Could you share your thoughts about beats in writing, please?
OKAY HERE WE GOOOOO this is going to be long but honestly it could have been so much longer so oops!
tl;dr: Beats are when things in the story happen.
So in a mystery novel, for example, when does the crime occur? when do they think they've solved it, but they're wrong? when do they realize they were wrong? when is their life in danger? when do they know who did it? when does the reader know who did it? when is the b-plot introduced and when it is resolved?
These typically happen in a similar place in each mystery novel, because of course it wouldn't make sense if it went: (1) you think you know who did it, and then (2) the crime is committed. Right? or if the very first person they suspected did it and they catch them immediately! that's never what happens because then what's the other 200 pages of the book?
so there is relative order, and you know it even as a passive reader, so then the question is how spaced out are those things throughout the fic or manuscript?
in a romance, it's the same. typically we see:
meet cute/first meeting/first canon meeting (the pilot) e.g. alex meets maggie at the airport and they fight over jurisdiction, or jane and maura work a case together as usual but it's the first one where jane is scared, aka a new start to their existing relationship
why aren't they together off the bat? (aka why is this a romance novel and not a romance sentence?) e.g. alex thinks she's straight and they're good friends, or maura dates elon musk types and jane is, you know, not that
complication e.g. alex comes out and then asks maggie to be her gf but maggie says no because alex is fresh off the boat, or maura starts dating jane's dumbass brother
false high (if there is a third act breakup, this is the happy time before that) e.g. alex and maggie get together and are very happy kissing the girls they want to kiss, or maura dumps tommy because her life with jane is more important to her
low point (this is often the 3rd act breakup, but doesn't have to be) e.g. alex freaks out when family conflicts with romance and dumps maggie, or jane kills maura's dad
KISS KISS KISS (aka the happily ever after) e.g. alex apologizes and sanvers stays together forever because the show was cancelled, or jane performs surgery on maura in the woods and then they kiss forever because the show was cancelled
SO, all of those things have to happen, and beats are when. you can of course put your plot points whenever you want them. it's your life and your art and your hobby!! have fun! but if you want to learn "craft" or whatever, or get traditionally published, you need to know when the conventional beats for your genre are, so that you can show you know what you're doing.
You've noticed beats even if you haven't thought about them. Sometimes a fanfic feels like it's going on too long or ending too abruptly, which is because they didn't place their beats carefully. Maybe it's taking forever to get past the set-up, and then the ending feels rushed. Maybe they got to the end of the plot but kept writing little one-shots or vignettes that don't have any tension in them. Almost all pacing problems can be solved by beats!
There are two main beat sheets I use for writing romcoms, Save the Cat and Romancing the Beat. There are book and workshops for both. My spreadsheet I use for every book uses Save the Cat beats, which was originally developed for screenplays. Here's a screenshot of that from the spreadsheet i use religiously:
I try to focus on
inciting incident at 0 or 10% (catalyst)
fun and games 25-50%
mid point high right around 50%
Things get bad from 50-75 until dark night of the soul from 75-80%
Redemption 80-90%, climax around 90%, final snippet less than 1,000 after end of climax
I do the math on my word count and ideal final word count to reverse outline where i am. in my book that's going to be published, i was really struggling with how to fill the 50-75% chunk; it was perfectly paced up until the shattering of the false high at 50%, and I knew what would happen after the dark night of the soul at 75%, but my project was to figure out how i could keep the plot driving forward and interesting while the MC's mood and situation tanked for a full 25% of the book. It turns out in the most recent draft, that stuff is 52-86%, and is stuff i really love. i was able to work in other plot points earlier that had time to breathe and got the space they needed in that portion, as well as find the balance between 20k of boring moping and maintaining tension while the romance was tanked.
it's very very hard to use beats in a fic you're posting as you're writing it (which is most of the fics i post), but even having it in the back of my mind helps. For the Ultimatum fic i'm writing and posting now, i knew before i started posting what the midpoint false high would be, plus the dark night of the soul, plus the endgame. it's important to make sure any b-plots, or in the case other couples, get their shit resolved around the same times as Kacy does, so that we don't need too much wrap up/exposition after the kacy climax.
what other questions or thoughts do you have about beats and plot pacing? send them to me!

You're Never Too Old...
written by MorganaStorm24
Rating: Teen and up audiences
Warnings: None
Summary:
Childhood is a time of wonder, mystery, exploration, and growth. But when your exploration and growth involve understanding your non-heterosexuality, and your family destroys your wonder and mystery by kicking you out, childhood can suck.
With that in mind, Alex sets out to give Maggie a second shot at enjoying the things from childhood that had been missed. With Alex leading the way, it will be a fun-filled week, a chance to grow together as a couple and take a leaf out of Kara's book.
Because as quickly as Maggie grew up, Kara has clung to her childhood. Everything on Earth is a wonder of spun sugar and soft puppies run through the endless energy and enthusiasm of one solar-powered superhero. It’s adorable when she isn’t gatecrashing Maggie and Alex’s bonding time. What will the couple have to do to avoid the world’s biggest child who just so happens to be “in the area” all of the time?

Featured Fic: Hands 1&2
These were written about three years apart, both for Sanvers fic events. Part 1 is from Alex's point of view, and Part 2 from Maggie's. I think of them as companion love letters to both the characters. Turns out a good love letter is really hard to write! But also worth the agonizing.
While I put them in their own little series, they're also part of my larger one shot collection, called "Meant to Be."

Date Night
Here's a little Sanvers fic as part of the Mods' collection of example fics for the Supergirl May-hem event!
AO3 link
-
Alex ducks down behind a dumpster, nearly falling on her ass as Maggie slides in next to her, bumping into her with enough force to make the redhead have to grab onto the side of the dumpster to hold them both up. She’s utterly disgusted as her hands are immediately covered in a fluid she really hopes hasn’t come from the abandoned mattress, half sticking out the top of the trash.
“Gross.” Alex hisses.
“Sorry,” Maggie says, not really paying attention as she pulls out her gun.
Alex looks over at her in shock. “You brought a gun to date night.”
Maggie nods earnestly. “As current events show, sometimes date night can get derailed and we need a gun. Unless you want to fight whatever the hell kind of alien is trying to murder us with just your bare hands.”
Alex shakes her head, reaching behind her to pull out her own gun. “Nah, not when I have this baby.”
“You were giving me shit when you have your own?”
“I wasn’t giving you shit; I was just finding you very sexy.” Alex leans in to press her lips to her cheek quickly before she dives out from their hiding spot, her gun pointing up at the alien. It’s yellow, large and decidedly ugly.
Maggie joins Alex, her gun immediately finding its target. The alien looks kind of like a giant blob of Jell-O, and she’s not sure if that makes it more or less terrifying. Either way, they have to stop it before it takes over all of downtown. After that, maybe they can carry on with their date night. This is their first one in three weeks because of their jobs and all they want is a quiet night where they can eat at a greasy diner.
“How are we gonna stop it?” Maggie pants, unable to look away from it.
“Shoot now and ask questions later,” Alex says, looking equally as shocked at the appearance of the alien. She pauses after shooting her first round off into the alien, watching as the bullet gets lodged in the alien’s back as it merely scratches over the area where it was shot, tickled by the sensation. “Is it bad that I want to take a bite?”
“Yes.” Maggie nods, looking at Alex like she’s on something. “Now, call your sister to come and deal with this so we can go home and salvage what’s left of our night.”
Maggie has always been a little better at plans. Alex’s insistence on fighting before thoroughly assessing the situation has been her downfall before, and it certainly will be again.
Rushing to do what she says, Alex presses the button on her signal watch once, calling for the help of her sister.
It barely takes ten seconds before Supergirl lowers herself onto the sidewalk in front of them. “How can I…oh, I see.”
“Can you handle it, Supergirl?” Maggie questions. “It’s date night and—”
“Say no more.” Kara holds her hands up. “You two kids get out of here. I’ve got this all under control.”
Alex doesn’t control the cackle that comes out of her mouth as a bench is thrown at Kara, the metal wrapping around her head. That’s what she gets for talking like a chaperone at a middle school dance.
“Well, that wasn’t very polite,” Kara mutters, turning around to deal with the alien and letting the two lovebirds get on with their night.
Alex and Maggie both put their guns away as they back away from the fight, wincing as they see Kara get bellyflopped by the alien, but they’re not worried. They know that she can handle it. Kara is steadily using her heat vision to slice off part of the alien, hoping to injure it enough that it’ll stop rather than having to kill it.
“So, shall we go back to the diner?” Alex asks.
“We have vegan ice cream at home. Want to watch a movie and then head to bed for an early night?” Maggie links their fingers together, pulling Alex into her side more firmly, trying to warm herself up in the cool air. Her leather jacket might look cool but she should really invest in a warmer one now that it’s getting colder.
“Oh?” Alex smiles down at her, her eyebrows wiggling in the least sexy way possible. “Early night, huh?”
Maggie shrugs. “Yeah, it’s been quite a night. Maybe we should…sleep.”
“In your dreams, Sawyer,” Alex says, bumping her hip into Maggie’s as they walk.
Maggie leans into her side a little more as they fall into step, their shoes tapping against the ground in a steady, soothing rhythm, a nice sound to compliment the comfortable silence they’ve fallen into. A silence that is broken by the sad hum that Alex lets out as they walk past the diner they were in earlier. The one that they didn’t actually get to eat in.
Maggie sighs but smiles at her nonetheless, her dimples coming out in full force. “You still want a burger, don’t you?”
Alex looks a little guilty as she winces. “Yeah, kind of a lot, actually.”
“Fine, but I get to pick the movie when we get home.”
“Babe, if you think I care about that particular activity when we get home, you’re sadly mistaken.”
“Touché.”

20 questions for fic writers
Thanks for the tag, @lilolilyr!
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
135 fics total!
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
2,436,430 words (jfc hahah)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Ever? Listing them in vague order of when I started writing for them: Supergirl, Wynonna Earp, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Grace and Frankie, This Way Up, Once Upon a Time, Madre Solo hay Dos (just on Tumblr), Abbott Elementary, Hacks, and Julia
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
ALL of them are Supergirl from back in the early-ish days of the show when it was a pretty massive (by femslash standards, I suppose) and very active fandom! It's actually so interesting seeing how absolutely nothing I've written in more than half a decade even shows up, since I've largely switched to smaller fandoms since then.
But the top 5 fics by kudos are:
Stronger Together, a collection of one-shots for various Supergirl ships (with a few gen fics mixed in), which has nearly 5k kudos (WILD to me as someone now in a fandom with maybe 25 people total haha)
Welcome to the Gayborhood, my first ever fic, a looong Sanvers and Supercorp professor AU that still keeps the alien/supernatural elements of canon
6,500 miles away...but getting closer, a Sanvers epistolary fic that my wife and I actually co-wrote and posted 1 letter/email per day every day for many months
Noise Complaint, a Sanvers next-door neighbor AU that, hilariously, given its placement in the top 5 here, is what catalyzed a series of events that led to me very much leaving the fandom (and fandom writ large for nearly a year)
Supercat Sanvers 2020, a Sanvers and Supercat political AU that was maybe one of the last long-form works I wrote before moving out of DC!
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I really try to! Sometimes if it's from a person I know well, I end up responding via DMs, esp if there are questions about what comes next, plotting elements, etc., that I don't necessary want everyone to see while the fic is still being posted, but mostly I try to respond on AO3. I've gotten a bit worse in the past few years just because I'll manage to eke out a bit of time to write, which puts me behind on my work, and then I don't leave myself time to respond, and by the time I DO have time, it feels awkwardly late to do so. But even if I don't respond, I absolutely love/cherish/adore/etc. every single kind comment I've ever been given <3
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Forgoten, but not Gone - a Sanvers amnesia AU set post-breakup that's heavy on the angst with a rather ambiguous ending. I got talked into writing a part 2 that resolves the angst haha, but taken on it's own it's definitely my angstiest ending!
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Huh idk! Most of my fics end on fairly happy, if a bit open, endings. I'm not a big fan of having all the loose ends tied up, and I realllyyyy don't do the marriage/2 kids/white picket fence epilogue, so I guess maybe the political AU has to be up there because it actually envisions a world where a queer woman wins the presidency on a progressive platform, and that feels rather utopian 🙃
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not in a while, though I used to back in the days, like super vitriolic shit (big fandoms with too-big emotions, man... which has really kept me away maybe forever from those kinds of fandoms!)
9. Do you write smut?
Haha very much so. I've written and posted before about why, but I really believe there's so much interesting character work and exploration that can be done by exploring characters' pleasures, their desires (both thwarted and realized), their fantasies, etc. Obviously smut isn't the only way to do this, but fanfic feels like one of the few venues where it's a real possibility!
10. Do you write crossovers?
Nah, not really. I've written a handful of bring characters x and y into the universe of another show fics, but that feels mostly different. Every so often I'll borrow vague character outlines for tertiary characters in other fics just to see if folks recognize them (had Grace Hanson as a grumpy background character in a Sanvers fic set at PT for instance hah)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Once or twice, but we got them taken down
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yeah, one of my SG fics was translated into Russian! I'm not sure if it's still up (tbh I can't recall which one; it's been a long time!) I've also had a couple podfics now made of my fics, one of which I still need to go listen to when I get the time!!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yeah! The long-form Sanvers epistolary fic my wife and I co-wrote together, and a group of Supercat authors got together and did a delightfully chaotic round robin, each writing one sentence, then setting a timer for the next person to write the next sentence, etc., until we had Intergalactic Standard Cuddling
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
Oh man, I really don't know that I have a favorite! I really appreciate what various ships can offer me at different times - there are certain themes that make sense to explore with one pairing but not at all with another, or certain AUs that work in one fandom but not really in another. Basically, if a show is giving me multiple female characters who interact in canon in ways that go beyond existing near each other, I'm intrigued, and if these characters actually get depth and complexity, I'm probably in! There are, however, some ships that I might not end up feeling fannish/creative about even though I love them as ships (I talked a lot to @trying-to-get-somewhere-real about this recently, actually!), so it's hard to name a favorite when the metrics get all wonky!
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
I don't want to say never, but I have a Cat-centric fic that'll end on Supercat that just has a lot of angst that coincided with a period of unexpected loss and grief in my own life in ways that have made it really hard to get back into even now (it just feels so...enmeshed with that moment, even though the timing was utterly coincidental)
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I do a good job with dialogue and getting characters' voices down - I'm really into the character side of things (which is also what gets me invested fannishly in shows! I want a show that cares about developing their characters first and foremost vs. a show where plot takes priority)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Certain kinds of action scenes haha - also I tire easily of writing things that feel repetitive to things I've done/written before (this was more of an issue when I took prompts)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Largely, this isn't something I've had to deal with much outside of maybe a few phrases and sentences from multilingual characters. I've talked before about how it was actually the language/translation barrier that kept me from writing for Madre Solo hay Dos. I don't speak Spanish, and getting a show entirely via the Netflix-provided translations meant 1) I was fairly certain there were some word choice/dialect peculiarities I was missing, and 2) I couldn't catch the rhythms of their speech, the cadence of their voices at least in ways that corresponded to the specific words. For me, voice matters so much, and it really felt like a barrier to not have access to the source language because I felt like I couldn't do these two women justice!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Supergirl
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Oh I've answered this elsewhere with 2-3 works, and tbh I don't think it's changed since then! I'm actually far more interested in others' favorite fics of mine because it's so interesting to think about the question of *what* sticks with a person from yours (it's often so idiosyncratic!!)
I'm getting to this pretty late, so I won't tag anyone, assuming many people already have been, but if ya see this and want to participate, feel free to give me a tag! I always love seeing people talk about their own writing :)

1, 26, 77
Sorry you had a bad day! Hope the rest of your week is better!
Thanks friend! 💛
1. Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics? - I think I like multichapter but it’s hard for mw to finish so I’ll do shorter multi chapter fics lol, like 3-8 chapters. Usually only like 20-30k. It’s like the fun of writing a multi chapter fic without the commitment
26. Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride? - probably the sanvers college au Miss Murder that I wrote a while back. Honestly the closest thing to a crack fic i’ve ever written but it was a lot of fun 😂
77. Do you have a favorite scene you’ve written from [Fanfic Name] story/chapter? - you didn’t name a specific story so i’ll just pick a favorite scene from any, and I have to say from my greenelan WASP au Days Carry On it was a particular scene that ended a chapter on a cliffhanger after a love confession and my friends got very mad at me and it was very fun to write 😂

Yellow Sun - Supercorp
Lena had never be more comfortable ever in her entire life - and she has a hell of a expensive sofa to use at her place. But, if she was going to be honest with herself, it probably wasn't the couch that was making her so comfortable.
She was laying down on Kara's couch - the same old and small couch her friend has since she moved to that apartment according to their other friends - facing the TV where some ramdom Disney movie was playing for the last hour or so. Kara had insisted she needed to watch that particular movie and honestly Lena could never say 'no' to her. Speaking of the blonde, Kara was laying behind her, one arm wrapped around her waist to keep her from falling in the ground - and also pulling her very very close - the other one folded under her own head to give her enough height to watch the movie over Lena's head. Lena's own hand was resting on top of Kara's arm while the other one was under her cheek.
Lena tried to seach on her mind how exactly they ended up like that, but her search came back in blank. She couldn't believe how close they had to be to fit in the tiny space on the couch, or how good it felt to have Kara as your big spoon. And Lena hates cuddling, she tried to remember herself that.
Apparently not with Kara.
To be fair, there was a lot of things Kara was the exception for to her.
Halfway through the movie, after hearing her friend's soft laughs directly on her ear everytime the movie amused her somehow, Lena finally relax and allowed herself to just enjoy the moment. She could always overthink it another time. What she couldn't do another time was having Kara spooning her on her couch, so she was going to take all of it as she could. And maybe mark that day as the best day of her life.
The boy who was apparently training a dragon had just acquired his first success when there was a knock in the door. They both raised their heads to look at it, a little startled by the sound. There was a second of silence, before she felt Kara relaxing behind her again and her body instantly did the same, melting back on the warmthy surrounding her.
"It's Alex." Kara declared.
"Oh." Kara had told her Alex had to work till late and that's why she would be missing their Movie Night. "Aren't you going to open the door?" She asked when Kara made no indication to do so.
She felt the blonde shaking her head. "Nope. She has a key and I'm too comfy to move." Before the words were even out of her mouth, Kara snuggled even more into her, going as far as burrying her nose in her hair.
That made Lena's heart drop to her stomach. Not because she didn't liked it - because, oh boy, she really did - but because that made her body react in ways she wished she could control. Kara had just displayed one of her powers right there in front of her, reminding her once more that her best friend wasn't human and that she had some powers to use as she liked, so she must be able to hear how fast her heart started beating when she got impossibly closer.
Could she pretend Alex had just scared her with the knock? But Kara didn't even said anything about it, wouldn't it be weird? What if she didn't actually hear it? Why did she had to be in love with her best friend?
At some point during her internal battle, Alex had decided to use her keys to let herself in, as Lena could hear the rustling as she opened it. Movie forgotten, not that she was paying much attention before, she watched as Kara's older sister entered the apartment holding three bags of take out food, her cellphone, wallet and keys in only one hand as the other one was pushing the door open and then closing it.
"Hope I'm not too late for Fargo, I really want to watch that one." Alex said as she dropped her things at the side table. "Maggie is still stuck at the precint and she said she's too tired to stop by later. Anyway, I brought..." The redhead stoped talking once she turned around to face them.
Lena watched, in horror almost, as Alex frowned when she saw them cuddling on Kara's couch, looking them up and down twice, before a smile slowly started to spread all over her face. She could spot a glint in the agent's eyes as she took several steps foward and suddenly Alex looked like Maggie was in front of her, not them.
"Oh my God!" She exclamed, pointing at them. Her smile somehow got even bigger and Lena felt Kara raising her head again behind her to look at whatever her sister was so excited about. "Holy shit, you finally did it!"
"What?" Kara was the one to question her sister and Lena was happy about it because she was too confused to say anything.
"You two finally figure it out!" Alex pumped a fist in the air as she celebrated not so quietly. "Oh, God, let me tell you how happy I am!" And apparently it was going to take some time for her to do it because the took her jacket off and plopped herself in the armchair besides the couch with a sigh, that sounded tired, and a huge grin. "If I had to go another sisters' night hearing about how perfect Lena is and how you're never going to have her, I would have go insane!" Alex hit both hands against the arms of the chair and laughed.
Lena felt Kara's body go instantly tense behind her. She almost felt like a rock suddenly, the arm around her waist shot away from her like it was on fire and Kara managed to put a inch of distance between them in the tight space. The CEO was still a little confused on what was going on, but she was sure of one thing: Kara think she's perfect. Which is an absurd idea, because Kara is the definition of perfection herself, how could Lena ever compare to her?
"I mean, it took you guys long enough! All the pinning looks, the longing looks, the suffering looks. And the flirting!" Alex shook her head. "Jesus, all that flirting was lighting a flame in every room you two went."
"Alex..." Kara tried to stop her sister and Lena could hear, even in that small simple word, how scared she was that Alex was going to keep going.
Which she did. "How many times I had to sit here and hear as Kara went 'Lena is so smart, and kind, and selfless, and clever and so so beautiful! I wish she would look at me like more than a friend' and don't get me started on the time she would rant for hours when you wore that three pieces suit. Boy, I thought you had broke my sister!" Alex laughed again.
"Alex, please..." Kara was trying to find a way out, she could feel it. But she couldn't get away without jumping across Lena on the couch and touch her was apparently the last thing Kara wanted to do in that moment.
"No, no! Now that you finally grew the balls to tell her about how you feel after months and months and months of telling me how much you wanted to do it, I'm allowed to have some fun out of it!" The agent got up suddenly and headed for the kitchen. "Let me grab a beer first and I will tell you everything about the time you asked Kara to go to that party with you and how she spent three days to choose a dress."
Lena watched as Alex walked to the fridge and she wanted nothing more than get up and kiss the woman because she just made her night. Kara had other ideas, though. The second Alex had turned her back to them, she used her flying ability to float from behind her friend and stand in front of the couch. Lena also managed to sit up, a little slower, as she opened her mouth to ask Kara to calm down because she was clearly freaking out. Her eyes were wide, she had both hands in front of her body like she was trying to defend herself, and she was putting as much distance between them as her small living room would allow.
"Lena, I..." She sounded so in panic and so scared that Lena felt her heart break inside her chest. How could this wonderful woman think she couldn't possibly feel the same about her.
"Kara."
"I'm so so so sorry, I never meant to... I shouldn't... I..." Her back finally hit the wall behind her and now Kara looked like a deer in the headlights. Her arms fell to her side and her head dropped in defeat. "I'm sorry. Please, don't hate me."
It broke Lena's heart even more. Kara sounded so broken, so hopeless, so terrified with the perspective of having just lost Lena. She could almost hear the blonde's heart breaking at every word she spoke and she could see how completely defeated she looked with her shoulders dropped and head low, hands on her hips and small sniffs here and there as she waited for Lena's veredict.
"Uh, guys?" Lena didn't turned around to see how confused Alex was when she got up.
The distance between her and Kara was probably less than ten steps, but it felt like she was trying to reach the top of the Everest when she started walking. There was a thousand words she wanted to say in that moment, speeches she had prepared numerous times before if they ever got to that point, praises and sweet nothings, but it all got stuck in the back of her throat, a huge lumb leaving her speechless in what had to be the most important time of her life. Instead, she walked.
Kara could have run away if she wanted and Lena wondered if her body was betraying her like hers, if she was stuck in place like the words on her mouth. Either way, she was glad Kara stood there the way she did.
And maybe she was hoping she was going to recover on the way, but when she finally reached the top of the mountain, breathless, scared and excited, she realized that words could never make justice to that. So Lena ordened her legs to stop and to her knees stay firm on their place and not fail her, and now her arms would do the job.
She raised her right hand and placed her index finger under Kara's chin so she would raise her head to look at her. She needed to see those blue eyes again, she needed to see that face again. Kara's eyes were filled with tears and fear, and she looked so so lost. Lena had no idea what she looked like, but it had to be something in the lines of 'completely and utterly in love' and 'hopelessly happy'. And maybe that was what make Kara relax under her touch. Not completely, she still looked terrified, but she also stoped looking like she was a second of running away like a scared animal.
So Lena smiled at her, the most crude and honest smile she had ever gave anyone, the smile that belonged to Kara and Kara only, and moved her hand to cup her friend's cheek. Her skin was soft and it changed under her fingers when Kara swallowed hard and clenched her jaws. Lena used the tip of her index finger to trace the line of the strong jaw until it was relaxed again and Kara might have realized what was going on by now because she also smiled at her.
It was small, still uncertain, definitely still scared, but it was breath taking and warm as the love she could see shinning in the blue eyes. In a world where they lived in, filled with bad guys and murdering folks, with people who got out of their way to make Lena's life a living hell or to try and kill her, in a city where aliens and humans hated her simply because of her last name, no one could blame her for being so deeply in love with someone who shines like the sun. Her very personal yellow sunshine.
Lena ran her hand back until it was touching soft blonde curls behind Kara's neck and then she was leaning foward, closing her eyes and raising her other hand to cup Kara's face too. And if she thought having Kara as her friend was the best thing that ever happened in her life, kissing her could never be compared to it. She knew, still standing there, lips smashed together and shallow breath, that it would be her last first kiss.
(Unless she decided to kiss Alex as a form of thank you so fucking much!)
It took Kara a while to react, but then she was placing both hands on Lena's hips and pressing back into the kiss, and they both felt like they could die in that second and be happy. Suddenly Kara gasped and pulled Lena closer to her, swirling her arms around the brunette's waist to pull her into her body, melting their bodies together. Lena had to stay on her tip toes since she hadn't the advantage of her high heels and she threw her arms on the other woman's shoulders, locking them behind her neck.
They broke their kiss and their foreheads rested against each other, the tip of their noses touching gently. When Lena finally opened her eyes her breath got stuck in her lungs. Kara was looking down at her with so much love and adoration, Lena could hardly believe her luck. If she wasn't feeling the same thing, she would have doubted someone could feel so much.
The CEO used her left hand to play with the strays of blonde hair as they both smiled at each other with the huggest smiles anyone ever held. Lena could finally hold her ray of sunshine in her arms, it was almost too much to deal with.
"Your heart is beating really fast." Kara whispered with a dreamy look.
Lena scoffed quietly. "You better get used to that if we're going to keep doing this."
Blue eyes sparkled with joy and hapiness and bliss. "You're not the only one." Kara took one arm from her wait to be able to grab hold of her right hand. Lena allowed her to gently remove her arm away from her neck and watched in awe as the superhero ran her hand down Lena's arm until she reached her palm, which she coaxed to stay flat as she moved it to place right in the middle of her chest, between her breasts.
For sure, right in that spot, Lena could feel Kara's heart beating fast against her palm, almost like it was trying to reach her from inside. Lena sighed and leaned foward for another kiss, something Kara was really happy to give.
When they got appart, not even five seconds after, there was a throat cleaning behind them and they both remembered they weren't alone. Kara barely tilted her head to the side to look at her sister and Lena wasn't ready to add any space between them, so she kept her position, only turning her head enough to also look at Alex, her temple now resting against the blonde's forehead.
"Yes?" Lena asked with a smirk.
Alex was still standing in the middle of the kitchen, arms folded, her right on top holding her beer. She shrugged. "Oh, nothing. Just wasn't feeling like watching my baby sister making out, that's all." She was trying to sound mad, but they could all hear the hapiness in her voice and the smile on her face also gave her away.
Lena and Kara giggled happily at each other before looking back at the agent. "Alex, I'm really greatful for what you did..." Kara nodded eagerly to her words. "I will even buy you a new motorcicle to show how very thankful I am, but I'm going to ask you to leave."
Alex pursed her lips to stop her smile and nodded. "I didn't know you had that into you, Luthor."
Lena shrugged. "No offense, agent."
Alex raised her hands in front of her. "None taken." She put her beer down, grabbed her jacket and started walking to the door. "I understand." She stoped to raise one hand to Kara give her a high-five, which she obviously did, then she went to take her phone, wallets and keys to put them in her back poket, then she started digging into one of the take out bags. "I'm going to take one of these, if you don't mind." She teased.
"Feel free to do it." Lena waved the hand that wasn't still feeling Kara's heartbeat.
Alex took one of the white boxs out and nodded. "Anyway, have a nice evering, ladies." She opened the door and was halfway out when she turned around. "Just to be sure, you two weren't together when I walked in, right?"
They both shook her head, but Lena wad the one who actually answered. "Nope." She popped the 'p', something Kara had never hear her doing before and it make her giggle.
"Just to be sure." Alex smiled at them one last time and started walking out again, slowly closing the door behind her. They still heard her saying: "I can't believe I lost the bet and it's my own fault!"
"What bet?" Lena asked once they were finally alone.
Kara shrugged. "Maggie and her took a bet on how long it would take for me to get the girl."
"How long did she bet?"
"Never." The blonde rolled her eyes. "Maggie said it could go from one year to five."
Lena nodded, clearly amused. "Well, next time I want to join the bet. I was always very good at gambling."
"Oh really?" Kara hugged her again, both arms around her waist. "But now I have the girl, what are you going to bet on next?"
"We will figure it out." Their lips met again, all smiles and caresses and they both felt like they had found home.
Months later, when Lena won the bet of how long it would take for Kara to propose after already winning the 'How long will it take for Kara to ask Lena to move in with her?' and 'How long till they get a dog together?', Alex and Maggie banned her from their bets.

sanvers + lost. (sorry these all somehow turned into the one word prompt things that some people ask for. i personally like seeing how the writer interprets the word and what they decide to make)
She’s pretty sure she’s dreaming, but dreaming has neverfelt quite this vivid.
And she’s had some pretty vivid nightmares since she joinedthe DEO.
The DEO! Why would… why would she be at home in Midvale? She’s on assignment, she…
“Morning babe!” Maggie greets her from the kitchen, six mugs set out for coffee as Kara bustles around behind her stirring up a meanpancake batter.
“Maggie, what – ”
“Good morning, honey.” A scruffy kiss lands on her cheek andAlex jumps, and then Alex sobs, and then Alex backs away quickly, quickly, quickly.
“Dad, you – no, Cadmus has you, you’re not – and Maggie’snot – no, no, Cadmus has you, I’m dreaming, or – is that my board?”
Her eyes land on the surfboard – propped up near the backdoor – she rode in her last competition before leaving for Stanford. The oneshe completely wiped out on. The one she’d tossed in a fit of rage, a fit ofdespair, a fit of not being worthy, of not being deserving, of not being goodenough.
It’s clean and it’s sleek and it’s new-looking, and Elizasteps in from the backyard with a wide smile.
“Oh Alex, I’m so proud of you. My beautiful girl.”
Eliza steps forward and hugs her and kisses both her cheeksand Jeremiah beams and Maggie giggles with Kara as they try to smear eachother’s noses with pancake batter.
“Mom, what – what’d I do?”
Eliza shrugs as she steps back from Alex’s befuddled arms.“You don’t have to do anything for me to be proud of you, Alexandra.”
Alex squints and Alex steps back again.
“No. No, this isn’t right, this isn’t… The DEO – J’onn needsme, I – ”
“The DEO? Alex, we haven’t been bothered by those damnsoldiers since you created that serum to keep Kara safe from kryptonite, remember?”
Alex blinks and Maggie sidles up and kisses her slow, kissesher soft, kisses her passionate. “Mmm, my brilliant fiancée, being brilliant. And beautiful. As always.”
“Your… fiancée?” Alex blinks and Kara laughs.
“How early were you up to surf this morning, Alex? You evenawake yet?”
“I… no… I…”
But Maggie’s lips are soft and Kara’s smile is warm andJeremiah’s cologne is strong and Eliza’s pride is… genuine. Deep.Unconditional.
And the ringing in the back of her mind diminishes, thealarm bells in the pit of her stomach settle, the tension in her ready-to-fightmuscles dispels.
Because in a half hour, J’onn and James and Winn and M’gannare streaming through the door, with champagne and with orange juice and withpie, because Sunday is for brunch and brunch is for family and family is wholeand here and now.
Alex leans into Jeremiah as she laughs and Eliza strokes herhair and asks everyone if they’d ever seen such a perfect couple and Kara ispopping champagne bottles with her powers and she’s kissing Alex’s cheek as shecrosses past where she’s sitting with Maggie, who’s joking with James andM’gann, who’s sitting next to a skeptical-looking J’onn listening to anoverenthusiastic pitch for some new computer whosawhatsit from Winn.
And by the end of the day, she forgets that there issomething to worry about. Because this is her life. And her life is perfect.
She waves energetically from way out on the surf when shesees Maggie and Kara, weeks and weeks and lifetimes later, standing on theshore waiting for her, waving her in. She tosses up a hand and knows Kara willbe able to see that she’s gesturing one, one more, one more wave.
And she catches it, and it’s perfect, and it’s beautiful, and she doesn’t risk swiveling her eyes toward Maggie, but she knows she’simpressed and she knows she’s turned on and she knows she’s in love, in love,in love.
She rides through the funnel of a wave until it crashesdown, and she carries the board the rest of the way out to Maggie and Kara.
“Alex. You look happy,” Kara says, but she doesn’t soundlike herself. Alex furrows her brow.
“Of course I’m happy, Kara, why wouldn’t I be happy?”
Kara and Maggie exchange a glance, and Alex’s frown deepens.
“What’s wrong with you two? Didn’t you see me ride thatwave?”
“Yeah, it was great, babe, you were great – you’re alwaysgreat – but Ally, baby, you – ”
“Alex, remember when I was under the effects of the BlackMercy?”
Alex stares between Kara and Maggie and Alex laughs.
“The what now?”
“Babe, I know this is going to be so hard. And I’m so sorry, but honey, it – Al, this world you’reliving in? It’s not the only world out there. It’s not the world you’re… you’reactually from.”
“What the hell, Maggie? What’re you talking about?”
“Alex, it’s me. It’s your sister, you have to trust me,trust us, it – this isn’t real. None of this, I’m sorry, none of it isreal. What’s real is that right now, you’re hallucinating, you’re… you’recreating the perfect world, your perfect world, around yourself, butyour real body… Alex, you’re dying, the Black Mercy will keep you here foreverif you don’t come with us, and I – ”
“Kara, what the hell? You’ve been here with me, you’ve been stayinghere with me, while Maggie and my apartment gets renovated in NationalCity, you – ”
Kara pales and Maggie gulps, and Alex notices why the momentafter they do.
Because suddenly Kara and Maggie aren’t the only Kara andMaggie on the beach.
Suddenly, the two women she’s been living with – the womenin soft clothes and sunburnt skin – make the two women she’s been talking to,with their pale expressions and their wide eyes and the sidearm and badge onMaggie’s hip, stand out as imposters, as invaders, as fakes. As threats.
“What the hell – ”
“Ally, I’m so sorry, babe, but Kara’s right, you have tolisten to her – ”
“Listen to her? Alex, who are these people? Why do they looklike us? Should we call Clark? He can help us get rid of them, Alex.”
“Alex, babe, this isn’t you, this isn’t your life. Thisisn’t the life we’re building together – ”
“The life you’re building together? You might looklike me, but I’m the one with the finger Danvers put a ring on – ”
“What the – Al, you wanna – ”
“Maggie, don’t let yourself get distracted, we need to – ”
“Right. Right right right. Al, I – no – ”
No, because the Black Mercy versions of Kara and Maggie arerestraining them, now, are fighting them punch for punch, mirroring their movesand holding them down, Eliza and Jeremiah suddenly on the shore to oversee thebrawl.
“Babe, this isn’t your dad. But I promise you, we’re gonnafind him, Alex, I promise you but this – this isn’t how – ” She takes a punchto the gut from herself as Kara slams herself into the sand.
“Alex, you need to listen to Maggie – the real Maggie – andme, Alex, it’s me, I’m me, I’m your sister, I – I broke your hand the firsttime I tried a human handshake, and you crawled under the kitchen table with methe first time I got scared of the popcorn maker, and you needed stitches thattime I pulled that girl out of that van, and you know why I’m telling youthis?”
Kara is yelling, now, is pleading, because the other versionof herself is holding her down, is holding her back, just as the other versionof Maggie is holding Maggie down, is holding Maggie back.
“Because this world, Alex? This world doesn’t allow for thatkind of pain, for any pain. And when I was trapped in my own world, youtold me, Alex, you saved me – you told me that the world can’t always beabout pain, but Alex, Maggie needs you, J’onn needs you.”
“Don’t listen to this imposter, Alexandra, she’s trying tocorrupt your beautiful mind – ”
“Alex please, I need you. I have always needed you, morethan I’ve ever needed anyone, anything. And the world needs you, Alex,Jeremiah needs you! He needs you to rescue him from Cadmus, and the world needsyou to keep it safe, and I need my sister!”
Alex stares at the tears streaming down Kara’s face, at theblood streaming down Maggie’s. Her Kara’s. Her Maggie’s.
Hers. Because Jeremiah. Jeremiah needs her. J’onn. Theworld. Maggie.
And Kara. Kara, Kara, Kara.
Calloused hands take her by the arms, now, and it’s the lastbit of convincing she needs, because Jeremiah would never hurt her, never, andthis? This grip hurts.
“Alex, you don’t need to rescue me. You don’t need to rescueanyone. I’m here, Kara’s safe. All thanks to you, Alex. You can liveyour life here, with all of us, with the people who love you, not these… notthese imposters.”
His grip on her arms hurts, and his words are soft, but hiseyes are hard.
And Alex kisses his forehead anyway, because she knows. Sheknows it’s the last chance she’ll get in a long time.
But he lets her go, because he doesn’t understand. Hedoesn’t understand that she’s saying goodbye
“I will rescue you, Dad. I will. That’s a promise. And I’ll find a way to make you proud, Mom. Somehow.”
Jeremiah’s eyes glow and he leaps on her, then, to preventher from reaching Kara, to prevent her from reaching Maggie. She hits the sandand her surfboard snaps against her ribs, and she screams, and Maggie strugglesto free herself enough to reach for her hand, and Kara struggles to reach forher other, and Eliza yells and Jeremiah’s fist raises and the world goes black.
The world goes black until she opens her eyes, and shegasps, and she sits bolt upright.
And she sobs.
Kara and Maggie’s hands find her as J’onn grasps her thigh, and she lets her sister and her once-fiancée-now-girlfriend hold her, hold her, their tears mixing with hers on her face.
“I’m sorry, Ally,” Maggie whispers into her hair, and Alexmoves back and shakes her head.
“No. Mags, babe, I… no, I – I was lost. I was lost, and youtwo found me. That’s… never apologize for that.”
She leans up and kisses Maggie’s lips and she leans back andpulls Kara into a bone-crushing hug.
“You’re my sister, Alex. I will never let you stay lost.Never.”

Sidelines (Part 3)
(idk what happened. I typed and this is what came out. I feel like it should have a TRIGGER WARNING. So yeah, be warned... I think. Enjoy reading!)
Alex Danvers x fem!reader
One week. Seven days. Seven fucking days of avoiding Alex Danvers, of always being close to tears every time you remember what happened that night. Also, always cringing whenever you do.
• • •
Lexie pulled back. You were shaken out of your hazy mind, and you sobered up enough to make sense of what was happening. You can still feel Lexie’s hot breath against your mouth, and you can’t help but want to pull her closer and kiss her again.
“Y/n. Stop. You’re…” It was blurry, what Lexie said afterwards. Right when she said “stop,” you pulled back, horrified. You looked into her eyes. They were so big and you can see how she was a mixture of alarmed, confused, and terrified—fucking terrified. God, you ruin everything.
Lexie was still talking, but all you can hear was ringing. You were getting dizzy, as if you’re close to having a mental breakdown. If there was a “zooming” feeling, it was this. The tequila doesn’t help—it was making everything worse. And your heart was racing and everything was sharp yet they aren’t.
“Leave… leave, please leave.” Your voice went from low mutter to above average volume. You weren’t shouting though, it was just loud enough to stress conviction, your need for her to leave. “Please, Lexie, leave…” you were whispering now, because you’re close to hyperventilating. You were close to having a breakdown, not being able to process what was happening.
“Y/n… no…” You looked up at her with tears in your eyes. You were still battling the alcohol in your body, that’s why when you tried to push her off your sofa, your hand slipped from her shoulder. You kept on trying until she relented. She stood up.
“Y/n…” You heard her try once more. You shook your head fiercely and muttered “leave.”
You were a mess and you only half care about it.
• • •
Every time you remember what you did, you cringe. No, you shouldn’t have wasted that bottle of tequila that night. You shouldn’t have given in to urges. Or, you should have gone to a bar.
You just went out of the building where you work when the ground shook. You immediately parted your legs to steady yourself then, covered your head. You looked around and saw people panicking. The ground was still shaking—it was an earthquake, obviously—so you looked up, and immediately became scared as you saw how cracks were forming on the building’s walls. The shaking became harder, and your previous attempt to balance yourself failed. You fell on the ground.
You were panicking too—except, with wild eyes, you tried to search your brain for anything that you’ve learned from the earthquake drills you attended ever since preschool. Nothing was coming up, you were too distracted by the screams other people were eliciting. And, of course, by the ground shaking. You were just able to remember to go to—
A block of cement fell just a few feet near you. That made you scream. There was smoke everywhere, caused by the fall of the piece of building. You coughed then covered your nose and mouth. With squinting eyes, you looked up and saw the cracks went all the way up, and that your workplace was showing signs of giving up (more like, falling down). You scrambled to get up, and you just followed your instincts by ducking and placing both hands above your head. You tried to hold back your breath to not inhale the smoke. All you can think about is getting away from the falling building but, surprise, buildings surround you and they were all shaking. Despite this, you ran, towards what you consider “away” from it all. You remained on the sidewalk, a bit far from the road, since above the screams were horns of cars hitting and missing each other, of buses screeching to avoid car crashes.
“Oh my god, the world is ending,” you muttered to yourself, your voice shaking. You were starting to lose hope fast, because nowhere is safe.
“Supergirl!” You heard someone scream. You looked up cautiously and, there, up in the sky, you saw Kara flying around, trying to save people… or stop buildings from falling. Your attention was suddenly diverted towards someone moaning near you. You looked around, but you can’t concentrate because a lot of people were running past you. It was doing things with your head.
The shaking stopped. But the noise everyone was causing didn’t. There were lots of cries, hissing of smoke, and loud ringing. The ambulance and police cars can be heard getting near. You once again heard the moan. You looked around. Then you noticed, just at least three to four feet away from you, a car crashed on a telephone pole.
A woman was underneath the slightly raised car. You gasped and started running towards the scene.
“Oh my god, oh my god,” you muttered repeatedly. You were kneeling beside the woman. Your hands were shaking, and they were circling just near the woman. If you weren’t currently in a situation as serious as this, you would have laughed at yourself because it was as if you were trying to heal her with your “miraculous” shaking hands.
“Ma’am, are you okay?” you asked instinctively. “Of course, you’re not. You’re fucking trapped under a car,” you muttered, angry that you were so dumb to ask the question in the first place. “Um… I’m gonna get you help… oh my god, blood,” you exclaimed, when you saw that blood was coming out from her mid-stomach. Her lower half was under the car. You don’t know what was holding the car slightly up. Whatever it is, it was the only thing keeping this woman from death.
You feel like you’re in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
You tried to think. Stop the wound from bleeding; you heard Lexie’s voice in your head. You placed both hands on top of the woman’s stomach.
“H-Hurts…” you stared at the woman’s face—it was filled with drying blood—and you just barely managed to throw a sarcastic line at her. This is the reason why you’re not in a humanitarian job like Lexie’s, or Kara’s, or… Maggie’s. You’re better at behind the desk jobs rather than socializing (except when picking informants and interviews) and helping other people.
“Well, I am keeping you alive by stopping the bleeding. I’m gonna call for help—Supergirl!” you bellowed. You honestly don’t recognize yourself right now. Everything’s happening so fast and it’s changing you.
Of course, she wouldn’t come. She may be trapped in keeping a building from falling apart. You looked around. Everyone’s either in the same situation as the woman, or as you.
“Y/n?” You turned to your and looked up and saw Maggie Sawyer. Maggie freaking Sawyer was staring down to you… was that concern in her eyes?
She was wearing her uniform. She doesn’t look like any of the people near you—her face was calm and not single cell in her body was screaming “panicking!”
“Help her.” You were surprised by your voice. She immediately looked at the bleeding woman. She nodded repeatedly and spoke something at her walkie-talkie. The familiar face, even if it’s Maggie Sawyer, makes you want to cry. You don’t know what’s happening with your emotions, they were all messed up.
“Help is coming. Y/n, you’re bleeding.” You frowned at what Maggie said. You’re not. You would feel it if you were. God, why was she so dumb?
“What? I’m not. This woman is. And if help doesn’t come any minute, the car might go down and crush this woman—and my hands.” You heard the tremor in your voice. You don’t know why you’re close to crying, but you are, and you so badly want to go back to your apartment and hide under your covers and stay there until you die. Blood was rushing to your head and you feel hot and all you can think about is how you want to leave because nothing about everything that is happening is right.
You were always so good with keeping your head above drowning problems, or dealing with crisis, but you don’t know why you’re reacting as if you’ve never seen catastrophe hit the city before.
“I’m aware of that. It seems as though you are not aware that your head’s bleeding, as well as your side.” She—Maggie—was kneeling beside you and you didn’t even notice her kneel. You were getting scared of everything she’s saying, simply because you don’t believe her.
“You keep spacing out…” You heard her say. You just frowned. “Let me take over…” Her words were like cut scripts from a malfunctioning TV. You felt something move your hands, and suddenly, Maggie was in your place. You sat on the ground, and just stared at Maggie blankly. What the fuck is happening? You keep trying to focus yourself, but everything was loose. It was as if you’re everywhere.
“It’s a deep cut—hey, Y/n, look at me. Focus on me.” You were trying to locate the cuts Maggie said you had. Your right hand reached that side of your head, and you were refusing to believe that wherever you touch, it was sticky. Sticky with blood. You pulled back your fingers then stared at it. Oh god, blood. Deep, dark, sticky, red blood. You looked down. You saw your shirt ripped, as a gash can be seen in between the rip of the shirt. It looked deep—angry red, but not deep enough to bleed out.
“Y/n, focus on me,” you heard Maggie say once more. Her eyes were fiercely on you, but her hands remained on the woman’s stomach. Your gaze kept shifting from the woman to Maggie, back and forth.
“What happened to me?” You managed to whisper, because you don’t remember pain. You don’t remember being hit by anything. If it weren’t for Maggie, you wouldn’t have known you were even bleeding. There was no pain. Was it from the block of cement that fell near you? It can’t be, because it was far enough…
“Y/n, keep your eyes on me.” You looked at her once more. Maggie. When did you look away again? “Help is coming.” Her words were hard, but they were a bit clouded to you. “Hey, hey, Y/n?” Her words were clear again. “Listen to me. Alex is coming, alright?” You opened your mouth when you heard Lexie’s name, to say something, but you can’t form words. You don’t know what to say.
You swayed, uncontrollably, so you immediately put your left hand on the ground for support.
“Oh god, Y/n. Stay with me. Hey—Hey, Alex is here! There she is! Keep your eyes open—Y/n.” You finally detected panic in Maggie’s words. You’re still in denial that she was talking to you even if you heard your name. Everything felt cold. You felt faint. You’re wondering why you haven’t felt this before. All you wanted to know was what caused this. When did you start bleeding?
Your arm holding you up was shaking, and you chose to concentrate on keeping your consciousness and not listen to Maggie’s annoying voice. You know you’re holding yourself up, but the feeling in your supporting arm went away. You felt light, yet hot and cold at the same time. What was happening? You kept your eyes closed because that’s the only way you can focus. You’re focusing… you’re focusing. You’re awake. You’re awake. You’re bleeding and you’re awake. You have to stay awake. That’s what they say in the movies, right? Head injuries are serious. Bleeding is serious. You have to stay awake. Y/n, stay awake.
You felt someone shake you, and you gasped and opened your eyes. You felt the back of your head resting on a pillow, and the bed was moving. Another earthquake? Why were you moving? Wait, why were you in a bed?
Lexie came into your line of vision. The room was dark, robbed off the sunlight you remember before closing your eyes. You close your eyes.
“Y/n, keep your goddamn eyes open.” You opened your eyes and saw Lexie staring down at you and there were tears in her eyes. Why in goddamn’s world is she crying? Wait, oh god you were bleeding.
“Lexie—“ Why was it so hard to speak? “Lexie, I’m bleeding,” you choked out. Why is it hard to speak? Is this it? God, you’re tired. You wanted to close your eyes.
“She’s in shock—“ You heard someone say. Then, you felt a warm hand against your cool right cheek.
“Y/n, stay with me, alright?” The hand was slightly shaking, and so was Lexie’s voice.
“Lex—“ Your tongue kept twisting. “—I’m bleeding,” you muttered, and your eyes were slowly closing. It was slow for you—you actually thought you became cross-eyed for a minute. It was like a lagging laptop shutting down. Or a robot shutting down. Like in the movies.
“I know, Y/n, you are. God, you are. Stay awake for me please?” Was Lexie crying?
Okay, I will. —You’re sure you told her.

How it should have ended (mon*** ruins everything)
Imma just imagine in my head the scene where Alex gets home from the encounter with the white martian. This will probably be so bad and awkward. I'm sorry! Let me know if you like it: "Fuck fuck fuck", Alex thinks to herself, "She's going to be so mad at me". She's now running back to Maggie's in full sprint in the rain, losing her breath she stops abruptly and climbs up the apartment building. She reaches the door and vigorously pounds on the door. "Geez Alex I may be indestructible but my door isn't-" Maggie states matter of factly. Alex steps into the apartment still heaving with exhaustion. Maggie gets a better look at Alex and realizes that she's dripping head to toe. Her eyes widen,"Woah are you okay Danvers? You said there was a white martian at the DEO over the phone. I didn't think you would get here this fast. And you're soaked!". She takes Alex's hand and leads her to the couch and wraps a blanket around her tightly. "Tell me everything. I meant it what I said before. The days of you pushing down your feelings are officially over. I'm your girlfriend now and you have to realize I'm here for every moment of it, good or bad." Alex finally catches her breath, "I'm so sorry Maggie", her voice starts to crack. "Sorry?" "I missed our date. You went out of your way to get these tickets for us and you were excited and work got in the way again! I can't help but feel that my work at the DEO and my sister keep pushing time I have with you away. It's not fair to you and I just want to be a good girlfriend but I feel that I don't deserve you", Alex gets out while silent tears slide down her cheeks. Maggie moves her thumb over Alex's cheeks and starts stroking them. "You're sorry for protecting your sister? You're sorry for protecting the DEO? Alex you are always going to be hunting down aliens and you have no control over it-" "I didn't save anyone! The white martian shapeshifted into me and knocked me out. I did NOTHING!" "You were caught in the wrong situation at the wrong time. You and I both know that you were only checking on Kara and that you planned on coming right back. But that's besides the point Alex, you could've been killed tonight and I wouldn't have known! You are here right now and I feel so incredibly thankful that you are still mine. We both risk our lives everyday. Life is too short for us to keep apologizing. It's ok. I'm ok. You're ok. And we will be ok." Alex and Maggie stay silent for a moment as they relish each others warmth as they lay in each other's arms. Cautiously Alex starts, "I love you so much. I always want to be with you. And it scares me to death every time you go to work too. You might not be slaying some evil aliens like I am, but National City is dangerous and I know you are so strong and brave, but I still worry" Maggie mouth curls in a smile and Alex's favorite feature of Maggie's appears, the dimples. "You just said 'I love you'", Maggie laughs to herself. "I know and I meant it. Like you said, no more pushing down emotions. I want you to know exactly how I feel", Alex says while looking at Maggie's perfect lips. Maggie's eyes wander to Alex's lips the same, "I love you too." The two crash into a kiss instantaneously after the words leave Maggie's mouth. They continue like that until Maggie notices Alex start to shiver. "Come on let's get to bed Danvers" "I can stay over?", Alex asks surprised. "Are you kidding? You almost died. I'm not letting you leave my sight!", Maggie exclaims. Alex and Maggie collapse in bed together and Maggie wraps herself around Alex to return warmth to her. The two stay like this for the rest of the night. The End (As it should have been. None of this Mon*** crap stealing precious sanvers screen time!!!!)

How 2x11 Supergirl should have ended (mon*** ruins everything)
How it should have ended (mon*** ruins everything) Imma just imagine in my head the scene where Alex gets home from the encounter with the white martian. This will probably be so bad and awkward. I’m sorry! Let me know if you like it: “Fuck fuck fuck”, Alex thinks to herself, “She’s going to be so mad at me”.
She’s now running back to Maggie’s in full sprint in the rain, losing her breath she stops abruptly and climbs up the apartment building. She reaches the door and vigorously pounds on the door.
“Geez Alex I may be indestructible but my door isn’t-” Maggie states matter of factly. Alex steps into the apartment still heaving with exhaustion. Maggie gets a better look at Alex and realizes that she’s dripping head to toe. Her eyes widen,“Woah are you okay Danvers? You said there was a white martian at the DEO over the phone. I didn’t think you would get here this fast. And you’re soaked!”. She takes Alex’s hand and leads her to the couch and wraps a blanket around her tightly.
“Tell me everything. I meant it what I said before. The days of you pushing down your feelings are officially over. I’m your girlfriend now and you have to realize I’m here for every moment of it, good or bad.”
Alex finally catches her breath, “I’m so sorry Maggie”, her voice starts to crack.
“Sorry?”
“I missed our date. You went out of your way to get these tickets for us and you were excited and work got in the way again! I can’t help but feel that my work at the DEO and my sister keep pushing time I have with you away. It’s not fair to you and I just want to be a good girlfriend but I feel that I don’t deserve you”, Alex gets out while silent tears slide down her cheeks.
Maggie moves her thumb over Alex’s cheeks and starts stroking them.
“You’re sorry for protecting your sister? You’re sorry for protecting the DEO? Alex you are always going to be hunting down aliens and you have no control over it-”
“I didn’t save anyone! The white martian shapeshifted into me and knocked me out. I did NOTHING!”

Hey it's me and I'm back with another academia AU (part of a 2-part series - if you also want the Supercat half, that's part 2, up tonight or tomorrow morning)!
A/N: This isn’t me making light of a global pandemic; it’s an attempt to salvage something creative out of the clusterfuck that is my university’s last-minute shift to distance learning and all the anxiety provoked by the news cycle.
Fic Excerpt:
“Anything new?” came a sleepy voice from the other side of the bed.
Alex’s eyes flickered over to the tangled mess of dark hair just barely visible from beneath the sheets. “More cases. More deaths. More panic.”
“So the usual,” Maggie sighed, finally blinking her eyes open to watch the news on the hotel’s small television set.
“Yeah. But it doesn’t look like we’ll have trouble flying back to California yet.”
“You know we’ll have to self-quarantine for two full weeks, right?” Alex narrowed her eyes. “Okay, fine, yes, the double-doctor knows this,” Maggie huffed. “It’s gonna suck, though.”
Picking at a thread on the comforter, Alex cleared her throat. “If you wanted, I mean, I don’t know…we could be quarantine buddies?”
“You and me? Two weeks together?”
Alex’s cheeks flushed a deep shade of red. “I didn’t—it doesn’t have to be some big commitment or whatever. I just meant that if you were worried about getting lonely, we’re both gonna—”
“Danvers, I didn’t say it was a bad thing.”
“Oh.”
“Besides, if anyone…I mean, I don’t exactly have a great track record with people wanting to stick around.” She forced out a self-deprecating laugh.
“Well I guess I’m just a lot smarter than any of those women. I mean, I am a double-doctor…”
That finally pulled a real laugh from Maggie. “What do you say we turn off the news and help distract each other?”
Pulling off her t-shirt and rolling on top of Maggie, Alex grinned. “I’d say I’m already one step ahead of you.”

3 in the bed
“Pst…Alex. Al-ex. AL-ex. Alexandra Danvers” Kara whispered, using variations of her sister’s name to try and wake the sleeping agent. When she found herself unable to wake her sister, she moved over to the right side of the bed.
A sleeping Maggie Sawyer awaited.
“Hey Maggie” Kara again said in hushed tones, adding a slight poke to the nose with the words she hoped would registered in her soon to be sister in laws brain. “Ma-ggie, I’m going to throw your tiny trees out of the window” Kara giggled to herself.
The sleeping woman shifted in her sleep, feeling the cool puffs of breath from the younger Danvers tickle her nose. Unfortunately for her, it was enough to wake her from the peaceful sleep she had been looking forward to throughout the day.
Waking up, Maggie opened her eyes to find the beaming face of Kara Danvers smiling back at her.
Now to anyone else, to find your fiancés sister at the side of your bed during the night would be somewhat concerning. For the newly engaged couple however, they had grown accustomed to Kara and her late night, and sometimes unwanted, appearances in the couple’s bedroom.
She didn’t always have the best timing, even Kara could admit to that. Storming into the room of newly engaged and happy couple was sure to have some scaring moments for all involved. Leading to the less than amusing shouts of “Jesus, we don’t even have children and yet somehow we have child!”
Despite this, the scenario would always play out again and again. The reason was simple enough, it was Kara.
Shuffling to make room for the Kryptonian, Maggie scooted closer to Alex. Taking the hint, Kara joined Maggie still smiling uncontrollably.
“All right Little Danvers, hit me” Maggie mumbled, ready for the latest of Kara’s night time stories.
Kara coughed a couple times to prepare herself, theatrical in her story telling moments.
“So tonight! I picked her up from her office, nothing unusual there. But I always have problems when I try to think of cool things we could do on our dates. I really like her you know? So I decided I’d take her to this really nice place I found when I first moved to the city” Maggie hummed in acknowledgement of what Kara was telling her.
The youngest woman continued.
“So, I bought a picnic and drove us up to the cliff face. It was perfect Maggie! The sunsets on earth has always amazed me, but with her I didn’t even notice it setting. I just, I like her so much. I really don’t want to blow it” Self-doubt often creeped itself into Kara’s mind. It showed up a couple of hours after the alien girl found herself in close quarters with the better Luthor.
That’s when Maggie finally woke up, when she realized what Kara needed was a big sister, a friend, someone to show her that she’s just as special as the girl who basically holds up the sun for her even though she is the sun to so many.
“Kara, you won’t blow it with Lena. Luthor is smart enough to know what she has with you is more than any one is lucky enough to get in this life time, well anyone apart from your sister” Maggie smirked, eyes now adjusting to the funny sight of being stuck between the Danvers sisters. “What I am trying to say is that there were many times at the start of our relationship where I thought I might blow it, I always thought Alex deserved a lot better than a cop with a tiny apartment and abandonment issues”
Kara huffed.
“Alex would have been stupid to pick anyone other than you” she said, poking the smaller woman in the ribs.
“Yeah, and Lena would be stupid to move onto another person after you. Alien or otherwise” Maggie poked back, “Now come on Little Danvers, get some sleep. Your sisters going to deal with the fact she has to share the quilt tonight”
The pair wriggled until the found the comfiest position, Maggie facing the back of her fiancé while Kara settled on her back just behind her.
Unbeknownst to them, the one who brought them together was trying her best to contain her smile. Her heart warming at the sound of Kara and Maggie bonding without the push from her. Happy to know that despite their own differences, her sister and fiancé would continue to look out for each other.
So, this is what complete feels like. Alex thought.
