Favorite Americana and Roots Albums of 2023
It's that time of year again when publications drag out their annual Best Of 2023 lists. Here at Concerthopper Album Review Central, we love these as they always give us something new to listen to and put on our Christmas list. But, as with every year, we avoid the “Best” label on our list in favor of “Favorite.” This is simply because, even keeping ourselves limited to Americana albums, there are just too many released every week for us to ever hear them all. Here's hoping you find something new to grab at your local indie record store to stuff in those stockings! Where we reviewed the album, we have included a link. Where not, we've included a YouTube video of a highlight song from the album.
10. Cidny Bullens- Little Pieces One of the best things about music is its ability to give you a chance to understand the experiences of a demographic not your own. In the case of Cidny Bullens, Little Pieces offers an opportunity to walk in the shoes of a transgender man, both the struggles and joys. It's all wrapped in a mix of power pop and roots music that'll keep your toes tapping.
9. The Arcadian Wild- Welcome Is it Americana? Folk? Jazz? Chamber Pop? You'll ask yourself those questions throughout your first couple of listens of Welcome. After that, you'll decide you don't care. Whatever genre you place them in, The Arcadian Wild has delivered a fun album of intelligent tunes that challenge listeners in the best way possible at every turn.
8. Whitney Rose- Rosie After an illness hospitalized her and prevented her from touring in 2023, Whitney Rose poured that pain into her latest studio effort, Rosie. The result is an album that flawlessly blends classic country and '60s pop (think Skeeter Davis) in a way that is a natural maturation from her last album, 2020's We Still Go to Rodeos.
7. Hello June- Artifacts A major step forward for Hello June. Primary songwriter Sara Rudy proves her album title is apt as she digs deep into her own experiences for an intensely first-person album of highly literary lyrics. From a dying love (“Faded Blue”) to a dying parent (“Interstate”) to an ode to her newborn nephew (“Sometimes”) to a stellar cover of John Denver's “Country Roads (Take Me Home)”, there's plenty to recommend here.
6. Parker Millsap- The Wilderness Within You Parker Millsap, already one of Americana's most willing explorers, just keeps expanding his boundaries on The Wilderness Within You. The album, often a musing on stepping away from the electronics addiction to reconnect with people, surprises with its technological flourishes, pulling from New Wave and Krautrock on songs like “So Far Apart.”
5. Doolin'- Circus Boy It's not often you hear the term “French Celtic Supergroup.” But that's Doolin' for you. However, on Circus Boy, the band expands beyond its Celtic roots into Folk Pop (“The Darkest Way”), Americana (“Circus Boy”), French pop (“L'amour Sorcier”), and Calypso (a cover of Harry Belafonte's hit “Man Smart, Woman Smarter”). The result is one of the most fun albums on this list.
4. Dom Flemons- Traveling Wildfire Dom Flemons is Roots Music's most dedicated historian. He began (alongside Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson) his work of unearthing the almost-forgotten history of black string band music with Carolina Chocolate Drops and has continued to do so with his solo records for Smithsonian Folkways. But Traveling Wildfire also shows off Flemons' love of traditional country, from the ambling waltz of “Slow Dance With You” to the Marty Robbins-esque western story song “It's Cold Inside” alongside his historical remembrances like “Nobody Wrote It Down.”
3. Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway- City of Gold Wanderlust is the loose theme of City of Gold, the new album from Molly Tuttle's bluegrass project Golden Highway. Co-written almost entirely with Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor, Tuttle, and her stellar all-star band blast through a set of tales about gold rush pioneers (“El Dorado”), a road trip between two lovers trying to mend a widening gap (“Yosemite”, featuring guest vocals from Dave Matthews), and a lament for the loss of the wild and crazy festival fans who have given way to selfie-snapping scenesters (“Where Did All the Wild Things Go?”)
2. Cinder Well- Cadence While it's not the #1 album of the year so far, it's a near thing. No album bowled me over like Cadence in the first half of 2023. I was familiar with Amelia Baker's “doom folk” project from her excellent previous album No Summer, but nothing prepared me for the dark explorations of the “thin places” in our reality where magic, not always positive, happens. Songs like “Two Heads, Grey Mare” and “Gone the Holding” practically drip with the Old Ways of Baker's home on Ireland's coast. 1. Jason Isbell- Weathervanes One of these days, Jason Isbell is going to release an album that's “just” really good. This isn't that year and, like every other release year since I've been doing Album of the Year lists, he comes out on top. Backed up by The 400 Unit, who just continue to make the case that they're this generation's Heartbreakers, Isbell continues to write fully fleshed-out characters in four-minute rhymes. There's the opioid-addicted protagonist of the standout song “King of Oklahoma,” the girl coping with the fact that her racist town “won't get no better, will it?” on “Cast Iron Skillet, a man breaking down about how to raise his child in a world where schools get shot up every other day on “Save the World,” and so much more. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are the kings of rock and roll right now and they don't look interested in surrendering the throne anytime soon.

On the Waverider
The legends are playing a card game
In the background:
Malcolm *whispering*: We have to be quiet. Follow my lead. *sneaks past the door expertly*
Ketch *follows quiet and swift*
Slade *sneaks past on his toetips, but his armor is a little to heavy*
Mick: *from inside the other room* I saw you cheating, Trenchcoat One!*
Constantine: You saw nothing!
The legion freezes. After a moment, Rowena sneaks past, on her toetips, doing a really bad job and is only lucky because Constantine sets Ray´s cards on fire
Ray: Hey!
Ketch and Malcolm: look away exaggeradly
Cas: I don´t understand this game.
Sara: That´s because it doesn´t work that way.
Darhk * basically walks past the room normally*
Malcolm: *screams silently*
Rowena: *in a almost normal voice* I could have just walked?!
Malcolm argues with Darhk silently
Thawne: *running past the room at full speed, red lighting illuminating the otherwise dark hall, whispering* Did you find the lance of Michael?
Mick *jumping on his feet and pointing his heat gun*: Who of you punks did that?!
Ketch *in a normal voice*: Why are we even trying?
Malcolm: *silently screams louder*

Familiar Faces - Jack Kline Imagine (Supernatural/DC's Legends of Tomorrow Crossover)
Tumblr media
Title: Familiar Faces
Pairing: Jack Kline X Platonic!Reader, Nora Darhk X Platonic!Reader
Requested: nope
Word Count: 1,255 words
Warning(s): bit of cussing, mentions of kidnapping (Arrow spoiler), threats of violence
Summary: (Season 13 in Supernatural, Season 5 (I think) of Legends) In the hopes of saving Jack and Mary, (Y/n) joins Dean and Ketch in the apocalypse world. However, after the mission takes a bit of a left turn, they try to get home, only for (Y/n) get thrown somewhere completely different.
Author's Note: I wrote a post about this on my fan account as a joke, but it felt like a good break from the serious imagines that I just uploaded.
---------------------------------
I don't think anything was as messy as the time that Team Free Will spent hopping around alternate dimensions.
It seemed like a simple enough task, considering everything. Get the portal open, get into the apocalypse world, get Jack and Mary, and then, get the hell out of there and slam the door shut.
Of course... nothing could ever be that simple.
As Dean, Ketch, and I ran back to the portal, I had a bit of difficulty keeping up. We had been running and fighting constantly and it was finally catching up with me. My clothes and skin had dirt all over and I was far too sweaty.
"(Y/n), let's go," Dean glanced back at me.
"Focus on not running into a tree," I shouted back at him.
We made it back to the portal with barely enough time.
The two of them ran in without any problems. However, when I went to run through, I was sent flying backward. I felt my back hit the ground hard and roll backward for a moment. I stopped myself with my hands.
I hadn't landed on the forest floor like I was expecting, I had landed on this metal material. I looked up to see a group of people staring at me from around a table. I quickly stood up, staring back at them. Then, I caught sight of someone very familiar.
"Kelly," I asked.
She furrowed her eyebrows, "Who?"
"You're not Kelly?"
"Who the hell is Kelly?"
"More importantly, who are you," a blonde woman on the opposite side of the table asked.
"And why are you so dirty," a tall man with brown hair asked.
I looked down at my clothes.
"I'd answer the questions before we throw you in one of the cells on board," another blonde woman added.
"I will," I promised. "However, your story is probably far less complicated. Maybe a few names.... and the name of where I am?"
"I'm Sara," the first woman replied before pointing at each person around the table. "That's Ava, Ray, Nate, Zari, Charlie, Mick, John, and Nora. You are on a ship called the Waverider."
"A ship? Doesn't quite feel like we're on water?"
"Time ship," Ray corrected. He had said maybe a total of eight words, and I could already tell he was the human equivalent of a puppy.
"Oh," I nodded. I took a few steps toward the table. I was standing in between Ray and Nora. "Well, my name is (Y/n)."
"Hello, (Y/n)," Mick said, reminiscent of an A.A meeting.
"Alright," I muttered. "I am from a different universe."
"God, not again," Nate groaned.
"Tell me about it," I replied. "I'd give anything to be done with this portal nonsense. Anyway! I am a monster hunter. I have been for most of my life. I work with two men named Sam and Dean, and an angel named Castiel. We had... a complicated situation take place."
"All ears," Nora pushed.
"Well, that's kind of where you come in," I explained. "There's a woman on my earth who looks just like you. Except, her name is Kelly Kline. Kelly was manipulated by Lucifer... and it was our fault he was free in the place. He manipulated her and she ended up pregnant. She died in childbirth. I was there when it happened. I promised to watch her kid."
The table was silent.
"Their name's Jack," I grinned a little. "They're a Nephilim. Half archangel, half human. They're incredibly powerful. Their birth ripped a hole in space and opened a portal to an apocalyptic world when Lucifer and Michael fought and when Michael when, he started wiping out the humans. Sam and Dean's mom got dragged over. Jack thought that in order to make things right, they should find her."
"The... baby," Ray asked. I froze.
"That's another complicated part," I replied. "I'll explain that in a minute. Anyway, Jack ended up stuck. Dean and I managed to open a portal and tried to find them. Ended up trying to save someone else. When we went to make it back to our world, the portal... glitched? And then, I was thrown in your ship."
"The other me gave birth to the antichrist," Nora asked.
"Jack's a complete puppy dog," I said. "They're nothing like their dad. They don't call Lucifer that. To them, their dad is Castiel."
"How would the baby call him anything," Ray seemed very stressed about this.
"Jack... didn't... they didn't come out a baby," I tried to explain.
Before I could properly explain, there was some kind of intercom that came on.
"Ms. Lance, there's a new presence on the ship and it's coming toward you all," it said.
"What the hell-"
"It's just Gideon," Ray whispered to me.
"(Y/n)," I looked over as Jack walked into the room. They looked at everyone else and waved, "Hello."
"Jack," I shouted, running over and hugging them. I stepped back and looked for any visible wounds. "How did you get here? How did you get out of the apocalypse world? Are you hurt? Where are Sam and Dean? Is Mary alright? How long have I been gone?"
"Everyone's okay," Jack said. "And it's only been a day. We got another portal open so we could find you."
I let out a sigh of relief.
I turned around to introduce them and saw Nora looking absolutely terrified.
"You... This is Jack," she asked quietly.
I nodded.
"The other me gave birth to them," she continued. I nodded again. "I don't know if there's really a God, but I'd love to give them a swift kick in the nuts."
I furrowed my eyebrows.
"They... They looks like the man who killed my mother," she explained.
"Oh," I whispered.
"His name was Lonnie," she continued. "He was angry with my dad. Kidnapped me and my mom twice and killed her. He tried to kill me."
The entire ship was tense.
"I understand you're not him... but it's... scary. I won't lie."
Jack stepped forward slowly, "I'm sorry that I scared you."
"It's... it's not your fault," she shook her head. "Umm... (Y/n) told us about your dad. My dad was kind of known for being evil. I understand what that can be like."
"I'm trying to be better than him," Jack replied happily.
Nora grinned at them a little, "Good."
"Jack," I asked. They looked back at me. "Ready to head home?"
They nodded before looking back at Nora, "Can I give you a hug?"
She just kind of stared at them for a minute before slowly stepping forward and giving them an awkward hug. They were happy with it, hugging her back. She smiled wider, relaxing a little bit.
When they stepped back, they walked over to me quickly, "Come on!"
They started walking back to the portal. I chuckled at their excitement and turned to the group, "It was nice meeting you all!"
"You too," Ray said excitedly. The others waved to me right before I turned around and jogged to catch up with Jack.
We stood next to each other next to the portal. I grabbed their hand and dragged them through the portal.
"There they are," I let out a laugh when Dean yanked me into a tight hug. "You alright?"
"I'm fine," I stepped back and looked at the crowd in the room. "Oh. Wow. There's a lot of you."
"Where'd you end up," Sam asked from the front of the crowd.
"Oh... I've got a bit of a story..."
---------------------------------
Author's Note: I would love some art of Ray absolutely stressing out about this baby. Thank you for reading this very silly imagine.

📚 Backstory 📚
Anton Satan was the result of a twisted campaign by several Satanists to provide the titular Satan with a son and bring forth the Antichrist - this was known as the Blackheart Project and was in effective a Satanic eugenics-style mating experiment in which they bred the worst of humanity over and over in order to ultimately create a being of pure evil: within "Kid Blackheart" are the genes of countless rapists, murderers and cannibals, as well as other criminal elements of society, making him the "perfect" vessel for the Antichrist itself.
When Zadkiel claimed the throne of Heaven, he tried to kill Anton, so the prophesy of the Armageddon would not be realized.
Leaving the church he went to Wall Street, working in Gourmandize Brothers Holding Inc.. In two weeks, he grew through the ranks to an executive position, as all his supervisors committed suicide, and was congratulated by the C.E.O., Mortimer J. Gourmandize.
There, he was saved from Zadkiel's assassins by Jaine Cutter. The two met up with Daimon Hellstrom, the "son of Satan". During the fight with Zadkiel's agents, Anton fled but was found instants later by Danny Ketch and brought to Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider, Sara the Caretaker, Jaine and Hellstrom, along with a plan.
Anton agreed to lead the group to a gateway to Hell to deliver him to his 'father' and learn where they could find a portal to Heaven, as the rest of the group fought Zadkiel agents, Anton revealed that Sara was a living portal to Heaven. Restraining her, Anton also revealed that he planned to invade heaven with an army of demons he would summon from the portal in Master Pandemonium's chest. Though the invasion was a failure, Anton and Pandemonium escaped.
He was later present at a visio-conference Hellfire Club meeting where Kade Kilgore presented his Hellfire Academy's Hellions in order to frighten any potential rivals to his rule over the Club.

Now that Michael's disappeared with Dean and his body... what will the others do? How will they react - knowing their beloved friend has been taken from them?
Here's how.
Jody finds out from Sam. She’s at the stove, stirring a pot of beef stew from a recipe she saw on television. In the other room, Donna captures the girls’ attention with a daring tale from their latest hunt. Ever since she had transferred over to Sioux Falls, Jody and her have been moonlighting more often as a hunting duo. Patience and Alex listen intently, books wayward from their laps. Claire pretends to focus on the television, but her snarky comments betrayed her indifference.
“Dinner’s almost ready, gang!” Jody calls, turning the flame from high to simmer, “Donna you can finish it in here, let’s go!” There’re grumbles, but the shuffling footsteps bring a smile to her face.
She only notices her phone when she reaches for a bowl. Its notification light flashes, and she raises a brow at it. With most of the people she talks to in the dining room, there’re only one or two other people who can be calling.
“Wonder if they found the devil…” she mutters, opening the phone up and reading the text.
           CRACK!
           “Jody!”
She looks up, Claire leading the pack, pausing at the entryway. Her phone lies forgotten on the floor, a small spider web working its way up the corner of the screen.
“De – Dean…” she mutters, leaning against the counter.
“What happened?” Claire asks, “Jody – is Dean okay?”
Jody looks at them – at all of them, and can’t stop the tears brimming to the surface. “He’s been possessed… and he’s… he’s gone.”
Donna gasps. Patience and Alex whimper, hands finding one another. Claire, however, has a different reaction. She grits her teeth, steels her gaze, and steps towards Jody until she’s pulling the mother figure into a tight hug.
“He’s not gone,” she says, whispering harsh and wet, “We’ll find him. That’s what family is for.” Jody clings to Claire, re-centering herself with the help of the younger hunter. The others follow, surrounding their matriarch.
‘Beef stew’s better for lunch anyway…’ Jody thinks, food forgotten for the night.
Rowena also finds out from Sam. Her and Charlie are on the side of the road, staring at a smoking yellow beetle. The younger redhead is under the hood, while the witchier of the two waits under a black umbrella.
“Honestly, dear, why did you insist on taking this horrid vehicle?” she asks, pulling her sunglasses from her face.
“Because, Rowena,” Charlie starts, glaring at her while elbow-deep in engine guts, “It’s got soul. Reminded me of the car I had beforeangels screwed up my world.” It sputters once more, hacking grease and oil up on Charlie’s shirt. “Dammit!” she curses, “I just bought this shirt too!”
“I told you to change,” Rowena calls out, “Although I won’t be shedding a tear over the ridiculous shirt you bought.”
“Carrie Fischer is a treasure!” Charlie yells, “May she ret in peace!”
Rowena wants to fire off another round of sass, but Annie Lennox’s ‘I’ve Put a Spell on You’ cuts her off. “Already?” she asks, pulling out the offending device from her purse, “We only just bloody left. What could they possibly…”
Charlie tries to focus on fixing her bug’s engine. But the longer Rowena keeps silent, the more worried she gets. Finally fed up with trying (and failing) to put together the machine, she looks back over to Rowena.
           A shaking, crying Rowena.
“Hey… hey!” Charlie rushes over, “What happened?”
She reaches out to touch her, only for the witch to pull back, “Don’t touch me with those grease-covered mitts, nerd.”
Charlie rolls her eyes, “Who was it? What did they say?”
“It was Samuel,” she starts, fiddling with her phone, “He said… Lucifer – he’s… he’s gone…”
           “That’s good right?”
“Oh it is, dearie, but…” she hiccups, “Dean…”
Charlie’s heart drops to her stomach. Even only knowing that something happened to the elder Winchester sends a chill up her spine. He was so sweet – albeit a little overprotective. Looked at her like the Charlie from his world. And even though they had just met, wishes that he’d share that look with her more often – but only because of the bond they built together.
           “What happened?” she whispers.
“Michael,” Rowena admits, “He’s possessed by the Michael from your world.” Charlie gasps, biting down on her lip until water wells up at the corner of her eyes.
When she reaches out to hug Rowena, the latter doesn’t care for how mussed she’ll look later. She hugs the other girl back, rocking back and forth until a kind stranger helps them towards the nearest gas station.
Ketch finds out from Rowena. He’s relaxing in a booth at a roadside diner, a cup of stale coffee cooling nearby. In his hands, a wrinkled newspaper with marks over different sections and articles.
A young waitress sidles over to him, her brunette hair pinned back into a messy bun. There are a few stains on her mustard-and-ketchup uniform, and the once shiny nametag that says ‘Sara’ has seen better days. “Are you ready to order, sir?” she asks him.
He folds the newspaper over and meets her bored stare. “I’ll have some eggs, bacon and toast, love. Scarmbled. Burnt. And butter. Thank you.” Sara rolls her eyes, but moves on to put the order in.
“Let’s see…” he mutters, flipping to the next page, “This might be interesting.” He pulls his phone out now, placing the older medium off to the wayside. Typing in a few key words, he pulls up another article that checks off a few more tabs.
“Thought we wiped all you bloodsuckers out ages ago,” he hums, “But here we are.”
He’s about to close out when a notification flashes above. Ketch sees Rowena’s name and frowns. After having her insert the resurrection spell back into his leg, they parted ways with the hope of never seeing the other again.
But she’s messaging him, telling him that Dean…
           “Bloody hell.”
Ketch bolts from his booth, storming out the door. Sara calls after him, “Sir… sir! Your food and –“ the bell clangs –“my tip… British… I thought they had manners.”
The former Men of Letters rushes over to his bike, his vision blurring with rage. He stops at the handlebars, leaning against them, shuddering for breath. He’s staring into a tunnel, and his gut twists itself into knots he hasn’t seen since his Academy days.
“You stupid… block-headed… American!” He kicks the wheel, sending his bike to the ground. Ketch curls up next to it, taking a few seconds to control his temper.
Soon enough, he’s picking the bike up and peeling out of the near-empty parking lot.
On his mind: the route back to Lebanon.
Billie walks the halls of her library. She plucks a book out from its place and opens it to a certain page.
“Damn,” she whispers, “Out of all the paths… why’d he have to follow this one?”
She carries it back to her desk, Jessica watching with fear.
None of the reapers, including Billie, are sure what will happen next.
Naomi watches Heaven blare in and out. Flagstaff flies in with the other angels quickly on her heels.
“Naomi?” she asks, “What is happening?”
“Lucifer,” Naomi tells them, “He’s dead.”
“Dead? But…” the angels look between them, “What does that mean of Heaven?”
“We still may have hope… there’s one other archangel left on Earth.”
           “Gabriel?”
           “No… Michael.”
           Mary finds out from Cas.
She and Bobby re-emerge from the Bunker’s innards, surprised by the eerie silence within their home’s halls. They’re on high alert, with Mary steeling herself for whatever she might find. Even if that means her boys’…
‘No,’ she thinks, ‘We’re not going there.’
What they do find in the main room, however, is not what they expected. Michael’s vessel lies unmoving near the map of the world. On the steps, Cas sits frozen – like a statue, curled in on itself.
“Cas?” Mary asks, stepping forward, “Castiel? What happened? Where’s…”
           He doesn’t respond.
“Castiel?” she urges, kneeling right behind him, “Sam and Dean… I need to know.”
“He’s… he’s gone,” Cas says, eyes distant – searching.
“Who’s gone?” Mary pleads now, hand on his shoulder, “Castiel, please –“
“C’mon now, boy,” Bobby interrupts, “Answer her!”
“Dean he… he said…” he chokes back a sob, “He said yes.”
Sam and Jack find Mary curled against Bobby, weeping openly against his chest. The two shuffle their way in, nearing them. Sam quickly joins the two hunters, where Mary latches onto him, squeezing him tight. “Why?” she asks, “Why did he – why would he?”
“To save us,” Sam tells her, swaying with her, “To save us all.”
Jack sits next to Cas, the angel unmoved by their entrance. “Father?” Jack asks, “Father, are you okay?”
He says nothing, but twin wet trails tell Jack all he needs to know. The nephilim leans his head against Cas’s shoulder, humming. “We’ll find him,” he says, “And when we do, we’ll rescue Dean.”
Mary’s wretched cries and Sam’s feeble words are all that break the deathly silence suffocating the Bunker.
Cas finds out because of Dean. His final act, a last-minute prayer sent to him before Michael took over. In it, he tells Cas two things: “Take care of them” and “I… I… I lo –“
The message cuts out before he could finish, the bond between them cut – Cas recoiling from the intensity. He shudders, slowly craning his eyes toward the ceiling.
           And cries.
