Late night wishful thinking but like

I think planting funky things around retention ponds should be more normalized!!

Like okay I get it retention ponds are meant to hold the runoff water from parking lots and drive throughs and the like so they aren’t exactly the cleanest water around. But like!!! Maybe this is different in other areas, but the only plants I ever see grow around retention ponds are cattails!! Which, like, are fine and great and dandy lets go cattails, but like

Where’s the whimsy?? Where are the flowers?? If I’ve got to see retention ponds whenever I go to a store or drive down the highway or pick up food for my mom, at least bring in some flowers!!

And it’ll benefit so much! A wider variety of plants can make it a more welcoming home to wildlife! Maybe the plants will filter some of the runoff stuff and the water can then be nicer for even more wildlife! Maybe the flowers can be a nice food source for butterflies and bees on their journeys and day trips!! And humans like seeing things be pretty!

Maybe its easier said than done! Maybe most places already do this and its just my city or state that doesn’t really I’d be willing to believe that! But lets get some color in these goddamn retention ponds!!

Swamp milkweed! Aquatic milkweed! Pickerelweed! Water lilies! Irises! Cardinalflower! Fuck it, put some goddamn duckweed in there!! Get some color in those things or so help me!!

Animal of the Day!

Parrot Crossbill (Loxia pytyopsittacus)

Conservation Status- Least Concern

Habitat- Europe; Russia

Size (Weight/Length)- 55 g; 17 cm

Diet- Tree seeds

Cool Facts- The parrot crossbill is one of the only birds to naturally have their top beak mandible cross over their lower one. Their beak helps them to feed on pine nuts without having to husk the entire pinecone. The crossbill inserts its lower mandible into the pinecone and presses up on the scale with its upper. This gives the bird time to grab the pine nut with their tongue before moving on to get the next seed. They’re essentially the squirrels of the bird world. Parrot crossbills have distinct sexual dimorphism with the males being bright red and the females being green or yellow.

Happy 50th Birthday, SNL!

It wasn't until I went down the Bill Hader rabbit hole in 2019 that I realized how much Saturday Night Live shaped the comedy I grew up with, comedy today, and pop culture in general. It's been on for 50 years but the first time I remember hearing about it was in university, through the Lonely Island song "Jizz In My Pants".

I didn't know Wayne's World, Coneheads, and Superstar were movie spin-offs to popular sketches on the show; that it catapulted Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, and Bill Murray to fame; that it's provided us Late Night hosts, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers; or that I have it to thank for Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig who would go on to create and star in some of my favorite female comedies: Mean Girls, 30 Rock, and Bridesmaids.

I don't know how well those 90s spin-offs have aged (probably not well⁠—even Superstar I couldn't get behind with then), but I feel the need to give tribute to the institution that has paved the way for some of the most original and fascinating comedies in recent years: Bill's Barry; Will Forte's MacGruber and The Last Man on Earth; Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph's Forever; John Mulaney's stand-up specials; Bill, Fred, and Seth's Documentary Now!; Jason Sudeikis' Ted Lasso, and The Lonely Island's Michael Bolton's Big, Sexy Valentine's Day Special — along with all the cool shit they're producing like Palm Springs and I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.
