I love darkly atmospheric #circusbooks and #carnivalbooks! So much so, that in my upcoming #yafantasy, #Mystiquiel, there's a #creepy #carnival that plays a role in my MC's adventure within a world of #goblins and #faeries. However, the carnival is a small part of the story. I do have a couple of ideas for #circus-themed novels somewhere down the road, where the entire story will take place inside a magical setting of dangerous games, cryptic riddles, and menacing performers. 🖤 🎪 However, out of the books pictured here, the wonderfully magical #Caraval is the only title I've had a chance to read so far. I have a #beautiful hardback of #TheNightCircus on my shelf but it’s difficult for me to read hard copies due to my daily routine of tending house and the business of writing. My only chance is at night when I snuggle under the covers on my kindle while my husband's asleep. So, unless it’s loaded onto my e-reader, I have to wait for vacation time. 😂 🖤 🤡 Although they’re not pictured, “Water for Elephants” by #SaraGruen and “The Museum of Extraordinary Things” by #AliceHoffman were two of my favorite (albeit heartbreaking) literary circus/carnival reads back in 2011 and 2013. And I've recently added another interesting one to my TBR called "The Circus at the End of the Sea" by Lori Snyder (it launches from Harper Collins in fall 2021 so there's no cover yet). It’s such a cool title and I can’t wait to see what it’s all about! 🖤 ✨ Have you read any of the books in this post? "PAGINE DI CIRCO" per sfogliare lo spettacolo più bello del mondo

In giorni di quarantena o comunque di permanenza forzata tra le mure domestiche, abbiamo modi alternativi per coltivare la passione per il circo. Scovando video storici o godendoci spettacoli nelle dirette Facebook, mettendo su il dvd di un film, cercando trasmissioni televisive sul passato, dedicandoci ai biglietti e alle locandine delle eventuali collezioni, alla filatelia circense oppure leggendo un libro. Gli scaffali delle librerie sono colmi di libri sul circo: romanzi ambientati all’ombra dello chapiteau, volumi monografici, manuali di pedagogia circense, libri di storia del circo, biografie, autobiografie, etc... C’è un mondo da scoprire rispetto ai libri sul circo. E’ vero che in Italia la produzione libraria a tema circo è meno vivace rispetto ad altri paesi europei, come la Francia per esempio, dove il mercato è molto più ricco e ampio. Ma è anche vero, come ci insegna la fornitissima bancarella di libri curata con passione e competenza dall’amico Filippo Riminucci, che vi sono tantissimi volumi di cui non sempre veniamo a conoscenza. Alcuni perché magari stampati in proprio senza passare da una casa editrice, altri perché molto specifici o settoriali. Di tutto questo e molto altro tratteremo in questa sezione intitolata “Pagine di circo” che apriamo con una serie di segnalazioni curate da Francesco Farnè, conosciuto come Kirkos, da sempre appassionato di circo e vorace divoratore di libri sul circo. Da qui in poi questo spazio parlerà, a più voci, di libri e circo, del passato, del presente, delle prossime uscite in libreria, eventuali e-book e tutto quanto afferisce all'editoria circense, italiana e non solo... Buona lettura!

Una delle attività in cui si può impiegare il proprio tempo stando a casa è sicuramente la lettura, specialmente di qualcosa che ci interessi e appassioni: nel nostro caso ho pensato di proporvi alcuni libri a tema Circo! Non mi soffermo sugli innumerevoli testi o manuali tecnici, saggi e ricerche storiche, libri fotografici (ecc.), ma vorrei concentrare l'attenzione sui romanzi: ne esistono a decine, dei generi più svariati. Gialli, sentimentali, storici, fantasy… In alcuni l'intreccio si svolge all'interno dell'ambiente circense, in altri esso fa solo da sfondo alle vicende narrate. Alcuni sono di pura fantasia, altri si ispirano a fatti veri, altri una via di mezzo, inquadrati in un contesto storico specifico e caratterizzati dall'effettiva conoscenza del mondo del circo da parte dell'autore. Vorrei condividerne alcuni fra quelli, tuttora in commercio, che ho trovato più appassionanti (su oltre sessanta letti finora). Gary Jennings "Nomadi" Avvincente avventura di un circo americano e dei suoi artisti in tour tra nuovo e vecchio continente nella seconda metà dell'800. Non spaventi la lunghezza: la lettura è molto avvincente, scorrevole e appassionante! Non è la classica storiella romanzata e inventata su quello che potrebbe essere la vita in un circo: l'autore dimostra di essersi documentato a fondo sia sulla storia del circo, sia sulla geografia, inserendoli nel contesto storico-politico-sociale di allora. Il paziente lavoro di ricerca da parte dell'autore è riassunto nei ringraziamenti in fondo al libro, rivolti alle maggiori istituzioni e personalità del mondo del circo a livello mondiale frequentati e coinvolti dall'autore stesso prima della stesura del libro, quindi indicativamente negli anni intorno al 1985 (fra gli italiani sono citati in particolare i componenti del Circo Rinaldo Orfei, fra cui l'amico Adriano Zambelli).

Sara Gruen "Acqua agli elefanti" La trama è già nota ai più, in quanto da esso è tratto il recente film "Come l'acqua per gli elefanti", molto fedele al libro.

Erin Morgenstern "Il circo della notte" Genere fantastico, ambientazione onirica e magica. Trovo possa dare alcuni spunti e idee di ambientazione per spettacoli futuri...

Barbara Ewing "Il circo fantasma" Sebbene il titolo italiano sia a mio parere infelice (e il disegno di copertina orrendo e completamente fuorviante), la trama è interessante e movimentata, ambientata in America sullo sfondo di fatti storici reali (tra cui anche le vicende narrate nel film "Gangs of New York").

Ingeborg Prior "Il clown e la cavallerizza" Ispirato alla storia vera di una ragazza ebrea nascosta e salvata in un circo itinerante ai tempi del nazismo.

Roberto Bianchin "Ultima turné" Gli ospiti di una casa di riposo per anziani rimettono in piedi uno spettacolo, gustando nuovamente l'ebbrezza di una tournée, con alcuni inevitabili imprevisti e colpi di scena.

The continuing tale of my favorite #womenwriters for #womenshistorymonth continues with WATER FOR ELEPHANTS by Sara Gruen. True facts, I bought this book to read before I saw the movie, which I was seeing because I had a thing for Robert Pattinson. (Christoph Waltz is also brilliant in it.) It really is one of the best book-to-movie adaptations I've seen and the book itself is amazing. Totally transports the reader to the circuses of the day 1930s in the very best way. (And Gruen mentions my hometown in passing!)
