River of Tears, 2021 弁の君/弁の尼 Ben no Kimi/Ben no Ama

As with Omiya for illustration #51, I struggled with the decision of drawing Ben no Kimi for #52. And similarly again, as soon as I started working on it, it felt like it couldn’t have been any other character. How could I have ever considered not including her!

Ben no Kimi plays a pivotal role in the Uji chapters in general and in Kaoru’s life in particular. An elderly servant of Hachi no Miya/the Eighth Prince, she weeps at the sight of Kaoru during one of his visits, confusing him. He eventually learns that the tears are because she's the keeper of the secret of his birth. She's the daughter of the nurse of his real father (Kashiwagi), and has been safekeeping the incriminating letters Kashiwagi wrote to the Third Princess before he died that reveal the truth of Kaoru's parentage.

Following this startling revelation, Kaoru frequently chats with and writes to Ben no Kimi, and Oigimi also mentally observes at one point that the two of them seem to get along really well. After Oigimi’s death, Ben no Kimi becomes a nun (hence the change in her character reference to “Ben no Ama”), and Kaoru converts Prince Hachi’s old home into a temple where she stays. He checks in on her periodically and they have long conversations together. It’s sad that they were primarily connected through two tragedies, but I really liked the friendship between them.

While looking for appropriate imagery for this piece, I found a pair of poems exchanged between Ben no Kimi and Kaoru in the Sawarabi chapter, where she makes reference to a river of tears and Kaoru then echoes the imagery in his reply. I’ve blended both the visuals of tree roots (a reference to Kashiwagi as the oak tree, and Kaoru), the bundle with Kashiwagi’s letters, and a branching river.

Three more illustrations to go…!!! I’m so excited, this series that I started back in 2018 is nearing completion…! As much as I tried to keep a consistent approach, there's definitely been deviations and evolutions, so it’s interesting seeing how that has taken shape over the years…

reason for url: OKAY SO two of akutagawa's (bsd) attacks are higanzakura [early blooming cherry blossoms] and sawarabi [freshly budded bracken]. those are my two favorite attacks so i combined the "kura" from higanzakura and the "bi" + an extra "i" from sawarabi to make "kurabii"! i just really love rashoumon's abilities djdndnd

ok so! im gonna assume you mean less about the technical bits and more the style?? if you meant more about coding, then try to find beginner carrd tuts on youtube lmao

so i picked a basic template and i deleted everything except for one container. i edited the container to be the way that i wanted (in my current case: bg is pink #FF77BC, border/container is black, font is sawarabi gothic, title font is bungee) and i gave the container two collums. i then put in my text on the left, my image on the right, and i also made a separate container that goes under the big one that only has one collum just to make you think that i somehow gave it three collums with one on bottom (different story on mobile ik). i copy/pasted the containers and edited each one to have their own text/images and added the control things to make them separate pages, then after trial and error i put in all the links until they worked

also the images that are currently in there are all cropped to be 16:9 (portrait), i cropped them outside of the website so that might actually matter a little

also also i'm this close to changing my carrd again so pretty soon this info will be useless 🙂😐

kimimaro’s own specialty taijutsu combination that can be deadly is performed successfully. creating these movements with the knowledge of his own capabilities, these taijutsus are known to be the explanation as to why kimimaro’s kekkei genkai was so feared. the dances are always performed in the following order.

DANCE OF THE WILLOW ( yanagi no mai )

the first dance is performed with long, blade-like bones grown from the ballpoints of his body ---------- meaning his palms, elbows, knees,    &&    shoulders. this dance uses spins, slashes,    &&    sweeping motions to easily parry enemy attacks, returning them with slashes    &&    punctures. 

named for the willow tree, this dance is quiet    &&    calculated, incorporating swaying motions like wind shaking the willow. as willow trees symbolize structure    &&    balance, this dance is not as active as the ones that follow.

DANCE OF THE CAMELLIA ( tsubaki no mai )

the second dance is performed by removing his upper arm bone ( the humerus ) through his shoulders    &&    modifying it into a bone-hilted shortsword. the sword is used to stab chaotically in irregular motions that often change angles    &&    cannot be easily predicted. this dance is based off speed    &&    irregularity, meant to stop the enemy from dodging continuously until it stops.

the name of this dance is hypocritical ; camellias symbolizing luck    &&    symmetry, while this dance is anything but. however, there is an elegance to this dance that is reminiscent of the flora. 

DANCE OF THE LARCH ( karamatsu no mai )

the third dance emits several bones from all parts of the body sporadically. this dance also uses counters, absorbing physical attacks to create greater counterattacks. this dance uses the slowest movements, active more as defense than offence. the needle-like bones extruding from his body can be used to block or trap an opponent’s strikes, making kimimaro untouchable at close range. the only time heavy movement is utilized is if an opponent tries to get too close, where he would use rapid spinning motions to slash    &&    cut.

larch is a floral essence used as a remedy for self-esteem. trapping    &&    countering are reminiscent of the symptoms this remedy is meant to treat, thus this dance’s name. weaker foe typically do not last beyond this third dance.

DANCE OF THE CLEMATIS ( tessenka no mai )

this fourth dance is where kimimaro becomes a deadly opponent. it is broken up into two parts ---------- vine, then flower. 

during DANCE OF THE CLEMATIS: VINE, he removes the entirety of his spinal column, modifying it with cartilage in order to use it like a whip. given its ability to grow    &&    alter into a sharper object with impossible range, dodging is difficult. he uses this dance to hold an enemy down for the second part. 

during DANCE OF THE CLEMATIS: FLOWER, he creates a drill-like weapon from his hand, fingers,    &&    wrist, using a considerable amount of chakra to create the strongest, most dense piece of bone imaginable. because the foe would be held back by the vine, a hit from such an exceedingly large weapon can easily be a fatality. 

clematis flowers symbolize ingenuity    &&    artifice. given this is a two-part dance that utilizes two impressive powers into one, the name is very fitting for this dance. it may not be as elegant in flow as the previous dances, but it is definitely the most effective. 

DANCE OF THE BRACKEN ( sawarabi no mai )

if the fourth dance was not fatal, this final dance is. in this dance, kimimaro creates anywhere between thousands    &&    tens of thousands of bone spikes from the ground, using them to hide    &&    sneak up on an opponent. the blades of bone indiscriminately slaughter whoever stands on the ground's surface. if the bones alone fail to bring down the opponent, he can become one with the field of bones, attacking from any angle    &&    any height. this final dance is considered a ninjutsu as opposed to a taijutsu. 

bracken are a genus of ferns that are known to grow to record-breaking heights,    &&    survive any type of weather. much like the performer of this dance, they are hard to kill, keep growing,    &&    are incredibly strong against wear    &&    tear. thus, this dance was named for its ability to be the final blow to kimimaro’s opponents.

ZeroZaki's Humanity test passes with flying colors

One day an average high school student finds out she has latent homicidal tendencies and is adopted into a family of killers by a tall man in white attire and long black hair. Zerozaki’s humanity test is a manga adaptation of a light novel of the same name by prolific author NISIOISIN. I generally have a love-hate relationship with his works for their boring drawn out dialogue and anticlimactic resolutions. This manga however was a short and delightful read from start to finish. It's important to note that this is actually a spinoff from the Zaregoto novel series and as such features a few returning characters.

To elaborate on the plot, the main character Iori gets her life turned upside down after being targeted by an enemy of the zerozaki family. Her friends and family are killed by Soushiki after they were permanently brainwashed by Naguma Sawarabi and only has soushiki zerozaki to turn to. The man in question is in search to find his elusive serial killer brother Hitoshiki Zerozaki. Naguma on the other hand wants revenge for his sister who was killed by Hitoshiki and kidnaps Iori to bait the Zerozaki family.The manga is fairly short and has enough twists and turns to keep readers wanting more. I felt that the manga could've gone into more detail about the killing names( assassin clans) briefly mentioned but then again, I imagine the original novel goes into more detail.

The artwork has a nice crisp and clean feel to it, making the character designs feel full of life.  Fight scenes are well put together and have a smooth flow. Since this is a Seinen manga, it doesn't exactly shy away from showing gore but doesn't embellish in it either.

NISIOISIN’s strongest skill is definitely his characterization and this manga reinforces that. Characters are quirky and are distinct from each other which make for interesting interactions.  Soushiki is technically a villain since he comes from a family of killers and most likely kills innocent people but his suave and charismatic personality makes it so easy to forget that. He's a total gentleman despite being a monster. Iori Zerozaki certainly resonated with me the most since we both go through life without real direction. We run from our problems while hoping to go find a solution. I read this manga during the worst times in my life and seeing myself inside the protagonist was so blissful.  A character I feel that could've used a lot more screen time was Hanamaki Kojika. He was a complex and conflicted character who unfortunately leaves the plot a few chapters after his introduction.

If you're the type of person who enjoys fast-paced thriller action, then Zerozaki's humanity test is the manga for you.

First Time to See the World

Chapter THIRTEEN

Sakura had known that members of the Kaguya clan resonated, or fed off of each other's blood lust. 

However, she had never expected it to be so powerful. Currently, she felt unbeatable. 

From the look of shock on Kimimaro's face, she knew that he thought the same.

The two of them were training in one of Orochimaru's personal lab turned training grounds. Sakura had been hesitant, but Kaguya had reassured her, saying that the walls of Orochimaru's labs were reinforced, and that the village wouldn't have to pay for fixing the damage.

That had proven to be a good thing.

Kimimaro started off her training by running over what she knew. She was younger than Kimimaro. When their clan had been wiped out, Kimimaro had just completed the most basic of training given to all Kaguya.

Still, the boy had been surprised when he saw that Sakura knew a few techniques, and Sakura explained how she had been taught the techniques, not to use them, but to know them. If anything had happened to the only son of the clan head, she would be next in line, after all.

Now that she looked back, it had been a very good investment on her mother’s part. 

After they ran through the basics, they made a list of what she could do, and then noted what she could improve.

Sakura's quickness at growing and replacing bones was impressive. However, her training had been very rough and rushed, and Kimimaro decided to start off by running through every individual technique.

Sakura spent days growing bones beneath her skin and manipulating her skeletal frame to defend herself from direct blows. She practiced pulling out bones from her arm to use as swords and memorized the location where she could extract them from as to be able to draw them out the quickest.The focused on growing bones faster and making her defensive structures stronger.

Days passed when Kimimaro finally deemed her read to learn the Sawarabi no Mai, the one dance she had not been taught as a child. The last of the six dances, the dance of the seedling fern was certainly the most powerful.

Consisting of growing the thousands of boned form the ground, anyone on the surface was immediately slaughtered. Even if one were able to avoid the attack, the user could easily finish them off, for the garden of bones was certainly their territory. They could merge with the bones and attack from anywhere.

The last part reminded Sakura of Haku and his ice mirrors.

If she had known this technique back then, Zabuza and Haku would most certainly be alive.

She shook these thoughts away and turned back to Kimimaro.

As Kimimaro had first said, once he had taught Sakura all the dances, he became more of a training partner than a teacher.

When they had their first spar a week away from the finals, they ended up destroying the training room. Apparently, when more than one Kaguya was there, presence alone was enough to lull the other into blood lust, which in turn automatically strengthened their power.

"Would this be considered cheating?" Sakura asked. "Would it be considered outside help?"

Kimimaro thought about this. "It is a clan trait," he said at last. "I do not know, but it is not something we do by choice, and it is not something we can surpass at will."

Orochimaru and a subordinate of his, who was often seen around the Sannin, had seemed mildly impressed with the destruction they had caused. Sakura recalled her clan mate reassuring her that the ground would not be destroyed, thus why they had decided to train there, but Orochimaru had merely laughed in delight.

The Snake Sannin had simply waved it off while his bespectacled companion inspected the room carefully and the next day, he formally introduced her to the man who followed him around. "This is Yakushi Kabuto."

Sakura nodded. “Kaguya Sakura,” she said.

Orochimaru smiled. "Kabuto-kun, Sakura-chan here is also a medic,” he said. "Why don't you see what you can teach her?"

Kabuto's eyes had widened the moment Orochimaru had mentioned 'medic', and had been delighted when Sakura showed him her advanced level of healing. He enthusiastically set out to teach Sakura about the chakra scalpels

Kimimaro scowled in annoyance when Kabuto droned on and on about the uses of the scalpels, and Sakura listened with a dangerous glint in her eyes.

"Don't be jealous, Kimimaro-kun." Orochimaru had chuckled.

The Kaguya stiffened, before mechanically looking to the side.

Sakura spent the last few days of her training training with her Kubikiribocho. No matter how much techniques she learned, she claimed that the sword was the easiest to use, and Kimimaro didn't object to this.

She spent her time on open training ground, waving the sword around like she had been using it forever. She could feel Zabuza and Haku hovering withing the sword, and that made her embrace the weapon more.

Sakura was still living in the Uchiha compound, but she was more absent than not. She left early in the morning, before the sun rose, and came back well into the night.

Sasuke had tried to catch her multiple times, and was yet to be successful.

She had seen him a few times in the evening, eating somewhere with his brother.

The habits she had picked up as a missing nin were hard to shake off. She could go on will close to no sleep, and when she was actually given the chance to sleep in, she found it hard.

When the day of the finals came, she decided to wait for Sasuke.

The Uchiha wasn't a morning person, but he had been trying his best to wake up earlier and earlier in the past month. Sakura liked to think that it was thanks to her.

Soon, Sasuke stumbled down the stairs, still looking half asleep but trying to appear otherwise. He paused when he caught sight of her, and just stared, as if to make sure that it was her.

"Why are you still here?" He asked after a while.

"Today is the day of the finals," Sakura said. "I don't have to leave early to train."

Sasuke hummed, frowning. "Okay," he mumbled. "Give me a sec." He rushed back up, and was down in five minutes, completely dressed and ready. "My clan will be coming to the finals, but Otou-sama said I can go first."

She nodded. Sasuke led the way out of the door, Sakura at his heels.

2019DL list

前回「1年間サブスクを聴いてきた中でDLした100枚」と書いて、以下にそのリストを載せるけど、ここのにあるのは80枚ちょっと。一度DLしたけど「やっぱあんまよくないな」と消しちゃったモノも少なくないので。それら全て思い出すのは難儀で除外してます。そうそう、書き忘れたけど、辺境FMの不人気プログラ���にもかかわらず、快く年ベス企画のゲスト枠に応じてくださった9dw/Nine Days Wonder/CATUNEの健介さん、惜しくも解散したPAELLASの頭脳でnever young beachのアナンくんのお二人には心から感謝申し上げます。アナンくんなんか、こちらがSNS見てなかったせいでPAELLASの解散を把握しないままラストライブの1週間前にDMしちゃってたわけで、なんと謝ったらいいやら。またいつか会えると確信してるので、そのときまで謝罪は取っておこう（失礼なヤツだな）。リストは2019年リリースの作品が中心で、昨年出会ってハマッた旧譜も含まれています。曲単位とアルバム表記が混合しててハマった方のフォーマットで記述。ちなみに下のはラジオで流した2曲（もう1曲あるキラーがラジオで選盤した中ではNo.1だったけどTumblrのクソ仕様で貼れないのでこちらで）。

今回の選盤は、意図せず初めて音楽メディアの年ベス結果を見（れ）ないまま選出したもの。なので当然、時���を鋭敏には捉えられていません。総評としては、特にドメスティックに顕著なように「浅瀬で済ませました」感がまぁ強いこと。安易で安直。猶予なしで不合格。もっとインディーの深部やアンダーグラウンド界隈攻めないといかん。★の数が多いほど高評価。最もエントリー数が多かったテクノ系部門の三つ星3タイトルはL’Eclair以外ラジオで触れてないけど、年末にじっくり考えがちなこうした企画の常として、収録後の中旬～下旬に滑り込んだという事情がありました。頭一つ抜けたNo.1、メルボルンのディスコ・ファンク・バンドmildlifeは2018年のアルバムのオープナーで、後からP-VINEが日本盤化してるの知って驚いた。これはハーヴィーの19年のミックス（ジャケださすぎる…）で知りました。Mount Liberation Unlimited（だからジャケよ…）は、昨年コンピをヘビロテして健介さんにもオススメしたストックホルムのニューディスコ系レーベルStudio Barnhusをチェックする中で出会った1枚。そういや昨年は肝心要のテクノ・ハウス系は掲載順最後で疲れちゃって載せないまま終わっちゃってたんだな…。今年も「掘りました！」と胸を張れるのはMLUとL’Eclair（貧相な情報源の中では貴重なソースだったstamp the waxで知ったやつ）くらいで、つまりは惨敗。ちなみに2年前に大興奮で「鬼早耳のRAですらまだ目をつけてない！」と騒ぎまくったGB、ついに追いついてくれました。

こうして改めて見直して気付いたけど、昨年そこそこ聴いた国内ヒップホップはほぼ聴かなかった。そこで挙げてたThojiは19年の初ミクステで大爆発。けどこれ「DLしたけど…」の中の1枚なんだよなぁ。KOHHからの流れでここ数年きてて、この辺の音がすこし食傷気味だったのかも。パンク熱は18年ほどではないけど継続してて、Granuleやshe luv itあたりは攻めたかなーとは思ったけど、がっちりとはハマりきれず。ENDONの新譜は即興やノイズ成分が高まるほど聴きたい方向性と離れちゃう感じが昨年に引き続き（即興やノイズ自体は好物だけど。相性の話）。最も気になってたENDONとSWARRRMのスプリットは配信なく未チェック。家族との盛岡旅行中に届いたLINEで同級生であることが発覚したNot bicycle（のユウタロウ）とstarscremくん、近いうちにラジオで会えそうなTrash Youthと、地元の20代の若き才能たちが好調だったのは嬉しかった。ざっとそんなとこでしょうか。ヴァイナル編は余裕があったらやります…
