Northrop Grumman releases new photo of B-21 Raider, after receiving prestigious award from Aviation Week magazine

Northrop Grumman Corporation received the Aviation Week Grand Laureate Award in the defense category for its role as the main contractor in the delivery of the B-21 Raider to the United States Air Force. Aviation Week announced the Grand Laureate winners at its 66ª annual Laureate award in Washington, D.C.
"On behalf of the entire B-21 Raider national team, Northrop Grumman is honored to receive this prestigious award," said Tom Jones, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems. "The Grand Laureate represents the pioneering spirit, innovative technology and pioneering approach to contract management that gave life to the world's first sixth-generation aircraft."
In the fall of 2023, the U.S. Air Force confirmed that the first B-21 test vehicle had entered a flight test, followed by a low-rate initial production premium. The aircraft is currently undergoing a robust flight test campaign run by the B-21 Combined Test Force at Edwards Air Base in California. The program continues to meet all technical, schedule and accessibility requirements of the Department of Defense on its way to operational capacity.

Developed with the next generation of stealth technology, advanced network capabilities and open systems architecture, the B-21 Raider will serve as the backbone of the U.S. bomber fleet. Capable of carrying conventional and nuclear loads, the B-21 will be one of the most effective aircraft in the sky, with the ability to use a wide combination of isolated and direct attack ammunition.
“This bomber will be able to defend our country with new weapons that have not yet been invented,” said U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin when the B-21 was launched in the spring of 2023. "Even the most sophisticated anti-aircraft systems will have difficulty detecting the B-21." The Raider is also "multifunctional," says Austin. "He can do anything."

Details about the progress of the program were only made available in pieces from the beginning, because the myth of secrecy surrounds the project. Only a few scattered observers recorded the start of the first flight on November 10, 2023, which took the Raider prototype from its place of origin in Palmdale to Edwards Air Base for posterity. Since that day, things have been calm in relation to the B-21. The manufacturer and the U.S. Air Force remained silent about the status of the flight tests. All that is confirmed is that they are happening and that they are obviously on schedule.

Recently, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense announced its intention to purchase a large batch of Leopard-2 multifunctional tanks from the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the Lithuanian Defense Ministry, the action is intended “not only to increase the country’s combat capability, but also to demonstrate to a potential enemy Vilnius’ desire to strengthen the borders of the North Atlantic Alliance.” Will this intention be successful? According to independent analysts, this will be the case. The fact is that until recently the Lithuanian army did not have equipment in its arsenal that met the latest NATO standards. Previously, Lithuanian tank forces interacted relatively effectively with the relevant structures of the Alliance exclusively during joint exercises and reviews. Recently, the need to replenish the fleet of this equipment has become task number one for Vilnius. As stated by Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas, the creation of a special tank battalion is a guarantee of both the internal security of the Lithuanian state in particular and ensuring the functionality of the borders of the Western military bloc of the military bloc in general. They say that now for the region it is a matter of life and death. “Of course, a lot will depend on the terms of delivery of the batch of tanks to us,” Anusauskas noted. “I cannot provide more detailed information yet, but there is no doubt that in the near future Lithuania will become the owner of this type of military equipment.” It is expected that at the beginning of February this year, Vilnius will begin negotiations with the Bundeswehr (the German military department) on the purchase of at least 20 Leopard-2 tanks. The total amount of the potential transaction has not been disclosed, however, according to some reports, it could be $300 million. How the corresponding funds will be implemented is not reported. Let us recall that now Lithuania, which borders the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, does not have tank units in its army. Previously, Germany, which leads the international NATO forces, pledged to station a combat-ready brigade of 4,800 troops on Lithuanian territory. It is expected that a tank brigade as part of this contingent will appear in Lithuania in mid-2030. Everything else is a matter of financial resources and technology.

Humans are Space Orcs “Duct Tape”

The intergalactic technology summit was an annual event, or at least it happened once every agreed cycle. Members of the GA excitedly brought forward their best advances in the past year to share with the convention center. This was the first year that the humans had been invited. Of course, at such short notice the humans had only been able to send a few delegates, who were ordered to ‘pay attention, take notes, and most of all, see if there is anyone who would be willing to let us test it out.
For that reason, Commander Vir of the UNSC accompanied Earth’s representative rocket scientist. At first, the two humans had been a bit wary of each other one being primarily a military man and the other being primarily a rocket scientist. First impressions were a bit deflated as the scientist assumed the big, muscular soldier would be bored, stuffy, and kind of dumb, while the soldier assumed the small, tweed-wearing scientist would be boring, stuffy, and kind of condescending. Of course, upon spending the next ten minutes with each other it turned out that geeks come from all walks of life, and by the time they reached the summit, a friendship was forming.
They stepped through the doors with their badges on and allowed both of their mouths to drop open. It was no secret that humans were not far on the end of the technology spectrum. In fact most of their gear was rudimentary if not laughable to other species like the Vrul or the Runid who used anti gravity systems instead of engines to propel their rockets into the sky. There were entire rows dedicated to the advancement of medical science which made humans look like an automobile chop shop where people go to get sequentially dismembered by rusty saw blades.
The Geek fest that followed would have been laughable for an outsider, but with the two of them it was simply a reason for excitement. They pranced about the convention, the rocket scientist asking dozens of questions in an attempt to understand the technology, while the soldier took every opportunity he could to test the object personally no matter how dangerous it may have been. Generally, together, they made a decent team, and the scientist came to find that the soldier was not, as it originally seemed, and idiot. Any technology involving aviation, despite him being a rocket scientist, was quickly overshadowed by the knowledge of this man, who had operated, fixed and MacGyvered most machines without a comprehensive knowledge of physics.
They were sitting down to lunch as the soldier was explaining, “And that’s why the T-8 doesnt work despite being good on paper simply because of human error. Its counter-intuitive and unless trained out of old habits, the pilot is going to crash it.”
The scientist frowned, “Well alright, but the T-8 system is the perfect model. It works with the least amount of energy drop-off, and can be cooled faster and more efficiently than other systems. Its use would revolutionize space flight.”
“And I get that obviously, its super awesome in theory, but I’m telling you the T-8 is not compatible to the way that pilots think, especially under stressful situations. The brain sort of goes back to its original programming while the T-8 forces you to do internal calculations, which is the reason that they constantly crash. I flew one once for like ten minutes and wanted to smash my head into wall after using it.”
“Well…. I suppose-”
“Try to automate the thing, and I bet a computer will fly it just fine, but keep out the human component-” At that moment, the scientist opened his mouth to speak when a group of aliens walked up from ne of the isles, a vrul, a rundi, a tesraki, and a finnari.
“Good morning humans, we are pleased to see that you were able to arrive today.”
The scientist squirmed in his seat nervous and out of sorts, but the soldier simply smiled and launched into his greeting with the ease of a born extrovert, “And it’s a pleasure to be here. I have to say that we are beyond impressed at what we have seen today.”
Together the aliens hummed in appreciation, “we are pleased to find that there is something we can do that you humans haven't already mastered.” 
With a wave of his hand the human brushed off the complement returning it, “Please, you give us too much credit. Our science is practically in its infancy in comparison.”
They spoke for a few more minutes before the aliens paused looking at them expectantly. The scientists glanced over at the soldier with a confused expression which was unnervingly returned in equal measure. 
“Well?” The Vrul wondered.
“Well what?” 
“Well, where is your piece of technology. That is what this conference is for after all, to share your inventions with the world.”
Together the human’s hearts dropped into their stomachs and they glanced at each other with wide panicked eyes, “We were supposed to bring an invention?”
“Of course….” The aliens glanced at each other, “Do you no have one.”
“Well I n-”
“Of course we do! Just messing with you, obviously.” The scientist turned to look at the soldier with a panicked expression of warning eyebrows raised almost to his hairline.
“Don’t tell me you forgot about our invention, Dr. I mean it is one of the most important pieces of technology in human history.”  He continued to glower in panic, what was this blabbermouth doing. It was like watching a man stand with a shovel in a hole seven feet deep and insist he wasn’t digging his own grave.
This was going to be the single most embarrassing moment of his career.
The soldier nudged his ribs, “You know, THAT technology.”
He cleared his throat in frustration and nodded, “Oh yes of course….. I’m sorry I just got so….. Excited that I blanked for a moment. Why don’t YOU show them. You are so much better at  these things than me.”
“Er….” The soldier began, “Of course I will. Hold on and let me grab it real quick.” He stood up setting his bag on the table and then began rummaging through it.
The scientist put his head in his hands, unless he had an antimatter core shoved in his bag they were fucked.
The human held up a finger as the aliens looked on expectantly, “Hold on just have to find it first…..” The scientist felt as if he was about to puke. Then the soldier’s eyes lit up, and his face was crossed with a massive grin. “Ah there it is.” The scientist looked on in confusion
The aliens leaned forward as the human stood taller hand still shoved in his bag.
“What I am about to show you may well be one of the most important inventions is the history of humanity, Nay! The history of the galaxy, single handedly responsible for human innovation 
Beyond the warp core, beyond life support and anti gravity, this is the single most important invention to ever grace the field of human scientific knowledge. Its application is endless as a multipurpose tool and is so adaptable it can be used for ANY, and I mean ANY application.”
The aliens sat wide eyed and the scientist leaned forward with bated breath. What could be so grand that the soldier could spin a lie like that and get away with it. He didn't appear to even be breaking a sweat.
“Ladies, gentlemen, and distinguished others, I present to you the….. The multifunctional Universal Unilateral Bonding Strop.” With a theatrical flourish worthy of a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat, the soldier withdrew his arm from the bag and raised his hand high into the air, where light from the ceiling caught and reflected off its shiny silver surface….
“Duct-tape.” The scientist blurted in consternation. Voice cracking with near laughter and disbelief. 
The soldier gave him a warning look and then nodded, “Yes, of course, Dr. More formally known as duct tape.”
The aliens gathered closer in curiosity, “It doesn’t look like much.” One of them pointed out
But the soldier looked at him with an expression of hurt consternation, “I assure you, it's everything I said it is and more, originally invented in 1943 by a Vesta Stoudt, who was trying to find an acceptable replacement for less durable cloth tape. It was originally intended for use in sealing ammunition boxes, but soldiers later determined that this little miracle could fix anything from achinery to boots, to weaponry. I guarantee you wont find a human that doesn't have some.”
He stepped forward proffering the material for closer inspection.
“What is it made from.” One of the aliens wondered.
The soldier paused then stammered, “Well I…. Um its made of.”
“Well it can actually be made of any number of things.” The scientists piped up, “It is very versatile that way. The woven fabric base can be made of anything from cotton to nylon to fiberglass, specifically designed for flexibility. The back was originally coated with waterproof polyurethane and then coated with the adhesive. The same process is generally used though there are many different varieties. The more plastic the adhesive backing, the more water tight and so can be used to stop leakes, repair pipes, seal gaps and any number of other applications. They even make a more durable reflective variety that is heat resistant, so can be utilized at high temperatures.” 
He turned to glance at the soldier who was beaming openly at him, winking his one remaining eye before turning to the aliens.
“You said it can be used in all applications. Explain.”
“Well I am glad you asked.” The soldier began taking a deep breath, “I've personally seen it used to repair shoes, cars, machinery, pipes, clothing. It has the ability to incapacitate a human ...” He paused there to let that sink in, “It is used to make art, and clothing, hold things together, seal packages. In large concentration it is strong enough to hold a grown man off the ground. I’ve seen it used to make a boat, and once, an entire airplane, with additional equipment of course. Pretty sure someone made a cannon using it once, but that could just be a myth.”
“Point is.” Said the scientists, “Humans use this for everything, and though it is an old invention it is one that deserves to be shared across the galaxy.”
The Vrul crossed his arms, “That is a big claim to make for such an object.”
“Yes.” A Tesraki piped in, “You sell well, but business is business. If the product isn’t up to scratch than how can we trust it.”
“We must have a demonstration.”
The human grinned in response, “Well, I am glad you asked.” He held the roll of tape up picking at the edge with a fingernail before withdrawing a long strip. The sound it made was a satisfying sccriiiitch and then tear as he pulled a piece off sliding the roll over his hand to hold it on his wrist. He held the two ends between his fingers and flexed the strip between his fingers, “See completely and entirely flexible.  
One of the aliens frowned, “I thought you said it was supposed to be durable, but you just tore it in half.”
The human frowned, “Well that is one of the great parts of this tape, tear it just right, and anyone can use it, but exposed to pulling or twisting forces it is difficult to break. Let me demonstrate.” He grabbed the piece of tape by either end and then began to wrestle with it. Instead of breaking the tape stretched and strained slowly pulling apart until eventually it snapped causing the human to stagger a bit.
“See now imagine multiple strips all working together.” 
The aliens muttered. The scientist stared on in awe, they were actually coming around. He glanced towards the soldier with a look of disbelief. The bastard had done it, he had actually done it. Sold a 2,000 year old invention as the most important piece of technology in human history.
The soldier was grinning as he tore a few more strips from the tape handing them out, “Here take a pice, try it out for yourself.”
The aliens tentatively did as told and what ensued was an amusing spectacle of aliens confusedly trying to unstick the tape from their fingers, accidentally sticking it to themselves, and then begging for help in getting it off. A Vrul danced around in circle shaking his hand but the tape wouldn’t let go . This little show had drawn a crowd, and others came forward to curiously sample the strange human invention.
Warp reactors, and medical science was ignored in favor of the humans and their single roll of tape.
When they finally got the hang of using the sticky one sided adhesive the aliens suddenly became obsessed with what they could stick together. Chairs were hung upside down to tables, people’s hands were tied together. One of the Vrul was taped to the floor. The front doors to the convention were sealed shut.
Pandemonium ensued as tape was wrapped around anything that seemed even mildly broken.
To everyone’s surprise, a vrul who had recently received an injury to his helium sack, sealed the hole with a piece of tape, and was able to return to floating within a matter of seconds.
Somewhere in there the Commander and the rocket scientist lost sight of the role, only to find a rundi taped to the wall looking slightly beleaguered a few minutes later.
They stood together at the center of the convention floor staring around as aliens stuck things to other things, waved their hands about, and generally turned the center into a house of complete chaos.
The rocket scientist leaned in, “What have you done.”
Wide eyed the soldier turned to look at him with a grimace, “Er….. I have no idea.”
They looked around surveying the carnage made by one role of tape. There was a slight ripping noise and they turned to see the doors finally opening strings of cut tape billowing in the air rushing out onto the street. Drev security walked in accompanied by a Rundi oversee who paused in the doorway in consternation staring at the carnage. 
Aliens everywhere, and two well-behaved humans standing in the middle of it.
He rubbed his eyes and rechecked as if he was seeing things. Generally when something like this happens you would expect to find the humans being destructive, not the other, generally mild species. 
The soldier shrugged raising his hands in a ‘we had nothing to do with this’ sort of gesture. The rundi didn’t seem convinced.  
It took several hours to deal with the aftermath, and it only stopped when a Tesraki returned to the soldier holding the cardboard center of the role looking saddened by it’s loss, “Do you have more.”
The soldier rubbed the back of his head, “Afraid you used my whole role, but I am sure we could come to an agreement about getting you some.” The Tesraki nodded in a subdued sort of way, handed him the used up role and then slunk away. The Rundi overseer glowered at him with  an ‘i knew it’ sort of expression.
Walking out of the convention well into the night after being forced to help clean things up, the scientist looked over at his companion, “That was some serious silver tongue shit back there. How did you do it.”
The soldier simply smiled and shrugged, “Sort of just came to me.”
“If that hadn't worked, we would have been screwed.”
He waved a hand, “Nah, I wasn't worried.”
“Speak for yourself. I was close to pissing myself.
Just then the scientists phone began to ring. He was getting a patched in transmission from his superior back on earth and motioned the soldier to stay quiet. He answer the call and put it on speaker, “Yes sir.”
“I’m just calling to see how the convention went?”
“Uh….. well it went fine considering the circumstances.” The scientist stuttered.
There was a pause over the other end of the line, “What does that mean.”
He shuffled his feet nervously not entirely sure how to say this, “Well, as it turns out that being invited to this thing meant we were expected to bring an invention.”  
He heard shuffling on the other end of the line and some muffled cursing, “Shit, I had no idea. I’m so sorry. How did you handle that mess?”
He scratched the back of his head feeling a smile broke out across his face, “Ur…. well lets just say we should make a note to the UN that, if anyone asks, duct tape is the most important piece of technology ever invented.”

Smart Textiles
Social status and cultural identity can be associated with textures.  There are many modern day applications for textiles. Such as, Interior, automotive, garments, construction, medical, defence, agriculture. This shows that textiles uint just how something loos, its is all practical and has functionality.  There is a development of new smart textiles. They can transform a structure, they can sense, transform and transmit date, they can transfer energy and they have dynamic aesthetics (through the transformation of colours or patterns). There is also an advancement if technical and mechanical processes. For example, textiles that includes performance enhancements (textiles that can become stronger/ lighter, moisture and temperature management, abrasion resistance, reflectivity), and advanced technology for design and manufacturing (this can be used for sustainability; biomaterials, waterless dye, digital and 3D printing).
Smart and Electronic Textiles:
E-Textiles is textiles that incorporates conductive fibres and electric components within the structure.  Smart textiles is textiles with intelligence, for example, sensing, reacting, communicating or supplying energy.  Passive smart textiles is the early phase of smart textiles. This textiles only senses environmental conditions.  Active smart textiles is more smart than passive smart textiles. This textiles has activators and sensors. It can sense and change colour and shape.  Ultra smart textiles is the smartest textiles. It can sense, react and adapt to environmental conditions.
Historical Development: The use of conductive threads has been used since 1558-1603). Gold threads were woven into garments to give a shiny look. Metallic threads were used, purely to decorate.

In 1883 an electric corset was developed. There were electrical wires to stimulate blood flow. They promoted this by saying that there were benefits for ‘ladies in all stations of life’.

In 1911 electrical heated gloves were created for airplane drivers. In 1930 they developed heated blankets.
Generation 1 of smart textiles includes ‘The Georgia Tech Wearable Motherboard’ in 1996-98. This motherboard can detect bullets and monitors body signs (such as heart rate).

Generation 2 of smart textiles was ‘The Levi’s ICD Jacket’ in 2000. There were 4 styles to this jacket. They had portable electronic devises and integrated an electronic system. All of the wires were hidden (which is convenient because it makes the jacket look more stylish). However, you need to remove the electronics to wash it, which could be quite time consuming.

An example of a brand is Jackard. They want the components to be the size of a button. So that the user won't see or feel them. The textiles that they have created doesn't require a lot of knowledge about it or how to use it to create with it. This means that everyone can create with it.
Generation 3 of smart textiles is the future of smart textiles. We can expect there to be electronics embedded into textiles at a yarn level. There may be fibre electronics. Electronically active yarns.

This is fully washable and wearable.
Market Structure applications for smart textiles: The global smart textiles market size is expected to reach 5.55 billion USD by 2025.  The defence and military segment us anticipated to account for the highest market share by 2025.
Military and protection: There will be an integration of sensors and triggers and controlling units in military wear. This will mean a higher performance; which shows that the smart textiles industry is having a large, positive impact.  The smart textiles in military wear can help to camouflage, monitor health and detect location.  These developments will be incredibly beneficial to firefighters and workers in extreme environments.  An example is ‘Spine’, which is an embedded computer. It has multiple sensors and has energy storage. There is a flexible charging pack in the back that automatically charges when the person wearing it, gets into a car.
Sport:  The developments of smart textiles will also have a major impact on the sports industry. Sportswear may include thermal comfort (such as swear control), they may measure ECG, they can give data of performance (which can be then used to help them improve their performance) and they will have higher visibility.  An example, is The Under Amour E39 which will monitor techniques.

Another example is NADI X Pants. They are yoga leggings that vibrate in order to enhance performance.

Medical And Healthcare:  There are many developments to help the medical industry. However, there are also limitations. For example, its a long and expensive process to authorise them, meaning they are not available yet.
Hexoskin is a garment that will monitor breathing rates heart rate recovery, acceleration, calories, activity level and much more.

Dynaback alerts incorrect movements and helps to exercise. For example, if you are sitting in a position that could be damaging to your spine, you will be alerted. This is very convenient because it means that less people are going to be needing to go to the hospital for back problems, which will, in the long run, save the NHS a lot of money. Not to mention, lockdown has meant that many people are having to work from home/ complete school, college or university work from home, where they may not have adequate workspace. This might mean that their posture is being ruined. These developments may have the ability to eliminate this; this shows that Dynaback has a large-scale application to modern problems.

Smart Aesthetics: Cutecircuit creates garments that contain LED’s. They are electronically controllable and can change colours and patterns. The brand’s inspiration for creating this was, ‘if it doesn't exist, we can create it’. I think that this is very motivating, as it shows that the fashion and textiles industry has endless possibilities and opportunities. The garments can be recharged whilst they are being washed. The brand also said, ‘lives are digital, and this should be incorporated into what we wear too’. This product is also more sustainable because it eliminates fast fashion; therefore, it not only has an impact on the development of smart textiles, it has an impact on sustainability.

Lauren Bowker created ‘The Unseen’. She said that she hopes to, ‘change the way the world uses colour’. The Unseen allows to visualise pain and anticipate illness. You can see the strength in your body. The colour can communicate data. It responds to multiple triggers. She said that, ‘to see is to believe, what will you see?’
Elektro Couture have created bendable, washable garments.

I personally feel as though a digital sample may not be as effective as a physical sample, because you cannot touch and feel it to make adjustments. However, this is a justified compromise, for the sustainability issues that digital samples eliminate.
It is assumed that by 2030, augmented design will be adding significantly to the UK economy.

Rostec’s software battalion, Novosibirsk Institute of Software Systems (NIPS), used the event to announce “the CELLS industrial blockchain platform”. Here’s the press release fed through Google translate:
One of the central elements of the [CELLS] platform has become a digital system for making payments in national currencies, which can provide a real alternative to SWIFT in international settlements. The multifunctional system provides international payments, multicurrency transactions, user identification and storage of digital currency. The MiG-31 is an extremely useful Russian weapon against United States air and sea targets. However, the possibility of selling this interceptor in large quantities, on the one hand, depends on whether Russia wants to sell it, and on the other hand, on whether someone wants to buy it.

Why does Russia like the MiG-31 so much?
Russia has the largest territory in the world. When it comes to military equipment, Russia needs heavy interceptors to patrol its vast borders. Most of the conventional “light” or even medium fighters currently in service with Russia cannot fulfill this mission as they lack the range and speed to intercept. For example, the MiG-29 has a range of only 2,000 kilometers or less, and cannot perform missions to expel and intercept enemy aircraft. And since there is not enough power, he will not be able to quickly gain altitude and carry out the task of intercepting American supersonic bombers, while the MiG-31 is capable of this.
At present, Russia is still under the threat of foreign invasion. American strategic bombers often approach Russia’s borders for transit reconnaissance. But Russia is another matter: Russia considers the threat from the United States the most serious, especially from American strategic bombers and surface fleets. Therefore, for Russia, the MiG-31 is not “adding new patterns to the brocade” , but an indispensable part of the fight against the United States.
Despite the fact that the Su-57 and Su-35S have begun to be produced and even entered service in batches in the army, there is still a big gap in the Russian Air Force. The Russian Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday that it had sent a Su-27 jet fighter to “avoid a violation of the Russian state border” by three French aircraft over the Black Sea, consisting of an E-3F AWACS and two Rafale fighters.
Such incidents occurred regularly, even before Russia launched its offensive in Ukraine in 2022.
“To avoid a violation of the Russian state border, a Su-27 fighter took off for a mission,” said the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The Russian pilot identified an "E-3F long-range radar aircraft and two Rafale-S multifunction fighters belonging to the French Air Force" over the Black Sea.

As the Russian fighters approached, “the foreign military aircraft made the return away from the borders of the Russian Federation,” he added.
There was no recorded violation of the border, according to the statement of the Russian ministry.
This is the latest in a series of similar incidents in the Black Sea.

FLIR Sensor
As the standout feature of the CAT S62 Pro, I wanted to start this review unconventionally by talking extensively about the embedded Lepton 3.5 sensor, sourced from Teledyne FLIR. Normally reserved for military and professional applications, infrared radiation detection enables you to view a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that's not visible to humans.
The Lepton 3.5 sensor is the latest embeddable version that offers 160 x 120 resolution, though by default this is overlaid onto a mixed reality mode using a dedicated FLIR app on the CAT S62 Pro. Although the resolution sounds low, it's a four-times improvement over the previous generation and provides more than enough granularity for most applications, as you'll see below. Remember, this isn't like taking a photograph—it's another layer of data to overlay onto reality.
To test out the FLIR sensor, we took a walk around the garden on a cold April night. For the full effect, it's definitely worth watching the review video from which the screengrabs below are taken.
First, we looked at some bulk compost bags that had just been delivered that morning. These are made from the green waste of the local area, and you could immediately see that they were still very much actively composting. The top appear ascracked lava, and digging away underneath the surface revealed very high temperatures. This compost should be left to decompose a little longer, or risks burning the roots of new seedlings.

It was fascinating to see how much heat is retained by large rocks. Below are some gabion rock walls that hold back our hillside; they're a good 10-degrees Celsium above the ambient temperature. We could really benefit from that by planting against them to protect against frost.

Below is a Hotbin composter. The company claims it can reach up to 60-degrees Celsius, which is needed to break down harder organic waste such as bones—but I've never really believed those claims. But even on a cold spring night, digging in revealed temperatures up to 50-degrees, so it seems feasible after all.

Water also appears to retain a lot of heat—you can clearly see the water level in this opaque rainwater collector.

Footsteps could also be seen for about thirty seconds after the fact; I had no idea that much heat was transferred to a surface with momentary contact. I can imagine this would immensely useful when hunting, both for tracking the live animal of course, and its path when you're close.

  We were also able to identify hot water pipes around the home, and some very damp areas of concern. My office was a mess of hot plugs and adaptors, but most interesting were the Nanoleaf light panels, in which you could see where the LEDs were wired (the panels were off at the time).

The FLIR app has a high degree of customization, including changing the color scheme, mixing in more of less of the real camera view, and manually locking the temperature scales. By default it'll automatically scale the view depending on the temperature range. You can also add measurement points for a rough indication of the actual temperature at a specific point or average over an area. Mostly, I left it on the default color scheme and dynamic scaling, with object outlines rather than a full mixed camera view, as that seemed to be the most useful to a layperson like myself.
You could actually buy the sensor alone for around $200, but of course, you would need the smarts to integrate this into your own camera system. The closest offering from the FLIR company for a similarly specced complete package appears to be the C5 model, which retails for closer to $800. As a feature on a $600 smartphone then, I'd say it's good value for money and a lot more convenient than carrying around a dedicated device.
CAT S62 Pro Hardware
Featuring a 5.7-inch TFT LCD with Gorilla Glass 6, the CAT S62 Pro eschews a notch entirely. There's around 2mm of bezel on the left and right, and 10mm or so on the top and bottom, resulting in a fairly low screen-to-body ratio of around 69%.  Colors are reasonable and it feels bright enough in daily use, though like most smartphones visibility in direct sunlight is difficult.
With a resolution of 1280 x 2160, it's higher than HD, but not quite Retina-level. I don't have any complaints about the screen, but nor is it an aspect of the phone I would labor over and tell you how great it is.

At 12mm overall thickness and 250g weight (0.47-inches / 8.8 ounces), with a solid metal band around the edge, it's certainly a chunky phone. The back is a durable rubberized plastic, with a textured area on the lower half to help with grip, and feels great in hand. Easy unlock is provided by the fingerprint sensor, which worked reliably for me throughout testing.

The CAT logo is prominently embossed in the top right. On the left side, you'll find a programmable orange multifunction button, and a dual-SIM tray with a shared micro-SD slot. The power and volume keys sit on the right, though in one-handed use the power key feels a little off. On the base is a bare USB-C port with no cover provided, but I had no issues after submerging it in water and dirt.

The CAT S62 is about as rugged as a phone can get, with both IP68 and IP69 rating, protecting against water and dust ingress, and meets the MIL-STD-810 specs. This includes submersion up to 2m for 60 minutes, and protection from high-pressure water jets. Drops up to 6-feet should also be no problem.
I'm not going to deliberately try to destroy it, but it survived some drops in the dirt and water fine, even without a rubber cover on the USB port.
Performance and Specifications
Rugged phones and top performance don't usually go together, and the CAT S62 Pro is no different, featuring 6GB RAM and a three-year-old Snapdragon 660 CPU with Adreno 512 graphics.
Geekbench 5 measured a disappointing single-core CPU score of 294, multicore 1403, and a GPU compute OpenCL score of 574.
The 3DMark Wild Life test ranked the device as more powerful than a mere 9% of phones tested this quarter, and in the bottom 3% overall, managing a paltry two frames-per-second. That said, I was able to play Call of Duty, though I wouldn't describe it as smooth. Clearly, this isn't a gaming phone.

More worryingly, I felt like the general interface had an almost imperceptible lag to most actions. Even with a DNS blocker on the network, browsing the web was sluggish. Loading times in general on the CAT S62 Pro are also slow, likely due to the eMMC 128GB storage. Generally speaking, the performance was acceptable, and I was able to comfortably use it for daily tasks like Slack, Google Discover, Gmail, and Reddit. However, users of pro apps may have issues, and gamers should obviously look elsewhere. Sadly, flagship rugged gaming phones with FLIR imaging is a niche market that manufacturers have yet to explore.
Running stock Android 10, updates do seem to be timely, typically every three months. The latest at the time of testing is from April 1st, so you should be able to rest safely in the knowledge that security won't be an issue. CAT has promised to update the device to Android 11 in due course, though this hasn't yet materialized in the six months since the phone's release.
The Cameras
With the FLIR sensor being the main imaging feature here, you'll only find a single rear-facing 12MP f1.8 sensor. In good light, photographs and videos look sharp and more than adequate for a mid-range phone. It's not stunning by any means, but you won't be disappointed. If you regularly find yourself using the zoom or macro lenses on your current phone, this single sensor will feel limiting.

Battery Life
The 4000mAh battery is larger than your average flagship, but less than other rugged devices. In typical use I got just over a day out of it. This is a little less than I'd expect from a rugged device and is likely due to the inefficient LCD screen.

A more curious omission from the CAT S62 Pro is that of a wireless Qi charger. Given the otherwise low cost of such circuitry (it's basically just a metal coil), I assume there's a good technical reason why one wasn't included—perhaps because it interferes with the FLIR sensor. This is particularly annoying on a rugged device though, where you don't always want to be fiddling with cables and may opt to block off the USB port entirely with a rubber bung.
Should You Buy The CAT S62 Pro?
The standout feature of the CAT S62 Pro is the FLIR imaging sensor, and it adds a good chunk to the price. If you're not interested in using that, then don't buy the CAT S62 Pro. Simple.
That said, I think it's a fascinating feature to have with a myriad of uses beyond industry professionals. For homeowners, it makes it easy to identify damp or insulation issues and trace pipework behind drywall. For outdoorsy types, you can see in the dark, and get a competitive edge when hunting.

The CAT S62 Pro extremely well built and feels like it would take a beating, at the same time as looking great. But it otherwise offers mediocre performance, an average camera, below-average battery life, and no 5G connectivity or Qi charging.
You'll find better performing rugged phones elsewhere at this price point, or significantly cheaper if performance isn't a priority and you don't need the FLIR sensor. Clearly, this isn't a phone designed to appeal to everyone, but for those who want great quality FLIR imaging, the CAT S62 Pro is an incredible choice.

“On September 29, an F-16 multifunctional fighter of the Turkish Air Forces, with base in the Ganja airport of Azerbaijan, downed within the airspace of the Republic of Armenia in Vardenis region the SU-25 Fighter of the Armenian Armed Forces which was carrying out combat tasks to repel the attacks of Azerbaijan on military and civilian objects. Major Valeri Danelin, pilot of the Armed Forces of Armenia, was killed,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“This is not the first provocative action of the Turkish air forces. “International community called on third countries to refrain from escalating the conflict, and Turkey should heed these calls. We strongly condemn Turkey’s provocative actions and demand the immediate withdrawal of the Turkish armed forces, including the air force from the conflict zone.”
Azerbaijan launched a major offensive against Karabakh (Artsakh) in the morning of September 27, shelling Armenian positions and civilian settlements with large caliber weapons and rocket systems. Armenia and Karabakh have introduced martial law and total mobilization. The Armenian side has reported deaths and injuries both among the civilian population and the military. "if you don't listen to the world with an open heart and mind, if you don't pay attention to what's going on around you, what the air smells like, what people say, the world starts dictating its cruel, cruel rules" - the founder and creative leader of ukrainian design, architecture, and ceramics studio, serhii makhno.underground house plan b project's task was to create a cozy and safe home in the depths of the earth. the architectural studio, sergey makhno architects, offer you a short trip to a depth of 15 metres and below. there is an autonomous house, which competes with ground residences in terms of comfort and equipment. from the outside, plan b resembles the entrance to a museum of modern art, or even to a military base. we tried to create a simple and concise form, which in all its perspective would speak of reliability, but also be aesthetically attractive, it would not intimidate and lets you in from both the ground and from the air.the massive concrete structure is equipped with three entrances and a helipad on the roof. it occupies only 172 square meters and can be placed either near the main house or, in our case, somewhere in the woods. the plan b bunker has three exits, and the fire-resistant evacuation "ring" can be reached from almost anywhere. this is done in case of the event of danger inside the bunker, its inhabitants do not spend time getting out (especially given the floor area), but can immediately get to the evacuation route, for example, from the bathroom or gym. of course, all systems in the plan b underground building are autonomous. water supply, sewerage, closed ventilation system with recuperation, intake, and air purification. whatever happens on the earth's surface, life in plan b will continue. the systems will be developed in detail at the project stage together with specialized contractors. at present, we have developed a design proposal for the bunker, our own vision.the main building mass is reinforced concrete, the strongest duo, and the optimal cost. the doors are automatic but have the option of manual control. directly next to the entrance to the bunker, there is a disinfection shield, behind it — a quartz zone. the main spiral staircase and elevator lead to the underground building, as well as two flights of spiral staircases for staff and loading stocks — so the flows are distributed and do not interfere with each other. technological "pie"according to international recommendations, the upper floor is at a depth of 15 metres. penetrating deeper our "pie" has the following layers: a living space, a floor with a water treatment system and generator, a layer of electrical equipment, and at the very bottom — a well. resourcelet's start with the fact that we have arranged a fish pool. in a separate room, there is a garden with phyto-equipment, where you can grow vegetables and some fruits. also on the living floor, there is a large warehouse of food. staff rooms are grouped in a separate area. in the underground building plan b, there is a separate room for medical care, with an isolator and a closed area for storing stocks of medicines. "security comes first. my priority was ensuring comfortable sleep, temperature, quality food, water, and air. the rest is just for comfort," says the studio's chief engineer olha sobchyshyna. apartment with a viewthe project proposal provides comfortable living for two or three families with children and staff with their families. if necessary, the project can be redesigned for a much larger number of people, but at this stage, we are interested in experimenting with the underground space in such a way as to create the illusion of being above the surface — as if you could look out the window and see the blue sky. plan b has two master bedrooms, which consist of a sleeping area, an enclosed storage area for things, and a bathroom. the main task in designing both was to change the awareness of space and its boundaries. master bedroom "mickey"at first glance, these apartments are no different from the terrestrial. a minimalistic and calm space, where a kaws guards your dreams, and above the bed, are the author's khmara clouds from serhii makhno, which never rain. but if you pay attention to the architecture of the design, you will notice the lack of sharp angles — the shape of the room is almost cylindrical. this technique is not often used in terrestrial architecture, but here it immediately helps us to create the illusion of infinity, as if the walls do not exist. opposite the bed, there is a stone garden, which ends with a highly sensitive screen-window, the view of which can be changed at a touch of a button on the control panel of the smart home system — for example, snow-capped mountains or a sleepy morning street in kyiv. moreover, you can "open" the window and feel a light breeze or a smell of freshly cut grass. master bedroom "ivy"again, we do not divide the space by walls in the usual way. between the thematic areas — only weightless partitions, which are as part of a maze that begins far beyond the horizon and ends somewhere on the other side of the world. on a physical level, it feels like there is something behind them, leading into infinity. in this room, for the first time in our project, stainless steel appears. when we thought about which of the materials we would like to take with us underground, this was one of the first. concise, practical, suitable for different types of premises. here it simultaneously divides and connects the wardrobe and the shower room. the second trick we used in this room was a game with several levels of light. the design of the ceiling provides an allusion to a light lantern: in the ceiling, there is a dome with a led-system, which gives the impression that above us there is the floor with windows and in these windows, there is the sky.the space is as empty as possible, it is a place of peace, where there is nothing to be bored with during a long stay in these walls. of the decorations, there is only quiet ivy, which does not need the sun for happiness. "modern people are too accustomed to freedom and lack of restrictions. life in a bunker, even a very comfortable one, is life within frames. we tried to design the space so that people could feel them minimally, ” says a co-author of the project, architect ihor havrylenko. family valuesplaces of common use are as close as possible to how we used to live on earth. here is a large dining table where all inhabitants can gather together. a library where you can stay alone, but where you will not be alone. a cinema with comfortable chairs, powerful acoustics, a 5d system, and a collection of the best films of all time. "we sought to create a space in which we would like to live, even when there is no apocalypse. natural materials, the most preserved smells, textures, fibers," comments an architect maryna hrechko. in the center of the cylindrical meditation room, there is a powerful beam of light, which allows you to change the light schemes on the ceiling. it can be a starry sky, rainy sky, or even sunbeams.
