the most attracted iruka’s ever been to kakashi is when he, during his term as hokage, digitizes everything in the village from employee IDs to fortifying security/access to different parts of government buildings to computers in every department and software to help streamline the mission assignment and report process to gps trackers/SOS signals for shinobi in the field, etc
+ kakashi absolutely plays into it

Get To Work
Words: 2181
Pairings: Kakashi Hatake/Maito Gai (and slight Kakashi Hatake/Ibiki at the end)
Warning: None
Summary: All Shikamaru wants is for his boss to figure out the pay and write up his cheque before the end of his shift. It's not a lot to ask, but here he is. Watching as Kakashi wastes time flirting instead of making sure his staff get paid.
Made with help from @sakura-rpblog
Predictable.
Every day, without fail, Maito Gai came through the doors of the little cafe Shikamaru ran, ordered a shake, and walked right back out to start his morning training.
The man moved like clockwork. He even had his money in hand as soon as he came through the door, and while he certainly liked to chat he didn’t linger around long.
Except when Hatake Kakashi was in.
As the owner of the little cafe, Kakashi had to make visits every once in a while. Make sure things were running smoothly, do some of the paperwork that he hadn’t assigned to Shikamaru, and just hang around. He usually picked the nice corner table in the far right of the place to hide away in, hidden behind his laptop working away.
He rarely talked to anyone unless necessary, but for some reason when those two were in the building together it always ended with an hour-long flirt session.
Shameless, embarrassing flirting that Shikamaru’s certain anyone else would be horrified to take part in.
“It’s none of our business.” Shino had said the first time Shikamaru complained. A statement he would usually agree with. The problem was that he was subjected to Maito Gai’s ear-shattering laugh every time Kakashi used a cheesy pickup line.
If that wasn’t bad enough, Kakashi had decided that today was perfect to waste away an hour flirting with Gai. Asking him about his training, listening to stories about the students he taught, and throwing in the odd terrible pickup line. On payday of all days.
“It’s not that bad, is it?” Tenten was in the middle of stocking the cups after their rush, her eyes glancing over the top of the counter towards Kakashi and Gai as they started their usual flirt session. “I mean, he’s way dorkier when he’s teaching. This is pretty timid for him.”
Some days Shikamaru felt bad for Tenten, and today was one of them.
“He taught you at one point?” He cringed at the thought. No doubt Tenten had been forced to power through lectures about ‘youth’ and ‘perseverance just to get her degree, and here she was. Working at a small coffee shop in the middle of their little town. “I hope it was worth it.”
“I mean, I survived,” there was a wounded note in her voice. As if the memories of those days were now bombarding her, reminding her just how bad it was. “You know what, now that I think about it...I’m so glad I’m done taking his classes. Still, he’s not bothering anyone, and if that’s Kakashi’s type I wish him luck.”
It was true. Ultimately it was none of their business and Shikamaru really didn’t care who his boss wanted to flirt with.
The only problem was that today was payday.
Kakashi was supposed to be calculating all of his staff’s hours and pay and then writing out the cheques he promised them before the end of the day so that they could get their money in time for the weekend. Shikamaru was the opening manager, and his shift only had two hours left to it, so if Kakashi got distracted for too long and didn’t finish the calculations in time he’d have to wait till tomorrow to get his paycheque.
Usually, it wouldn’t matter so much, but he had been saving for months to buy himself a beautiful new Shogi board for his apartment, and with this paycheque, he’d finally had enough. The shop had even agreed to hold onto it for him, and for once Shikamaru was actually excited to do something.
He wanted that Shogi board and Kakashi’s flirting would not prevent him from getting it.
“I can’t deal with this anymore.” Making his way around the counter, he lifted the small cupboard that separated him from the customers and stepped out from behind the counter.
Gai’s laughter filled the air at that moment, and for the first time in days, Shikamaru saw a smile crack across Kakashi’s face. A genuine, happy, smile.
Not the kind he plastered on his face in front of customers, or the strained grimace he had whenever he had to deal with literally anyone else trying to flirt with him when he was working. No, this was the kind of smile Kakashi only had when he was actually enjoying himself, and Shikamaru was about to barge in and ruin it.
He felt like a dick, but he wanted his pay. Kakashi could flirt with their customers any other day and Shikamaru wouldn’t even care. At the end of the day, it was just a drag. Something he really didn’t want to get mixed up in.
The need to get his paycheque and secure that beautiful shogi board he had been looking at for months was too strong though.
Taking a deep breath, he approached the table.
“Shikamaru,” Gai’s voice boomed, as cheerful as ever when he turned to face the morning manager. “Have you come to join our conversation?”
“Ya, no thanks,” the last thing he wanted to do was take part in whatever this was. “I don’t think the old man would like it if I interrupted flirting hours,” Kakashi shot him a dirty look. The kind that told him he’d be taking over Ino’s night shifts for a month if he kept it up. “I actually came here to try and convince the ol- the boss, to try and do his work.”
“Mah, are you worried about that?” resting his chin on top of his right hand, Kakashi sighed. “You know I’ll get it done. I’m not going to leave you all without pay. If I did that the whole store would revolt against me.”
That was true. No doubt Tenten and Ino would lead the revolt while Choji tried to get them to calm down. Shikamaru wouldn’t take part, but he’d certainly enjoy the chaos from the sidelines.
“What a drag,” dropping his shoulders, he turned his attention to Gai. If Kakashi couldn’t be reasoned with, Gai certainly could. “Look, if he doesn’t get to it he’s going to sit here flirting with you for two hours. At that point you’ll be late for the morning training you’re always talking about needing, and I’ll be walking out of here without my paycheque,” He’d have to wait a whole day to get his new Shogi bored, and he had waited long enough damn it.”You’ll be back tomorrow, and I’m sure I could convince him to come in for some paperwork,” there was always something to be done in the office, and any work Kakashi did meant just a little less for Shikamaru to waste his time on. “I’ll even give you your shake on the house.”
“Are you offering our customer a free drink just to leave?” Kakashi sounded like he was getting ready to scold him, but there was a proud look in his eyes. A look that Shikamaru had only ever seen the man give Yamato when he came rushing into the cafe one day to tell him that he had finally asked out his crush.
“No,” he was, but he didn’t need to admit it. “I’m offering our customer a free coffee so that he doesn’t have to pay anything to have a date with you tomorrow. I mean, he’s already going to be disappointed.”
He was spending too much time with Ino on his days off, and it was going to get him fired.
“I guess I should get back to work.” Glancing back down towards his laptop, Kakashi sighed. “It wouldn’t be fair of me not to pay you all, and I think there’s some paperwork I could do tomorrow if it meant coming in early to see Konoha’s hottest teacher.”
If Shikamaru could die on the spot he gladly would, just to escape this situation.
“In that case, I’ll see you tomorrow, Kakashi,” Giving Kakashi a playful wink, Gai turned his attention to Shikamaru. “I apologize for distracting him. I’ll definitely take you up on your offer tomorrow.”
With one more flashy smile, Gai was gone. Running through the door to start his morning training, leaving Kakashi alone at his table to hopefully get some work done.
“I leave in two hours,” turning his back to the older man, Shikamaru started to make his way back to the counter. “Try to have my cheque ready by then, would you?”
“Mah, I’ll think about it.”
Finding his way back behind the counter, Shikamaru sighed.
“Well, at least we’re getting paid today,” Tenten smiled when he glared her way. “If you need a break from all of the noise, you can head into the back to do some paperwork. I’ll call you if it gets busy and Shino’s not here.”
“Thanks,” making his way towards the manager’s office, he stopped just in front of the door and turned to look back at Tenten. “If you’re going to pull a Kakashi and start flirting with Shino as soon as he’s here, at least do me a favor and try to get some work done while you do it.”
The sound of Tenten sputtering followed him into the office, and just as the door swung closed behind him he felt something soft colliding with his back. When he looked down at his feet he was greeted with the sight of a takeaway cup. Something that definitely should not have gotten through the door as easily as it seemed to when it was already half-closed.
Of course, Tenten was known by all of the staff for her impeccable aim, so it came as no surprise to him that she had managed the shot.
Now, with the door shut and the noise of the cafe blocked off from his ears, Shikamaru could relax and pass by the rest of his shift peacefully. Without any more unnecessary interruptions.
One thing Shikamaru loved about his job was the paperwork. It was easy enough that he didn’t have to spend too much time on it, but it still gave him an escape from the hustle and bustle of the cafe.
Sometimes if he finished quick enough, he could even get lost in his thoughts. Come up with ideas for the things he’ll do when Choji got back to their apartment after his shift or new Shogi strategies he’d like to try out against his father during his next visit.
The second of which he was doing when his phone started to buzz on the desk. Alerting him to a text message that needed his attention.
Picking it up, he swiped it open and watched as the screen came to life, the most beautiful picture he had ever seen greeting him.
A cheque, with his name on it. All of the information was filled out except for the amount he was getting paid. Proof that he was going to get his paycheque before the end of the day.
Relaxing back against his chair, he closed his eyes and sighed, already thinking of where he was going to put his pretty new shogi board. It had to be somewhere his father would notice it as soon as he walked into his apartment.
Feeling his phone buzzing in his hand, he glanced back down at it. This time it was a text message from Tenten calling for his attention. If they weren’t in the middle of work he’d be willing to ignore it, but Tenten wasn’t one to use her phone on the floor unless it was something important.
“Don’t tell me you broke something,” he grumbled under his breath, swiping the message to the right and watching as it filled the screen. Capitalized words the first thing he noticed. “What the…”
Whatever he just sent you, do not believe him
Nothing good could possibly follow those words, but somehow Shikamaru hadn’t prepared himself for the picture that appeared in front of him seconds later. It was a simple picture really. Kakashi sitting at the same table he had been at all morning, with a new cup of coffee to replace the one he had finished before Shikamaru disappeared into the back, and another man sitting in the chair across from him.
A man Shikamaru recognized since he came to the coffee shop every morning on his way into work. Ibiki, the police detective who had made their little cafe his daily stop for morning, afternoon, and evening coffee.
Honestly, how the man still functioned with the amount of coffee he seemed to drink, Shikamaru would never know.
Right after the picture came another text. One that made Shikamaru’s blood boil as soon as he read it.
They’ve been sitting there chatting for ten minutes. He hasn’t touched his work since Ibiki showed up. He just started writing the cheques too.
He was going to commit murder. The plans were already starting to form in his mind, and he only cringed a little when the image of one of the coffee pots shattering over Kakashi’s head hit him.
Surely Ibiki would understand.
His paycheque was on the line, after all.
