My topic is all about public transportation in the Philippines. Here are some of the various types of trips that our countrymen take on a regular basis.
Jeepneys
Most popular public transportation in the Philippines are jeepneys.
Jeepneys are started when the Americans came in the Philippines. Jeepneys became a symbol in Philippine culture.
Buses
There are also public buses to ride, there is a city operation and a provincial operation. Examples of bus company city operations: Santrans, Del Monte City Trans, Jayross Lucky Seven Tours. Examples of provincial bus operations: Philippine Rabbit, Victory Liner, Five Star.
Trains
The letters LRT and MRT stand for "light rail transit" and "metro rail transit" or "mass rapid transit," respectively. The only distinctions between the two modes of transportation in the Philippines are the roads and the companies that operate them. The LRT is both shorter and slower than the MRT.
LRT Line 1 or LRT-1 is a light rapid transit system line in Metro Manila, Philippines, operated by Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) and owned by the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) as part of the Manila Light Rail Transit System.
Along with the Manila Light Rail Transit System, the Manila Metro Rail Transit System, also known as the Manila Metro, is one of two rapid transit systems serving Metro Manila in the Philippines. It started as a single line in 1999, and by the year 2000, it was completely operational.
The Philippine National Railways is a state-owned railway company in the Philippines that runs a commuter rail service between Metro Manila and Laguna, as well as local services in the Bicol Region between Sipocot, Naga City, and Legazpi City. It is a Department of Transportation-affiliated organization.
Tricycles
There’s also a legend that we ride to the market, to school, and everywhere else. The tricycle. A motorcycle or, in some cases, a bicycle with a sidecar. If it's a bicycle, it's referred to as a pedicab! They're decorated to look like jeepneys, with gadgets strewn around.
Roro
The Philippine Nautical Highway System, also known as the Road Roll-on/Roll-off Terminal System (RRTS) or simply the RoRo System, is a network of highways and vehicular ferry routes that serves as the backbone of the Philippines' nationwide vehicle transportation system.
There is also air transportation. There are Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Cathay Pacific, and others.
Philippine Airlines, a subsidiary of PAL Holdings, Inc., and formerly known as Philippine Air Lines, is the country's flag carrier. The airline was founded in 1941 and is the first and oldest commercial airline in Asia operating under its original name. It is headquartered at the PNB Financial Center in Pasay.
Cebu Pacific Air, Inc., doing business as Cebu Pacific and stylized as cebu pacific, is a Philippine low-cost carrier based at Mactan–Cebu International Airport in Lapu-Lapu City, Metro Cebu. It is Asia's oldest low-cost airline, having been established in 1988.

And Again, So everything happened so well yesterday kaya so happy, finally naging matagumpay ang aking interview. So today, sa isang Hospital naman dito samin, the background of the story was last year pa ako nagpasa ng resume dito at tandang tanda ko pa tinawanan ako ng guard kase mukha nga akong bata kami nung kasama ko syempre fresh grad, newly board passer.
Buti nalang tinawag na ako at last! Wohoo.kabado ako pero sakto nalang.Lalake nag interview sakin. Pagkapakilalang -pakilala nya at pag tanong nya sakin sanabihan ko na agad sya “Ahm Can I speak Tagalog?” Wala na syang magagawa natanong ko nasya haleeer hahaha sya din mag adjust not me. Personal questions yung mga tanong as usual nakakatawa nga kase tinanong nya ako “ So di mo pa nararanasang gumimik?” Halaaa” Naisip nalang namin “Luh?

Checked List
By: France Alviz
Tumblr media
Hanap ka nga ng malapit na resort, nak”, these was his request one summer afternoon last April 2015. “Kaya mo pa ba mag byahe ng malayo? Baka di kayanin ng katawan mo”, they doubted. “Oo naman. Eh, di natin alam baka last ko na pala ‘to”, he added.
In search for a resort near Manila that’s inexpensive and has fresh water pools to grant my uncle’s request, and to rid of the summer heat, a family friend suggested a resort called SM or Sirok Mangga Resort located at Pila, Batchelor, Natividad, Pangasinan.
Sirok which means “ilalim” and Mangga which is the Filipino term for “mangoes” literally means sa “ilalim ng [punong] mangga”. The name was coined by the owners because of the century-old Mango trees surrounding the area. The resort started as a private place for the family but was latter opened to friends and to the public for about 6 years now.
What’s Up?
Tumblr media
Sirok Mangga offers 1 adult and 2 kiddie pools with ever-flowing spring water fresh from the mountains. The water is actually potable and is best for people who have skin conditions because the water is flowing and is continually replaced plus, there’s no chlorine! Entrance fee during daytime only costs P30 and becomes P65 by nighttime, but if you’ll rent a room and stay overnight, the use of the pools are already free of charge.
There are 5 non-air conditioned rooms which rates P750 per night but they are usually smaller compared to the 4 air conditioned rooms with toilet and shower that costs only P1, 500 per night that’s good for 3-4 persons. If you have more members who’d wish to stay in the same room, extra mattresses can be requested at an additional of 100 pesos per mattress.
The resort offers karaokes as well as tables for rent for only P75 or cottages with price ranging from P150-350. SM Resort also has a mini pavilion of 50 pax for P1, 500 for bigger groups, and a function hall than can accommodate up to 150 persons for P4, 500. For those who like adventure, SM Resort also has an area for wall climbing that’s free of charge and a zip line for a minimal amount of 30 pesos. The guests also has the freedom to bring their own food and cook at designated cooking areas.
Guess what?
We arrived at the resort at about 1:30 pm on the 25th of April. We rented a villa with two air conditioned rooms with built-in toilet and shower that accommodated all eleven of us. We swam into the fresh-water pools during the afternoon, ate the baon that we bought from home and slept with comfort while hearing the ever flowing spring water.
Tumblr media
The following morning (April 26th), we prepared our breakfast and tried to cook for the first time in an open fire that blackened all our pots and pans! After having breakfast, we never really expected the biggest bonus of this trip. We were asked by the owner if we would like to go to the Maranom Falls located up in the mountains and to the Sky Plaza where the a statue of Christ the Redeemer (just like the one in Brazil) is located over viewing the whole spread of Pangasinan.
Adventure time!
Tumblr media
As per their suggestion, we decided to see the falls first while it is still early and before the sun gets too hot. So around 7am, via a Kuliglig ride, we left our villa and they took us to the foot of the mountain. And from there, we trekked for about 30 minutes with a local guide to lead us.
The terrain started with a cemented road but after a few meters the path was already rocky and most of the times narrow. We even tried crossing through a few pieces of thin logs! It’s actually challenging since we don’t have much experience hiking and trekking but it was really a fun and enjoyable experience for the family. Note: the hike could be physically strenuous especially for ill and aged family members. Best if they just stay at the resort also to avoid further danger.
Tumblr media
After hiking a challenging terrain, we finally reached the Maranom Falls. The crystal clear water from the falls soothed all our eyes and instantly re-energized us after walking through narrow paths and climbing humungous rocks. The water isn’t too deep that’s safe for kids to swim, but of course with close supervision from parents or guardians. And the best part, the place is free of charge! After about an hour or two, we decided to head back to the resort because the sun was already scorching and we didn’t want to get toasted!
The rates for the guide usually varies, depending if there are children that has to be assisted and carried through the trek. It’s up to the guests how much they would like to tip the local guides and, the kuliglig ride costs only P150 back and forth.
Woah! This is totally cool!
Tumblr media
A Kuliglig that’ll take us back to the resort was waiting for us as we went back to the bottom of the mountains. As soon as we arrived, the ever accommodating and hospitable owners, Mr. Oscar and Mrs. Senie Oriel, offered us that they can cook for our lunch and we agreed to the offer. So, we ordered two servings of their pinakbet, inihaw na bangus, tinapang galunggong, and their tiny fresh water fish that is directly caught from the spring run-off cooked the Panggalatok way. But this isn’t an ordinary lunchtime because they’ve set up a table by the shade at the mini river (which is actually an irrigation) with flowing spring water from the mountain! And it’s another first for the entire family that we will totally treasure.
Feel like going?
If via private vehicle, you can try this fun-filled experience by going Northbound. Take NLEX then SCTEX. From TPLEX Rosales exit, turn right then go straight to Tayug. And from there, turn right before reaching magic mall and go straight until you reach Natividad town proper. Then from the town proper, turn left and then go straight until you reach SM resort. We travelled for about 3 to 4.5 hours (depending on the traffic) with stopovers coming from Valenzuela City to Natividad, Pangasinan.
But if you’ll take the public transport, ride a bus in Cubao bound to Tayug, Pangasinan. You may check Viron, 5 Star and Santrans for trip schedules. Upon reaching Tayug, go to Tayug market and look for Batchelor, Natividad tricycle station and tell the driver to drop you at SM resort. But in case you miss the Tayug-bound bus, you can also ride a bus that is north-bound and ask if they will pass SM City Rosales. From SM City Rosales, there's van or jeep bound to Tayug and from there you can ride a tricycle bound to Batchelor, Natividad.
Our trip costed roughly around P10, 000 for all 11 adults and 1 child. This includes toll fees and gas, food, fees and accommodation which we think isn’t bad for an overnight trip that’s near the metro and not only provides what’s on our checklist but even exceeded our expectations!
The best days
Tumblr media
For a short period of time, we forgot about school, work, bills, and illnesses, and just enjoyed the presence of each family member. We ate together, laughed, trekked, swam and tried new things. Though this is just one of the many adventures our family had experienced, this trip is actually bitter-sweet for we never knew that his lines, “di natin alam, baka last ko na ‘to” would actually come true. This was my uncle Ruel’s last out of town vacation before he went to the Lord in June 2015.
All memories made and spent at Sirok Mangga Resort will be treasured dearly by every one of us. Thanks to the warm and welcome treatment of the owners, we were able to grant my uncle’s wish far greater than what we could ever imagine.
