking at in Bratislava, but we’ve got three nights and it’s only an hour away from Vienna if we wanna check anything else out, then I think the plan is probably towards Prague afterwards, but we’ll see and I shall post again sooooon :)
