Ayurvedic Support for Urinary Tract Infections
In our body, the channel carrying urine is known as mutra vaha srotas. The starting point of the channel begins at the kidneys, the bladder works as a container, the ureters works like passageways, and the end or the opening is the urethra. Bladder infections (cystitis), kidney infection, and inflammation of the urethra (urethritis) are all more general in women than in men. This is most likely as women have a shorter urethra making transmission of bacteria from the anus or vagina easier to go into ureters. Urinary tract infections or UTIs are infections that take place within the urinary tract, commonly with the urethra or bladder, causing symptoms of burning during urination, frequent urination with a small quantity of urine, and also feeling a frequent urge to pass urine. There can be strong-smelling urine also sometimes with blood. As believed by Ayurveda, UTIs are because of any kind of imbalance within pitta dosha. There is a urine infection treatment in ayurveda. Ayurveda's knowledge offers guidelines to balance Pitta dosha and support the urinary tract in order to avoid recurring infections. Foremost factors that aggravate pitta dosha and contribute to UTIs are:
Consuming foods that are too hot, sour, or spicy Intake of alcohol Suppressing the need to urinate Consistently retaining urine in the bladder for long periods of time Long time in contact with extreme heat, and overexposure to sunlight Emotions of impatience, anger, jealousy Environmental factors like working with fire, chemicals, or toxic fumes Not drinking a sufficient amount of water
Diet
A big part of urine infection treatment in Ayurveda is the diet. Ayurveda suggests choosing a diet that will pacify pitta dosha to help purify and remove the toxins that are bringing extra heat to the body. For more knowledge, watch our resource on a pitta pacifying diet. Be sure to drink sufficient amount of water to help flush bacteria out of the urinary tract. Pure cranberry or pomegranate juice is the best purifying drinks that reduce excess pitta moreover reduce the proliferation of bacteria. The following foods have an adverse result on the bladder and they should be limited or avoided: alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, processed foods, coffee, and refined sugars.
Yoga
Do yoga poses that target the kidney and abdominal areas such as Cobra (Bhjangasana), Bow (Dhanurasna) and Bridge (Setu Bhanda Sarvagasana) pose. These really help to massage and tone the kidneys as well as improve the function of genito-urinary organs. Pranayama Sheetali is a breathing exercise or cooling pranayama that is useful in reducing excess heat in the body. Sheetali also helps dispel emotions of frustration and anger. It is a practice that brings tranquillity with satisfaction to the mind.
Sit at ease, with spine long and in alignment. Curl the sides of the tongue up in order that they touch each other. Lock the lips around the tongue, forming a circle. Begin to slowing breathe in air through the "straw" which is the tongue. At the top of the breathing, let loose the tongue and close the mouth. Breathe out through the nose. Continue this for up to 10 rounds of inhalation. Sit calmly and see the cooling effect of this pranayama.
Ayurveda offers the healing tools of self-care - diet, herbs, lifestyle, yoga, and pranayama to maintain a healthy urinary tract and bring balance to the body. It’s time to avail the benefits of urine infection treatment in ayurveda.
