My design process of Ornate Orbit The elaborate dahlia are symbols of devotion, love, beauty and poise. Dahlias are the national flower of Mexico and are the 14th anniversary flower! The monarch butterfly is the Queen of all butterflies! She is the Crowned Empress of energy, perseverance, mysticism, faith and transcendence. The monarch butterfly escorts us to the peak of our spiritual truth. She awakens our inner compass that directs us in the right direction. Monarch butterflies are the most evolved of all species due to their incredible migration from as far as Canada to breed and back to the warmth of Mexico to hibernate. This is why she symbolizes spiritual evolution and a cosmic connection. Aristotle declared the butterfly be renowned as Psyche. This is the Ancient Greek word for soul. There are many societies that consider the butterfly as the representation of a mortal soul. The butterfly is the Celtic Zodiac for those born between September 30th thru October 27th. Those born under this sign are said to be extremely social hence the phrase, “Social Butterfly”. They are known to have a joyful personality and a cheery disposition. They are intuitively empathetic, and people are drawn to their positive aura. Symmetry is another manifestation of the balance of Yin and Yang, of the unimpeded flow of ch'i. Ch’I is a river pristine energy, a power that not only flows through us, but unites our tangible self, our body, thoughts, emotions and sensations to our intangible, our spirit and consciousness. You might not notice, but a new life cycle is beginning in the garden. A monarch butterfly just laid an egg on a milkweed plant. This location was chosen for a reason: Milkweed leaves are the only food that monarch caterpillars eat. Here’s what a monarch egg looks like. 

The caterpillars have a big job to complete. Unlike other caterpillars that make a chrysalis, transform into butterflies and then die within weeks, monarchs are part of a yearly “super generation.” The monarch migration map (above) explains how these butterflies complete their annual journey...

The yearly count of monarch butterflies overwintering in Mexico continues to show a dramatic decline in this imperiled species. Recent counts of 2.10 hectares (5.2 acres) of occupied winter habitat is down 26%. The minimum population threshold needed to be out of the danger zone of extinction is six hectares.
