A Step By Step Guide For WWII Model Plane Building
Building model planes is a fascinating hobby, especially when it involves recreating historical aircraft from World War II. In this blog post, I'll guide you through the process of WWII model plane building, from choosing the right kit to adding realistic details.
1. Choosing the Model Kit:
Start by selecting a model kit that suits your skill level and interests. Popular WWII aircraft include the Spitfire, Mustang, Zero, and Messerschmitt. Check the kit's scale and reviews to ensure it meets your expectations. There are many places you can go to purchase your kit. Many hobby websites like Hobbylinc, Mega Hobby or ebay will have plenty of options for you.
Before you make your purchase, you will want to check out some review websites to make sure you are getting the model and quality you expect.
2. Gathering Materials:
Before you begin your build, you will want to make sure to have the following materials on hand:
Model kit
Hobby knife and cutting mat
Plastic cement or glue
Sandpaper (various grits)
Paints and brushes - some models will come with paint and others will not. Be sure to read the packaging to see if you need to purchase it separately
Decals
Tweezers for handling small parts
Clear sealant (for a glossy finish)
3. Assembly:
The key to assembling a model is patience but some additional steps are laid out below:
Carefully follow the kit instructions, organizing parts before starting.
Use the hobby knife to remove parts from the sprues, and sand edges for a clean fit.
Dry-fit components before applying glue to ensure proper alignment.
Assemble major sections (wings, fuselage) and let them dry completely before moving on.
4. Painting:
Painting your model can be fun and is an important step to make your model more realistic:
Research historically accurate color schemes for your chosen aircraft. - Some models will contain the color codes you need to purchase.
Prime the model with a suitable primer to enhance paint adherence.
Paint small details first, working towards larger areas.
Use masking tape to create clean lines between different paint colors.
Apply decals following kit instructions.
5. Weathering and Detailing:
If you decide that your model needs to be more realistic, try some of the below techniques.
Add realistic wear and tear using weathering techniques (dry brushing, washes, and chipping).
Detail cockpit interiors with tiny instruments, seats, and control panels.
Consider adding aftermarket accessories like photo-etched parts for extra detail.
6. Final Assembly:
Once any extra details have been added, you will want to put together your new model:
Attach remaining components, such as landing gear, propellers, and antennas.
Double-check alignment and make any necessary adjustments.
Seal the model with a clear finish to protect the paint and decals.
7. Display and Photography:
Once your model is complete, you should show off your accomplishment:
Create a display base that complements the aircraft's historical context.
Experiment with lighting for dynamic photos, showcasing your model from different angles.
8. Community Engagement:
Lastly, you should feel free to share your model far and wide! This is an important way to build community.
Share the building experience through a blog post, documenting challenges and successes.
Include photos at various stages of the construction process.
Discuss historical aspects of the chosen aircraft and any interesting anecdotes related to its service.
Connect with fellow modelers on forums or social media platforms.
Share your blog post and seek feedback from the modeling community.
Building a WWII model plane is not just a hobby; it's a journey through history. Enjoy the process, learn from each build, and share your passion with others in the modeling community. Happy modeling!

I cannot believe how fast misinformation spread about ai energy use like I get it you want to have ethical backing for your anti ai argument and discussions of things like “labor laws” and “copyright” are much more complicated than invoking global warming or the human soul but like jesus. It’s becoming very clear to me that most people don’t know how the internet or technology works at all.
#like im starting to think you guys don’t actually care about artists and just want to say shit…#most of the articles I’ve found abt this are either projections for if ai use keeps growing at its current rate (doubtful) or comparing it#to things like a single plane flight#the comparisons are never to smth like bitcoin mining or a city’s electricity or something actually on its scale#or even crediting ai with the increased amount of data centers like we haven’t needed more processing power As Humans with the more complex#shit online and being calculated by scientists rn#and all of this is only to train the model. not even to use it.#and like to be clear. I am an artist who has lost jobs to ai#but it’s here now and we have to think about living with it into the future#warlock wartalks

just found out the upcoming flight simulator has a walkaround mode where you can literally wander around uncanny ai 3d upscaled bing maps earth with zero restrictions. they finally went and put heaven in a video game.
#:)#anyone here remember the incomprehensible garbled nightmare geometry realms that cities were in flight simulator 2020#endless planes of jagged polygons and impossibly scaled geometry. human beings rendered as 6 foot wide 200 foot tall skyscrapers#roads leading into nowhere and themselves. cars melting into the ground etc etc. you get the picture#i used to explore these with autoflight + freecam but now i don't even need to bother with that set up#the planes in microsoft flightsim are a ruse. the real game is about exploring a patchwork badly rendered scale model earth replica#rural china was my favorite place to go because the american map companies had incomplete satellite data there#so what you got was a computer's ephemeral attempts at dreaming up a landscape it could not properly conceive of#they've probably got shit more accurate with map data + ai enhancements in the last few years#but i still really hope for swathes of uncanny procedurally generated earth to explore

On the workbench:
Revell 1/72 SU-25. I'm trying to replicate a Ukrainian camo scheme I found years ago. There's bits of overspay and mistakes to fix, but otherwise, it came out good.
I'm calling this one done. 1/144 Soul Vogue Super Launcher.

The scale of a mesh usually shouldn't affect performance. Most issues are caused usually by textures, high vertice counts, expensive shaders, etc. The scale *can* make existing issues worse tho
A misconfigured script could also be the culprit but I haven't really looked into what the issue was so 🤷♂️
Fun fact: We know the size of the Pokémon world because Scarlet and Violet has framerate issues
#this seems a bit ill-informed#in most computer graphics libraries the scale of models usually dont matter#the magnitude of the number that represents the positions of vertices are always going to be the same size#you allocate the same amount of bytes to a 3d vector point everywhere#so the time it takes to finish rendering 1 model for a frame should overall be the same#however this is not said for the number of vertices#since now you have more triangles lighting etc to compute#textures are also another factor in this#im more lenient to believe that this is caused by an expensive shader being run#or a misplaced script in the ocean that handles the physics and extends it beyond what the character needs#regardless if the ocean isnt in sight it shouldnt be computed#my takeaway is that rendering something large isnt necessarily a culprit#but rather it can be something else which is made worse by the size of a model#you can likely render a 4 vertex plane whose sides are thrice the diameter of the sun and youd be ok.

I really want to buy a WWII era tank or airplane model and paint it in ways that will piss off everybody else painting them. Model makers are always striving to make it as realistic as possible, even down to dirt and grime. But I want to make it pristine, like a hot rod ready for a show. I want to use candy paint and intricate masking to emulate a traditional lowrider paint job. But what I really want to do is use fluorescent colors and make it look like something straight out of Tank Girl's wildest nightmares.
