DEAR EDUCATIONALLY NEGLECTED HOMESCHOOLERS
I’ve gathered some resources and tips and tricks on self-educating after educational neglect. This is only what I did and what I know helped me. I’m about to graduate college with honors after having no education past the age of 9. I wouldn’t be here without the following. Everything is free, and at/well above the standard for education in the US.
The holy grail: Khan Academy. Nearly every course you could take is available here, in order and by grade level. Their open-source free courses rival some of the college classes I’ve taken. This is your most solid resource.
For inattentive types: Crash Course offers a variety of courses that are snappy, entertaining, and extremely rewarding. They work for my ADHD brain. They also have college prep advice, which is essential if you’re looking to go to higher education with no classroom experience.
To catch up on your reading: There are certain books that you may have read had you gone to school that you’ve missed out on. This list is the most well-rounded and can fill you in on both children’s books and classic novels that are essential or at least extremely helpful to be familiar with. You can find a majority of these easily at a local library (and some for free in PDF form online low key). There are a few higher level classics in here that I’d highly recommend. If it doesn’t work for you, I’d always recommend asking your local librarian.
*BE AWARE* The book list I recommend suggests you read Harry Potter books, and given their transphobic author you may or may not want to read them. If you choose to, I’d highly recommend buying the books secondhand or borrowing from a library to avoid financially supporting a living author with dangerous and damaging views.
TEST, TEST, TEST: Again, Khan Academy is your go-to for this. I don’t personally like standardized testing, but going through SAT and ACT courses was the best way I found to really reveal my gaps so that I could supplement.
Finally: As much as you can, enjoy the process. Education can be thrilling and teach you so much about yourself, and help shape your view of the world. It can get frustrating, but I’d like to encourage you that everyone can learn. No pace is the perfect pace, and your learning style is the right learning style for you. In teaching yourself, be patient, be kind, and indulge in the subjects you really enjoy without neglecting others. You are your teacher. Give yourself what others chose not to.

Hi! So, I saw that your requests are closed so feel free to like ignore this for now and get to it later (or ignore it completely, of course) but I was just diagnosed with Hortons syndrome/ cluster headaches (also nicknamed “suicide headache” due to how painful it is) and sorry if I’m rambling but I’m feeling more than a bit sorry for myself and self pitying rn, so I just wanted to request your thoughts on how Tan (and possibly Pietro as well) would be in a situation like that, with processing the diagnosis and helping you through the headaches and all that stuff 🥺 just like being really comforting and supportive. And also with treatments bc those include giving yourself injections and I’m really bad with needles
hii angel!! don’t apologise for rambling, that sounds awful and im so sorry you’re going through that!! really do hope this can be of some comfort to you, sending my love and hope you’re doing well 💌
TANGERINE MEDICAL COMFORT.
I feel like he'd be very attentive throughout the whole thing — especially at the beginning when you're going to appointments and getting tests run. he knows how nerve-racking and scary it is, so he'd be sure to make you feel supported. he doesn't want you to think you're going through this alone
he does that thing where he holds one of your hands with both of his and holds it to his chin. he'd kiss the back of yours, kinda soothing and distracting you while you wait for your name to be called. or if your leg is jittering, he always places a hand over your knee, steadying you. also he plays with your fingers as another way to distract you while you're in the waiting room. I don't think he's one to talk a whole lot, and he's not sure what to say (he doesn't want to say the wrong thing) so he'd rely on touch to convey his feelings
when your name gets called he stands up as well. he wants to be there so assumes he can come in too, you'd really want him there, so you also assume he'd follow. when the doctor/ whoever is explaining, tan would listen for you in case things weren't setting in. he'd hold your hand, squeeze it, play with it, anything to comfort you while you're getting your diagnosis
maybe he's happy that it has a name and that you now have something to label the pain you've been feeling (medical validation really is validating) while he's also sad for you bc a diagnosis is also a super heavy, weighing feeling. the night you get your diagnosis he's online ordering a bunch of shit for you — a huge selection of cooling and heating creams, high thread count washcloths (also different fabrics to see what you prefer) thick blackout curtains, a new water cooling system to install somewhere discreetly (maybe to have in your room, but it's disguised as furniture) he'd be a little bit extra when ordering and buying everything
he knows you don't like needles so he doesn't want you to give your treatments to yourself (not if he can help anyway) so you'd be in the bathroom, and you'd be sat on the toilet seat lid, rambling to distract yourself as tan cleans his hands and preps the stuff. he says things like "don't look at it, look at me. see, there you go, it's easy. it's nothing. hey, why don't you tell me about that show you're watching, hm? it any good?" and "reckon you'll be good enough to do something later? can watch a film and get a takeaway? sound good?" and "there we go, almost done. right champ you are,"
he's so precious😻

Day Thirty-Five
Ninth grade English, math, and social studies classes are taught in the middle of the day- during Blocks 2 and 3, all freshmen are in one of those three classes, which are shorter than the rest (but year long instead of semester long) so they fit into that time frame. I like it a lot for Global Studies, and I like that it creates a block of time that can be used for ninth grade house things without disrupting the schedule for the rest of the student body.
Today that ninth grade house thing was state testing. Students reported to their first class of the block, then stayed with that teacher till lunch and took the reading and math NWEA tests. It's all online, so all I had to do as a teacher was set-up, assign the tests, un-freeze students' tests if they clicked through the answers too quickly. I'm young enough to be considered one of those "digital natives," and I proctored last year, too, so I wasn't fazed by any of it.
I did accidentally assign the Spanish version of the math test to one of my (very not Spanish-speaking) students. But I fixed it!
The student was very patient with that little mess-up, and, really, my whole class was great. I had to quiet them down once or twice, and remind them not to throw papers at my trash can (I say "at" because "into" is not guaranteed), but that's nothing major. They all finished before it was time for lunch, so they had a few minutes to relax and socialize, and I said I was super proud of them.
At lunch, I went down to the culinary class' cafe because they just opened for lunch. I got a delicious bacon, cheese, and tomato sandwhich and a cup of butternut squash bisque. It's way better than the lunch I'd packed (which will now be dinner), and gave me some fuel to finish showing my APGOV students how to write FRQs during Block 4.
We'd tackled three together last class, they were assigned three to try on their own for homework, and those are the ones we went over today. I had them share answers in small groups first, then we discussed as a whole class. After that, I reminded them of all the resources they have available for studying, and gave them the last twenty-five (ish) minutes to get ready for the test as they saw fit. Formal review will take place in class tomorrow.
I have a whole bunch of meetings tomorrow, including one during Block 1, so I stayed after for about half an hour to make all my copies and prep for my next classes. I ran into Mr. N as I was walking out, we chatted about how our days had gone, and about our memories of standardized tests. He's proctoring PSATs next week, which I barely remember taking; I do remember my SATs, though, because I had hiccups the entire time!
