Experimental Scanner Photography

I was experimenting with using a scanner for Stop Motion and then immediately decided to explore the aesthetic with a really fast photoshoot. All photos except the one in the center were taken using a Canon scanner on either a felted doll or my face. The dolls depict the characters Sam Datum and Newton Clementine from Doom x Sugar Cookies.

Each photo has been edited in Affinity Photo and do not represent the original raw photos taken by the scanner.

photon decay 001. (see 002 here). Made by hand with a 20 year old consumer scanner and a plaster skull. From an unpublished 2020 series revisiting scanner glitching with my friendly old clunky flatbed scanner from the NIN With Teeth days.

I’d been thinking about that broken old scanner, and the body of work in general, leading up to 2020's 15th anniversary of With Teeth, whose art the scanner was instrumental to. I ended up continuing on to create a series of imagery that extended the ideas of my With Teeth art, which I’ll start to share soon.

I never released this piece because I wanted to do it as a print, but I was never able to get the print to look right. There are some very delicate balances of tones happening here that seem reliant on an RGB display and frustratingly weren’t translating to print, but maybe it’s time to give it another try.
