"Fugitives Go Shopping In Village Dodge Police In 'Pea Soup' Mist," Toronto Star. October 28, 1943. Page 33. --- Special to The Star Guelph, Oct. 28 - Rifle shots rang out in Morriston village last night. Four escaped inmates of the Guelph Reformatory were playing a game of hide and seek with provincial police and guards in a "pea soup" mist. Dense bushland and large swamp areas hindered the posse.
Residents of Morriston last night reported that the men were walking up and down the main street talking with children and making chases in one of the village stores. At high speed, police headed into the village from all directions; systematically combed every house and backyard in the rain and mist.
The inmates had tried to steal a car but couldn't get it started.
Provincial Constable Philip Seibert, of Guelph, heard running footsteps in the mist. He fired in the direction of the sounds and gave chase, but in vain.
The swamp area was quickly surrounded and police stood guard all night, intending to make a concentrated search in daylight.
The escaped prisoners are Norman Pringle, 20, Oshawa; George Whitefoot, 17; and Lyle Banks, 18, Sarnia; and Lawrence Johnson, 19, Windsor. Two are in army uniform, stolen from the prison laundry.

I got to go to Sarnia yesterday, and I took a few pictures. The Lawrence House is a lumber baron mansion built in 1892. It's now an arts centre. I think my favorite part is the cresting. "Windsor Man, 3 Others Slug Guard, Flee Prison," Windsor Star. October 27, 1943. Page 3. ---- Johnson In Jailbreak At Guelph ---- Reformatory Attendant Beaten on Head With Hammer; Quartet Seizes Clothing ---- Four prisoners at the Ontario Reformatory at Guelph escaped today after slugging a guard with a hammer.
The four were: Norman Pringle, 20, Oshawa: George Whitefoot, 17, Sarnia: Lyle W. Banks, 18, Sarnia: and Lawrence William Johnson, 21, Sandwich West, who once escaped from Windsor police and was later captured.
TAKEN TO HOSPITAL
The guard, John Nevin, was taken to reformatory hospital for treatment of head injuries.
The escape was made from the reformatory laundry where Nevin had taken the prisoners. Five others in his charge made no attempt to escape.
Nevin took a party of nine men to the laundry to start their day's work. There four of the younger men attacked him, and one hit him over the head with the hammer, knocking him unconscious.
The other five men in the party apparently had no part in the attack. The guard was removed to the reformatory hospital and regained consciousness later.
SNATCH CLOTHING On their way through the laundry the men snatched up clothing which they later donned, it was indicated in reports reaching police. Two army battle dress uniforms and two civilian suits were missing from the laundry. One was a zoot suit and one brown with a green stripe.
Four men, dressed in this type of clothing were seen later at the farm of Earl Carter, at Arkell, near Guelph. Carter was in the milk house when he saw the four men dash into his stable. He went to look for them, but they had disappeared through a rear door.
Later J. Fitton of Arkell, driver of a milk truck, saw the four at the nearby intersection of Victoria road and Arkell road. Two were wearing army uniforms and two were in civilian dress, he reported.
Police took up the search in the Kitchener area after reports that two soldiers and two civilians were seen hitch-hiking in that direction. All roads leading from Guelph to Kitchener and Hamilton were blocked by officers.
PLEADED GUILTY Johnson, whose home is listed as 499 Victoria road. Sandwich West. pleaded guilty in Windsor city police court May 6 to stealing 700 gasoline ration books and to escaping police custody, and was sentenced a week later by Magistrate J. A. Hanrahan to 12 months on the first charge and six months on the second, the terms to run consecutively.
The theft of the gasoline ration books was made on April 10 from the office of the Walkerville Automobile Licence Bureau, 382 Devonshire road. Johnson was arrested two days later in Toronto and returned to Windsor April 13 to face a charge of theft of the books.
As he neared the Windsor police station in custody of Detective James Hill, Johnson bolted and escaped. He was recaptured May 5 at Dresden. brought back to Windsor, tried and sentenced.
DESCRIPTION GIVEN He is five feet nine inches tall. weighs about 155 pounds. He is a medium-skinned colored man, of quiet disposition. Police here believe that Johnson. whom they term easily led, is not likely to have been the ringleader in the prison break.
Pringle was sentenced by military court martial at Camp Borden to two years: Whitefoot was sentenced last March at Sarnia to nine months definite for violation of suspended sentence, and Banks at Sarnia to 12 months definite for auto theft last March.

Chris Molyneaux Jazz Trio Captivates The Audience At Sarnia’s Lawrence House
It was no surprise that the Chris Molyneaux Jazz Trio show at the Lawrence House in Sarnia last Friday (Nov. 16) was an excellent one. That it was sold out wasn’t a surprise either. After seeing the trio play three times over the last several months and watching them captivate audiences the fact that they were going to be good was a given. Their combination of musicianship and stage smarts insures it’s always a treat to observe them doing it though. The three musicians are all exceptional on their own. Bassist Wesley Collett-Taylor reads and reacts to what his bandmates do then builds foundations under their work that he enriches with tasteful nuggets of ornamentation. Mark Athanasiadis is an amazingly economical drummer. Or at least it seems that way until his playing is heard. Then it sounds like someone is doing a lot back there. Both sentiments are accurate. There are times his playing is very elaborate but he never wastes a motion doing it. Chris Molyneaux is a pure expressionist. Whether it’s with the saxophone, which is his instrument of choice, or the clarinet, nothing comes through without shadings to provide emotional colour and atmosphere. Literally everything he does serves the songs. Together, they’re something. Chris is like a boxer who feints, responds with and then resumes his stance when he reacts to cues or unexpected changes. The same facet is in Mark’s playing. Both are autistic, which may, or may not be a factor; it’s been suggested that a different part of the brain is in use. That could be a factor. Whatever the case, it’s incredible to watch. Wesley reads with an overview of what his bandmates are doing and then ties it together. Those roles aren’t clearly defined though. All three are virtuosos in addition to being natural collaborators. When one steps up the other two provide support. That roles often change unexpectedly adds to the excitement. The no-frills approach they take toward stagecraft makes it easy to miss how adeptly they orchestrate the dynamics of their sets. Each of the two they played was presented as a complete show. ’Billie’s Bounce’ by Charlie Parker was familiar and upbeat, perfect for inviting audiences in. ‘All Of Me’ was slightly more introspective but still welcoming. Both songs were presented with very short introductions to avoid compromising the flow of energy created by the music. An original number (‘Up For Grabs’ from their CD) was played before going back to familiar ground with ‘My One And Only Love’ by John Coltrane. More original material followed before closing the set on a high note with Herbie Hancock’s ‘Cantaloupe Island’. The second set they played followed a similar path. They aren’t just great musicians. They know how to present the music to its best advantage. The original material from their new CD, ‘Closer To Home’, was superb. ‘Up For Grabs’ literally announced that something special was happening. ‘Begin Again’ started with a bit of grey and atmospheric bowing from the bass before the sax came through amidst languid washes from the cymbals. ‘Restoration’ was filled with life and the joy of pulling out of an abyss. ’Someone’s Husband’, the lone composition by Taylor. sparkled with the humour it was written with. They weren’t quite perfect. The expression Chris has in his singing was good but not quite as relaxed as what shone through in his playing. That’ll will come with more experience though and it’s small enough to be less than a minute blemish on what they did. Each show I watch them play has a way of becoming the best performance seen in recent memory and this fell right into step. The show opened with the first movement of Mozart’s well known ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’ and followed with a less familiar Concerto for two flutes and piano by Vivaldi. After that it went through less familiar but still very accessible territory that included both the Baroque and Romantic periods. The Celtic set that followed had names that (probably) only dedicated players have committed to memory but which resonated with the audience as if they were old friends. It was a delight. The same held true for the second set. With the exception of Ed Sheeran and Irving Berlin the names of most of the composers weren’t known well. The same was true for Johann Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D’. Along with ’Perfect’ it was one of the few titles that was recognizable instantly. The music however, which featured excerpts from ‘West Side Story’ early on, struck familiar chords just as the reason for combining Sheeran’s ‘Perfect with the ‘Canon’ became wonderfully clear. The arrangements the trio used were filled with drama, humour and pathos, and diverse in ways that allowed plenty of call and response between the musicians. The individual parts were played off the page or adapted depending on what the group had to work with. The result was a feeling of spontaneity that gave each chances for individual expression while conjuring up the sense of urgency that kept the audience rooted. Highlights in a program that was virtually all high points included the second movement from the Vivaldi Concerto, several of the passages from Ethel Smythe’s ‘Interlinked French Melodies’, the intertwining of ‘Perfect’ and the ‘Canon’, the entire sequence of Celtic pieces and all of Tessa Catton’s introductions of the musical numbers. With her devastating wit the intros she provided entertained and educated without cutting into the energy generated by the music. Picking a star from among these three is impossible. Because they’re standing and up front violinist Caitlin Mason and flautist Tessa Catton seemed more obvious at first but the lovely passages from coming Dan Sonier at the piano drew attention to what he was playing regularly. As soon as one settled into focusing there however their attention would be drawn elsewhere. Sometimes it would be to a sweeping passage from Mason’s violin, while other segments drew the eye to lilting notes coming from Catton’s flute. Other instances would pull the eye and ear into the collective. It was that kind of show. The nature of the Lawrence House itself the intimacy created by the musicians. No amplification was needed when performers were playing or speaking and the instrumental sounds carried beautifully. The sight lines weren’t perfect but that was more than compensated by the intimacy and the venue afforded. That the performers were relaxed there just added to what was already sublime. It’s not entirely easy to play there. Crowds that attend Lawrence House Concerts are there to listen and the room insures that golden moments (or gaffes), whichever happens will be heard with stunning clarity. That’s a two sided street though. When musicians are confident enough to take some risks as these three did the results are bursts of spontaneous wizardry that can exist only in those singular moments. Caitlin, Dan and Tessa conjured an amazing number of those instances during this show and it connected in every area that mattered.
