her ability is the complex contamination -- the ability to pollute the laws of reality. polluting abilities, people, objects, liquids, and matter itself. additionally shapeshift and change her appearance besides the red markings on her eyes. can study an entire environment and the people in it by just the chemistry of the room.

Se encontraban en una posición completamente absurda. Sin haber reñido nunca, las dos mujeres ya casi no se hablaban. Sólo seis meses antes, si Otsugi hubiera visto a Kae coser, sin duda le habría preguntado qué andaba zurciendo. Y si Kae hubiera visto a su suegra montando el espejo, habría sacado el suyo para ayudarla a que se arreglara el pelo por detrás. Sin embargo ahora las dos guardaban un deliberado silencio. Y ambas se demoraban, porque ninguna quería ser la primera en marcharse.

Kae tiró de la hebra roja y la cortó lo más despaciosamente posible con los dientes, demostrando que no estaba apurada por terminar. Cuando acabó la labor la colocó desplegada sobre la mesa, mirando por el rabillo del ojo mientras lo hacía. Lo que vio no se lo esperaba y la desagradó. A la luz que entraba de lleno por la ventana pudo ver los ojos de Otsugi fruncidos por innumerables arruguitas. Conteniendo la respiración, Kae salió aprisa de la habitación y fue a la cocina.

Fuera había una atmósfera estival, apesgada de humedad. Los girasoles se habían echado a perder en aquel ambiente y, como nadie había atendido el huerto trasero en una temporada, los matojos crecían con vicio y el negro y fértil terreno estaba cubierto de yerbajos verdes. Era descorazonador y angustioso ver las matas prosperar mientras se perdían los cultivos. Las intempestivas lluvias de la primavera se habían encadenado con la estación lluviosa propiamente dicha, desprendiendo una sensación de inacabable murria. Los campesinos llevaban pintada en la cara la desesperanza de dos años consecutivos de malas cosechas. El arroz se había averiado porque los plantones anegados se pudrieron antes de poder agarrar.

Kae, intrigada por ver cómo estaría el huerto de plantas medicinales, caminó bajo el orvallo, anhelando un recio aguacero en consonancia con sus vehementes emociones. La desavenencia con su suegra la tenía preocupada y molesta hasta el punto de que ni siquiera prestaba atención a la peligrosa crecida del río Kino, que amagaba desbordarse, y que ya afectaba a los habitantes de la ribera. Vigilar el huerto de las hierbas le parecía una ocupación propia de la mujer de un médico. Además le aliviaba comprobar que verdaderamente tenía un cometido y una posición en aquella familia donde se veía constantemente sometida a sus padres políticos.

El agua convenía a las hierbas, que al fin y al cabo eran plantas bravías, y rebrotaban con mayor abundancia aún que la maleza. Kae vio atónita flores abiertas y tallos apretados de hojas apuntando en todas direcciones. Los dondiegos coreanos o daturas, de un blanco casi traslúcido, flotaban en un verdegal. ¡Qué feraces eran aquellas berenjenas locas! Venenosas, vivaces, multiplicándose a toda velocidad de las semillas que caían por doquier... de todas las plantas del huerto aquellos vástagos morados eran los más resistentes. Sus flores blancas, tan gráciles y bonitas de lejos, vistas de cerca revelaban unos bordes recios y afilados. Kae las aborrecía porque siempre le recordaban la primera vez que vio a su suegra, y aquellas memorias ahora la enfurecían. No se explicaba cómo se había dejado engatusar por las gachonerías de Otsugi, aquella mujer a la que delataban sus feas arrugas. Pensó que la obsesión que tenía por su apariencia y sus intentos de disfrazar sus arrugas eran señales de una pavorosa contumacia, amén de impudicia e indignidad. Ya no podía soportar ver a aquella mujer cincuentona mirarse a cada momento en el espejo. Kae sentía como si comprometiera su propia feminidad. Pero lo más irritante de la conducta de Otsugi era su frescura, sin el más mínimo asomo de disimulo o provocación, de manera que Kae no tenía motivo para reaccionar, lo que la fastidiaba todavía más.

Kae alargo las manos y arrancó las flores frías y mojadas. Las fue tronchando una tras otra como a porfía, demasiado enojada para quedarse mirando su rapacería y belleza sin hacer nada.

—¿Sabes cómo se llaman esas flores? —dijo una voz sobre su cabeza. Kae estaba tan embebida que no había oído acercarse a nadie. Atenazando las flores, la muchacha asustada se arrigió, alzó los ojos para mirar a su marido y trató de concentrarse en su pregunta.

—¿Daturas?

—¡Ah! ¿Entonces lo sabes?

A Kae, que las llamaba berenjenas locas de niña, no le apetecía recordar que fue su suegra quien le había explicado las propiedades medicinales de aquellas plantas. Pero mal de su grado tuvo que acordarse, así como reconocer que no tenía permiso para arrancarlas. Umpei percibió su turbación, se arrodilló junto a ella y comenzó también a recoger las daturas.

—No veo el momento de que granen en otoño.

Kae no tenía idea de a qué se refería y no sabía qué hacer con el mazo que tenía en la mano.

—Es una oportunidad excelente para experimentar. Ahora bien, hay que secarlas antes de se enmohezcan. ¿Dónde hay un rincón en sombra?

—¿Qué te parecen los travesaños de la cocina? Allí está bastante seco.

—Buena idea.

Umpei recogió otro manojo, Kae se hizo un enfaldo remetiéndose las amplias mangas en la faja y su marido dejó caer las flores en él sin decir nada. La lluvia ya no resultaba tan molesta. Kae estaba encantada de estar a solas con su marido, lejos de todos.

—Quiero que las limpies antes con un paño mojado.

—Eso haré.

—Y asegúrate de que lo tiras después.

—De acuerdo. ¿Es que son venenosas?

—No tanto como como el acónito. Pero hay que tener cuidado.

—Lo tendré.

—¿Ha vuelto ya Yonejirō?

—Creo que no.

—Avísame cuando llegue.

—De acuerdo.

Durante toda esta conversación a Kae le brincaba el corazón en el pecho. Era la primera vez que hablaban los dos durante el día en total intimidad. Estrechando firmemente las daturas en su enfaldo corrió a su cuarto. Allí se topó con su suegra que oreaba los quimonos, extendiéndolos pulcramente sobre el suelo esterado.

—¿Ocurre algo? —inquirió Otsugi suspicaz, escrutando a la muchacha empapada y a todas aquellas flores.

—Umpei me dijo que las pusiera a secar en los travesaños de la cocina —contestó Kae más circunspecta de lo habitual. Ver la patente perplejidad de su suegra le confería cierta superioridad.

Kae sacó uno de sus quimonos de algodón de la gaveta y lo rasgó sin pensárselo dos veces. ¿Qué suponía sacrificar un par de ellos para ayudar a su marido? Después de todo era a ella a quien le había encargado aquella tarea, y no a su madre.

Mientras Otsugi mascullaba algo que a Kae le sonó como: «Cuánto tarda este Yonejirō...», como dando a entender que de no haber estado ausente el ayudante a Kae nunca le hubieran encomendado aquello. Pero ella estaba demasiado contenta y siguió enjugando las daturas.

—Esas flores son venenosas. No pongas ese trapo con los demás. Que no se te olvide.

—Sí, madre, ya me dijo Umpei que lo tirara.

—Y luego lávate bien las manos. Sería muy peligroso que tocaras nada en la cocina si no.

—Sí, madre —dijo la muchacha alegremente a pesar del tono severo e imperativo de su suegra. Estaba demasiado feliz como para que le importara. Otsugi enseguida terminó lo que estaba haciendo, la fulminó otra vez con la mirada, y salió.

Las flores ahusadas, ya lacias, yacían completamente inertes, como si su misma ánima hubiera sido estrujada. Mientras las secaba y las iba colocando una por una en una zaranda, sus pensamientos se retrajeron a aquella primera noche junto a su marido. Se sonrojó, y suspiró, aliviada de que su suegra ya no estuviera presente.

September is my birthday month! So naturally I had a proper book haul. I’m very excited to now own the pretty editions of Nettle & Bone and The Goblin Emperor, and also a new bookcase (not pictured). The downside of having a birthday month is that people want to do things with you to celebrate it, which cut into my reading time. Storygraph is now cheerfully reporting that I’m behind, and I think I’m behind enough on my pages goal that I’m not going to manage to catch up. I’m trying to be stoic about it because 50,000 pages in a year is, in fact, quite a lot. Probably too much for anyone sane.

It also doesn’t help that even though I hit a normal number of books read, a good number of them failed to totally engage me or otherwise proved slower than expected. I had a DNF this month as well, my second this year. Oh, and I’m also behind on my reading because I’ve started writing again, and I’m trying to milk the inspiration for all it’s got before I inevitably conclude I’m everything wrong with the publishing industry. Or the internet concludes that for me. Again.

I took two books off my TBR shelves this month, though one is kind of cheating because I got it for my birthday.

Other authors that can join BSD

Come on, with the amount of side characters in BSD, I think we can throw more in. You already know what I said about Raichou Hiratsuka (with accessibility, she can easily be added as Yosano’s former colleague or something). 

Here are some other authors, and while I won’t go as extensive as I did for Hiratsuka, I might include some reasons why. All of this is from Wikipedia because I’m a scrub.

Takiji Kobayashi - He writes proletarian literature meaning he wants to support the working class. He wrote a short novel called “Kanikosen” (Crab Cannery Ship) which tells a story about workers who revolt against the company and managers. The author died due to violent torture at age 29 by the Tokko Police.

Takuboku Ishikawa - He was a poet who was known for his tanka and modern-style poetry. He supports socialistic values and naturalism and was acquaintances with Yosano. His major works were two volumes of tanka poems “A Handful of Sand” and “Sad Toys” plus his diaries. 

Naoya Shiga - He was a novelist and short story writer. Okay, I know he married his cousin, but we can leave that part out. His works were praised by Akutagawa but other contemporaries including Dazai were critical of him. We already have some connections.

Takeo Arishima - BSD has a habit of making male authors female (Kyouka and Kouyou). Takeo is another good option since one of his most notable works is called “Aru Onna” (A Certain Woman) which is about a strong-willed woman struggling in a male-dominated society. Yes, he and his lover Akiko Hatano both worked in literature and committed suicide together. He was critical of Christianity and supported socialism and humanism.

Yone Noguchi - Also known as Yonejirou Noguchi, he was a writer of poetry, fiction, essays, and criticism. He was fluent in both English and Japanese. he did live in western society for years and had various romantic encounters. Personally, I think this is an opportunity to use him as a character that’s a spy between the Guild and the Port Mafia or Armed Detectives Agency. 

Ayako Sono (and Shusaku Endo) - Both are Japanese Roman Catholics, but I find Sono far more interesting of the two (because there was more information on her). She was a hardcore conservative and can face off against Yosano since she believed that women had no right to work after giving birth or getting pregnant. She was racist and believed that South African people should live in a segregated zone. She had a best-seller that depicted domestic violence, but a lot of her works depicted normal life. She’d make a good antagonist.

Sawako Ariyoshi - She is far more modern than the rest, but she wrote about the racism within America (especially since she lived before and after WWII). She described relationships between mothers and daughters. I think she would offer a unique perspective, but I highly doubt them adding her since Japan seems to shy away from that dark side of their history (but what country doesn’t?)

Toyoko Yamasaki - I think she might be a little bit too modern to be considered though.

Kono Abe - This has a similar issue to the previous entry, but he has a connection to the universe already. He admired Dostoyevsky, Kafka, and Poe. He’s known for his surrealism and absurd fiction. That means it leaves a lot open for ability.

Ryotaro Shiba - He was known for his historical and detective fiction.

Juza Unno - He is credited for being one of the founding fathers of Japanese science fiction. A lot of his works were influenced by the defeat of WWII which he took as a hard blow. His scientific work was influenced by Tesla.

Chiyo Uno - Another woman ahead of her time, she was a writer and a kimono designer. She was a short story writer, serial writer, and magazine editor who was heavily influenced by American and European culture (like many in the 1920s). She wanted to be more than a wife and mother and became part of the “Bohemian world of Tokyo”. 

Masuji Ibuse - His history is interesting since he was a propaganda writer, but he was also a respected writer at the time. He was heavily impacted by the war and wrote a novel called Black Rain which was based on the historical records of the devastations caused by the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. Again, they will probably shy away from WWII, but I thought Black Rain sounded like a cool name, and I don’t really like the idea of shying away from that part of history.

Jun Ishikawa - In real life, he had interests in many people of the BSD universe including the dark era trio (Oda, Dazai, and Ango), Mori, and Mishima who isn’t canon yet but is suspected to be joining eventually.

Fumiko Enchi - She was one of the most notable writers of the Showa period. 

Ayako Miura - She wrote a novel called Freezing Point which sounds like a cool ability. She respected Dazai and Natsume.

Miyamoto Yuriko - She had a different view of socialism and feminism. She was an anti-imperialist, wrote about working-class women, was imprisoned for her beliefs, and was even turned away by fellow feminists because her work was “too masculine”. 

Yasunari Kawabata - He was a naturalist who was the first Japanese author to win the Nobel Peace Prize in literature.

Murasaki Shikibu - She was a very early but a very prominent writer. She wrote the famous “The Tale of Genji”. She was instrumental in developing Japanese into a written language and is regarded as a classical writer.

W. W. Jacobs - One of these things is not like the other! I blame @awkward-akutagawa and their Twitter AU for making me want to make a character that can resurrect people and @awkward-oguri for providing the fuel for this (they have an OC with a similar ability). Known for his humorous writing, he was an English writer (which makes me question whether he’s elligible for the Guild. Maybe he just upped and left?) He wrote a story called “The Monkey’s Paw” which is basically another cautionary tale of “BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR BECAUSE KARMA’S A BITCH”. That would be the basis for the ability. The rest is up to @awkward-atsushi and the other wonderful OC makers.
