Ballet
1.29.17. Something really great happened at the ballet last night. For one thing, there's nothing more gorgeous than a trained ballet dancer taking a Gene Kelly turn. Robby Fairchild proved that during his run last year as the Broadway lead in An American in Paris. In Justin Peck's The Times are Racing for The New York City Ballet, Peck and Fairchild are the new incarnation of Kelly and Donald O'Connor (Singing in the Rain, 1952). Each shoulder shrug and hip sway is crisply defined. Each stop is on the proverbial dime. Not just the two men, but the entire cast of 20 ballet dancers, all wearing tennis shoes. There's an echo of West Side Story in the movement and costuming, but without the melodrama. This is thrilling, non-narrative dancing. Plenty of it. A duet between Tiler Peck and Amar Ramasar is tattooed on my heart: the two repeatedly took turns at an awkward leg flailing flip that ends up seated on the ground. Check out the video. And there's the moment when the entire cast falls flat to the floor. Falling is a Peck signature. Another remarkable thing: the audience at the Koch Theater was young and colorful, the traditional blue hair ballet crowd, nowhere in evidence. Artists and investment bankers (and Claire Danes and Maggie Gyllenhaal) rubbed shoulders to fill the place with their air kisses. The third floor lobby bar had the feeling of a hip club with a tent of floor-to-ceiling height panels of computer animated paintings by Santtu Mustonen in the center. "A giant screen saver," I heard someone remark. At the exit, everyone received a gift: a plastic wrapped pashmina designed by the artist. My neighbor wore hers as a headscarf in solidarity with Muslim women. Quite an unusual night. It wasn't until afterward on the train that I learned about the protestors at the airport and the Brooklyn judge who saved the day.

#NattyNights: New York City Ballet Art Series 2017
For the past five years New York City Ballet has partnered with contemporary artists for their NYCB Art Series. This year’s collaborator is Santtu Mustonen, originally from Finland and now living in Brooklyn.
The introduction of the collaboration was in conjunction with a ballet performance by NYCB at the David H. Koch Theatre. The night was broken into five separate performances all to the compositions of Igor Stravinsky, but vastly different in choreography, costumes, and set design.
My favorite of the night was The Cage, choreographed by Jerome Robbins. Sterling Hyltin gave a beautifully standout performance as The Novice, where she demonstrated absolute control of every inch of her body to evoke the intense range of emotions the role called for. Another memorable performance of the night was Lauren Lovette and Ask la Cour dancing Aria II in Stravinsky Violin Concerto.
Audience members were encouraged to spend the two intermissions viewing and interacting with Mustonen’s installation in the David H. Koch Theatre Promanade. It is titled Cross-Pollination, a mixed media consisting of towering video projections and c-prints on aluminum.
“Inspired by the choreography, movement, and abstract storytelling of New York City Ballet works, Mustonen creates a series of immersive digital paintings and general fine art prints that aim to transport the viewer to another world, inviting us to get lost inside the visuals and find our own way of seeing ourselves through a richly creative ecosystem”

Attendees were given custom scarves designed and signed by Mustonen as they left the hall.
