Gli anziani rimpiangono i bei tempi andati, rievocandone i piaceri, senz'accorgersi che i tempi non sono sostanzialmente mutati, e i piaceri del mondo sono ancora a disposizione di chi può coglierli, per giovinezza, salute e minor assuefazione dell'animo ad essi. Ai tempi di Leopardi ci si lamentava, come ora, dei cambiamenti climatici, ma la sensazione prevalente era che fossero rivolti al freddo, anziché al caldo. L'espressione più usata era, proprio come ora: "Non c'è più la mezza stagione"; una fonte la documenta anche nel 1683; i suoi genitori dicevano che ai loro tempi, quando erano giovani, ci si poteva vestire d'estate a Pasqua, invece nei tempi correnti lo si poteva fare solo a maggio o giugno.

Anche ai tempi di Leopardi s'indagavano le cause del cambiamento climatico, trovandole nel disboscamento, nell'antropizzazione, nelle attività umane; però Leopardi dice che questo cambiamento, effettivamente, non c'è. Egli attribuisce la sensazione di freddo crescente a cause psicologiche. Questo lo rende un negazionista climatico della prima ora.

Una civiltà saggia e in armonia con la natura, come quella dei nativi americani, probabilmente gli sarebbe apparsa più desiderabile e felice della cosiddetta "civiltà matura" che ne stava prendendo il posto.
