Q is for Quaker, page for An Alphabet • William Nicholson, illustrator (British/English, 1872-1949 ) • William Heinemann, London, publisher • 1898 (first edition) • Lithographs of hand-coloured woodcuts
There were three issues of the first edition of William Nicholson's classic alphabet. The deluxe issue had "E is for Executioner" and "T is for Toper" but these were deemed improper for a wider audience and the two other issues (this one and the library issue) had "E is for Earl" and "T is for Trumpeter" instead. ~ Wikipedia

Antoni Pogorelsky, a contemporary of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, wrote several fairy tales for children. “The Little Black Hen”, one of his best, was composed for his ten-year-old nephew Alyosha. The book’s main character is a young boy also called Alyosha. In return for his kindness and help the fairy folk reveal their innermost secrets to him. But he must keep these secrets faithfully, or his magic gift will disappear… In this story fantasy alternates with an authentic account of life in the St. Petersburg boarding school where Alyosha lives and studies and where everything is strictly and harshly regulated. This is reality. And it is contrasted with make-believe. For the miraculous is close at hand-you need only tip-toe quietly through some dark, mysterious chambers to enter the radiant, colourful realm of fantasy …

Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874-1951) • Advertisement for Arrow collars and shirts (Cluett, Peabody & Co. Inc.) • c. 1918
"The Arrow Collar Man" was the name given to the trade character portrayed by various models. This particular model was Charles Beech, the long-time partner of J.C. Leyendecker. He modeled extensively for Leyendecker's ads in the early decades of the 20th century. Not exclusively for Arrow shirts but also for other products such as Interwoven socks and several covers of prominent magazines.

" Godfather Drosselmeier has told me of a lovely garden where there is a great lake, upon which beautiful swans swim about, with golden collars around their necks, and sing their sweetest songs. Then there comes a little girl out of the garden down along the lake, and coaxes the swans to the shore, and feeds them with sweet cake. "
