out lgbtq+ olympians!
this is my third attempt at this post. I am using the list compiled by outsports here. i highly encourage you to click through and read about each of these athletes.
below the cut is the list of the 182* out lgbtq+ athletes at the tokyo games. from the outsports list i have added some scheduling information -- if they've already competed, how they did, and if they are still competing/are yet to compete, when you can catch them. all times are US central daylight, because that's where I live.
representation in sport is SO important for lgbtq+ kids. allies, PLEASE make it a point to post about these athletes on your social media. making the olympic team is a HUGE accomplishment for anyone, and the social barriers that exist for most lgbtq+ athletes make it even MORE amazing.
Arranged by alphabetical order of sport. I have bolded the names of athletes who are still competing or will compete later in the Olympics. Athletes' names are italicized when they win a medal.

Do you have favourite threads? Do you have favourite ships?
Guilty As Charged- MUN EDITION
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will tell you I don’t play favorites, but I am merely human and thus subject to playing favorites constantly. I do have favorite threads, though they can come and go as threads tend to do. As for ships, I definitely have favorites. I just feel bad about naming them, sometimes, because I don’t want people to feel left out (also, they’re almost all m/m because I just don’t have enough women to work out a ship with organically).
A few of my favorites, right now, are:
Jaskier / Geralt
Jaskier / Tom Riddle
Jaskier / Valdo Marx
Jaskier / Saskia
Jaskier / Leonardo da Vinci

Note
for the random asks: when did you first start playing mass effect, and why?
OOh thank you my dear
My ex first introduced me too it and let me make a character (Saskia is as best as I could get to that original character). But as it was on his account and he was determined to play what he wanted and not let me play stuff I never really got to play it again.
After that ended (thankfully) I met my current bf who showed me DA Origins, and when I said I liked it showed me Bioware’s other Ip,  Mass Effect (a big mistake =P). I’d forgotten who good the game was and I became obsessed with the characters, story and just the feel of it. But what really kept me going was the creation of Saskia back in the first year of my Masters.l
Tumblr media
I put everything into her, she holds a little bit of my soul. Saskia is everything I ever wanted to be: brave, strong, clever, beautiful, powerful, over 5ft =P And so much more.

Amazing Halloween Movies According To Rotten Tomatoes
Halloween is a fun festival for all age groups. It is that time of year when one has the chance to dress up as their favorite character; it can be scary or any other character. And one can watch their favorite movies and hang out with friends. Many horror movies are perfect for watching in the Halloween season. This article will try to list some best horror movies and rank them according to the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
Tumblr media
The Loved Ones in 2012 (rating 98%)
The Loved Ones is an Australian horror movie directed and written by Sean Byrne. It stars Xavier Samuel, Victoria Thaine, Jessica McNamee, John Brumpton, Robin McLeavy, and Richard Wilson. The plot of the story starts with a high school boy, Brent, driving with his father. And suddenly, an injured man filled with blood appears in front of the car to avoid him; their car crashes into a tree causing his father’s death. The story grows, and it revolves around a teenager (played by Samuel), who is in the center of his classmate’s (played by McLeavy) party and declines her offer to go for a school dance with her in favor of his girlfriend for prom, the situation starts to take a wrong turn.
The Loved Ones is the first feature film of director Sean Byrne. The film is shot under the Ambience Entertainment production in Melbourne, Victoria. The Australian Classification Board gave it a rating of R18+ due to the sadistic aspect and impact of violence on the audience.
The Vanishing (Spoorloos) in 1988 (rating 98%)
The Vanishing is a Dutch thriller movie directed by George Sluizer. The story is an adaptation of the novel The Golden Egg in 1984, written by author Tim Krabbe. The plot starts with a young Dutch couple, Saskia and Rex, on their vacation in France. Saskia shared a dream of drifting through space in a golden egg, and she feels the collision of two eggs, which signify the end of something. They stop at a rest area as they are running out of petrol. Saskia goes to the petrol station to buy some drinks, but she does not return. The screenplay then further follows Rex obsessively searching for his girlfriend after the disappearance at a rest area. The Vanishing received an approval rate of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 46 reviews, with an average rating of 8.4/10. The movie is known for its unique film structure, which is interesting for filmmaking in general.
Eyes Without A Face in 1960 (rating 98%)
Eyes Without A Face is a French horror movie originally titled Les Yeux sans directed and co-written by Georges Franju. It stars Alida Valli and Pierre Brasseur. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by author Jean Redon. The movie revolves around a plastic surgeon named Brasseur, who performed a face transplant on his daughter. His daughter’s face was disfigured in an accident. The film received an American debut and dubbed form in 1962 under the title of The Horror Chamber of Dr. Faustus. Eyes Without A Face has not received positive reviews from critics. Although, according to modern critics, the film has a poetic nature that influences other filmmakers.
Let The Right One In in 2008 (rating 98%)
Let the Right One In is a Swedish romantic horror movie titled initially as Lat den Ratte directed by Tomas Alfredson. The movie is based on the novel of the same name written by author John Ajvide Lindqvist, who is also the film’s screenplay writer, published in 2004. The screenplay plot follows a 12-year-old bullied boy who developed a friendship with a vampire child in Blackberg set in the early 1980s. Filmmaker Alfredson decided to tone down many elements and focuses more on the relationship between the two characters and explores humanity’s darker side.
Let the Right One In is critically acclaimed and has won several awards, including Best European Fantastic Feature Film in European Fantastic Film Festival Federation in 2008, Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature in Tribeca Film Festival, four Guldbagge Awards from the Swedish Film Institute and the Saturn Awards for Best International Film. The film got an approval rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 8.29/10. Additionally, the movie scored an average of 82 out of 100 based on 30 reviewers on Metacritic.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Das Cabinet Des Dr. Caligari) in 1920 (rating 100%)
The Cabinet of Dr. Cagliari is a German silent horror movie titled initially, as Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, written by Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz, and directed by Robert Wiene. The story is about an insane hypnotist played by Werner Krauss, who uses a somnambulist (sleepwalking) on a man played by Conrad Veidt to commit murders. The movie features a twisted and dark visual style, with oblique, curving lines and structure, landscapes that are twisted in unusual angles. It was widely received and accepted by critics and was a commercial hit. Modern film critics paused it as a revolutionary movie and tilted it as “the first true horror film.”
The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari is a uniquely directed movie; it uses silence as the theme’s advantage and creates a groundwork for cult films and future horror movies.
These are some of the best horror movies to spend your Halloween with family and friends. I hope you enjoyed the article.

hurting because solas never wanted a body and never wanted to fight "he never wanted a body but she asked him to come", "he wants to give wisdom not orders" but he did it anyway. "i pulled you from the fade you loved and sent you into war. i used your wisdom as a weapon… and it broke you." inquisition forced him to slow down and just be himself. "solas, bright and sad, observes and accepts. spirit self, seeing the soul, solas, but somehow sorrows." lavellan nourished that. seeked out his wisdom. his purpose in the world. never twisted him, loving him as he was. she craddled the part of himself he wants to be in her palms. the part that was beaten and bruised and abused a millennia ago.

Florence travel guide: Where to eat, stay and shop in Firenze
Florence is inarguably an exquisite medieval marvel housing genuine world wonders. It also runs an impressing sideline in high-end fashion boutiques, restaurants and bars to rival many full-blown capital cities. Yet, Firenze can also resemble an elaborate, ancient and empty shell, which suddenly fills with a tide of tourismo, only to empty just as swiftly. Depending on the season, these will display a predilection for cutoff denim shorts worn tight and selfie sticks wielded like light sabers, just not in an exciting way.
In marked contrast, men’s fashion seasons happen but twice a year, June and January, and the more sophisticated attendees’ objective is to steal through this marvellous city (and you really must walk everywhere) swerving the tourist hordes. Crossover is inevitable, but carefully chosen destinations and haunts will deliver a less denim clad-experience.
Where to stay
JK Place Firenze
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JK Place is a modest-scale guest residence with grand ideas about luxury, comfort and style. Set on the edge of the restored Piazza di Santa Maria Novella, with a lavish terrace planted directly onto the pavement (complete with cashmere blankets they offer to night drinkers), inside it’s all sumptuous lounges, chic saloons and opulent nooks. JK is billed as contemporary style but this level of extravagant care hails from a previous age of being spoilt rotten. There’s even a private dining room with butler service, for heaven’s sake. But then the service is exemplary, as is all food and drink that goes with it. The decoration is wonderful and the immaculate white upholstered bar and sofas arranged by large fireplaces would make an ideal location for a vintage Agatha Christie novel/film. Each of the 20 rooms designed my Michael Bonan are different and the additional four master bedrooms have their own fireplaces and big baths affording even bigger views.

Gallery Hotel Art
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having attended a few fashion presentations here I’ve become fond of this stylish four-star, conceived by a local architect and hidden neatly away with its own courtyard right near the Arno. It’s super clean, uncluttered and modern, offering comfortable style with some great views over the city and river. As the name suggests, the Gallery Hotel is proud of its own art and photographic library and updates its exhibits and collection regularly. It’s very reasonable considering how well thought-out and centrally located it is and for a few dinari more one can gain access to one of a couple of lovely balcony rooms.

Where to eat
Cibreo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The devastatingly charming trio of Cibreo establishments are one of my favourite scenes in the whole of urban Italy. I love the restaurant, but the gorgeous café and trattoria are also in touching distance of the intersection at Via dei Macci and bang opposite Teatro de Sale. The elegance of the beautiful wood-panelled Cibreo restaurant is my fave though. The main event, along with the food, is the family and staff who work the place with hearty Tuscan joy. Cooking with the rhythm of the seasons is their thing, dedicated to working with the only current produce, from vibrantly painted artichoke salad master-classes to the savoury mousy-jelly small dishes that are house specialities. Oh, and dining outside here is one of the most glamorous, romantic things I’ve ever done.
cibreo.com
Caffè degli Artigiani
The adorable Caffè degli Artigiani, on the acutely angled corner of Via dello Sprone, is agonisingly Instagramable inside and out, but do try and resist as you’ll spoil its utterly authentic vibe. It’s a proper restaurant all day and night long, but it’s the breakfasts here that knock it out of the park for me: an A-list pastry and dolce scene with a killer good coffee roster. (Visit later and occasionally weird folky bands and singers turn up, so do google them up if you fancy a bit of turbo folk.)
Da Gherardo Factor in a pizza at this tiny spot, even if you’ve got limited time. Like the best places anywhere, you can barely spot it from the outside, but inside it’s as rustic, rugged and Tuscan as cutting meat up with a sword and putting it straight on a hot-loaf – which they don’t actually do. They do, however, serve thick, doughy pizzas with new combinations as well as old-school classics.

Where to drink
Although it’s totes-clichéd, do check Harry’s Bar on the flank of the Arno overlooking the Pont de Vecchio. Giving it a quick whirl is fine, as is drinking a Bellini (Harry’s invented it) on the terrace. But for me a visit is more worthy for the pageant of coral (not actually peach) table cloths/napkins upstairs, than the sticky Bellini it serves. You’re better off heading for…
Il Santino
This wine bar on Via di Santo Spirito is actually an excellent restaurant, but it’s fine to rock up without a reservation. With a cool atmosphere and credible crowd, it also boasts singularly excellent wine.
ilsantobevitore.com
L’appartamento L’partmento is an arts and creative collective base a couple of floors up in an old apartment building not far from Duomo. A surprising large space oscillates between a sprawling cosy bohemian living room, a theatre stage or set for musical productions. These various elements are served by a great little kitchen and bar, with a rebel, niche, almost activist vibes. The place is only accessible through the residential front door, so scan online what is on and if the doors are open. The decidedly non-fashion crowd are an excellent foil to the style tribes for me, so please do not tell anyone about this venue as you will surely spoil it.
appartmentofirenze.org
Gurdulù
On Via delle Caldaie, near the Bobli gardens, this is a must-visit venue bar, specifically for cocktails, but the decor alone is so worth the walk. So tasteful and knowing, it brings a new accent to Florentine interior style, right down to the glassware. Cocktails are suitably cultured for this city, including my personal preferences, the Pisco Sour and Florence 66.

Where to shop
Gucci Garden
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Opened in 2017, this is an essential stop for Gucci devotees and even for those just peckish for some stylish heritage: a grand old building on the Piazza della Signoroa, it’s now a museum of vintage Gucci pieces, as well as a repository for current collections alongside unique items, curiosities, stationery and interiors, decoration and myriad other accessories. There’s a Michelin-starred osteria and frequently changing exhibitions and a devout tribe of old guard and trendy young Gucci acolytes to enjoy, so don’t miss.
gucci.com
Saskia Wittmer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In shoemaking terms, I rate Saskia’s artisan skills and her eye for a unique patina and hue particularly highly. Her vibrant whole-cut shoes and delicate chic penny loafer styles are a win, but for shoe fans Wittmer’s studio is well worth a visit for its creative, witty installations and mood alone. She makes all shoes entirely by hand and can be found working on almost avant-garde colour schemes, realised within graceful informed classic lines.
saskiascarpesumisura.com
Don’t miss
Teatro del Sale
While you’re at the Cibreo end of town, see if you can at least get a walk around the enchanting Teatro del Sale, on Via dei Macci. A cosy theatre with its own bar and living rooms, it regularly stages plays and concerts.
Alternatively, Florence’s city limits present fabulous terrain for runners and to stride out early morning, criss-crossing the postcard bridges, is blissful, offering awe-inspiring views along the wide, flat River Arno. The more intrepid can then veer upward toward the hills, seeking the sheer steps and views of the Basilica San Miniato and pagan-like cemetery or the preened chocolate-box Bobli gardens. The climb takes the edge off all that pasta and Barolo at least…

Valve Index, Masters of the Universe & Crew Dragon
The Nerds are back, proving that 107 episodes just isn't too much for the human body to handle.
This week, the Professor has a complaint about that saintly game developer, Valve. What's his problem with Gabe and the multi award winning game studio? They're sold out of VR headsets with only a month to go before the release of Half Life: Alyx.
The Masters of the Universe are coming back as well. The Professor has another complaint, this time about the casting of Skeletor. He thinks it's ridiculous to bring back Skeletor's original voice in a different role and cast a new actor for Skeletor. Even if that actor is the esteemed Mark Hamill. DJ thinks this sacrilege is 100% ok. The star studded cast list has the Nerds highly excited for this revival.
Now that Dragon has been human rated, SpaceX have moved the capsule to the launch pad, and the crew are a pair of former Shuttle pilots. This will be the first manned space mission from the US since the Shuttle program was shut down. America Can Into Space? Soon, hopefully.
Professor and DJ have some trouble pronouncing American Indian and Finnish words in the Remembrances and Shoutouts, and laugh at the Boomers who couldn't believe Bill and Ted actually speak like that.
Stay hydrated and come hang out with us again next week.

From 1850 to 1886, Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache bands — the Tchihende, the Tsokanende and the Nednhi — to carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo's raids and related combat actions were a part of the prolonged period of the Apache–United States conflict, which started with American settlement in Apache lands following the end of the war with Mexico in 1848. During Geronimo's final period of conflict from 1876 to 1886, he "surrendered" three times and accepted life on the Apache reservations in Arizona. Reservation life was confining to the free-moving Apache people, and they resented restrictions on their customary way of life. He was a superb leader in raiding and warfare, he frequently led large numbers of men beyond his own following. At any one time, he would be in command of about 30 to 50 Apaches. He died from pneumonia at the age of 79 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
17 February 2017 – Alan Aldridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Aldridge
British artist, graphic designer and illustrator. He is best known for his psychedelic artwork made for books and record covers by The Beatles and The Who. He designed a series of science fiction book covers for Penguin Books. He made a big impression with his illustrations for The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics book. He also provided illustrations for The Penguin Book of Comics, a history of British and American comic art. His work was characterised by a flowing, cartoony style and soft airbrushing – very much in step with the psychedelic styles of the times. His work includes the 1971 anti-war poster entitled A great place for hamburgers but who'd want to live there! Aldridge also created the artwork for Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy by Elton John in 1975. He also the creator of the Hard Rock Café logo. He died at the age of 78 in Los Angeles, California.
18 February 2019 – Toni Myers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toni_Myers
Canadian film editor, writer, director, and producer, best known for her 3D IMAX work. Ms. Myers’s half-century in filmmaking included credits as writer, producer, narrator and editor as well as director. Much of that work involved documentaries that made use of Imax technology, which, with a bigger screen and enhanced sound, creates a more vivid viewing experience than a conventional movie offers. Ms. Myers directed three feature-length Imax films: “Space Station 3D” (2002), about the construction and occupation of the International Space Station; “Hubble 3D” (2010), which documented a 2009 shuttle flight to repair the Hubble telescope; and “A Beautiful Planet” (2016), which concentrated on images of Earth shot from space. All had marquee narrators — Tom Cruise for the first, Leonardo DiCaprio for the second, Jennifer Lawrence for the last. She explained in a 2010 interview with The Gazette of Montreal, “The sun rises and sets every 90 minutes in space, which means there wasn’t much time to capture the shots we asked them to get,”. She also said “There was no time or room to say: ‘Could you move to the right? It would make a better shot,’”.  She died from cancer at the age of 76 in Toronto.

Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson, was an Australian bush poet, journalist and author. He wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas, including the district around Binalong,New South Wales, where he spent much of his childhood. Paterson's more notable poems include "Clancy of the Overflow" (1889), "The Man from Snowy River" (1890) and "Waltzing Matilda" (1895), regarded widely as Australia's unofficial national anthem. He was born in "Narrambla", near Orange, New South Wales.

Originally conceived as a dowdy Moonee Ponds housewife who caricatured Australian suburban complacency and insularity, Dame Edna Everage has evolved over four decades to become a satire of stardom – a gaudily dressed, acid-tongued, egomaniacal, internationally fêted Housewife "Gigastar".  He was born in Kew, Melbourne, Victoria.

17 February 1864 – H.L Hunley sunk a ship
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_USS_Housatonic
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._L._Hunley_(submarine)#Attack_on_Housatonic
H.L. Hunley or Hunley made her only attack against an enemy target on the night of February 17, 1864. The target was the USS Housatonic, a 1,240 long tons (1,260 t) wooden-hulled steam-powered sloop-of-war with 12 large cannons, which was stationed at the entrance to Charleston, about 5 miles (8.0 kilometres) offshore. Desperate to break the naval blockade of the city, Lieutenant George E. Dixon and a crew of seven volunteers successfully attacked Housatonic, ramming Hunley's only spar torpedo against the enemy's hull. The torpedo was detonated, sending Housatonic to the bottom in five minutes, along with five of her crewmen. Hunley did not survive the attack and sank, taking with her all eight members of her third crew, and was lost.  The Sinking of USS Housatonic on 17 February 1864 during the American Civil War was an important turning point in naval warfare. H.L. Hunley became renowned as the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy vessel in combat, and was the direct progenitor of what would eventually become international submarine warfare, although the victory was Pyrrhic and short-lived, since the submarine did not survive the attack and was lost with all eight Confederate crewmen.
17 February 1984 – Krull makes its way into theatres in Finland - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krull_(film)
The film was released under Krull ja näkymätön vihollinen or Krull and the invisible enemy. Directed by Peter Yates, the feature starred Ken Marshall and Lysette Anthony, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com:  "A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet." Krull underwent a very expensive, harsh, and dangerous production process. The film's huge budget ballooned, mainly due to the designers having to make numerous alterations to the sets corresponding to the heavily evolving script. The film was a commercial failure upon release, and critical opinion has been mixed, both upon release and in retrospect. Numerous reviewers have highlighted its visual effects and soundtrack, while several critics have criticized its plot as being derivative and nonsensical. The film has gone on to achieve cult film status.
17 February 1989 – Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure came into theatres. -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_%26_Ted%27s_Excellent_Adventure#Release
The flick premiered on this day in 1989, and it still enjoys a cult audience today ... so much so that a third installment is said to be in-the-works. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure received generally positive reviews, and was a success at the box office, grossing $40.5 million against a $6.5 million budget. The picture had been planned for a 1988 release, and filming and production had completed on schedule. However, the original film distributor, DEG, fell into significant debt in late 1987, and by 1988 had filed for bankruptcy. At this point, the film was in post-production, and the director Stephen Henek attempted to show around the rough cut to other distributors. Henek said many of these companies were confused, asking him "Are there kids that really speak like this?" on seeing the film. However, the cut had an extremely popular reaction from a test audience of volunteers pulled from local malls, which led to a small bidding war from production companies to get the title.
