The way you alchemize a soulless world into a sacred world is by treating everyone as if they are sacred until the sacred in them remembers.

This is the fourth in our occasional series featuring luminaries of stage and screen with a strong personal and/or professional connection with Northeast England, inspired with thanks by @robbielewis. Previous profiles were of Jean Heywood, John Nightingale and Edward Wilson. This time, Sunderland born actor siblings Malcolm and Catherine Terris.
Malcolm Terris was born on January 11th, 1941, boarded at Barnard Castle School in County Durham, then worked as a cadet journalist at the Sunderland Echo before training as an actor.
He was active on British television from 1963, his style perfectly suited to larger than life characters, and is possibly best remembered for his role as Great War veteran and salt-of the-earth union leader, Matt Headley, in 34 episodes of the Tyneside interwar social-realism drama, When the Boat Comes In.
Tumblr media
As Matt Headley, with James Bolam (Jack Ford) in When the Boat Comes In.
His more than 120 recorded screen credits include a variety of British television programmes, including Fall of Eagles, Doctor Who (Horns of Nimon, 1979), Reilly: Ace of Spies, three separate roles in Coronation Street, Our Friends in the North, The Bill, and a regular role in Rockliffe’s Babies. His final appearance was in Midsomer Murders in 2011.
His big screen appearances include as ship’s surgeon, with Anthony Hopkins as Bligh and Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian, in The Bounty (1984), with Ricky Tomlinson in Mike Bassett: England Manager, and in Dickie Attenborough’s Chaplin, which starred Robert Downey Jnr in the title role. He has also appeared on stage including in productions of Othello and in a Broadway production of Hamlet.
He passed away at the artistes residential care home, Denville Hall, on June 6th, 2020, aged 79.
Catherine Terris was born in 1948, and trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). She has been active in British television since 1972, appearing with her brother in seven episodes of When the Boat Comes In. Her other television work includes Z Cars, two roles in Coronation Street, Anna Karenina, Inspector Morse, Dalziel and Pascoe, Heartbeat, George Gently, and a regular role (15 episodes) in William and Mary with Martin Clunes and Julie Graham. She also appeared in the hugely successful feature film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
According to her page on the Coronation Street fan site, Corriepedia:
"...On stage she has appeared in productions of Faustus, A Rite Kwik Metal Tata, Andy Capp, Tight at the Back, Rose, Tom Jones, Billy Liar, Queuing for Everest and Into the Blue..."
Her most recent television screen credit is In the Club (BBC 2014-16) and latest big screen appearance was in the 2021 feature film, Martyrs Lane.

Sofia, October 2022
Last winter I started reading about 20 minutes a day. Often I did 20 minutes of studying and another 20 of leisure.
That's my reading list of the past months:
- Thich Nhat Hanh, Silence
- Nan Shephard, The Living Mountain
- Marc Andrus, Brothers in the Beloved Community
- Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Gambler
- Susan Anderson, The Journey from Abandonment to Healing
- John O'Donohue, Anam Ċara
- Lalah Delia, Vibrate Higher Daily
- Sarah Durham Wilson, Maiden to Mother
- Jack Kornfield, A Path with Heart
Currently I am enjoying to read the heartwarming Big Love by Adele Hulse, full of vibrant stories taking place in the Himalayas and packed with wisdom and compassion.

Rolling Stone Magazine Top 200 Singers - The Omissions List
Once in awhile, I’ll do a music themed blog post and boy do I have a post for you. Rolling Stone Magazine opens 2023 with a list that no one asked for. Their 200 Singers list is an all time low for the once flourishing magazine. When you include auto-tuned singers like Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Lana Del Ray and dull as dishwater singers (again, my opinion) like Morrissey, Courtney Love, Michael Stipe, Bono, Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder, you lose credibility in my book. Here are the singers of different backgrounds, genres, and vocalizations (in alphabetical order) that Rolling Stone failed to include on their inept list:

1820 Nov., Sun. 26
9 10/60
12 40/60
[sideways in margin] V [Miss Vallance] a good deal better this morning than yesterday. I think her kiss last night did her good –
V [Miss Vallance] received me before breakfast without her usual fetches at self reproach and repentance. She seems now reconciled to admit my embraces and attentions quitely –
All went to morning church. Mr. Simpson preached 25 minutes from psalm 119 verse 71, “It is good to be afflicted” – Good plain discipline.
Walked with Miss V– [Vallance] an hour in the low garden. Talked about poor Mr. N[orcliffe]’s g[a]ieties. V [Miss Vallance] finding I knew them, mentioned Mrs. N[orcliffe]’s trouble about his mistress and the three children he left by her. Miss Marsh told me of [this] some time ago and about a girl who wrote the other day, from the north near Durham, saying she was Mr. N[orcliffe]’s daughter.
It seems V [Miss Vallance] was a good deal in his confidence. I said I had fancied he admired her and was more tender in his regard than he would have been to many others. She declared that, tho most kind, he was always most respectful in his manners to her and had never in his life attempted to give her a kiss –
The girls know of this woman and her children. Charlotte makes no allowances for Mrs. N[orcliffe], but thro thick and thin defends her father. Mrs. N[orcliffe] it seems consults V [Miss Vallance] or at least tell[s] her everything –
Came upstairs and wrote the above of today and yesterday. Burnett came in and interrupted me a long while by telling me the tales Mrs. Smith told of δ [Charles Lawton] and 𝝅 [Pi - Mariana]. I find she mentioned all about Sarah and consulting me of the business, in consequence of which I had never been at Lawton since. I made many allowances and defended him successfully at the same time, partly allowing there was some truth in the story of her consulting me – After all, I defend δ [Charles Lawton] as if I was one of the dearest friends he had –
Mr. Brooke, the attorney of York, came on business and dined and staid all night – Miss V– [Vallance} came upstairs before tea. Very unwell with her cough, but on the whole not quite so bad yesterday – Sat with her most of the evening.
Tib staid with her till I undressed, all but curling, and I had then three quarters [hour] alone with her. Got into bed for the last quarter and in spite of her languidly saying she was too weak to bear me, had a very good kiss, and had just got out of bed and settled before Tib came –
In the morning a very affectionate letter from M– [Mariana] (Lawton) Fine day – tho’ a little drizzling sent in Miss V [Vallance} and me from the garden a little after 2 –
[Psalm 119:71]

He was lieutenant-colonel of the York Volunteers. He married Ann, the only daughter and heiress of William Wilson, Esq., of Allerton Gledhow, and had by her three sons and four daughters. The two younger sons, William and Thomas died in youth, and three of the daughters, Isabella, Charlotte, and Emily, died unmarried. Mary, the third daughter, married Charles Best, M.D., of York, and her daughter, Rosamond, eventually succeeded to the estate.
The eldest son, Norcliffe Norcliffe, Esq., was major-general in the army, and succeeded to the estate in 1820. He married Decima Hester Beatrix, daughter of John Robinson Foulis, Esq., and had by her an only son, who predeceased his father unmarried. General Norcliffe died in 1862, and the estate passed to his niece Rosamond, elder daughter of his sister, Mary Norcliffe Best.
