Trudging out through the snow and wishing it was with xer paws, Fyodor climbs into shotgun. "Good evening." "Heyy." Steinbeck grins at him with sharp teeth, and revs the car. The moon floods in through the windows, bathing both of them in it. Fyodor bites back a relieved sigh as warm air from the AC floods xer senses. "And what meal are we indulging in tonight?"

I don’t know about you all, but I’m struggling to get in the holiday spirit this year. It’s been a rough year for a lot of people, I think. OZARK HOWLER- ARKANSAS

The Ozarks are a range of low mountains found primarily in Northern Arkansas and southern Missouri with portions extending into Oklahoma and Kansas.   Their origins lie in the late Paleozoic when sand, silt, coral, and shells built up as layers of sludge on the bottom of a sea that covered  what would eventually become the American South. Over time these sediments hardened into rock- sand became sandstone, silt became slate, and the shells and coral became limestone- and the movement of tectonic plates pushed them upwards into a low dome-like plateau.  Over the next 485 million years rivers and rain gradually eroded the soft rocks into canyons, cliffs, and caves that have provided habitat for bears, bobcats, otters and other Southern wildlife along with more unusual creatures like blind cave fish, collared lizards and endangered grey bats. And perhaps a cryptid or two.

According to legend, the people of the Ozarks have been haunted for decades by the unearthly screams of a beast dubbed the Black Howler.  Those who have caught a glimpse of the monster describe it as a dark-furred cat nearly the size of a bear. Other reports claim it has glowing red eyes and demonic horns sprouting from its head.

Explanations for the beast range from a normal, though unknown, species of large cat to something more supernatural. A few people have even compared the beast to English and Welsh legends of black dogs, cŵn annwn, hellhounds, and other supernatural beasts that bring misfortune to those who see them.

More skeptical people have speculated that the Howler is simply a misidentified cougar. Though these big cats are believed to be extinct in this region, it’s possible that a small population has survived. Or perhaps a few lone individuals have wandered in from other areas. This theory is bolstered by photos from trail cams showing creatures that strongly resemble these animals, and by similar cases of “phantom big cats” occurring in areas of the US where they are not normally found.

Though some claim that legends of the Howler go back generations, cryptozoologist Loren Coleman has found that the first reports of the beast originated from posts on online forums in the late 1990s. His investigations indicate that the “folklore” about the beast was a deliberate hoax to mock the widespread reports of chupacabras and bigfoots that were becoming increasingly widespread at the time thanks to the advent of the internet. Hoax it may be, but the Howler has since become a popular piece of Ozark folklore and sightings are still regularly reported.

 The Howler is especially significant as one of the first urban legend monsters to be created online, laying the groundwork for later, more famous internet creatures like Slenderman, The Rake, Momo, and Trevor Henderson’s Siren Head.

Sync Pair Retrospective - Sinnoh VA

Fun fact: I stopped doing these because of Renegade Cynthia.  I started to work on it, but had almost nothing interesting to say, so I stopped saying things, and fell off of these retrospectives for months.  But, since she’s rerunning this month, and the VA seems to be rerunning as well from what I understand, it’s as good a time as any to talk about them.

RENEGADE CYNTHIA Renegade Cynthia, one of the coolest costumes the game has produced.  I do feel like they went with the wrong Giratina, sorry I like Origin form better, but this isn't a problem.  Upon arrival, people lost their minds.  This alt came quite some time after SS Cynthia, and people were dying for a legitimately good Cynthia alt, after both Garchomp and Kommo-o fell off.  Can you imagine not getting a Cynthia alt an average of every 6 months?  Simpler times, my friends.

Cynthia came in as the first ever Zone setter, revitalizing the Ghost type.  See, prior to this?  Off-type in Champion Stadium was the norm.  Because field effects are wildly overpowered, and having SS Red/Leon with Sun support means you're probably stronger than most on-type options anyway.  Cynthia was a beacon of hope for every type to come after.  And was considered second fiddle to Lucas, who was right after her.

No really.  People argued, still argue, that Lucas is better.  And I do get where they're coming from but I hate it.  See, Cynthia provides Ghost Zone and some debuffing effects in Sundering and On a Roll 2 for Shadow Ball, which aligns well with the type's needs.  But it's inconsistent and random, so it's not as valued compared to Lucas.  The next month coming into SS Cyrus and P!Marnie means Cynthia was, for a while, considered a fairly poor Zone setter.  She had gauge issues, she wasn't that good at DPS, and she didn't offer the same depth of support that Cyrus and Marnie had.

But oh man that sync nuke.  Cynthia coincided with the advent of Gauntlet, and was the first of many, many Tech pairs that emphasized Zone and an absurd sync nuke.   Cynthia felt particularly effortless, having admittedly far less to do to set up what she needed.  Moreover, I feel like the combination she had with Halloween Caitlin removed all of her concerns.  Caps attack, salvages speed and defenses, and Caitlin allowed for massive shenanigans with a Ghost strike partner that emphasized DPS like Anni Lillie.

If there was anything that held Cynthia back, it's that ghosts broadly kinda sucked before Lillie.  There weren't good ones.  But with the common grid war, I'd argue Ghost is one of the best types out there.   Shauntal and Fantina got absurdly strong grid improvements, Helena was a strong free unit, and even Agatha has some respectable damage output when desired.  Ghost stepped up its game, and Cynthia benefits massively.

The only real competitors she faced were SC Lillie and H!Allister.  In the case of Lillie, Lillie's trainer move could call Ghost Zone...5% of the time.  This wasn't actually a competition unless you're unhinged.  Allister, by comparison, had Rebuff, a new Zone alternative that gave a 30% multiplier for one rebuff stack, or 50% for two.  It was permanent in CS, and was at least a status change for Uxie purposes in Gauntlet.  But.  Gauges continue to haunt Cynthia.  While the combination of Cynthia with Allister sounds divine, they're both so slow and bad on gauge, that getting things to work is a nightmare.  So as a full type, Cynthia helps, but isn't really cranking out some of the best comps in the meta, you know?

Basically, she's in a spot where she's top dog, but only because there's no one else competing with her.  An alternative that packed more consistent support or gauge control would likely put her out of a job.  She's just hanging on the precipice of failure, and it's weird, because she does have some nice use, it’s just too inconsistent and too limited to really shine.  I hate to say it, because people hate hearing it, but Master Fairs really should be getting grid expansions. The older ones need it real bad.

LUCAS Lucas came in with Dragon Zone, and my initial stance on Lucas was "Kinda sucks."  Because most Dragons at the time...didn't need him.  Iris needed debuffs, she worked better with C!Elesa.  Clair needed other effects or she just wasn't getting anything done.  Zinnia needed weather.  Lance needed so much support that it was rough getting him to work at all, despite being one of the best recipients.  SS Cynthia could also work, but pretty much needed SC Jasmine.  His comps were just a rough time.  You pretty much just had Cyrus, whose Dragon damage was improved, but far from like...the best.

Then SS Serena dropped, and that was the end of that.  Lucas/SS Serena is an unchallenged core, barely even needing support thanks to their extremely strong self-setup.  Lucas had the issue of not really offering anything as support, but the tradeoff was having no impact on gauges thanks to Free Moves Next, allowing for potent dual strike cores.  This is where Lucas shined.  This comp.

And then, SS Kris came, and now Clair had access to Rain and Zone, achieving maximum potential.  And then SS Brendan showed up, and suddenly these comps had special defense debuffs.  Later, we'd even get Anni Raihan's grid expansion throwing out Disarm to lower offenses for C!Iris.  And Lance got his grid expansions, and now he's much, much easier to manage.

Over time, the concerns around Lucas' team comps have largely evaporated as dragons received better self setup, and better support options.  Lucas himself has remained kind of the same since forever.  He's a good tech nuker who supports Dragons through the Zone and DPS.  But because he has no other support effects, he can't step outside of that role.  So he's very good, but restrictive.

SYGNA SUIT CYRUS Friends. Let me tell you about one of the best sync pairs to ever do it.  SS Cyrus was insane.  Packing Dark Zone, Cyrus came in with something even better than that: Dark Void.  Turns out, DeNA agrees with me that Dark Void's nerf in Gen 7 was unjustified, and kept it at 80 accuracy.  Now we are in business.  Cyrus had AoE sleep with high accuracy, and was a hard lockdown that debuffed and dealt a bit of damage on every use.  His sync was destructive, and slapped people asleep when used, continuing the lockdown.  Even when focusing on DPS, Dark Pulse has a flinch rate. Cyrus disrupted with the best of them.  Even outside of his Zone, which was a tremendous benefit, this set a standard for supportive effects on field effect units.  The man was unparalleled.

Until SS Lyra kicked his knees backward.  Sure, it wasn't AoE, but that's almost to her benefit.  Lyra has guaranteed flinch, and because it's a passive entirely, she can queue up an extra move before the foe adjusts their attack.  A major flaw in sleep and flinch stalling tactics is that the one using sleep or flinch gets outpaced when the foe switches moves.  Lyra removes this problem entirely. Then has stronger debuffing game than him.  And can buff team crit and an ally's offenses.  And had Grassy Terrain, and pulled a Lucas by removing her gauge costs.  When it came to generalized disruption, Cyrus lost to Lyra pretty hard.   Especially in the Gauntlet meta, flinch just has greater utility than sleep.

On the plus side, his Dark Zone competitor, Champion Calem, came with hilarious restrictions.  Only ever 2MP, locked behind needing 10 hits from Buddy move, buffing kit as a support was skewed for physical DPS in a type where special is the way to go.  Karen getting her grid expansion, Summer N dropping in with pretty impressive numbers, and then landing wholly on Champion Marnie?   Calem meshes okay with them, but is mostly redundant.  Meanwhile, Cyrus had the Zone and disruption, which worked out great for them, considering Marnie and Karen also have high flinch rates.  Basically, this is a rare moment where the support role compression did not outperform the Tech. The only time Calem outperforms is frankly Masked Royal, who helps unlock his buddy move quickly and loves the physical moves up next.

The thing is, some tools are just good, and will always be good.  Sleep is one of them.  AoE disruption is fantastic, and Cyrus will never actually lose that effect. As a result, unlike Lucas and Cynthia who are potentially facing competition one day, Cyrus can just shift into being one of the most effective sleep bots the game has to offer.  How terrible for him.

SYGNA SUIT DAWN Dawn was...odd.  Obviously I loved her, I love when units are weird, but she was not particularly well received.  A defense buffing sync pair that cut its own defense and has limited heals?  That's weird.  Her sync was a nice heal, but only for allies, not for herself.  I know why they did it that way, but I also don't wholly agree with it.  Her expansion should have Synchro Healing, just saying.  All Ramped Up was nice, because it allowed her to combo perfectly with Caitlin, who just needed some Terrain support.  In fact, capping crit and giving a little special attack was something a ton of sync pairs appreciated, especially while being bulked up as much as Dawn provided.  She also had some unusual tools like Critical Countdown 9 twice for fast ramping, gauge acceleration, Sync Regen, Danger Damage Guard; all sorts of neat tools she could not access all at once.

The thing is, the excitement of Dawn feels very short lived.  I still like her, but she's far from what she felt like.  Sygna Suit Morty came in not long after, offering much better healing and comparable buffs, while also being good on gauge and compressing Sun.  She lost that one instantly.   Summer Hilda may not have crit, but the inversion of foe's buffs was fantastic for Gauntlet, while Dawn didn't have much unique for the mode.  And then of course, if you're losing to Morty, you're getting bodied by Aura Cynthia.  And if you were looking for a good Psychic support that can help with stacks of moves up next, C!Bede is right there, bro.

Dawn is a bit of a relic, in desperate need of an update.  At the time, I think they were concerned about the combination of defenses and crit.  I don't think that combination had existed on a single button before, and there was likely concern about how strong it would be.  And adding in the moves up next effect?  Dawn was the second unit ever to provide it as a support; they didn't know what it would do.  So they limited it.  They gave her a severe limitation, just like they did with Anni Steven and Anni Lillie, and shortly thereafter we find out oops, overshot that one a bit, now they're not that good.  The blessing is, PokeFair grid expansions are happening, and they gave one to Bede so they're willing to go modern.   Dawn could cut the queue.  And I hope she does.  This was such a cool alt, and it hurts a bit to see it languish in comparison to the better options that dropped along the way.

Inspiration: The tale of this mainframe computer horror game begins with an earlier, more recalled game. A man by the name of William Crowther found he had an excess of free time that he used to make a video game to play with his 2 daughters on his work computer, a PDP-10 mainframe. Inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, he wanted it to be simple enough for them, and so he set out to design an RPG straightforward enough for even the nontechnical to enjoy. Coworkers would find it saved on the mainframe computer as ADVENT, play it, and share it online, causing it to be found on PDP-10s across the nation.

HAUNT - 1979 - Tops 10 Carnegie Mellon University’s John Laid would be inspired to make a horror version of ADVENT, calling it HAUNT, initially in 1979, but receiving updates for years to come. It tells the story of a picnicking family who were attacked by a moose, with the mother not making it and the father growing obsessed with her fate to the point of acquiring the land where the incident took place and vowing to find her soul to return to human flesh. He was dismissed as having gone mad from grief, not only from his wife’s fate but his child’s kidnapping shortly after. You are his kidnapped son, now grown up and having never known your biological father but find out you are his next of kin and plan to just sell the property to the government, but before selling it, you want to check out this residence, perhaps out of curiosity or uncaring greed of seeing what you can take and what you will sell.

Unreliable Narrator This set up not only establishes the world but the sanity mechanic as, throughout the game, you may quickly suspect your character is afflicted with the same hereditary disease as your father. This kicks off with you waiting at a bus stop and upon getting on the bus to go to the house, you realize there’s no one else on the bus, including a driver. The doors slam close and the bus takes off (a quick tone setter for the game). As it gets you there, the doors open and you’re sure you heard a voice from the speaker as if a driver were there announcing “ALL OUT, END OF THE LINE.” With the hereditary disease being established alongside your father going mad in the story, it creates an uncertainty of how reliable your protagonist’s perception is. Are you seeing real danger, only seeing a hallucination, or will you be harmed by a hallucination? Seeing the mansion in the distance, you can approach the front buzzer on the gate, which, if repeatedly buzzed, someone will eventually answer and ask you questions which can range from asking what your sexual orientation is (prompting the person on the buzzer to ponder what your mother would’ve thought) to the fourth wall-breaking question of what was the first production system with more than 1500 productions?- the answer being the game that you’re playing.

They will let you in, and you can begin exploring the mansion itself. You can hear noises that sound like distant screams, and one might lead you to a room with a closet where what lies within answers one question and raises another. You find your late father, whose last act was scrawling on the wall a message to you, claiming that he saw you and your redheaded wife in the paper and hopes your daughter won’t inherit the disease which he has succumbed to, after not being able to take care of a crop that can combat it, causing him to pass, failing to resurrect his wife, your mother. Now, earlier in the game, an urban legend is established that the reason people who did a wellness check on your father never returned from his house was because the legend states you have to be blood to survive, but I guess not. Furthermore… who answered the buzzer? Has someone moved into this house after your father, or was the person on the buzzer an example of your inability to trust your own perception? Perhaps someone masqueraded as a hallucination of your father to expedite his downfall and has that advantage over you now too.

What can you trust then?

Well, the game has no shortage of dangers while contrasting surprisingly well with more light-hearted humor, like finding a monster rising from beneath a sheet in the basement who greets you with “Trick or Treat.” Handing it candy you can pick up elsewhere causes it to run out of the room, through a wall, with excitement. The tone is humorous while keeping you on edge, like seeing Dracula rise from a coffin in one room, which you might think is a humorous discovery, but also that’s Dracula, so you might want to run away out of fear, hoping you lost him.

It also had moments that truly impressed me.

You can walk into a dungeon where someone is imprisoned. Setting this person free, you can talk but are now cellmates. Later, I found through Nathan Mahney's Let's Play that you can try to kiss them, which they accept and prompts the game to tell you to go for a homerun, which results in a relationship of this between talking and sleeping until after who knows how many days or weeks you’ve spent together in this dungeon; they say goodbye and turn to smoke in the air. Such a surprising detour that then just lets you escape but now with matches that your partner found and gave to you during the days you were trapped together, if they ever existed at all. Did days actually pass, or was this like one of those dreams where years of your life are lived and connections built with loved ones that never existed?

The Sanity Meter The sanity mechanic is not just for narrative. It also needs to be maintained throughout the game. As it drains, you grow dizzy. Your hands sweat, and if you let yourself go completely mad, you will end things yourself, giving in to a rumor that those who enter the house all meet this irresistible compulsion. Is that what happened to your father? Can’t be right? The rumor says it’s because they’re not blood, or is the urban legend itself only trying to piece together the truth while not entirely on the money of what is true? Is it Dracula!? Is the monster in the basement, your father turning into Frankenstein in trying to resurrect your mother? Most importantly, what was the crop your dad mentioned in his message that could combat this disease? Well, you can find a dried garden, and watering it will grow orchids that eating will gain sanity back, but only if when asked who you are, you answer that your name is St. John, and this is some obtuse adventure game nonsense, but the clue to this answer is that in your father’s message to you, he mentions seeing your redheaded wife and your daughter in the paper, as in the funny papers, not the news. It’s a Brenda Starr reference—that really raises the question of sanity! In terms of adventure game solutions, it's far from the upper tier in leaps of logic that I hear them taking, like the "cat hair mustache puzzle" in Gabriel Knight 3. Naming yourself St. John can automatically make your sexual orientation redheads, perhaps making the person in the dungeon an allegory for your wife. Do you have one? Are you sharing in your father’s disillusion? Creating the mind over matter to believe this placebo crop could keep your mental destruction at bay? The humor of it aside, I do find this to impressively blend the gameplay mechanic with the narrative.

Scale & Variety When it comes to the scale of the game, I’m also taken aback by just how big this game is. You can really find your fear. I suffer from megalophobia, or the fear of large scale. Anything from being next to a docked ship to even a room with a high ceiling can set it off, so in comes an elevator in HAUNT’s residence that descends down and opens into the airlock of a bathysphere with a speargun inside that takes you down into a massive body of water with a sea monster. Now I don’t have a thalassophobia, but an underground area large enough to house this body of water and massive creature didn’t paint the most comforting imagery in my mind. At first I wondered how this would help Dad bring Mom back, but then I found there’s a treasure chest at the bottom he must have been trying to research, or we’ve both gone crazy from that disease, and I’m just reaching into a fish tank with an eel. That would explain the ability to summon and befriend the sea serpent.

Substance Mechanics This game is a trip and that's literally a mechanic! You can find more than one substance, one of which can give you a hallucination telling you to “follow the wire,” referring to music playing in a section of the house. If you follow the music player’s wire, it leads to a secret stash of another substance that will drive you to eat through your inventory. The cops will even arrest you if you kept substances on your person by the end of the game.

Multiple Endings Treasure you want to take can be brought to the front of the house, but finding a way to leave was not as straightforward as I anticipated. You can dig up a grave outside and keep digging, past remains, deeper and deeper in that spot until hitting a pipe whose emergency release began filling the grave with oil, giving me a moment of panic that I just dug my own tomb, only to manage to scale the dirt wall out and see a maintenance truck came to fix the oil spill. Upon escaping, you meet with a James Watt from the government, and you’re actually given the choice to preserve the land instead of go through with the sale. If you preserve it, you ride off into the sunset. If you choose to sell it, you will be charged by a moose in front of Watt, mirroring the same fate as your mother.

Conclusion With all the content in this game, I can’t help but wonder how different the 1.0 of this game was from itself after all the updates. If James Watt is the real-life United States secretary of interior only toward the end of this game’s development, does that mean this character was nameless in the initial release, a different character, or the scene as a whole didn’t exist? This game not only left me with an impressed satisfaction of the adventure games can take you on, but it also reminded me that different updates of games can be considered lost media, and this game serves as a time capsule of its creator’s sense of humor and interests of the time that likely outlive him. I hadn’t considered what of ourselves we leave behind in our creative works that will catalog who we were after we’re gone. You might find that comforting or a true horror at the thought of what people might do with it.

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell   How Do You Get From Tamassee to Seneca?   If you were my package, YOU DON'T!!   On 12/2, my package traveled to Charlotte.  Then it globetrotted to Greenville, where it sailed off to Seneca.  On 12/6 the limp PACKAGE (without its contents) arrived at the home of my friend, Peg.  She immediately contacted me. Upon visiting the local P.O., I informed the agent that I WAS P.IFFED.

I was extremely  PIFFED!     (Background information) I am a refined Southern woman.  I detest hearing that common expressed "Pi_ _ed Off!   Straight-laced Southern women (who never sweat-- WE GLISTEN) prefer to be PIFFED OFF! The agent informed me that it was all my fault for not using Turbo-Maxed- to the 10th Power Tape.  I don't know why she did not inform me of such when she accepted my $5.45 postage fee.  She provided me with a list of phone numbers for all the post offices where the package had sojourned.  "Call them, but be patient.  They rarely answer their phones," says she.   My Parting Request  to her:," Please refund my postage charge." To which she declared: "I am only too happy to do that, as soon as you fill out  #29HE686LP  FORMS in triplicate.  Unfortunately, we are out of them at this time."  By the way, the book I sent to my friend Peg was entitled "Lord, Teach Me Patience, BUT HURRY."  Gentle Readers:  I wish you a very Merry Christmas! Emery of Galloway, Ohio was in the October 8, 1924 Keowee Courier). . .Editor Keowee Courier. . .As a reader of your paper I will drop you a few lines, and if you think they will interest your readers you can insert them; if not, I know that you have an ample waste-basket for all unacceptable manuscripts. . .I was reading in the "News from Bounty Land" and it made me think about by-gone days. I went to school at Bounty Land when I was quite a small boy (I think it was in the year 1856). I will mention a few families from whose homes children attended school at that time: The Striblings, Bowers, Halls, Doyles, McCrarys, and a great many others that I could mention. . .An old gentleman, Mr. Penney, was the teacher. Sam Dendy attended the school at that time. He was quite a nice young man. He was a favorite with the small boys. . .The writer from Bounty Land mentioned in her news items about visiting Oconee Station and the buildings at Tamassee. I wondered if those buildings are on the old Tamassee farm? I was partly raised on the Tamassee farm. My father moved on that farm in the year 1847. Elam Sharp owned the farm at that time. He employed my father as overseer. We lived in what was called the red house. It was a big two-story house on the west side of Little river. Mr. Sharp built a brick house on the east side of the river afterward. . .The first school I attended was at the old Cheohee church. An old Mr. Cowan was the teacher in the summer and old Mr. Sheppard taught the winter session. . .   TO BE CONCLUDED NEXT YEAR!

Church Prayer Group  It is imperative we continue asking - pleading - with God that He be Glorified and turn more hearts to His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ.  Linda Springstead (our pianist) has agreed to facilitate our prayer group while I am away.  She has such a heart for the Lord and a desire to serve Him.  Prayer group will resume in January and will occur at 11:15 - 12:00 noon following Bible Study on Monday mornings at Salem Methodist Church.   ALL are welcome even if you don't attend Salem Methodist Church.  Prayer is a blessing from God for everyone. certain songs (aka, indie band patrick): David, owner of the recently re-opened Perennial gallery in New York gets dragged by Stevie to a show where the indie band the Creek Waders are performing. He crosses paths with the frontman and guitarist, Patrick, and finds himself intrigued. Mutual pining, David being an idiot, discussions about queer art, Stevie ex machina, etc etc.

gather up the avenues: David and Patrick dated while in New York but broke up, now neither of them can stand to be in the city because of all the memories. Patrick drives back home to Canada, but ends up stopping in a small town with a ridiculous sign, while David flees to the place with the stupid name his dad bought him for his birthday when he was a kid. I think you can see where this is going.

come on, get higher, loosen my lips: five times alex and henry talk on the phone and one time they wake up together (workshopping this description lol). Actually hoping to finish and publish this in 2023 but we'll see how it goes.

I have a lot of other projects I'd like to finish but I'm not going to list them all here. We'll see how this year goes. I also love an event (clearly) so plan to participate in some of those as they come up (hopefully for both SC and RWRB).
